Bull Sale • February 7, 2014 • 1:00 p.m.

I

am truly excited to welcome everyone to our 15th annual Genetic Edge Simmental Bull Sale, Friday February 7th at the ranch. One of the most frequent asked questions all fall has been, “How do the bull calves look?” I know some of you heard the same answer last year, and the year before that, “Best set ever!” True statement, and so they should be. After a 30 year breeding program, always targeting to be better, and take them to the next level, they should be the strongest set ever. Let’s face it if you’re not moving forward, your standing still, or going backwards. Change is inevitable, and this years’ cover signifies that. “Stride & Razzmatazz” have been an amazing one, two combo in our breeding program for the past several years. Having said that we bid these two farewell, as “Razzmatazz” now graces the pastures at Pine Creek Simmentals, and “Stride” will forever overlook the pastures from a special hill top here at the ranch. This will be the last opportunity to purchase direct sons from these two for many years. A new crew steps up to the challenge, as 5 new sire groups will be represented, along with Mojito, Barbossa, and Wolfman, and several AI and ET calves. Yet again this fall it was so evident that those good feeding, heavy weight calves were the ones the feedlots really wanted. With less cow numbers, and growing red meat demand, it’s really obvious to me that quality pounds pay. I know not only ourselves, but several producers seen the largest calf cheques they have ever received, with cull cows and bulls following suit. I realize many more people have turned to more cropping. Let me ask you a simple question. Do you fertilize or spray those crops? Well the same holds true when buying bulls. Your next bull purchase is the cheapest fertilizer you will buy for your calf crop. It’s so obvious to me that spending an extra few hundred or thousand on the right bull is the right choice. He is the largest single contributing factor to your calf crop! We are also extremely excited this year to be teamed up with Boehringer, to offer you triple assured health protection. We appreciate your herd bulls are a major purchase, and we want to do all we can to assure you are getting the most bang for your dollars invested. The majority of the bulls are eligible for this program, and will be acknowledged with the Express Verified Plus logo on their photos. More details on this exciting program are in the Boehringer ad. Bottom line is customer satisfaction is a number one priority for us. We will do everything possible to ensure your purchase from Anchor D Ranch is your best option, and if you have a problem, we want to be the first and last to know about it, so it’s dealt with. Our weaning weights tend to be a bit lighter this year, thanks to such a wet year, even though these calves were “soft” at weaning, the frame and power was there, and they took no time to bulk up on dry feed. We developed them like every other year on a TMR cereal silage ration, and they have responded how we felt they would. They are bred and fed to go out and last for many years. We want your purchase to deliver the maximum genetic value to your herd possible. These are early maturing cattle that will maximize potential for their new owners. We thank our loyal customers and welcome any new or potential customers and invite you to join us for a steak sale day. We are very grateful for your support, and promise to supply you, our customer, with the best service and product we can. For anyone unable to attend or wishing to view the bulls, prior to the sale you are certainly welcome to stop in any time, or call us to discuss your needs. We look forward to seeing you at the sale.

This is “Razzmatazz’s” final calf crop for us, and what a job he did. He truly left a mark on our herd, as we have several daughters, and his sons have always been very popular with the commercial cattlemen, and he will likely boast a record that may not be beaten. In 7 calf crops, including his first year, he has had the largest sire group in the sale every year. That truly says something about this great bull, and he truly deserves to have the lead off group in the catalogue. Look for his sons to add length, growth, pigmentation, hair, and great disposition.

Every year we set aside a small group of bulls as spares. “Admiral” had an injury pre weaning, and then tended to be the whipping boy in the pen, so his numbers don’t really tell the story. I felt he was a bull we would not only keep as a spare, but be THE spare. I felt if we had a need for him ourselves he was the guy, that’s how much I believe in him. His dam “Saphire” is our new poster girl, and I stated about her as a bred heifer she would take “Dorothy’s” place as our new cornerstone female. She has only has 2 other sons, of which both have went into purebred herds for a modest $16,000 average. We left her open this past year, and have done a lot of embryo work on her. These two year old bulls just run on grass and came in the yard first of December. “Admiral” has exploded, just as I thought he would. This is a serious bull that deserves a serious look.

“Moccasin” is from one of the never miss cows, who I mentioned in last years’ catalogue could quite possibly be our best “Native Son” daughter. 8 calves, including 6 bulls, that have all solidly made the sale pen, and two daughters which were both in our herd. Out of those 8 calves, 7 of them have been sired by “Razzmatazz” I guess that is as strong of endorsement on how well this cross works. Retain all his daughters, and reap the big rewards on those awesome steer calves he will sire. Brothers working for Walt Hedges, Gary Beulow, Dwayne Patterson, Big Valley Simmentals, and Rick & Evelyn Sanderson. Absolutely no guess work here.

“Kerosene” is unquestionably one of my favorites this year. He is a bull that just gets better and better every day, and is from a wicked good cow family. In fact if you liked Mackenzie’s “Kate” cow, who was this years National YCSA Champion Female, well “Kerosene” would be her full brother by blood. This is just going to be a rock star bull, and is from a cross we have duplicated 5 times. When it works stick with it, and this cross works.

Although “Razz” is just registered as a half blood he is as pure as it gets, coming from an excellent commercial “Legend X Bernheim /Universe” recip cow. We purchased 40 plus cows from mom and dad’s herd when they dispersed to use as recips. Further to that though they were all from known cow families, that were raised here for multiple generations, just so that if they didn’t retain an embryo we would have a replacement heifer to stick back in the herd, an awesome steer, or on occasion when the right one came along a bull anyone would be proud to own. This is “Razz” and any commercial cattlemen should be proud to own him.

You may tend to notice a theme with these “Razzmatazz” sons. Most of them are from cows that have been mated to him several times. I do like to change things up, but when those calves come out so consistent, it’s tough to not stick with it. I also always try to get a handful of these buckskin bulls in the sale, and most every year “Sonita” sticks one of these mellow yellow powerhouses in the mix. This is a bull you’ll use to add growth, and the maternal strengths are also awesome. His dam likely has the best udder of any cow on the farm, at age 11! When his calves hit the scale in the fall you’ll thick it’s an “Earthquake.”

“Blu-Ray” is from a cow family that has done so much for us. His dam was a sister to “Rawlins” a heifer bull we used for many years. Last years’ full brother was virtually a carbon copy of “Blu-Ray” , he was also one of our fall display calves, and sold to Erskine Colony. This is the last calf from “Selina” as she came in open this fall, but certainly will leave a lasting impression with “Blu-Ray”. She was a deep bodied cow with tremendous length, awesome feet, and loads of milk. He is a bull that is worthy of working as a breeder bull.

We don’t have a whole bunch of his daughters, but the ones we do have are plumb good. This is a bull that is going to add power and growth, tons of hair lots of pigmentation, and produce those good growth feedlot steers. He is also a very versatile bull that should be able to be used on a wide variety of types of cows. Just an extremely solid choice for a great rancher bull.

He will add all the great qualities of the “Razzmatazz” cattle, offering hair, growth, length, disposition, and pound$$. I’m pretty certain “Turbo” will be one of those bulls you like today, really like tomorrow, love next fall, and later on when his daughters are producing you’ll wonder why you don’t have more. In a nut shell “Turbo” is power.

“Chipotal” has been a favorite of mine all fall. I really appreciate his muscle pattern, shape, and body mass. He is from a young “Harrach” cow that is extremely easy fleshing, and he is also a full brother to my favorite replacement heifers from last fall, not one of my favorites, MY FAVORITE. Yep, hot stuff here with “Chipotal”, he is destined for greatness, and has a different twist on pedigree. Good stuff here.

“Jedi” is from Mackenzie’s 2 year old show cow “Kate”. She was named Supreme Champion Female with “Jedi” at side at the YCSA National show, and “Jedi” was named Reserve Champion bull. His sire “Regis” was our go to guy for many, many years in the heifer pen. He calved extremely well, but as you can see here he was so much more than just a heifer bull, as these cattle have style and performance on their side as well. “Kate” was Mackenzie’s pick from our entire heifer crop in 2011, and I think she will only continue to show her true value in the future, as she is a female that most likely should enter the donor pen at some point. Someone looking for a bull to use on heifers with a bunch more jam, and marketability, then “Jedi” should be your choice. Heifer approved.

“Scorpion” has been a stand out from day 1. He has a massive hip, and a lot of the same characteristics as his sire “Stride”. Her dam, “Dulcie” is a cow we bought in the dispersal, and put into our donor program. Every sale has a sleeper, and sometimes it’s nice to be looking for them when you get there. This will be one of them, and will be a strong choice for a wide selection of cows.

Some of you may remember the fancy “Metro” bull purchased by South Peace Colony at last years’ sale. “Gibbons” is his younger brother, but made up very similarly. Lots of eye appeal, length, and that same moderate birthweight. He is a stylish individual that will mature nicely and be a super stout massive bull. A stellar pedigree, he has an awful lot going for him. Be sure to have “Gibbons” on your radar, as I really think he is going to develop into one of the good ones.

There are always a handful of calves you start thinking about footnotes on the day you wean. “Premonition” is one of them. This guy excites me on paper, and in person. You stop and analyze him, and you’ll love him. A big deep power bull from “Dorothy’s” full sister. There is power in pedigree alone. “Premonition” says he will be great, and he is going to be an absolute meat wagon. I’m the first to tell you he’s not for everyone’s’ program, but for those of you wanting to add explosive power and pounds fast, here’s your bull. A very hard to fault female, and when you look at “Indigo” he is virtually flawless. The “Stride x Razzmatazz” is a cross that is really complimentary to one another, and here is the proof of that. We have a full sister to him, and she is a knock out, and Ferrybank Colony has a full brother who is just absolutely impressive. Tom was asking about how many more of these “Stride x Razzmatazz” crosses we had, they just plain work. For dollars invested I’m going to step out on a limb and say this will be the best dollars you’ll spend this spring. I know some folks may stroke him off based on color. After we lost “Montana” a few years ago, I’ve been just waiting for that right “Legend” son to come along again. “Windsurfer” is that very bull. He is a totally awesome bull to see in the flesh, and although he has a small sire group, I think this handful of bulls will represent him well. Look to his sons to add thickness, and growth. We always have a demand for these loose hided hairy, buckskin bulls. No matter what commercial market you go to you run a set of steer calves looking like “Sundawg” and they will ring the bell. The great part about wanting to keep a set of buckskin cows’ buckskin, when using a bull like this, is you absolutely don’t give up any maternal strengths to do so. In fact if anything you likely strengthen them. “Sundawg” is a bull that grows on me every day, and is really beginning to display his great carcass qualities. If you are looking for a buckskin bull, then you should have several check marks beside “Sundawg”.

Serrano” is actually a bit of an accident. He’s also proof that not all accidents are bad, in fact some are really good. We struggled for a bit getting “Windsurfer” breeding as a yearling, so started giving him a few heifers that repeated from the AI pen. “Serrano’s” dam is a beautiful Polled “Viper” daughter that you would be proud to display in any front pasture. This cross really worked, and with the genetics here I think he is a bull that you could use on both your cows and heifers, with the added bonus of being polled. We held him back as he was one of the younger bulls, as he didn’t have the size to stand in with the big boys. He will still be a bull I promote as a calving ease candidate. We have had a lot of bulls come and go here over the years, and in our heifer pen I would have to place “Barbossa” at the top. You heard me, ahead of “Regis, Rawlins & Montana”, three of the greats that did an incredible job here for us. “Barbossa” is as bomb proof in calving as any bull we have ever walked. We used him on 55 yearling heifers this past year. That’s confidence, and what a good breeder he is. The other thing that continues to impress us, is how these calves grow. The first year we made the mistake of culling some of his calves as we felt they were so small they would never amount to anything. Was that ever wrong, as they are true curve benders. In fact the heaviest weaning calf was an 85 pounder from a first calver. Buy his sons with extreme confidence. They calve, they grow, they look good, and several are polled.

Here is a bomb proof heifer bull. “Samoan” is a nicely put together package that fits the “Barbossa” profile. Small birth, polled, lots of pigmentation, and has growth to accompany that. It’s so important on those first calving heifers, for those calves to hit the ground running. I truly feel a low stress calving as a heifer will result in a better cow which lasts longer in the end. Not only does “Samoan” fit this job to a tee, but he has one of our best cows as his grandmother. He will be so much more than just a heifer bull. Heifer approved.

Not all bad for his debut. “Barcelona” could very well follow his sires hoof prints. I have always maintained when buying a herd bull buy one from a great cow. We have lived by this theory, and it has served us well. “Barcelona” is from a great cow family and earlier in the catalogue you may remember reading about an 11 year old cow with possibly the best udder on the farm, well that’s his grandmother. Last years’ high seller “Churro” is a full blood brother to “Moloka’i”. This is an absolute gem of a cow family Garren has, and no matter how you breed them they are wicked good. Going to grass “Moloka’i” was certainly one of the studs. About two months before weaning we thought we had lost him, and had written him off as being dead or bamboozled. Be darned if he didn’t show back up a couple weeks before weaning. We have no idea where he went, but where ever he was weaned, and did things on his own. In 30+ years in the business, I honestly don’t know if we have ever produced a bull I have had so much confidence or anticipation in. “Tortuga” is impressive in his own right, when you see him on paper he’s impressive, he’s the total package. “Tortuga” has been identified as special from the day he was born. His dam is a fabulous 1st calver, who just so happens to be “Viper’s” one and only full sibling. The combination of these two has been stellar. Most of you know I don’t breed cattle for EPD’s, they are a tool if you wish to use them. “Tortuga’s” EPD’s are impressive to say the least. All this stuff is great, but the most important tool you will use we haven’t even addressed yet, he’s got the look. This bull is a well-rounded, deep ribbed, long bodied, smooth shouldered masterpiece. He is blood red, and smooth polled. If you want to elevate to the next level then I think “Tortuga” will catapult you there. He is not vaccinated, so he should be worldwide exportable. We wish to retain 200 units of semen for in herd use only. If whoever buys this bull decides to keep him off the market, we too will honor that, and not use any semen the first year, to give the buyer exclusivity. We have been very fortunate to have created some great ones in the past, I honestly think “Tortuga” is going to write a new chapter in history, the world is his oyster. Heifer approved.

I mentioned earlier that this is possibly the strongest set of “Mojito” sons we have had, and “Mojave” is no exception. He is a big tough power bull, with a shot of maternal bloodlines. This is going to be one of those bulls that is best described as, damn good. I expect big things from “Mojave” and expect he will produce a tremendous set of heavy weight calves, and a set of replacement females that will be stunning. Also consider that he combines our top three cow families all in one package, and it’s easy to understand how he has turned out to be this good.

“Temptation” is a very uniquely marked bull, who I would say if pigmentation for you is a priority, then this will be a tempting offer for you. We only have two “Kaptain” cows in our herd, and they are both really good. Lots of depth of body, easy fleshing cows that always look good. I would say with this combination, you will get lots of muscle, great maternal strengths, and as previously mentioned, lots of pigmentation. “Temptation” will be a bull you find at the middle of the pack, and will be a very solid investment for some one.

I am so pumped to have been able to add this bull into our bull battery. He ran heavy to heifers, and a strong majority of them are at the front end of the pen, and he will likely have a couple of the superstars in next Augusts’ female sale. His bull calves are a younger group, but be sure to look them over as they are going to be simply awesome. “Maximus” has developed into an impressive beef bull that is virtually flawless, and will see the biggest workload out of the bull battery now. That’s as strong of endorsement as I can give him. He is a terrific breeder, and has a really good foot, massive body, and muscle shape, and very clean fronted, all in a power package.

For those of you who remember “Mr. Gibbs” from last year, we present to you his little brothers, “Phineas & Ferb”. They are the youngest in this years sale, and originally we felt we may hold them back as spares just due to age. Garren really wanted these two in, and even though they are younger I really encourage you to stop and analyze them as they are a very useful correct pair of bulls. As I said they are brothers to “Mr. Gibbs” who was last years heavy weight bull. These two have lots of power, and certainly for someone breeding in May or June, these two will have more than enough size and power to get the job done.

I admired this bull from the day we sold him, and are lucky enough to have him only a mile from home at my cousins. He has always looked like a million bucks, and I really appreciate the set of commercial calves he has produced for them, but more importantly the replacement females he has left are rock solid. We were able to lease him again the following year, and specifically sorted a group of cows for him, trying to create a set of replacement heifers. We truly got more than we bargained for, as I think you will agree these bull calves are pretty darn good. We will not have any calves from him next year, but is slated to be back into the mix again. This is a very unique pair of flush mates. Direct sons of the old “Moses” bull and from our #1 cow “Dorothy Jane”. We flushed her to “Moses” but just left them in the tank waiting for that rainy day. This is a strong pair that offers something very different, and very special to everyone. “Typhoon” has perhaps just a bit more frame that “Rayban”. They both have lots of muscle, and are very smooth fronted. I really feel that they can offer some outcrossed genetics that will do a lot of good down the road. I would like to retain 100 units of in herd use semen only, on “Rayban”. “Rayban” has also been left unvaccinated, so export options are certainly there. I can’t help but think this pair is going to be extremely heavy muscled when they mature, and are backed by one of the great cows of the breed.

“ZZ Top” is from a great first calver. She has a bull calf at side this year from “Maximus” that already has the look of being something special. The grandmother is the dam of “Richious & Knarley” who are in the “Mojito” section, a couple of front enders. “ZZ Top” is unquestionably a bull that should find his way into a breeders herd. He is the total package with parentage on both sides that will make him special. Just some free advice, if you need to dig a little deeper on one to own him, this very well could be the one to do it on.

We purchased “Anaconda’s” dam at a ripe old age to add into our donor pen. We only manage to get a couple flushes from her, but we do have some tremendous young females entering the mix from her. “Viper” has written his own page in Simmental history already, and I think the “Viper” progeny will only grow more popular with time. “Anaconda” is a bull that will certainly have added power, with the polled factor, and most defiantly be a bull to retain daughters from. “Ajax” is a completely new opportunity. We brought his sires semen up from Texas, and used him on just a handful of cows, so we don’t have a bunch of calves from him. The small amount we do have seem to have lots of performance and grow. “Regio” is a very impressive looking bull, with lots of length, and thickness, and I feel “Ajax” should develop very similar. An added bonus is his dam “Elexis”. This cow has produced some front enders for us all ready, and “Ajax” is one of them. A smooth polled package with a different pedigree.

“Kaboom” is another of the great “Stubby” calves. This bull has tons of capacity a big broad top and a phenomenal hair coat. I can envision a set of steer calves hitting the sale ring sired by him. They will be totally awesome, and be the type that demands a premium. These “Stubby” bulls have been a real treat to feed, as they are just so darn honest and easy doing. Trust me you can’t go wrong with a bull like this, and is the type you can use on both your cows and heifers. We wanted to elevate our black program, I think when you see these “Stubby” calves you’ll agree we accomplished our goal. Heifer approved.

“Bullet” is a family favorite. He was orphaned at a couple months age, and went through a variety of helpers, until we were able to get him an adopted mother. That is likely part of his good natured attitude, but these “Stubby” cattle do appear to be really laid back. His dam was my #1 pick of our purebred heifers, and I really had high hopes for her. She came from a really great cow family as well, and although this will be her one and only calf, I think you will understand when you see him why I had high expectations for her, as she didn’t disappoint here. Confidently use “Bullet” on cows or heifers. Heifer approved.

We had “Jasper” on display this fall at the heifer sale. We were very fortunate to acquire a group of cows from Parkhill Ranches, and when I seen “Jasper’s” dam she was one I just immediately knew we had to have. She is an idea female, and did a fabulous job on this calf. Combined with the fact that “Jasper” is sired by a son of “Stubby”, just gives him that much more credibility. He is a very complete bull that is not extreme in any manner, and is out of a great cow. Mark him high on this springs shopping list.

Last year we purchased several black cows to build this section of our program. About 1/2 of those cows were cows we had leased form Nathan Stone, so we were very familiar with them as we had raised the large majority of them. “Congo’s” dam was one of those very cows, and her grand dam “Painted Smile” was the pivotal cow in this accusation. She is a cow we really wanted to develop a family around, and “Wynne” like her grandmother appears to have many of those same attributes. The “Superior” cattle I have seen continue to impress me, and “Congo” is no exception. A real strong topped heavy muscled bull, he will make someone an outstanding herd bull.

“Spade” is an embryo calf we have in partnership with Cooper Snider. You may remember three full brothers Snider’s had to him in last years’ sale. These are big rugged performance bulls, from the great “Kisses” cow. She is a cow that has done so much for their program. If you’re hunting for a black power bull to give you those extra pounds in the fall, then “Spade” gets the nod. I have seen 4 full brothers to “Spade” and every one of them was good. Buy him with confidence as he comes from the heart of their program.
