The WakaWaka Foundation

Who are we? The WakaWaka Foundation is an internationally operating NGO based in the Netherlands. We devise strategies and programs to fight energy poverty all over the world. Our mission is to provide people living at the bottom of the pyramid with safe, sustainable and self-sufficient energy and light solutions as well as providing necessary life skills and support. Energy Poverty There are 1.3 billion people living off-grid. These people do not have access to the conventional energy grid and are dependent on toxic, dangerous and dirty kerosene lamps for lighting. Kerosene lamps result in 300 000 deaths per year and millions of mutilations from lamp-related burns. The effects on the lungs from an indoor kerosene lamp equals smoking two packs of cigarettes per day and the use of kerosene costs an average of 20% of a daily family income. The lack of access to light is detrimental to safety, school results, economic activity and community life. WakaWaka The WakaWaka solar solutions are a potent weapon in combating these problems. The WakaWaka Light is the world’s smartest and most efficient solar led light. The WakaWaka Power also offers a USB-charging point for mobile phones. Both have a unique design adapted to the needs and aspirations of families at the bottom of the pyramid.

Lighting up Haiti

The WakaWaka Foundation donated 12 000 WakaWaka Lights to Haitians who are still suffering from the effects of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Three years after the earthquake, 370 000 Haitians are still living in complete darkness at night, making it impossible to escape energy poverty. The WakaWaka Lights were funded by the WakaWaka Power crowdfunding campaign from partner social enterprise Off-Grid Solutions.

Solar for Syria

The crisis in Syria worsens every day. 2 million refugees have fled Syria in this major humanitarian disaster. We are distributing tens of thousands of WakaWaka Powers to Syrian refugees together with other NGOs. With these WakaWaka Powers, families do not need to live in fear of tent camp fires and are able to charge their phones safely. This enables them to communicate with their scattered family members during the turmoil of civil war.

WakaWaka Foundation Programs

Micro-Entrepreneurs Program The WakaWaka Foundation provides WakaWaka products as start-up capital for microentrepreneurs who sell these products to those at the bottom of the pyramid through micro-loan installments. Through this program we kickstart economic development, teach entrepreneurialism and alleviate energy poverty.

Sun Sharing Alliance Program The WakaWaka Foundation offers other NGOs and non-profits the possibility to obtain WakaWaka solar products at a reduced price if they aim to reach a WakaWaka Foundation Target Community: people living in extreme poverty, remote locations or temporary residence.

Crisis Aid Program The WakaWaka Foundation supports international organizations by providing solar products to people in crisis situations or humanitarian disaster zones. The WakaWaka Crisis Aid program is currently focused on providing safety to refugees and communication with loved ones in the Syrian civil war.

Climate Hero Education Program Educating children at the bottom of the pyramid about the benefits and importance of a sustainable lifestyle helps them save on the costs of living, increase health and improve the local environment. Teaming up with partners all over the world, we develop climate education programs which are fun and full of important tips.
