Sligo Medical Academy Update Library News Latest news from the Dean Dr. Ger McCarthy The major news from the academy is that building work has commenced on the €2.3 million academy, which will be located at level 7 and 8 of the hospital, on top of the library. This is a major investment by NUI Galway and Sligo is the first of a number of academies being developed in conjunction with Saolta Hospital Group in Sligo, Letterkenny, Castlebar and Ballinasloe. Building completion is due for Sept 2015 in time for the new semester. This purpose built undergraduate facility will have lecture and tutorial facilities, a clinical skills 'ward', study area, tutor offices, lockers and a social area for the 60 students, who come to Sligo each semester. There are now 11 part time tutors employed by NUI Galway to provide Clinical Education for our future doctors. Local Consultants, NCHD's, Paramedical, Nursing staff and GP's all contribute to the curriculum and teaching programme, with the development of new Special Study Modules making Sligo a great place for students to develop and learn. Many Consultants also supervise summer research projects, leading to national and international publications.

Sligo will be hosting Clinical OSCE exams on February 27th and April 24th for year 4, which is another exciting new development and first for Sligo Academy! We had a very successful two day meeting in Galway in August for 'Meitheal' with many of the Strand Leaders and Tutors attending, facilitating excellent shared learning with staff in Galway and the Academies. It is hoped this will become an annual event. The feedback from students has been consistently positive in relation to their Sligo experience, so Thank You to all the staff and patients of Sligo Regional Hospital, Sligo Mental Health services and Primary care. Thanks to Mette Jensen (& all from the R&E Foundation) and Helen Clark in the library, for their contribution to the Intern programme and research skills. Thanks to all the Tutors and Strand leads and a special thanks to Liz Cavanagh for her wonderful contribution to the student experience. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Dr. Ger McCarthy, Dean
