NEWSLETTER Research Conference at SRH In November 2013, Sligo Regional Hospital once again featured the Annual Research Conference. Two distinguished keynote speakers delivered excellent talks to a packed audience. The event showcased a large number of research projects undertaken in the region. Prof. Brian Lawlor, internationally recognised researcher into Alzheimer’s Disease, gave an excellent lecture on emerging evidence on the prevention of Alzheimers. Prof. Lawlor is Conolly Norman Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at TCD and Consultant Psychiatrist St James’s Hospital. The overarching aims of Prof. Lawlor’s research programmes are to develop clinical, neuropsychological and biological markers of Alzheimer's disease and to test promising new interventions in clinical populations. Amongst others, Prof. Lawlor leads the NILVAD research project, which is the largest investigator-led clinical trial in Alzheimer's disease ever conducted in Europe. This was Prof. Lawlor’s second visit to Sligo - the Foundation organised an open public meeting on Aging with Prof. Lawlor in 2008. Gaine is Consultant Respiratory Physician and leads the National Centre for Pulmonary Hypertension at Mater University Hospital in Dublin. Research on new drugs for pulmonary hypertension is advancing rapidly, and there have been several new drugs developed in the past five years. Prof Gaine’s specialist unit at Continued on page 2

Childhood Obesity - Public Meeting Prof. Donal O’Shea, leading obesity expert in Ireland, came to Sligo in October 2013 to talk to a large audience on the growing issue of Childhood Obesity. Prof. O’Shea outlined the key causes of the problem and reviewed research that is going on in the field of prevention of childhood obesity. Annette Lalor, Dietitian Manager at SRH gave practical tips for parents. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Dara Gallagher, paediatrician at SRH. Supported by Health Promotion HSE .
