NEWSLETTER Annual Research Conference Vitamin D, Molecular Epidemiology and decline in childhood vaccinations. These and other topics were presented and discussed at another successful annual research conference in November 2012. The Foundation’s research conference on the last Friday on November is now firmly embedded in the hospital’s activity programme. This year we were privileged to host two imminent keynote speakers: Dr. Malachi McKenna, Consultant Endocrinologist, St. Michael’s Hospital & St. Vincent’s University Hospital & Clinical Director Metabolism Lab and Dr. Sharon Glynn, Director Laboratory Research, Prostate Cancer Institute, NUIG.

Behind the cover of the BMJ Seminar with Senior Editor of the BMJ Prof. Domhnall MacAuley, Senior Editor of the BMJ gave an excellent talk at a seminar in October 2012 at Sligo Regional Hospital. Prof. MacAuley spoke about how the BMJ works, what the BMJ publishes and why. He also gave an insight into his own role dealing with research papers from first submission to the final decision. Prof. MacAuley encouraged novice researchers to enter the publishing arena and gave examples of studies that could be conducted in centres such as Sligo. Local clinicians, Dr. Therese O’Connor Consultant Anaesthetist & Dr. Inam Ulhaq Consultant Psychiatrist in Learning Difficulty, gave brief accounts on their recent personal experience of publishing in BMJ case reports.

Dr. Malachi McKenna has conducted research in clinical disorders of bone and mineral metabolism for many years, in particular clinical studies of vitamin D status. He gave an excellent talk on this research and recent evidence on vitamin D in health and disease. Dr. Sharon McGlynn leads a team of researchers at NUIG, who conduct research into identifying molecular predictors of patient outcome and potential novel therapeutic targets in prostate cancer. She has recently returned to Ireland from the US, where she undertook cutting edge breast cancer research. She gave an insightful talk into her ongoing prostate research at NUIG. Sligo Medical Academy Update Library News Latest news from the Dean Dr. Ger McCarthy The fourth meds and final meds returned to Galway in December 2012 and we welcome a new group of 42 3MB and 4MB students for two semesters in 2013. We particularly welcome Paul Hession, who represented Ireland in the London Olympics 2012 in Athletics and has returned to his studies in Sligo. Thank you to all the staff in Sligo Regional Hospital for their ongoing support of our Medical Students, especially the Strand Leaders. The feedback on the clinical experience in Sligo bas been very positive. There has been some good news with the submission for planning permission for the New Sligo Medical Academy build. This facility will be a purpose built education and training centre, with lecture areas, tutorial rooms, study areas and Clinical Skills lab and is a very welcome development for the Academy.

Congratulations to Dr Bushra Karim (MRCPI) and Dr Eoin O'Suilleabhain (MICGP) who were successful in their professional exams in 2012. Seven Special Study Modules (SSM's) have been developed in Sligo for students at the end of year 4 and a number of students are planning Summer research projects here. We are keen to develop this further and follow up on the success of previous students over the past few years. Congratulations to Donal Fitzpatrick, Cliona Flanagan, Miraslawa Gorecka, Siaw Jing Ha and Cornelia Carey, the winning group for their Clinical Presentation on Clostridium Dificile and a particular mention for Cornelia Carey, who was awarded best speaker. Thank you once again to Liz Cavanagh for all her hard work, organisation and support for the students.

BMJ Best Practice App for iPhone. iPad and iPod – new release available A new release of the Best Practice app is now available on ITunes. Our institutional subscription includes free access to the app and existing app users should update as soon as possible. For those of you who have not already downloaded it, full instructions are available from the Library. The app provides you with reliable, up-to-date information to assist with diagnosis and treatment decisions. Library Ireland Week 2012 The Library celebrated Library Ireland Week in November with a range of competitions, goodie bags, free gifts and a Book Fair run by the Book Nest, Sligo. Some of our library members also entered the national Slogan Competition and the North West produced both the first and fourth prize winners! The winning slogan was “So much to know, just one place to go!” and this won an iPad for Dr Louise Doherty, Specialist in Public Health Medicine in Letterkenny. The fourth prize winner was Dr Emma Harrington, a GP Trainee in Sligo Regional Hospital. Her slogan was, “It links rigour of science and evidence base with healing hands and a caring face.”

HRB / MRCG Grants 2013 The Research & Education Foundation is offering one €20,000 grant in the 2013 HRB/MRCG Funding Scheme. Deadline for submission is February 13 2013.

Abbott’s diagnostics division has made a donation of €5,000 to the Research & Education Foundation recently. This is the third year in succession that Abbott has made a

donation to our charity, with the combined donation over the period totalling €15,000. Thank you to Abbott for the generous grant.

Upcoming Events

Poster printing is available up to size A0. Please contact Orla Heffernan, who is now based in the IT Dept at SRH on level 4 (ext 4531). Grants for research at SRH Ipsen has donated funding towards an EMG Machine and Pfizer towards a 2012 summer research student - both grants are in support of pain research at SRH. Sanofi Aventis has funded a 2012 summer research student for a study into insulin treatment in pregnancy at Dept of Endocrinology led by Dr. Cathy McHugh. Clinical Audit day in May The Clinical Audit Dept & the Foundation are jointly organising a Clinical Audit Day in May 2013. This will be an opportunity to showcase audits from various departments.
