too tired to ask” at SRH in June 2013.

The talk covered the basics of sleep, its importance to health & performance, screening and treatment of sleep disorders.

Dr. Donal O’Shea, leading obesity expert and Director of the Weight Management Clinic at St. Columcille’s Hospital Dublin is coming to Sligo on October 3 2013 to deliver a talk at an open public meeting on Obesity in Childhood at the Clarion Hotel at 8 pm. The event is jointly organised by the Dept of Paediatrics at SRH and the Dietetics Dept at SRH.

The event was chaired by Dr. N Patil and sponsored by Pfizer Ireland. Approved for one CPD credit.

Aimed at anyone with an interest eg parents and older children, schools, health professionals. Do come along and help spread the word!

The Foundation and the Clinical Audit Team at SRH jointly organised the Clinical Audit Forum in May 2013. The quality and quantity of audits presented were a reflection of the firmly embedded audit activity at the hospital. Over thirty posters of audits from a range of departments were on display. Several audits were presented orally. The event was chaired by Dr. Cathryn Bogan. Sponsored by MSD and GlaxoSmithKline.

The 4 and final med students are back after the summer break. They have been busy, with 6 students completing research studentships in Sligo covering diverse topics including Endocrinology, Psychiatry, Rheumatology and joint work with IT Sligo. Many travelled with Voluntary Services Abroad to work in Zambia, Uganda and the Philippines. Thank you to all the Strand Leaders, Clinical Teachers, Tutors, Nursing and all the staff in SRH, for their support of the students over the past year, particularly in these challenging times. The feedback from students has been very positive. This was the first year Special Study Modules were offered in Sligo with excellent programmes on Sport's

Research Seed Grants 2013 Foundation offers €10,000 for research projects The Foundation, in association with Sligo Regional Hospital, launches the Research Seed Grant Scheme. Men’s Health Event June‘13 News Bites Focus on exercise, sports injuries and stress

Pfizer Donation Eating Disorders

Dr. John Newell, Biostatistician at NUIG & the Clinical Research Facility at UHG will revisit SRH during the autumn to deliver two courses on Biostatistics. Dates TBC. Participants will apply statistical techniques using data sets and the software programme Minitab. Cost €60 for one course and €100 for two. Register at Limited places, so register early. Refurbishment of R&E Centre

Pfizer Ireland continues to support the Research & Education Foundation. This year again, the company has made a significant unrestricted grant towards the Foundation. The donation was presented to our charity at the meeting with Dr. Neil Stanley in June 2013. Thank you for the ongoing support.

CAWT, BodyWhys in association with the Research & Education Foundation organised a meeting on Eating Disorders in February 2013 in Sligo. The event was open to anyone with an interest and particularly targeted at GPs and other health professionals. Amongst the speakers were Dr. A Iqbal, Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist (above left) and Dr. Ed O’Mahony, Consultant Psychiatrist at Sligo Mental Health Services. Two clients and a carer gave honest accounts of the difficulties of living with an eating disorder and the road to recovery. Approved for 2.5 CPD credits.

The Lecture room in the Research and Education Centre on level 6 is due for refurbishment this autumn. The IT Dept at SRH is managing the project, which will involve upgrading of Video Conferencing, AV and computer facilities.
