MTA’s 33rd Annual Holiday Trade Show

Have you changed your legal name or tax ID number? As an official third-party recordkeeper, we here at Metro Trading Association ask that you contact us if you are changing your legal name or tax ID number. If you have sales through MTA, your IRS form 1099B gross sales for the calendar year will be sent in January 2011 and reported to the Internal Revenue Service, as required by law. If you change the legal name, status of your business (corporation, partnership, etc.), or Federal Tax ID Number (TIN), you must complete a new IRS Form W-9. Failure to do so maybe subject you to IRS penalties.

OPERATIONS

Dear Member, You are the guest of honor. Your presence on Thursday, November 4th, is important to us and your peers at Metro Trading Association. The association wants to show its appreciation to you. You will be served some of the best cuisine the region has to offer. We want to raise our glass to you and salute you for your grit and determination. You, Mr. and Mrs. Business Owner, have shown us perseverance, determination, and faith. It is our opinion that entrepreneurs like you are the best of us. We want to heap praise and appreciation onto you. We want to celebrate the difficulties you have endured with courage. Life hasn’t been easy for anyone in recent years. My favorite holiday card was sent by the western artist Charlie Russell to his friends. It shows two beleaguered cowboys on a trail in the midst of a snow storm. They are sharing a pint of whiskey on Christmas Day—one heading east, one west. The caption reads: “Here’s hoping the worst of your trail is behind you,” each recognizing that the other would be journeying the trail he had just come from. I wish each MTA member the same. I don’t know if this wretched economy which has caused so much pain and sorrow is half over or if there is more or less to go. I do know that Metro Trading Association can help you. MTA can ease the pain better than whiskey. Use us more. Make MTA a bigger part of your business strategy. Tell us where you have to spend cash and tell me to bring in a new member if we need to. There is no cure to cash flow problems that is better than turning cash expenditures to trade opportunities. Cash purchases diminish your reserves. Only trade purchases save cash and seed future sales for you. Come to the Roostertail on November 4th and use your trade to purchase gifts for those you love. Let MTA help make the holidays of 2010 grand! If you haven’t heard the news, a 5% increase in sales done through MTA will, without fail, increase cash profits by 20%. I salute you, the guest of honor, for all you do and for all you have done. It is my wish that the trail ahead of you be eased by mutual help from member to member—cowboy to cowboy.

making since the early 1940s, the continuously growing Shield’s Restaurant is proud of their involvement with trade. “We’ve been involved with trade for a number of years,” Peter Andoni, co-owner of Shield’s, recalled. “We were just sold on the concept and it’s really worked well for us.” Starting out as a local watering hole on the corner of Davison and Shields Street in Detroit, Peter and his brother, Paul, have grown their business to much beyond the pizza they’ve more recently become known for in the metro Detroit area. “We really made a commitment to

diversifying our menu. Pizza is our backbone—our specialty, but people can come here and get ribs, pastas, burgers, fish, homemade soups, and a variety of daily specials,” Andoni enthused. “The portion of our business that has really been growing by leaps and bounds in this down economy is our off-premise catering. When times were good, workers had no issue spending 15 to 18 dollars per person for lunch. With this economic downturn, people are really pulling in their belts, looking to get the most ‘bang for their buck’—and we’re offering phenomenal lunch delivery programs starting at only 5 to 6

dollars per person. We’re able to handle anything from small offices to groups of almost 1,000.” Metro Trading Association has been able to provide the Shield’s organization with even more avenues of growth. “One of the more beneficial aspects [of trade] is bringing in a brand new set of clients. It increases your exposure—and if you’re disciplined and committed to building your business, advertising on trade is a terrific way of generating cash flow. The misconception of trade is thinking you’re going to lose a cashpaying customer and they are just going to pay in trade instead. What

we’ve noticed is that you’re really bringing in a new customer that you never would have had in the first place.” Aside from being committed to using their trade dollars for advertising, Andoni explains that they have never had a problem spending trade dollars. “We’ve had sealcoating for our parking lots, sign production, dry cleaning, roof repair, and we’ve even been able to purchase our laptops on trade. For advertising, we’ve been able to do direct mail, radio, and cable. We really focus on ways of turning our trade dollars into cash dollars.”

As a note to members who are new to Metro Trading Association, Peter Andoni says to remain openminded. “Open your arms to trade. It’s not an easy concept to grasp— and you have to get over the thought of your cash customers pulling out the MTA card. If you were to poll the current customers you already have, more than likely, less than 1% of them actually belong to a trade association. You’re going to keep the same customers and you’re only going to pick up more through MTA.”

Forgotten Harvest currently rescues over 8 million pounds of food per year by collecting surplus prepared and perishable food from a variety of sources such as grocery stores, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, wholesale food distributors, and other Health Departmentapproved sources. This donated food that would otherwise go to waste is delivered free of charge to emergency food providers in the metro Detroit area. The individuals and families served are as diverse as the community’s residents—young and old, from all races and faiths.
