Michigan’s first trade exchange. Celebrating 32 years in business.

REVOKED MEMBERS Social networking

Centerline Carpet & Tile

Metro Trading Association’s membership committee reviewed and revoked these listed members. These businesses are no longer with the association because of their failure to follow the Rules & Procedures of Metro Trading Association by either not trading fairly, having poor service complaints, or for failure to pay for purchases with new sales.

MTA is proud to announce our arrival to the world of social networking! As a trade and barter association, we have recognized the perfect fit and look forward to connecting further with our members. Be sure to follow our Twitter and Facebook accounts for the latest special offers and news regarding our association!

MTA’s Rules of Fair Trading exists to ensure all participants achieve the same cash profit from business done with the association as they achieve in the cash marketplace. There is no reason to charge more or to charge part cash. Our purpose is to work together in order to help one another succeed. It is a partnership where everyone wins. Those who violate the rules are simply robbing and stealing. Abusing the privilege of being a member is not the solution to the problem.

We need to work together and treat one another fairly. By trading fairly, you not only show professionalism, but you also show that you value your customers and the business they bring you. So, please call your broker if you come across an unfair trade member; your broker is here to recommend another business, and to make sure your complaints are followed up on by the membership committee. As you see, the committee takes action. Therefore, a member of Metro Trading Association cannot fault the association or claim prices higher here than for cash if they do not care to alert the committee empowered to remedy unfair trading.

MEMBERS OF

Dear Member, Recently, my sixteen-year-old grandson, Jay, was planning his first party. He wanted to make sure that everything turned out so that he would have a great party. He wrote down a plan and scheduled tasks. Of course, even then he had some anxiety. I complimented him on his preparations and said: “You know, it’s the people who make the party.” A trade association is similar. The association needs to plan, implement the plan, and provide all the services necessary to make each and every member’s experience a happy one. Our mantra at Metro is: Service, service and more service. But it’s people who make the party. The people we invite to the party are businesses who want an association where local businesses associate to achieve greater sales and profits through cooperation. Sometimes businesses join and say they understand the benefits of cooperation but their actions say otherwise. They are given and know the published, “rules of fair trading”.

MARKETING

They know each and every transaction is to benefit both parties. They know: 1. The price is the same inside and out of the association. 2. They do not charge part cash. However, they are concerned only about themselves. They are not concerned about you or the association you support. You have experienced selfish and self-centered individuals before and you make every effort to avoid them. When you experience them in Metro Trading Association, you must scream out. This is not the way business is conducted here. Call us and we will find a fair trading member for you. Fair traders are the norm. We have no place for a business that will cheat their fellow local business owners. When we hear about a rule-breaker, we will let them know they are mistaken about Metro Trading Association. If they choose to continue treating others in a manner they do not wish to be treated, we tell them there are other places to trade but they are no longer welcome here. Sometimes we hear members say they don’t want to “squeal” or “nark”. I don’t know if they feel the same way about someone who held them up at gun point or broke into their business and stole money and goods. But logic says they should. Do they believe they will be the last victim? Don’t they become the enabler when the rule-breaker continues to victimize? Metro Trading Association recognizes its responsibility to enforce the rules of fair trading as seen in this newsletter. It’s the people who make the party—people of integrity having fun and making money. That’s Metro Trading. Play fair or play elsewhere. Sincerely,

Natasha McKay Leo Young

conduct of business within Metro Trading Association. “I was referred to Metro Trading Association through a friend of mine who had been involved with the organization for a number of years,” Conroy recalled. “It appealed to me to broaden our referral network outside of just the Birmingham and Bloomfield area.” He was quick to reveal his gratitude toward the more practical method of advertising. “We don’t advertise. No one plans on getting in an accident, so for us to direct market is futile. Having referrals come based on a need that we would never know about [without Metro Trading Association] is a bargain,” Conroy divulged. “We draw in customers that would otherwise never make it all the way here to Birmingham. They return not so much for convenience but for the thoroughness of the repair.” Before joining the association, Conroy didn’t find himself harvesting the benefits

from barter that he receives now. “The old-school term is ‘horse trading,’ he stated. “We have all had personal relationships where, in years past, they have a service and then you provide your service in return. You kind of have a side tally, but it’s very difficult to track. It can lead to disputes. That’s why Metro Trading Association is the intermediary; it sits there managing the relationship. It makes it very objective—and that’s critical. With ‘horse trading,’ it was up to interpretation. Here, the rules are established up front and everyone understands. That’s what’s great about it!” “When I meet someone through trade, they have that like mindset—that understanding—that it’s about people,” Conroy continued. “Just from their business approach, they’re more apt to listen and to try to help. [We’ve built] terrific relationships. It transcends the transaction. It’s a first-name basis and that’s where the real comfort comes in.” Conroy is not only dedicated to his

business relationships, but to all of his customers. “We value every interaction. People are typically having a bad day when they come in—so that’s why, as an owner, I try to ascertain their needs, learn a bit about them, and come up with the appropriate solutions to their problems.” A staff of ten employees, Quality Coach Collision is the direct repair shop for major insurance companies in the area. The shop spans across 15,000 square feet of space to accommodate your mechanical needs. As a final note to fellow members, Conroy enthused once more about the power of the referral. “It’s important for us as members to try to help sell the concept and the idea.” “Expanded membership is the key,” he added. “[I say] to other members—find more members. Talk to people, teach them about it, and show them the enthusiasm. It really benefits all of us.”

TRADE TALK

Making the most of barter

PICTURED ABOVE:

Our main office for Metro Trading Association, located in Troy, MI.

M

etro Trading Association is here to work for you. We are pleased to help businesses sell and acquire goods and services, but we need your help in fulfilling the full potential of barter throughout Metro Detroit, Northwest Ohio, and your immediate area. Your help in the following three areas will help us save you time, frustration and will offer more of the goods and services you need.

and let them know you want to build your trade credits. They can give you marketing ideas and your name will be on their minds while handling requests.

USE YOUR BROKER Your trade broker is in contact with other members from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. They are supplied with up-to-date information through computers and have daily contact with their members and the other brokers. Brokers have new member listings, locations, phone numbers, contact names and availability information. Contact your broker if you need to find a product or service. If it’s available, your broker will find it.

HELP YOUR BROKER HELP YOU

Your broker is also the best tool for directing business to you. Call your broker

If you suspect that a business is not abiding by the rules of MTA, please contact your broker as soon as possible. The earlier a problem is identified, the better our chances of rectifying the situation.

When looking in your directory, on the website, or when getting information, you will be given a telephone number and a contact person. Using both of them can save you a great amount of time and frustration. Call ahead, identify yourself as a fellow MTA member, and ask if the product or service you desire is available. This procedure ensures that proper invoices are filled out for the transaction, confirms availability of a product or service, and side-steps employees who don’t know what MTA is all about. Not only will you be expected, you will also have direct access to the person in charge.

GET WHAT YOU NEED THE EASY WAY With nearly 2,000 members, MTA can help you acquire a large number of the goods and services that you need. We know that you can’t always get what you want or need, but with your help, we can build a wider membership base to meet your needs. The recommendation system is the most successful way for our sales staff to bring new members to MTA. Think of the cash purchases you make regularly at home or in the office—wouldn’t it be nice to make those purchases on trade? All you need to do is speak with the potential member about trade, get their name, number, and business address and call or send in the information. Our sales staff finds your recommendations tremendously effective and ensures that our growth reflects your needs. For every successful recommendation, you will not only have another member to effectively trade with, but you will receive $50 in trade credits. Recommendations work! After all, who knows your needs better than you?
