Garlic for good Charity-driven festival dedicated to the pungent bulb brings in the crowds for a cause BY DEBRA ESKINAZI

WORLD-RENOWNED The annual Gilroy Garlic Festival is a three-day event dedicated to the pungent bulb. Drawing crowds from all over the globe, the famous food festival raises money for local nonprofits.

JULY 28, 2017

ow in its 39th year, the Gilroy Garlic Festival has put itself to the test and set out to prove its standing in the world as the world’s largest garlic festival. Well it turns out the folks over at Guinness approve, because Friday, July 28, 2017, representatives from Guinness World Records will officially recognize the Gilroy Garlic Festival as the world record holder for the largest attendance at a garlic festival. According to the Garlic Festival staff, the record was set in 2011 with a reported 109,067 attendees. “For years they had us on their books as the largest unofficial largest,” says executive director Brian Bowe. “But we went through the entire application process and now we are officially the world’s largest.” ➝ 6

Often touted not only as the world’s largest, but greatest, I wondered what makes the Garlic Festival so great? And just how did that play into this year’s Bigger, Better, Bolder theme? Garlic Festival president, Mike Zukowski says it was a theme the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association carried with them and applied throughout the preparation for this year’s festival. “Go bigger, better and bolder— we challenged that at every nook and cranny of what we’ve been trying to do.” He said they were often asking themselves, “We’re the biggest and best, what do we got to do to own that?!” Zukowski includes among his list the relocation of the Gilroy Garli-Que BBQ Challenge, a Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) sanctioned competition—“making it more accessible and a greater feature in our festival. We’ve got 30 professional people coming in [to barbecue].” Zukowski added he was also excited about the new Gilroy garlic shrimp appearing in Gourmet Alley. “That’s a tasty dish and I knew our city could add something that could really connect,” he says. “The fact the our cook-off stage

has just gone through the roof to be able to have Giada and Shaun O’Neale there and to have the Champions for Charity—all these different things,” says Zukowski. “The Garlic Festival Association really challenged themselves to keep the festival fresh.” Zukowski says the elevated status that the Garlic Festival has received to warrant the likes of celebrity chefs including Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis and MasterChef winner Shaun O’Neale have really lent credence to the quality of the festival. De Laurentiis is an Italian-born American chef and host of Food Network’s Giada at Home and Everyday Italian. “I’ve heard a lot of great things about this festival and I’m excited to visit the garlic capital of the world,” says De Laurentiis. “I’m excited to see all the different varieties of garlic and become more knowledgeable about the world of garlic. It’s a big part of my cuisine and one of my favorite ways to add flavor to any dish.” De Laurentiis will emcee the festival’s famed Garlic Showdown on Sunday, July 30—a serious Iron-Chef style battle between local professional chefs. According to a press release, De

Laurentiis will also prepare one of her own favorite garlic-laced recipes on the Garlic Cook-Off stage and hold a question-and-answer session with Festival visitors. “We’ve had celebrities in the past, but this is part of our bigger, better, bolder,” says Zukowski. O’Neale, winner of Food Network’s MasterChef season 7 in 2016 will emcee the Champions for Charity event on Friday, July 28. The event, now in its second year, tests the culinary talents of teams of local first responder heroes (including one Cal Fire team and three EMS teams) in a three-round cooking challenge to win $3,000 for the charity of their choice. O’Neale, who prior to winning MasterChef was a professional DJ from Vegas, will also do a special flame-up for visitors and notes that a garlic is prevalent aroma in his cooking. “Roasted garlic has pretty much become the trademark scent in my house and 60 percent of my recipes in one shape or another use roasted garlic,” says O’Neale. “The other 40 percent use some form of chopped or minced or regular garlic added at one point or another in the

cooking process. So almost everything that I make has garlic in it.” O’Neale will be demoing a roasted garlic risotto, which is a featured recipe in his new cookbook, My American Table, released in May in 2017. “I’ve always wanted to make it to the festival,” says O’Neale “It’s one of the festivals that I’ve seen on TV so many times since I started watching travel shows.” And, it’s not just Americans that want to head to the Garlic Festival. “I think we are world class,” says Zukowski. “We have people travelling from all over the world to be part of this event.” Zukowski says it’s become sort of a part of people’s bucket list, but for Zukowski it’s more about the ‘why’. “I think the fact that we’ve been able to sustain and give back and be connected to the community as well as have people like Shaun O’Neale and Giada willing to come and say yeah ‘we recognize that and this would be a great thing for us to be able to be part of too’,” says Zukowski. “We’ve got more than 100 arts and crafts people coming this year. We’ve got more than 60 plus unique food vendors, new wine garden,” he says, pointing to an open area in Christmas Hill Park just beyond the gazebo stage. “It’s going to be this beautiful wine garden that you’re gonna get to stroll through with all the local vineyards represented.” “The biggest point of all this for me comes back to the ‘why’, about our community, about that aspect of we are a world-class charity-driven celebration of garlic,” says Zuskowki. “This is about what we get to do with our 130 nonprofits. This is stuff we are all coming together to do. The ‘why’ has always been our thing. We are charity-driven. We are trying to do something for our community.” Bowe had yet another measure of success for the Garlic Festival. “I think the best way to validate or measure the metric of greatness is that for a community this size—and everyone of us has experienced this— you go anywhere in the country or even the world ...as soon as you say Gilroy, almost everyone will respond and say ‘oh garlic’ or often times ‘Garlic Festival’ that’s pretty great for a hometown of 55,000 residents to be recognized like that,” says Bowe.

T

he 2017 Gilroy Garlic Festival, taking place on, July 28, 29, and 30, at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy, promises to be, “bigger, better and bolder than ever before.” This year’s festival is jam-packed with food, fun and garlic of course. To ensure that you don’t miss a thing, here’s a list of this year’s don’t miss events and activities. 1. Food reigns king at the greatest summer food festival on the planet, and what better way to celebrate the love of food than to catch special appearances of Food Network superstar, Giada de Laurentiis.

2. Master Chef, season seven winner, Shaun O’Neale, joins the Festival’s “Pyro Chefs”, to show off his “flame up” skills, and will also emcee the ‘Champions for Charity’ cooking competition. 3. It bears repeating, the Garlic Festival has been proclaimed as the greatest summer food festival, ever, and this year a new culinary treat, deep-fried Gilroy garlic shrimp, has been added to the already amazing menu. Make sure to get a sampling of the new dish. Of course, all the palate-pleasing favorites of the past years will also be featured: pepper steak sandwiches, stuffed mushrooms, pasta con pesto, sausage sandwiches,

garlic bread and the star cuisine of the Festival, Gilroy garlic fries. 4. If you’re worried about all the calories consumed at the festival, burn them off by dancing and grooving to more than 50 bands and musicians performing at this year’s event. 5. The children’s area is moving to a new location near the amphitheater stage and Gate 1, with all the same attractions including, rides and games, crafts, face painting and rock-climbing, puppet, Ronald McDonald shows and Funk’n Folk Music with Lori & RJ. 6. The second annual Gilroy Garli-Que BBQ Challenge takes place on Saturday—an officially sanctioned Kansas City Barbeque Society contest. A must taste! 7. More than 100 of the finest artists and craftsmen from around the country will be displaying their unique creations, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, photography, glass, wood and mixed media. There will be something of interest for everyone. 8. Be on the lookout for this year’s Garlic Festival Queen, Maggie Pickford, and her royal garlic court. 9. Check out this year’s Garlic Festival Art Poster Contest winning design, created by artist, Diane Grosman, of Winter Haven, Florida. It was her love of the California landscape, which she considers, “completely unique,” that inspired the design of her winning poster. 10. And of course no festival is complete without a visit to Gourmet Alley, where the “Pyro Chefs” conjure up mouth-watering sensations for all to enjoy. Displaying their culinary abilities, the Chefs outdo themselves each year, preparing festival specialties in huge iron skillets in the gigantic outdoor kitchen. You haven’t experienced the heart of the Garlic Festival, until you’ve experienced the magic of the “Pyro Chefs.”

hillsides before they burn off.” The artist explained that originally, she had a vision, but as she worked with the piece she, “let it do its thing.” Originally from Boston, Grosman attended the New England School of Art and Design, where she studied graphic design. She worked consistently in her field from her graduation in 1976, until her retirement in 2015. Most of that time was spent in Simi Valley, after relocating there in 1978 to raise her four children. Grosman’s love of Gilroy developed during the road trips she and her family took to San Francisco, to visit her in-laws. The garlic capital

iane Grosman has a message for the city of Gilroy, “Don’t ever stop the Garlic Festival, because it’s an inspiration,” the 2017 Garlic Festival art poster contest winner stated. The intention behind her prize-winning design was to create a representation of the California landscape. “I was trying to represent the clouds that are coming from the hills, the canyons, that actually blow out into the Pacific,” Grosman says. “The fogginess of the hillsides around Gilroy. The way the morning clouds hug the

soon became a routine stop, once they discovered the ice cream. “Garlic ice cream being probably one of the most amazing things I’ve ever tasted in my life,” Grosman says, adding, I love all things garlic.” In 2012 she moved once again, this time on her own, to Winter Haven, Florida. “I wanted to make some changes in my life, so at 59, I packed up my car and drove cross-country to be with my daughter and my grandson in Florida,” Grosman says. Not long after her arrival, Grosman’s daughter, singer Amy Irwin, introduced her to George Grosman, a jazz musician. Three years later, the two were married. “Our house is filled with art and music,” Grosman says, adding that it was her husband who pushed her to get back into art. It was the first time in my life I actually had somebody encourage me to do art, and I blossomed.” Grosman heard about the art poster contest from an acquaintance that suggested she enter. “The last phone call I got from the gentleman telling me that I’d won, I was thinking, maybe I’d placed second or third. I had no idea I was going to be in first place. I know how prestigious it is. I’m on the map,” Grosman says. Grosman’s current painting preference is a combination of acrylics, and surprisingly, Magic Markers. “I’ll actually bleed the Magic Markers out, and then bring it back in, or control it a little bit more with acrylic paint. The poster I did for Gilroy, was done like that. I started out with a flair tip, and then from there I went on to acrylic,” Grosman says. She’s excited to continue on her artistic journey, and feels a sense of pride regarding her most recent work. “Even if I didn’t win, I knew it was the best poster I’d ever done. It was me at my best, it really represented what I could do. For the first time in my life I felt like an artist,” Grosman says.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP Lifelong volunteer and Garlic Festival President, Mike Zukowski puts the people first.

Gilroyan Mike Zukowski rolls up his sleeves for the community JULY 28, 2017

ith more than three decades of experience volunteering for the Garlic Festival, Mike Zukowski says serving as the festival’s president this year fell right into place with his lifelong commitment to serving his community. As a marriage family therapist for nine years and nearly 20 years as a youth pastor at South Valley Community Church before that, Zukowski says “together these efforts have really prepared him for the larger endeavor of the Garlic Festival president”. But Zukowski, 47, never had any plans to be president. “It wasn't in my mind, I just wanted to solve problems,” he says.

Zukowski says working on something as huge as the Garlic Festival plays off of both his skillsets, “working with youth and working with volunteers, doing programs and bringing excitement into events. Being able to really work with the nitty gritty of things.” As former chair for the parking lot committee—part of South Valley Community Church’s volunteer gig for the Garlic Festival and later working with the board, Zukowski has long been in roles of leadership. “My heart had always been in mentoring others,” says Zukowski. “I’ve mentored lots of leaders in the community.” The current chair for the parking lot committee was in junior

high when he first began working with Zukowski. “It’s fun to be able to see the opportunities to mentor and develop community leaders through this as well as help them catch a vision of how they can make the community better by giving back,” says Zukowski. “I think that’s been the heart for me out of this whole thing.” Although he’s had pivotal roles in parking development and dramatically changing how the festival parking and traffic impact the city, Zukowski says he’s always worked in the background to help people. “I’ve delegated as much as I can and empowered as many people as I can to do what they do great, which is what I wanted to do,” he says. “I’m more of a collaborative leader that way.” Drawing upon his background in mental health, Zukowski considers this festival akin to immune system to our community. “If were able to support 140150 charities and raise their level of impact in our communities, we’ve just raised the water for everybody and all the boats float,” he says. “When an immune system is low in a community things go wrong...people get sick, the community gets sick, and so we’re just trying to sustain that.” Zukowski knows this kind of success doesn’t happen in a silo, whether it’s one of the 4,000 volunteers or the support from their loved ones, he recognizes contributions people make to push things forward. One of the best parts for Zukowski is to see this really come full-circle. “I have leaders that I’ve led that are now leading my kids—and they’ll provide a place for them to lead in the future. It’s a huge way of giving back and I want [the kids] to see that.” Zukowski says awesome things happen when everybody shows up, shoulder-to-shoulder, ready to work. “People roll up their sleeves and they really get involved and they become committed to really doing hard work alongside others— stuff happens and we create good change,” says Zukowski.

aggie Pickford stood nervously on the stage, watching as her fellow contestants stepped out of line, accepting their ranking in Gilroy Garlic Queen pageant. “When they call your name, you’re supposed to step out of the line and pose,” said Pickford. The Gilroy High School senior was sure one of the eight young women beside her would be crowned queen. And then they called her name. “I was so shocked, I just stepped out and started shaking.” Pickford, 18, was raised in Gilroy and heard of the pageant through family friends. She decided to participate in the pageant on a whim, attributing her decision to senioritis and the

compulsion to try something new. Once she was accepted, she began attending classes two times a week to prepare. For three months, Pickford and the eight other contestants honed their skills for the pageant’s five challenges, which included a personal interview, a talent performance, a speech, and an on-stage question-and-answer. During the classes, the contestants were very supportive of each other, according to Pickford. The young women gave each other useful critiques—helping each other prepare to demonstrate their talents and abilities to the panel of five judges. On May 13, 2017, the young women arrived at the Gilroy Amphitheatre at Gilroy Gardens, ready to begin the pageant. Of the four

challenges, Pickford admitted she was the most nervous for the interview. She described the interview as entering a room with a large table with five judges seated along the far side of the table. The judges came from various experiences, including agriculture, small businesses, education, and youth outreach, each judge representing a different “sphere” of Gilroy. As the judges asked her a questions, the two pageant chairs who helped prepare the contestants sat behind her. “It was very intimidating,” said Pickford. “Since the pageant chairs trained us, they knew whenever we answered a question wrong.” Another challenging part of the contest for Pickford was the talent portion. She in no way lacks talent—she has played the violin for 14 years. However, she said that it was nerve-wracking to play by herself. “Playing the violin is very personal, and it was a big step for me to play in front of the crowd.” It was a risk that proved worthwhile: she played “Lully Gavott” by Jean-Baptiste Lully, winning the talent contest and receiving a $1,000 scholarship from the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association (GGFA). Looking forward, the Garlic Queen has a busy summer ahead. Currently, she is attending a few GGFA meetings, getting to know the facilitators of the festival. During the three days of the festival, guests will see Pickford and her court greeting people, visiting different booths with the court, and hosting the Garlic Queen from Takko-Machi, Gilroy’s sister city in Japan. In September, Pickford and her court will travel to Japan and visit Takko-Machi’s Garlic Festival. After finishing her summer reign as the 2017 Garlic Queen, Pickford will be attending UCLA in the fall with the intention of studying Psychobiology. Though there is anticipation for this next step, Pickford is not too worried: she has discovered she is capable of more than she thinks. For those interested in wearing the crown next year, she advises them to “Be confident. It’s not as scary as it’s made out to be.”

WINE

Winetastic delight

CHEERS Life is too short to drink bad wine—try a glass or two from among 15 wineries at this year’s Gilroy Garlic Festival.

Wine Pavilion grows into a garden

W

ine tasting just got a whole lot more fun with this year’s 39th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival. The old, tented Wine Pavilion is giving way to an open-air Wine Garden. “It’s an exciting year,” says Whitney Pintello, president of the Gilroy Rotary. “The Wine Garden will have a more upscale gourmet wine and food festival feel, matching this year’s “Bigger, Bolder, Better” theme of the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Our new location on the park side of the festival, puts us closer to live music and the gourmet cook-off stage. The tasting area will be in the Mulberry picnic area, dotted with shady trees and water-misters. We think the wineries will enjoy more visibility and

more interaction with guests in this new location.” A $9 ticket will get you either a frozen Mimosa, a full glass of wine or three wine-tastes. The 15 local wineries for this year’s Wine Garden include: Creekview Vineyards, Fortino Winery, Guglielmo Winery, Hecker Pass Winery, Kirigin Cellars, Medeiros Family Wines, Miramar Vineyards, Morgan Hill Cellars, Rapazzini Winery, Sarah’s Vineyard, Satori Cellars, Solis Winery, Stefania Winery, Sunlit Oaks Winery and Wildeye Winery. Bistro tables made from donated Fortino wine barrels will hold umbrellas for additional shading. The Garlic Festival is the Rotary’s largest fundraiser of the year, with proceeds averaging $50,000 over the three-day event. Says

Pintello, “Every bit of the money goes to our local, non-profits, mainly youth organizations such as Rebekah Children’s Services, St. Joseph’s Family Center, Community Solutions, Arts Alive and Sober Grad Night. As always, we will have our Rotary Project Share Life booth which encourages patrons to register for the National bone marrow registry.” One of Gilroy’s well-respected and best-loved artists, Pintello has participated for the last 11 years at the festival with her own art booth. Specializing in old-world and whimsical wine motifs, many customers come to the festival just to visit Pintello and to add to their collections of her artwork. “The Garlic Festival is my favorite festival—it’s like a homecoming for me.”
