dysseus’s long and trying voyage is a perfect metaphor for the start of a new school year. Students are set free for the first time and many have to make important decisions for themselves for the first time. There are temptations to be sure, the sirens of partying, endless nights, entertainment, balanced with the Scylla and Charybdis of making it to classes and getting those highly-valued great grades. It’s one of the great challenges and an important step toward a life of adulting. While more students are moving away from liberal arts and literature in favor of tech studies, there is much to be learned from the classics, as our article by Richard Stockton shows: ‘“UCSC professor Martin Devecka thinks a 3,000-year-old strategic schemer named Odysseus

has something to teach students trying to navigate 2026.” This class, boosted by the unlikely hit movie, The Odyssey, shows what educators have preached for centuries: studying the classics and understanding them is one of the best things a school can offer. What about when it all goes wrong? Health writer Elizabeth Borelli has tips for how to avoid the hangover that comes with the perils of sudden unlimited freedom. Cabrillo College is sometimes nicknamed Cabri-hab because of students who flunked out of prominent schools and had to come back home to start over. She has tips about how not to be one of them. Finally, we all need a break from the studies and comedian-writer DNA has a list of comedy venues for the best medicine.

DOORWAY TO THE ODYSSEY

Doorway to the Odyssey A UCSC class studies the modern and ancient works of Homer BY RICHARD STOCKTON
U
CSC professor Martin Devecka thinks a 3,000-year-old strategic schemer named Odysseus has something to teach students trying to navigate 2026. Christopher Nolan isn't the first storyteller to hook us on The Odyssey. Homer, or whoever Homer was, did it nearly 3,000 years ago. This winter, UC Santa Cruz Associate Professor Martin Devecka will bring both versions into LIT 81A, Introduction to Homer’s Odyssey. Devecka expects many students will walk into his class knowing Nolan’s movie better than Homer’s poem. He’s cool with that. “The movie can be a way into the poem.” Nolan’s movie may be a doorway, but Devecka is excited about what this ancient poem might have to say to 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds trying to figure out their own way through a world that looks increasingly difficult to navigate; as AI reshapes the professions they’re preparing to enter and the concern of whether an expensive college education still guarantees anything resembling the old college-to-career path. “You have a whole generation
6
STUDENT GUIDE | GOODTIMES.SC | 2026
growing up in a situation that is very much like the one that Odysseus faces time and time again throughout this poem,” Devecka says. Odysseus is perpetually outgunned. The Cyclops is bigger. The Laestrygonians, a tribe of man-eating giants, are stronger. The suitors outnumber him. Again and again, brute force cannot save him. What does is metis, a Greek word that can mean cleverness, cunning or practical intelligence. The most famous example comes when Odysseus is trapped by the Cyclops Polyphemus and says his name is “Nobody.” After Odysseus blinds him, the Cyclops screams to his neighbors that Nobody is attacking him. Devecka points out there is a second joke when Greek words create another pun involving metis. The Cyclops effectively says that “cleverness” defeated him. Devecka says, “Students this year will have more to learn from Odysseus than students in previous years ever have.” But metis alone could produce a pretty bleak lesson: The world is dangerous. You’ve got to outsmart everybody. That's where another Greek word
becomes important in Devecka's class. Xenia. Usually translated as hospitality or guest-friendship, xenia describes obligations between strangers: I welcome you to my home. I feed you. I don’t hurt you. You don’t trash the place. Civilization continues. When I asked Devecka what he hoped might stick with a student after LIT 81A was over, he said, “hospitality and openness.” He hopes students think about “the possibility of building a world around that.” When metis asks, “How do I make my way through this world?” and xenia asks, “What kind of world do we want to build once we get there?”, Devecka's class begins to look relevant to 2026. That said, LIT 81A will not be ten weeks of solemn contemplation of the fate of Western civilization. Devecka said the fundamental purpose of Homer was essentially the same as Nolan's movie, to entertain the audience. And Devecka relishes the fun parts; the Cyclops cave, Odysseus fighting a beggar and the famous bow scene. One of Devecka’s favorites is the athletic competition in Book 8. Devecka said,
“It seems like one of the throwaway books in the Odyssey, because it's just a track and field day, right?” Underneath what looks like an ancient track meet, Devecka sees an intricate social negotiation involving strangers and hosts, competition, status and power, “… a really intricate kind of social interaction.” Odysseus is a stranger among the “xenophobic” Phaeacians and needs their help getting home, he has every reason to be polite. Then one of his hosts basically calls him a loser who doesn’t lift. Odysseus insults the guy back and hurls a discus farther than everyone else. Then he muses about other sports he's good at, like stabbing people with spears. The hosts decide maybe dancing would be more fun. Nolan gives modern audiences a more comfortable Odysseus, a hero who experiences remorse, cares about his crew and wrestles with the moral consequences of his actions. Homer’s guy? “He doesn’t feel remorse for anything,” Devecka says. When I asked what Odysseus ultimately learns from his journey, Devecka said, “In Homer’s fiction, I would say nothing.” Odysseus learns facts; who betrayed him, who remained loyal, whom he can trust, but he doesn't undergo the Hollywood transformation into a better man. “It’s not about learning ethical lessons that can be on Sesame Street,” Devecka says. “It’s about learning to learn about the world. Learning to investigate the world.” For a generation that is being told to compete harder, adapt faster, master new technologies and somehow build a meaningful life, that may be the real draw of LIT 81A. Students have legitimate reasons to wonder whether the old map to adulthood still works. When the map stops working, maybe learning how Odysseus navigates isn't such an antiquated idea.

ongratulations and welcome to Santa Cruz. A small beach town community that prides itself on “being weird.” And what is weirder than gathering with a bunch of strangers and laughing together for 90 minutes? Enter Santa Cruz’ long history of stand-up comedy. There is a growing list of comedy success stories with UCSC graduates like Emily Catalano, Grant Lyon, Chad Opitz, Emily Heller and Jordan Thewlis touring the country, and in Catalano’s case, the world. If you are under 21 there is no need to worry about access to comedy shows because there are plenty of venues that you can attend. While the majority of the shows are free, remember to tip. Tips are often the difference between shows losing money and breaking even. It’s a micro-economy funded by mostly volunteer work. Each show has its own host(s) and its own vibe - but all operate under a banner of respect with zero tolerance for hate speech. Sunday out in the Harvey West part

of town, near CostCo, is a small brewery doing big things. UCSC graduate Caroline Hawkins hosts this comedy open mic. You can sign up at 6:30pm and the show starts at 7pm at Shanty Shack (138 Fern St, Santa Cruz). Free and 21+ Also, the long-running Sunday comedy at Crow’s Nest (2218 East Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz) has an all ages policy. Food and drink are required to sit in the upstairs comedy room. The show starts at 9pm and there is a $10 admission. This show is for tourists and hardcore surfers and features professional and local comics. 18+ Monday has two under-21 options for stand up comedy. Located through and beyond Abbott Square’s food court (725 Front Street, Santa Cruz), you can enter the secret garden. This show is produced by the hardest working comic in Santa Cruz, Paulie Escobedo, and he has curated a collective of comics that help host this free outdoor comedy show. See some of the best comics in the Bay Area at this very fun show at 7pm. Free and 18+
Later Monday night, at 9pm in the back of Rosie McCann’s (1220 Pacific Ave, Santa Cruz) you can find a unique comedy show that is interactive and called Bucket List. Host Megan Kellie is a skilled improver and this is a chance for you to determine what topics the comics talk about. Free and 18+ Tuesdays are at The Blue Lagoon (923 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz) and located downtown in the side room of Santa Cruz’s most extreme punk rock venue. It’s the longest running free weekly comedy show in California and is hosted by Escobedo. Bay Area and local comics headline a long procession of comics and voices. Live music by Lee & The Blue Lagoonies House Band and the music starts at 7:45pm with comedy at 8:15pm. Free and 21+ Every other Wednesday, on the far west side of town at Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing (402 Ingalls St #27, Santa Cruz) is a very upbeat collegiate show. UCSC graduate Rich Isaac hosts a line-up from around the Bay Area. Free and 21+ Thursdays at Gilman Brewing
Company (817 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz) has a comedy show hosted by the dynamic duo Brittnii Potter and BJ Rankin. A cool spot with very strong comedy line-ups at 7pm. Free and 18+ A monthly comedy show that always falls on a Thursday, is at Woodhouse Brewing & Blending (119 Madrone St, Santa Cruz). Hosted by Escobedo and featuring the best comics in Santa Cruz and the greater Bay Area at 7:30pm. Free and 21+ The first Friday of each month has a specialty comedy show at downtown’s 418 Project (155 S. River Street, Santa Cruz). From a master class on crowd work to funny one-person shows, 418 is always trying to find the weird in things. Tickets are $20 and the shows are in a funky old movie theatre and start at 8pm. 18+ Also monthly on the last Saturday is westside’s Mission West (2405 Mission St, Santa Cruz) run by the human Sasquatch Michael Booth. Booth is out every night doing comedy somewhere and brings the freshest voices to his shows. Mission West is at 8pm and $15. 21+ Monthly shows occur on Saturdays in Scotts Valley and up in the mountain town of Felton. At Bruno’s (230 Mount Hermon Rd, Scotts Valley) and hosted by Booth. This show is $10 and always features a hot headliner from the Bay Area and start at 8pm. 18+ And in the mountains on a monthly Saturday is a ticketed $17 showcase at The Felton Music Hall (6275 Hwy 9, Felton). This is the biggest room for comedy around and mountain man good guy Nic Trevino hosts this humor and music showcase. 18+ October 12th through the 17th is the 13th Annual Santa Cruz Comedy Festival. Featuring 75 comedians over six days. Plenty of free and under 21 options. It peaks on Saturday, October 17th with ten venues in downtown, hosting comedians from around the country. There’s a somatic body workshop with comic Tony Nagy, free stand-up shows with comics like Lara Beitz in record and barber shops, and something for everyone. STUDENT LOSE THE GUIDE HANGOVER becomes optional and nobody is checking whether you got out of bed, skipping can become a slippery slope. Communication matters. Talk with professors, teaching assistants and classmates when you don’t understand the material. One assistant professor offered this advice: “Take advantage of office hours. You’re not wasting our time by showing up, we won’t think you’re stupid, and nobody will laugh at you. I love when students come to my office hours and I can break out the whiteboard and go over stuff with them.” Another recent graduate advises students to do the homework, even when it seems insignificant, because those points add up. And if you realize you’ve chosen the wrong major, explore your options early rather than accumulating classes you may not need.

Lose the Hangover Welcome to Adulting in College BY ELIZABETH BORELLI
T
he college years mark one of life’s biggest transitions. Change is challenging at any age, so imagine being uprooted in your late teens to live, study and socialize with strangers, often in a new city, state or even country. Welcome to adulting. For many students, college is one of the most growth-intensive periods of life. There’s newfound freedom, new friends, academic pressure and the sudden responsibility of managing your own schedule, sleep, meals, money and health. So what could go wrong? For starters, there’s novelty overload. Even after freshman year, establishing new routines takes energy. It’s remarkably easy to get off a regular sleep, meal and exercise schedule. Then there’s the “Yay, no one to rein me in” influence on decision-making. As one local expert put it, students can spend the first semester partying
10
STUDENT GUIDE | GOODTIMES.SC | 2026
and the next recovering from the cumulative effects. Too much alcohol and too little sleep eventually catch up with the best of us. Whether you’re a new student or a concerned loved one, avoiding the poor health and academic struggles that can accompany the transition to college is possible. It doesn’t mean locking yourself in the library, either. Social connection is an important part of wellbeing and one of the best parts of the college experience. The goal is to create enough structure to keep the maelstrom manageable.
CHOOSE YOUR CROWD One place to start is by understanding the power of social influence. Research suggests that our social networks can influence behaviors ranging from exercise and drinking to academic engagement. In college, where belonging can feel especially important,
the people around us can have a powerful effect on everyday choices. Choose wisely. Look for people whose habits support the college experience you want to have. Friends who go to class, get outside, exercise, eat reasonably well and know when it’s time to call it a night can make those choices feel easier for you, too. College friendships can become some of the most meaningful relationships of your life.
MAKING THE GRADE When it comes to avoiding the lowgrade trap, recent graduates offer remarkably straightforward advice, beginning with what some call Rule #1: GO. TO. CLASS. “Even if you don’t really understand what’s going on in class, still go, even just to take notes. The finals week, you will thank the today-you.” It sounds obvious, but once attendance
Healthy eating can be surprisingly challenging in the dorms, especially for students navigating food choices on their own for the first time. A dorm-room “Mediterranean pantry” can help. Stock nuts and nut butter, oatmeal, whole-grain crackers, fruit, hummus and easy protein options. In the dining hall, keep the formula simple. A good guideline for a balanced plate contains equal parts vegetables, protein and whole grains with room for healthy fats. Sleep deserves equal billing. Pulling an occasional late night may be part of college life, but routinely sacrificing sleep can affect attention, memory, mood and academic performance. Exercise can help manage stress, even when it’s nothing more elaborate than walking across campus, biking to class or joining an intramural team.
STAY SOCIAL Go to the quirky campus event that sounds interesting. Join a club. Try an intramural sport, volunteer, attend a lecture or look through the school website for organizations that match your interests. You don’t need to arrive at college knowing where you belong. Build relationships with classmates, professors and TAs. Ask questions when you’re confused. Get to know the people around you. Those relationships can provide friendship and support now and may eventually lead to mentors, professional connections and recommendation letters. A few simple anchors can make the transition easier. Go to class, get enough sleep, eat some plants, move your body, ask for help and surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you. Then go have some fun.

Kings gets bonus points for having front-loading washers and being located right next to Nob Hill Foods. Open daily 7am-11pm. 222-B Mt. Hermon Road, Scotts Valley, 831-234-8117.
SEASIDE WASH & DRY
The days of waiting for a machine are over: this Mission Street operation features 26 state-of-the-art Electrolux front-load washing machines, and seven Maytag top-load washers, plus 25 dryers in different sizes. Also offers credit and debit card technology on many of these machines. Open daily 7am-9pm.
got a right-facing wave that, if you can maneuver around the flock, is to die for.
MANRESA/LA SELVA
Manresa is a mélange of peaks, valleys and sandbars. But a lot of the time the place is epic, breaking left and right and all over the place. Expect a long, grueling paddle during the wintertime to the outside and nil to no summertime surf—unless there’s a south swell.
NATURAL BRIDGES
When the conditions are just right, like an 8-foot west swell, this spot has the best tube rides available. It’s a speedy right that peaks over an outer reef and peels toward the beach.

SUPER SUDS
A small- to medium-sized mat, this sudsy spot is pretty clean and located next to a 7-Eleven, Upper Crust Pizza, New Leaf Market, Mission West Bar, and across the street from Taqueria La Cabaña. If you are up to it, it is also walking distance from Kelly’s French Bakery. Open daily 6am-11pm. 2429B Mission St., Santa Cruz, 831-889-7837.
UNIVERSITY WASH N DRY
A coin’s throw from the Mission and Laurel street bus stop, this laundromat is also in close proximity to three eateries (Chinese, Thai or Mexican), so you can fit a meal in while the machines take care of your dirty work. High ratings on Facebook and free wi-fi. Open daily 7am-10pm. 1232 Mission St., Santa Cruz, 831-466-9118.
SURF SPOTS CAPITOLA JETTY
When the swell is up, a nice left careens in front of the jetty and the right can go on forever, assuming your skag doesn’t snag in the kelpinfested water. Also, about a block and a reef away is the infamous Toe’s Over, which needs a huge winter swell and a minus low tide to break. But when it does, it’s pure left- and right-breaking bliss.
COWELLS
The bunny slope of surfing gets its fair share of beginners, but it also has nice sloping waves that go on forever. Easy access and easy attitudes.
FOUR MILE
Here, locals tend to stare hard and long at newcomers. Because of its bluff-protected location, Four Mile isn’t affected (as much) by the afternoon summer winds as most spots on the North Coast. Reaches its full potential during west, northwest 10-foot-and-above swells.
THE HOOK
Named for the copious amounts of kelp in the lineup that “hooks” around skags and booties, this nice little point break also has a lot of surfers that are “hooked” on the spot. Nevertheless, it’s
14
STUDENT GUIDE | GOODTIMES.SC | 2026
Longboard paradise. Clean right-facing lines peel off and make for a great ride that will take you all the way into the break known as Trees and into the Capitola Wharf. Well, not quite, but the ride is long and the waves are gentle. Easygoing, without all the soft-board hassles of Cowells to spoil your wave.
SCOTT CREEK
A potent combination of a beach and reef break, Scott dishes out about every challenge a surfer can handle. From long paddles and strong currents and rips to sharky waters and unpredictable peaks, Scott isn’t for the faint of heart—or arms. But when it goes off, it’s heaven on water. Breaks best with a powerful north swell.
STEAMER LANE
Perhaps the most classic break in the world, Steamer Lane more than lives up to its reputation. With four reef breaks rolled into one spot—The Point, Middle Peak, The Slot and Indicators—the Lane has it all, including ogling tourists. There’s even a surfing museum in the nearby lighthouse.
THREE MILE
Primo reef break that is usually uncrowded, especially during weekdays. Named after the number of miles after Swift Street, it cops a great right line, particularly during a winter northwest swell.

This place is generally crowded with everyone from groms to experts, longboarders to ultra thin-glassed rippers. Practice, as always, common courtesy and you should be all right in the outer, best breaks.
This is probably the cleanest, most sparkling medium-sized mat out there. The downside is that it is right next to the entrance to UCSC, and there are not many shops or cafes. It is next to Slug Books and a 7-Eleven. Open daily 7am-10pm.

STUDENT GUIDE | GOODTIMES.SC | 2026
agnolia Gallery is truly the result of great focus & hard work. My journey has been interesting! First of my siblings to graduate high school, and first in my family to go to college, I graduated from UC Santa Cruz in premedical Biology with triple honors. Midstudies, I immersed myself in Japanese language and Martial arts, earning my black belt – and gaining broadened perspective.
PUBLICATION DATE: Wednesday, October 7 SPACE RESERVATION DEADLINE: Wednesday, October 1
After UC Santa Cruz, hospital medical life just did not appeal – I became a proficient baker/chef, Certified Nutritionist, & eventually Senior Researcher/Formulator for Source Naturals Vitamins/Planetary Herbals. For 18 years I created complex vitamin/ herb formulations, specializing in flavor development and solving manufacturing technical issues. With a deep appreciation for the unique and beautiful, I set out in a new direction - I wanted to design a space where just walking in created a feeling, a sense of balance & peace. Magnolia Gallery was born, featuring quality women’s clothing, exceptional jewelry, unique art pieces & fine home decor. I believe I have created something magical with Magnolia.
