Earlier this summer Larry Laba announced the news that this would be his last year of renting out inflatable kayaks for self-guided floats down the Russian River. He founded his business, Russian River Adventures, 26 years ago, and he thinks it might be time for someone else to have all the fun. “I’ve always believed this business has to be owner-operated,” Laba said from his current warehouse/office on upper Healdsburg Avenue, not far from Memorial Bridge. “You can’t manage the river experience from an office. The stewardship, the customer service and the relationship with the river all require someone who’s here every day.” Now in his 70s, he remembers “getting into this line of work” when he was about 40. “You

Video images of the destruction of the World Trade
Center towers dominated the national consciousness, and locals felt them deeply. An impromptu gathering took place in the Plaza three days later on Friday, Sept. 14, 2001. People came to sing, pray,
light candles and take comfort in the community. Over the next few years, Healdsburg Fire Engineer Ben Gilliam reflected on the horrific loss, especially the 343 firefighters who died. It was the largest loss of emergency responders’ lives in U.S. history. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey salvaged

LOCALS LOVE BURGERS A common element in Healdsburg restaurants’ locals menus is often the traditional hamburger, perhaps with a Wine Country touch as served at Appellation’s Folia Bar & Kitchen.
Midweek menus for Healdsburgers ● Locals night makes dining out close to home affordable Staff Report
We’ve all read about the downturn in the wine economy, with its dread forecasts and images of ripped-up vines. But people keep coming to Healdsburg on holidays and weekends, or whenever the latest “cool small town” poll comes out. In between times, though, people still live here, and they like to go out to eat every now and then. But it’s hard enough to find a weekend reservation in town, let alone parking. Some friends of ours wanted to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary at a downtown restaurant, an establishment they had often frequented. The only time slot available on a Sunday was at 5:30pm, in the Parklet outside. Not ideal for longtime and loyal locals. (They later found a table inside, but still …) Many swear they have better luck at one of the several restaurants that recog-
nize residents with a locals menu, or offer deals on those off-nights when readers of Bay Area Foodie blog don’t fill the tables. Technically, Monday night is not the weekend. Up at Folia Bar & Kitchen they’ve cooked up a month of Mondays to showcase the Greek cooking of chef Dino Moniodis. The $85 prix fixe doesn’t include the Greek wines available from the cellar, but it does offer time-honored favorites—like tirokafteri, spanakopita, lamb chops and rizogalo. Mondays through Oct. 12. Let’s move on to Tuesday. The Farmers Market can’t supply all needs, so check out the Tuesday Special at the Harmon House Rooftop (227 Healdsburg Ave., upstairs). Enjoy a fantastic 2-for-1 taco deal, perfect for sharing or satisfying a hearty appetite, especially with a sunset light show over town this time of year. Also Tuesday, Nov. 22, Little Saint will hold a special Cosmic Campari Party featuring Negroni tastings, bites and a DJ spinning all night. It may not be a regular weekly event, but at $20 a ticket it’s worth checking out. It’s also a bene-
fit for Slow Food Sonoma County North, an inspiration to Little Saint and vice versa. Keep an eye on littlesainthealdsburg. com for other midweek specials. Wednesday has long been a reliable date for locals. After all it’s not really the weekend, right? Which makes Fried Chicken night at Spoonbar—not known for its bar-food favorites—such a find. The $38 meal includes white-corn soup, a tomato-and-peach panzanella, buttermilk-brined fried chicken, mac and cheese, and blistered Shishito peppers. As
a weekly Wednesday, it’s a popular choice. More recently, Wednesday became the evening for a happy hour at Arandas, a restaurant that has since closed and morphed into Maréla. The new house isn’t throwing away a good thing, and now holds a patio party every Wednesday from 5-8pm with live music. It also launched a prix fixe menu for locals for $65, offered Wednesday through Sunday, which includes a glass of sparkling wine. Charlie Palmer took his preference for a locals night up to Appellation Healdsburg’s new Folia Bar & Kitchen, which opened late last year. Its special night is Wednesday, when the Sonoma County local community and visiting guests are invited for a rotating seasonal menu at Folia for just $55 for three courses. Thursday things begin to get crowded. Charlie Palmer’s Dry Creek Kitchen started a locals menu on Thursday many years ago, and it continues under chef Shane McAnelly. It’s called the Sonoma Neighbors Menu and includes a pretty robust three-course meal for only $55. There are several canapés to choose from, a main of porcini or rockfish (seasonally dependent), and a dessert. Needless to add, wines to accompany are available. Also Thursday: Dustin Valette’s downtown restaurant at The Matheson still hungers for local business. It submits its Local’s Menu as evidence: $58 for three courses, served beginning at 5pm from Sunday to Thursday (i.e., off-season in Healdsburg). The menu changes every two weeks, based on the in-season produce. Locals are also coaxed with happy hour drink specials at Roof 106 and the main restaurant downstairs almost every day. But happy hour is rightfully the subject of another column. If readers have a favorite happy hour, tell us in the Comments for this story online at healdsburgtribune.com.
FAST SHIFT A waiter moves quickly to keep up with the orders during Roof 106’s ‘Reverse Happy Hour,’ which takes place after dinner instead of before. It’s the sort of thing locals know about in Healdsburg.

I Nello Baiocchi
1
April 29, 1921 — August 12, 2026
05+ years … a life well lived! On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Nello Baiocchi passed peacefully and is now reunited with his wife of more than 62 years, Mabel (Ferrero) Baiocchi, who passed in 2006. Nello was a lifelong Sonoma County native as well as a first-generation American. His parents, Marie (Toschi) and Nello F. Baiocchi, both emigrated from Italy in the early 1900s. They literally built their home and farmed a 40-acre property in Geyserville, California. Nello outlived his three older sisters Beatrice Trusendi, Josephine DelSarto and Rose Vasconi. He is survived by many nieces and nephews: Shirley Quackenbush and family, Barbara Skrepetos and family, Randy DelSarto, Debbie DelSarto, Pat Simmons, Lynn Simmons, John Rudolph, Larry Vasconi, James Vasconi, Gina McCoy, Joe Pasquini, Anna deLaney, Lori Wood and Dolores Brannon. Working with his father on their ranch, Nello learned to grow grapes and
make their family wine. Farm life taught him he could fix almost anything and he became quite proficient at electrical work, property maintenance and management. Later he oversaw tours and hospitality at the legendary Italian Swiss Colony winery in the village of Asti. Nello loved being the host and volunteered many years of fundraising in Healdsburg for St. John’s Church and School using his family recipes for raviolis and cioppino. He was a life-time member of the Italian Catholic Federation and Knights of Columbus. To know Nello was to love him. He had a positive attitude about life and wanted everyone to always enjoy themselves. Always forward, “sempre avanti” was a constant refrain. Nello and his fun-loving ways will be missed by all that knew him. Arrivederci! A formal mass and memorial service will be held on September 18, 2026 at 2pm at St. John the Baptist Church, 208 Matheson St., Healdsburg followed by a reception at St. John the Baptist School, 217 Fitch St., Healdsburg at 3pm.

t is with a sad heart that I announce the passing of my mother, Mary Alice (St. Clair) Wollenbecker, mother, aunt, grandmother and greatgrandmother, who passed peacefully on August 22, 2026 at 89 years old in Sacramento, California. A third-generation Californian, Mary was born on February 24,1937 in San Francisco, California to blacksmith Percival (Pete) and nurse Clara (Allen) St. Clair, joining brother Allen and sister Carol. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Mary’s father was sure that San Francisco would be Japan’s next target, so moved the family to a prune farm (“the ranch”) on West Dry Creek Road in Healdsburg that had been in the Allen family since 1856. Mary loved spending her days on the ranch with her sister Carol, going to Dry Creek to swim with friends from school. Mary graduated from Healdsburg High school in 1956 and moved to the Bay Area where she worked in the plumbing business, rising to become the branch manager amidst a work force dominated by men. She married a local man, Frank Salsedo, and had a daughter, Lynette. They lived on Fitch Mountain until the couple divorced, when Mary moved to the Bay Area and married Nate Bennett. Mary cherished spending time in her garden with the flowers she loved, caring for many feral cats, and dancing and fishing with her beloved husband, Nate Bennett, until his passing Upon retirement Mary donated her time at the Pinol Library to fill her passion for reading books on history and mystery. She enjoyed the friendship of her new co-workers. Mary enjoyed spending time with her sister, Carol, and husband Bob Stratton in Santa Rosa, California, finding adventure with their three boys.
She was very proud of her nephews, Tim, a pharmacist and university professor; Brian, an auto mechanic and Coast Guard veteran; and Bobby, a fire captain. She remarried Fred Wollenbecker and enjoyed their home in Pinole. She looked forward to her visits from grandson Mario Reno and was so proud of him for joining the U.S. Marine Corps. As her health deteriorated, Mary moved in with her daughter and son-inlaw, whom she called Chief, in Cameron Park, California. She remained strongwilled while battling kidney disease, but found new passion for enjoying time with a new cat and dog, who never left her side. She was pleasantly taken aback by the unexpected care given her by Ramon Salsedo when she was so weak. In the car she would confirm “locked and loaded” and off to her doctor visit and to enjoy forbidden treats like chocolate cookies, and lots of laughs. She was preceded in death by her parents, by brother Allen St. Clair and sister Carol Stratton, and by nephew Brian Stratton. She is survived by daughter Lynette Holmes (Eric) of Cameron Park, nephews Tim Stratton (Suzanne Wasilczuk) of Duluth, Minnesota and Bob Stratton (Stacy) of Santa Rosa; niece Pia Stratton of Roseburg, Oregon; grandson Mario Reno (Charlotte) of Buckeye, Arizona; and great grandchildren Kailynn and Quinn Reno (Mario’s), and Garrett and Caleb Austin (Charlotte’s). Mary will be remembered for her keen wit, loving and generous heart and for her determination to live her life with strength and love of country. She said, “If I didn’t have something to complain about, then there is no reason to live,” so she must have left us being happy. See you in heaven. No services held due to her request.

The rugged SOAR boats, kayak in shape, were “designed for multi-day wilderness river expeditions,” he said. “They needed to be tough, rugged, reliable, and hold people and their gear. And, in the hands of people who know what they are doing, capable of handling some pretty big water.” SOAR was a success for Laba, though
in 2024 he sold the brand and name SOAR Inflatables to Trailhead River Sports in Missoula, Montana, which sells a wide variety of boards for outdoor recreational pursuits. Despite various interpretations of the meaning of the acronym, SOAR stands for “Somewhere On A River, which is always where I dream of being,” Laba said, as if

he knew from the outset what motivated him. “I really purposely chose a lifestyle business. I knew that I wouldn’t make a ton of money, but [I was] really going for the lifestyle. And quite honestly, I’d say I’ve been living the dream.” He and his wife, photographer Barbara Bourne, plan to now do a bit more travel, and have a stake in Colombia where they’ve lived for the past few winters. “Barb and I, we know we have lots of great options,” Laba said. “We’re just waiting to see how we come out with Russian River Adventures.” After a slow initial response from the outfitter business, interest in purchasing the company recently picked up. “I am talking to several people that appear very interested. A couple of people are now in what I’m going to call the ‘due-diligence’ stage. I mean I’m feeling pretty optimistic,” he added. Over the years Russian River Adventures spun off a couple of sidetrips, including a guided e-bike tour and a “Roads 2 River’ combo adventure. A foray into balloon tours never really took off. Its bread and butter remains the 9-mile self-paddle from “Larry’s Launch” at Memorial Beach to Wohler Bridge. But time is running out. The final reservation for the 9-mile float is Oct. 11, aside from a large charter that comes every year from Southern California. “They paddle out to Jenner,” Laba said, with a touch of envy in his eye. “I’ve spent decades helping people explore remarkable places and create lasting memories. It has truly been my pleasure and my honor.” Russian River Adventures can be reached at russianriveradventures.com.

EYES ON IT Healdsburg libero Elizabeth Aleman (3) times an incoming lob as Emma Azevedo (8) and Isabella Marguglio (14) give her room in the Middleton match on Sept. 1.
V-ball girls even the score ● Two 3-2 match wins source of pride, hope By Caleb Knudsen “It takes a certain amount of mental fortitude and discipline to play quality volleyball for two hours straight, and to lock in at the end where it all matters,” varsity volleyball coach Jonathan Nuttall told the Tribune this week. The Lady Greyhounds showcased that skill in their Sept. 1 meeting with Middletown, and on Sept. 3 against Credo. They marked two straight wins for the preseason Healdsburg volleyball
team, matching two straight wins from St. Helena and Santa Rosa late in August. “I think these are the first two set-five wins I’ve had with this program, which is really exciting,” coach Nuttall said after their wins last week against Middletown and Credo. That puts the team even for the year, 4-4, as it gets ready to face Rancho Cotate on Tuesday night, facing off against the illustriously named Violet Hackamack. Coach Nuttall said, “Hannah LevineSmith has been the lynchpin of our offense as expected, with 12 kills against Middletown and another 16 vs. Credo. Sophomores Chiara Mork and Bella Marguglio
are stepping up as well to support her, both with at least five kills in each match. Junior setter Hannah Jenkins also deserves a shoutout for her 31 and 27 assists in those two matches, respectively.” Later in the week Healdsburg hosts the Willits Wildcats, on Thursday at 6:30pm, then unknown foes in the Saints Varsity Tournament. Serious NCS Redwood competition does not begin until Sept. 22, against Piner. Nuttall reflected on the team’s outlook. “This is a team that wants to win, believes they can win and is willing to put in the work to prove it,” he said. “I think this is a very good sign for the rest of the season.”
REACH Sophomore Chiara Mork rises to the moment for a high return in play against Montgomery.

LIKE FATHER LIKE SON Mark Domenichelli, left, with his son Jack at last year’s senior game. Jack had already graduated, but showed up to toss the ball around with Dad one more time.
Double resignations stun Hounds fans ● Baseball, softball coaches both step down to follow kids’ careers By Caleb Knudsen Spring is still almost half a year away, but as of Sept. 7 a double opening in two of the most popular spring sports at Healdsburg High remains. Both varsity boys baseball coach and varsity girls softball coach are listed. It is unusual, unexpected and totally logical. Both men have over 20 years of experience in the coaching role, most of it in Healdsburg, more often than not in successful, if not record-breaking, years. Both men are in their 50s and both have offspring playing in college towns this coming season. Games their dads don’t want to miss. Mark Domenichelli, 53, has been a baseball coach for almost the entire century—starting in 2000, though he took a break from 2011 to 2020. His teams made it to the playoffs 16 out of 18 years, and he was named Coach of the Year four times
as well as receiving other honors. Softball coach Brian Osborn is in a similar position, coming off a successful run with the softball program. He is also athletic director at HHS, a role he will continue to fill, but he’s stepping down as coach after a career that almost matches that of his baseball counterpart. Both men will do so to watch their children, Izzy Osborn and Mike Domenichelli, go on to competitive ball in college. “It’s just one of those things where I just really, really want to see him play,” Domenichelli said. “I mean, he’s been hurt the last couple years. He’s finally healthy. So I figured you only come around once, and I don’t want to miss any of his games.” The two coaches aren’t in cahoots, but both have followed a similar path and reached a similar fork in the road. “Your priorities, you know, as you get older, they switch a little bit,” said Osborn, 52. “I put in my time. I’ve worked with hundreds of kids. Not that I feel like — More on page 12

Cool relic of a cool era ● The Flamingo’s sign is just a taste of the ambiance within By Pierre Ratte
The old nightclub with live music was retained and the food-and-beverage program underwent a major upgrade. The Lazeaway Club’s poolside dining is now run by executive chef Chris Ricketts and food & beverage manager Sam Levy. Ricketts brings Michelin-star experience from Lord Stanley and Manresa restaurants in San Francisco and Los Gatos, while Levy kicks up the cocktailand-event-services game leaning into his Meadowood and Fern Bar management and partner experiences. Check it out. Sit poolside. Try the seared salmon, coconut soup with exotic mushrooms. Robe up and take a meeting like a wannabe Hollywood mogul. FUN FACTS: Hugh Codding, of Coddingtown mall and Montgomery Village, developed the Flamingo resort. Built in 1957, it was designed by Chicago architect Homer Rissman. Rissman studied under Mies van der Rohe. He is credited with resort hotel designs that define Vegas properties. Rissman’s most known works are: the Hacienda in Vegas, the Flamingo in Santa Rosa and the Riviera in Palm Springs. Flamingos get their pink color from beta-carotene in both animal (shrimp) and plant (carrot-like) food. Their livers break down pigments which enter the bloodstream and new feathers, turning the birds from gray to pink. Carotenoid intensity determines pink or red. A flamingo group is called a flamboyance. The Flamingos were a doo-wop group flamboyance. Their 1959 song, “I Only Have Eyes for You,” was a sensation. Rolling Stone magazine rates it 158 on their list of “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” They were among the first group with synchronized and stylized choreography. Sha-bop, sha-bop. IYKYK.

Maybe you’ve seen it? The flamingo? The bird statue advertising the Flamingo hotel at Fourth and Farmer’s Lane? The City of Santa Rosa designated the sign a historic landmark in 1997. It’s a cool relic of a 1950s California aesthetic. Lots of locals know the sign, but have they stopped by to see the hotel underneath? After decades of decline the property was renovated. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2025, the 170-room resort hotel joined Hilton’s Tapestry Collection of boutique properties. The sign, there since 1957, can lead one to think two things: 1) this property is going to be a doozy—not in a good way, or 2) this property might be worth seeing. Thankfully, “2” is now correct. The property was run-down. It lacked seismic reinforcements. Owners turned rooms into low-rent apartments. However, a $20 million renovation upgraded all aspects of the property, except the sign, and restored a bougie pool-and-spa ambiance with postmodern aesthetics.

LOOK, IT’S A BIRD This colorful sign advertises the Flamingo Resort & Spa, designed in 1957 by the same architect, Homer Rissman, who designed such colorful Las Vegas landmarks as the Hacienda and the Riviera in Palm Springs.

I’ve exhausted all my knowledge on the game, or my ability to work with kids. You know, it’s just time.” The HUSD website listed both positions, but the application deadline was the end of Labor Day weekend. Pay is a stipend of about $5,200 for the season, which sounds like a lot. But as these two men know, it’s a big commitment, the commitment of a lifetime. “It works out to about 75 cents an hour,” Osborn said. “It’s all about accountability,” Domenichelli said. “Out of all the things I think when it comes to coaching and teaching, I just always wanted my players to be held accountable. Accountability is everything. I think if you don’t have that, you have nothing.”
