Silva’s MLS education underway Reds select All-American mid-fielder in SuperDraft

Luis Silva has made a pledge. Though the offensivelygifted mid-fielder has designs on a professional soccer career, he’s also just two courses shy of his college degree. “I’m going to finish school eventually,� the 23year-old from Los Angeles said after Toronto FC took him fourth overall Thursday in the MLS SuperDraft. “I promised my mom I would,� said the five-foot11, 163-pounder.

But with training camp less than two weeks away and expectations from TFC that he will get minutes on the first team as a rookie, Silva will need to talk to his professors at the University of California Santa Barbara about completing his Spanish major with an education minor online. As a senior last season, Silva had 17 goals and 10 assists in 24 games for UCSB, which lost in the third round of the NCAA playdowns. He became the
school’s first soccer player selected as a first-team AllAmerican. “I’m just ready for wherever the coach wants to play me,� Silva said from the draft in Kansas City. The Reds used their other pick, which was acquired in the deal that sent Dwayne De Rosario to the New York Red Bulls, to take Aaron Maund, a defender out of the University of Notre Dame, 12th overall. “Both players were on our list and we were very
