President Donald Trump nominated former National Labor Relations Board member R. Alexander Acosta to serve as U.S. secretary of labor, one day after Trump’s original choice withdrew. Acosta is dean of the Florida International University College of Law and is Trump’s first Hispanic nominee. Acosta has had a decades-long public service career, serving in three presidentially appointed and Senate-confirmed

positions, and is expected to face a smooth confirmation process. “Mr. Acosta’s nomination is off to a good start because he’s already been confirmed by the Senate three times,” said Sen. Lamar Alexander, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions that will be vetting the nomination. REUTERS

A suicide bomber attacked a crowded Sufi shrine in southern Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least 72 people and wounding dozens more in the deadliest of a wave of bombings across the South Asian nation this week. A spokesman for medical charity Edhi said the attacker appeared to have targeted the women’s wing of the shrine, and around 30 children ac-

companying their mothers were dead. Islamic State, the Middle East-based militant group which has a small but increasingly prominent presence in Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the attack, the group’s affiliated news agency AMAQ reported. Senior police officer Shabbir Sethar told Reuters from a local hospital that the death toll was likely to rise. REUTERS

Northeastern students make higher-ed history in Cuba Two undergrads are first from a U.S. college to be allowed to work in the communist nation. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

Caroline Bynum and Madeline Drake are having a spring semester unlike any other. The Northeastern University students are living and working in Cuba, immersing themselves in the culture as they become the first U.S. undergrads to take part in such a program in the island nation, the school said. Bynum and Drake, both 21, have been spending their days working for a scientific research organization, focusing on environmental protection while cataloging artifacts and tour-

ing the country. Since arriving in January, they have gotten to know their surroundings well, and often walk down the block to one of the churro stands, where they can get a cone of the sugary fried treats for 20 cents. “As someone who is

stood by Americans, as a result of the history between the two countries.” That torn relationship is on the mend following former President Barack Obama’s decision to lift some trade and travel restrictions in 2015. As Presidential Global Scholars, Bynum and

Drake are among the 200 Northeastern students each year who participate in an international cooperative education programs. Called co-ops, the program alternates a student’s academic experience with hands-on work, and is one of Northeast-

ern’s signature offerings, said Joani Lamachia, an international affairs co-op coordinator. Bynum, a third-year human services major, and Drake, a fourth-year international affairs major, have explored the island outside Havana. Most recently, the pair traveled to Sancti Spiritus, one of the oldest Cuban settlements as part of their work with the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation, a non-governmental organization. Núñez Jimenez was a noted Cuban anthropologist and revolutionary who was close to Fidel Castro. He is most famous for his yearlong expedition through the Amazon and Caribbean in the late 1980s. During that time, Núñez Jimenez collected hundreds of artifacts along the way that provide a window into the many cultures and people he encountered.

Bynum and Drake have been cataloging these for the foundation’s museum — photographing, numbering and describing each piece. “One of coolest artifacts is a canoe they actually took on the expedition,” which is on display in the museum, Bynum said. “There are necklaces

from the Quechua [indigenous South American] people, baskets, ceramics… They brought back rocks, crocodile heads, tortoise shells — you get a really interesting picture of what they saw on the expedition.” For more information about the program, visit metro.us

The categories include visiting family, journalistic activities, professional research and meetings, religious activities, humanitarian projects and educational activities, which is the way most Americans

are allowed into Cuba. “People-to-people” travel counts as educational because it fosters activities between the U.S. and Cuban people that create “meaningful interaction,” according to Insight Cuba, a travel website. Located about 100 miles away from Florida at its closest point, Cuba remains an elusive neighbor to most people in the United States. But that mystery is starting to fade as travel restrictions to the Caribbean island ease. U.S.-Cuban diplomatic relations were restored in 2015 with more than 147,000 American tourists estimated to have visited that year, according to Cuba’s Office of National Statistics. “Tourism” to Cuba remains officially prohibited, however. They had what they call a revolution that, for good or bad, still lasts to this day. If that’s not trying to change historical time, I don’t know what is.” Buscaglia has been bringing students to Cuba for more than 20 years. Study abroad programs have been allowed there for years, but with limitations, according to NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Former President George W. Bush tightened travel, with as few as 250 students from the U.S. permitted to study in Cuba in the 2007-2008 academic year.

Some Boston businesses close for #DayWithoutImmigrants Many immigrants stayed home Thursday and business across Boston, Cambridge and Somerville shuttered their doors in solidarity with the “Day Without Immigrants” movement. The nationwide protest aimed at highlighting the contributions of immigrants on daily life. Similar closures and protests were scheduled in New York City, Philadelphia and other cities across the country. The strike was a response to anti-immigration policies and proposals by President Donald Trump’s administration, including the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico and the travel

ban on people from seven predominantly Muslim nations. “Without us and without our contribution, this country is paralyzed,” flyers being circulated in advance of the protest said. A handful of restaurants in Boston and elsewhere like Anna’s Taqueria and Shojo stayed shuttered all day, while places like Cambridge Brewing Company pledged to support workers who chose to stay home, giving them a full day’s wages and making donations to immigrant advocacy groups. Nationwide ‘General Strike’ urges workers to walk off their jobs An activist coalition is mobilizing more than 100 protests on Feb. 17. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork

amanda.mikelberg@metro.us

Another day, another nationwide day of protest. On Friday, more than 100 coordinated demonstrations will take place, including several in New York City, calling on workers and activists to walk off their jobs. The “National General Strike” protests are planned in cities across the country under the banner of Strike4Democracy, a loose coalition of labor and activist groups intending to mobilize the American workforce to assert its power in politics. In New York, a rally

will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. in Washington Square Park. Anyone able to attend without losing their job is urged to take part. It will coincide with a few other events at different locations, including a meeting to discuss the legal ramifications of striking and another titled “Know Your Rights.” Similar events will take place across the country, including several in Boston and Philadelphia. The protests come one day after the nationwide “Day Without Immigrants,” which encouraged immigrants and others to stay home to show the impact they have on daily life in the U.S. On Feb. 2, many Yemeni bodega owners in New York City shuttered their stores for several hours to make the same point. While Friday’s pro-

test is largely an appeal to American workers to assert their rights, the previous two demonstrations were in direct opposition to President Donald Trump’s recent executive order to ban people from seven mostly Muslim nations from entering the U.S., and his desire to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. The organizer of the Washington Square Park demonstration, Andrew Thornbrooke, said the purpose of this “first wave” strike is to bring together and connect workers. That, he said, will organize an effective, ongoing movement to disrupt the economy. The overarching theme is to “push back against assaults on democratic principles,” he said. “A huge part of it is that people are realizing all the

new administration really understands is economic and financial power. And as workers, we have the power to disrupt the economic force that’s driving the administration.” Tens of thousands expressed interest in joining Friday’s general strike across the nation in some manner on Facebook pages. About 5,000 people RSVP’ed to the New York rally. Michelle Rodino-

Colocino, a communications professor at Penn State University and one of Strike4Democracy’s national organizers, told Metro, “We need to move the ball down the field. “We have a rich history of general strike in this country, but we want something more massive, maybe it will send a message or make a change,” she said. “We all have different reasons for wanting to

strike on Friday, and some are thinking beyond Donald Trump to the system that gave birth to Donald Trump, that let him be the winner of the election,” she said. “We need to make this a movement, not a moment.” The notion of Americans taking to the streets to influence the government is not new, said Meg Jacobs, professor of U.S. history at Columbia University.

You can’t even go see silly comedies these days without being reminded of real world headaches. In “Fist Fight,” Ice Cube plays an eternally pissed-off high school teacher who challenges a flustered colleague (Charlie Day) to an after-school fight. It’s wacky, it’s vulgar — and it can’t help but remind us that the American school system is going to be even worse shape once Betsy DeVos gets her hands on it. When we talk to the rapper/movie star, 47, we can’t help asking him to weigh in on what’s going on outside the multiplexes.

I get the feeling that comedies are going to be really necessary to get us through the next four to eight years. I hope so. We’re gonna need to remember who we are. A lot of things can roll downhill to make us forget who we are. We’ve got to fight against that with everything we’ve got. It’s important for our mental health to remember that not everything’s bleak. If you’re looking for it, you can find something wrong with anything. People can find something wrong with a birthday cake, you know? Sometimes it’s about smelling the roses, man. It’s not about planting new roses all the time. It’s about looking around, seeing what we’ve got and realizing it’s not that bad — or not as bad as we make it sound all the time.

Keeping it real Even a comedy like “Fist Fight” actually reflects real life problems. It’s ultimately about broken school systems, underpaid teachers, undereducated kids. It’s a crazy, wacky movie that’s politically incorrect in most parts, but it does have this undertone of reality. That’s what makes the movie hold together, so it’s not two hours of me chasing Campbell [played by Charlie Day] around the school. It’s grounded but crazy, too.

I’m a little disappointed — not in Obama, but in the people who were supposed to stand with him and fight

Strickland’s not just a bully. He really cares about education and is pissed kids don’t know basic history. I remember seeing guys like that in school. I’m pretty sure they’re gone now. Because you just can’t do the things you need to do sometimes to get respect as a teacher. I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t be breaking students’ laptops with bats, but those cellphones can damn sure get Babe Ruthed out of the damn classroom. [Laughs]

The protests seem to be working. Now we’ve all got a common enemy. We all know who Darth Vader is. [Laughs] Now we can form an alliance against that kind of direction. We have multiple Darth Vaders now. We have Steve Bannon, too.

Without a doubt. That’s the evil empire for real. The last eight years gave us a look at what an America that’s tolerant and progressive can look like. It was shocking to see how much of the country was against that.

with him that you didn’t hear from. The Congressional Black Caucus was kind of silent over these last eight years. He needed more people fighting for him and not just waiting for him to do it all.

Their paychecks are lousy. The kids don’t pay attention. And all of a sudden — maybe while Day is being dragged around on a rope attached to a horse that’s high on meth (long story) — you’re thinking about Betsy DeVos, our

of ancient China that inexplicably stars Matt Damon. Remember Tom Cruise’s name weirdly hovering over the words “The Last Samuraiâ€?? But it’s not another one of those. It’s a positive example of international teamwork. Hollywood caught on years ago that Chinese audiences were among the world’s biggest fans of their movies. It was only a matter of time before the two combined forces for a semiawkward mashup like “The Great Wall.â€? Damon looks either blandly badass or just plain lost as William, a globe-trotting bandit who ďŹ nds himself right by the Great Wall of China — just in time for it to be attacked, over and over, by a horde of green reptile things

Director: Gore Verbinski Stars: Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs Rating: R It certainly sounds great: Someone convinced a Hollywood studio (with some help from European ďŹ nanciers) to make a weirdo horror ďŹ lm that runs almost as long as “Goodfellas.â€? Dane DeHaan plays the ideal anti-hero: a cynical, ustered, Nicorette-gobbling Wall Street stooge named Lockhart. He’s been sent to retrieve his boss from a tony and truly creepy spa, tucked away in the Swiss Alps. The tenants — all old, all wealthy — have either been coaxed or drugged (or both) into a life of perpetual ease. Lockhart can’t help but think something’s afoot. “A Cure for Wellnessâ€? is in no hurry to give us an answer, but the protracted running time teems with icky distractions. Director Gore Verbinski — throwing o the shackles of the three “Pirates of the Caribbeanâ€? behemoths

incoming education secretary, and how she’s going to make this hot mess worse. This was never how “Fist Fightâ€? wanted to be seen. It’s not a political ďŹ lm, nor even a “movie of the moment.â€? It’s a distraction with a pinky toe in reality. And to its credit, it knows how to distract. Most of the jokes are stupid, puerile and gleefully so. Amidst the madness of a prank-ďŹ lled last

day of school, Day’s Mr. Campbell — in a rare chance to play the lone sane person, at least until he loses it — accidentally enrages Cube’s Mr. Strickland, a history teacher who prefers to do his lessons holding a baseball bat. Campbell’s attempts to stop the ďŹ ght aren’t always inspired, and the movie loses some gas en route to its admittedly nonanti-climax of a smackdown. But it’s always fast on its feet, and always has capable ringers, particularly Jillian Bell as a guidance counselor who openly lusts after certain students. Despite talk of teachers buying school supplies, “Fist Fightâ€? winds up passing its modest assignment: It takes your mind o everything — except for Betsy DeVos. from space. Luckily, William’s not the sole hero. He merely winds up helping out the mighty army’s top brass, including a fearsome commander (Jing Tian) who also happens to be a woman. Damon’s name may be on the marquee, but he’s not “The Great Wall’sâ€? true star. That would be director Zhang Yimou, the maker of gorgeous spectacles like “Heroâ€? and “House of Flying

Daggers.â€? He ďŹ lls the ďŹ lm with color-coded extras, digital eects that don’t look too digital and action that’s as kinetic as it is poetic. As a shotgun wedding between similar-but-very-dierent nations, “The Great Wallâ€? can be misshapen, but its best bits “feelâ€? more Chinese than Hollywood, delivering on the pitch of “Starship Troopers,â€? only in ancient China.â€? MP

he made with apparent glee — prowls the bowels of his sets like a kid in a decaying, haunted candy store. It’s a world of mysterious corridors and secret rooms, of jars housing strange creatures in urine-colored brine, of endless creaks and rusty old-timey medical devices. This is a movie to get lost in, not just sit and stare at, twiddling one’s thumbs, waiting impatiently for the big revelations and a pile of purple WTF insanities. It’s fun being jostled about by “A Cure for Wellness, just as it’s fun watching Verbinski

repeatedly and inventively deďŹ le a very game DeHaan. But it’s the kind of fun that ultimately rings hollow. Verbinski makes no bones about ripping o others. At one point he even steals — lock, stock and barrel — the most famous moment from “Marathon Man.â€? He does it well — if anything, his version is more visceral — but that tells you everything about Verbinski. Verbinski’s no mere peerless technician, but it will take something stranger than “A Cure for Wellnessâ€? to suggest he’s more than slightly more. TRADE WINDS There are two levels of NFL rumors these days: regular rumors and Schefter rumors. This week, ESPN’s lord of breaking football news, Adam Schefter, said the most interesting thing ever uttered on the “Mike and Mike” show. He believes the Patriots will, in fact, trade backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason. “There are different people in the Patriots organization that have different schools of thought here,” Schefter said. “I talked to one person a month ago who said he would be floored if they trade Garoppolo. But I just think there’s going to be too much interest, and somebody’s eventually going to offer enough to pry him loose. “There are enough teams out there with a need at

PHATTY VS. PHILLIES Say this for Chris Christie: He’s a loyal sports fan. So much so that he will take any and all opportunities to shred the fanbase of opposing teams even if that fan base makes up a good chunk of the people he “serves.” For the second time in a month, the New Jersey governor tore into Philly sports fans, this ttime Phillies picking on P fans specifically. specif “The Phillies suck,” Chris C said on o SNY.

“Let’s start with that. They’re from Philadelphia. They’re an awful team. They’re an angry,

bitter fan base and it’s not safe for civilized people to go to Citizens Bank Park if you want to root for the other team. Ya gotta believe what? Ya gotta believe we’re awful people!” There at the end, the large lawmaker was making reference to the Phillies putting the phrase, “Ya Gotta Believe” on a wall in their spring training facility. Of course, “Ya Gotta Believe” is a slogan most closely associated with the Mets.

The Boston Bruins have my full attention. There are multiple reasons for this. First and foremost, the NFL season is officially over. But also because the B’s fired their head coach last week and went on to win three straight games before the bye week, putting them back into a playoff spot. The Bruins have moved on from Claude Julien. For now, at least, they are committed to interim head coach Bruce Cassidy. We have no choice but to embrace that for the rest of this season, and perhaps beyond. Even though Julien

was immediately scooped up by the rival Montreal Canadiens, there’s something preventing me from completely moving on to a new leader behind the B’s bench. Perhaps we’re spoiled in this town with someone like Bill Belichick. But let’s be fair. What Julien did in nine-plus seasons in Boston is certainly worth remembering, rather than just taking it for granted and quickly moving on to the next guy as if the Bruins have had plenty of luck in the headcoaching department during the organization’s 92-year history. Because the truth is, they haven’t. Last season, Julien surpassed Art Ross to become the Bruins’ all-time winningest coach with his 388th victory. He finished his tenure in Boston with 419 wins and a Stanley Cup. Speaking of taking things for granted, before Julien led the B’s to a championship in 2011, the organization had gone through 17 different coaches since winning their last Stanley Cup in 1972. He took the Bruins to the playoffs in his first seven seasons, and also took them to a second Stanley Cup Final in 2013, only to lose to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Julien became the victim of an owner who didn’t want to miss out on the playoffs for a third-straight year. And while there’s no doubt the coaching change lit a fire under this somewhat-underachieving Bruins team, it also got me thinking about just how good Julien was for the organization. I wasn’t always a Julien guy. His defensiveminded style wasn’t always fun to watch. And from what I was told during the 2009-10 season when I covered the team as a reporter, he wasn’t always a joy to play for. So much so that when Julien was on the hot seat that season — publicly at least, the year before they won the Stanley Cup — some of his players refused to have his back when asked about the coach’s job security and potential changes if the team didn’t get its act together. I wasn’t a great reporter. I was a freelancer. I was the glorified assistant to my company’s beat writers for the four major pro teams in town. I knew my role. But I also knew that there were several Bruins players on that team that didn’t like playing for Julien. It was his third season in Boston. I wasn’t sold on him being the

right guy. And hearing about how some in the room felt about him, that didn’t make me any more confident that Julien would lead them to the promised land. One year later, I was wrong. The Bruins went on to win the Stanley Cup. Julien’s defensive style worked, regardless of how some players felt about it. I became a Julien guy. Suddenly, I cared less about offense. I became obsessed with the success of the penalty kill, rather than that of the power play. Julien stuck around for nine-plus seasons because of his obsession for that defensive style. Unfortunately, he was also fired for it. But only because his front office apparently stopped caring about the defensive talent it provided him with. Cue the Bill Parcells soundbite here. Well, Julien is now cooking dinner in Montreal. Before we begin to wish him the worst, I’d just like to take a few moments to acknowledge his best. And for the Bruins, that’s going to be awfully tough to match. Listen to “The Danny Picard Show at dannypicard.com, iTunes, and Google Play.
