Philly hopes to land 2016 DNC The Democratic National Committee announced over the weekend that Philadelphia and five other cities are finalist to host the 2016 convention. Mayor Michael Nutter made the city’s pitch official on Friday, citing the upcoming Catholic World Meeting of Families scheduled for fall 2015 and the Forbes Under-30 summit to be held this October. “Philadelphia’s thriving millennial population presents a great opportunity for the Democratic National Committee to galvanize a group that was critical to the successful election of President Obama in both 2008 and 2012,” Nutter’s letter states. The DNC said the other five options at present are New York City; Birmingham, Alabama; Phoenix, Arizona; and Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio.

Public displays of affection allowed Free to exchange vows. The 26th Pride Parade was the first ever to include a mass marriage ceremony. Flamboyant celebrations at the Philadelphia Pride Parade took on a serious, almost somber tone just after 1 p.m., as 13 couples stood on Market Street at Independence Square Park and exchanged the vows of marriage. “I love you. You are my closest friend. Will you let me share my life and all that I am with you?” the couples repeated as crowds cheered. The mass marriages at the Pride Parade were made possible by a federal judge’s May decision legalizing same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia Common Pleas Court judges Ann Butchart and Daniel Anders performed the weddings.

How we got here

“We’ve been together for over nine years; it’s almost like we’ve been married from the start. And finally, today, it’s legal; it’s finally on paper.”

“Just a few years ago, I didn’t think it was going to happen in my lifetime. ... When I heard, I think I cried for like 20 minutes, tears of joy.”

Ray Purnell Purnell, 30, left, and Tonee Robinson, 52, together for nine years

Melissa Bailey Jenna Imes, 28, left, and Bailey, 39, together for three years

“Beyond the very important legal protections, it’s changing relationships,” Anders said of the new law. “I had a couple that had been together 33 years. ... I asked them to hold hands during the exchanging of the vows and then seal their vows with

a kiss. Afterwards, as they were making toasts, they said ... that they had never shown a public display of affection, even holding hands in front of their family friends, let alone in public. What they said is that it felt right and it felt good.”

In June 2013, the Supreme Court ruled gay marriage legal — expanding marriage rights for the first time since a 1967 decision legalizing interracial marriage. In May, a Philadelphia federal judge ordered same-sex marriage legalized in Pennsylvania.

HOLD ON TO YOUR TOKENS When will SEPTA stop using tokens? LAMONT MCMANUS

SEPTA has a contract with Xerox to implement a new contactless fare instrument system. Pilot testing of the system will start at the end of this year. Once we determine that the pilot is a success, the public launch will begin. We will encourage our customers to move to the new fare instruments, and passengers using a SEPTA smartcard with stored value will travel on transit at the discounted token and transfer fare rates. After a significant percentage of our passengers have electronic fare cards in hand, we will start to reduce the availability and sale of tokens. We will continue to accept tokens until the new fare system is fully tested and installed on all surface vehicles and all the turnstiles and fare-dispensing machines have been replaced on the Broad Street and MarketFrankford Lines. Why did SEPTA remove the 60-foot articulated buses from most Route 14 weekend trips, which now have severely overcrowded 40-foot buses with many standees? NIKOLA SIZGORICH

SEPTA’s fleet of articulated buses is aging. In order to assure reliability on Route 14 weekend service, articulated vehicles are presently assigned to weekend trips with the highest ridership. The good news is that a new fleet of articulated buses should begin to arrive shortly to replace the older ones. Once they

“We will give our customers plenty of advanced notice regarding when they will no longer be able to use tokens to pay their fare.” arrive, we plan to restore Route 14 service to 100% articulated bus operation. The Broad Street line runs fine between Walnut and Olney, but between Olney and Fern Rock TC, the trains take a long time to reach Fern Rock. The Broad Street line operates Local, Express and Ridge Spur Service. During the weekdays the Local and Express trains originate out of Fern Rock Station every 3 minutes during peak hours. The scheduled running time for a local train from Walnut Locust to Fern Rock is 23 minutes which includes 4 minutes running time from Olney to Fern Rock. As northbound trains leave Olney Station they must all merge through a series of complex switches and eight “traffic” signals which govern the safe movement of trains back into Fern Rock Station in anticipation for their next southbound trip out of Fern Rock 3 minutes after their arrival. The train may stop momentarily based on the displayed signal as it leaves Olney while waiting for trains ahead to depart the station. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Bergdahl describes his harsh treatment, solitary confinement to officials Recovery. He is being treated at the U.S. Army hospital in Landstuhl, Germany. U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl suffered harsh treatment at the hands of his Taliban captors including long periods of solitary confinement, according to U.S. military officials who also said the soldier is struggling emotionally and has not yet called his parents. One U.S. military official told Reuters the 28-year-old is physically well enough to travel back to the United States for treatment. He is suffering from disorders affecting his skin and gums that could be expected after his five-year captivity,

the official said, confirming a report in The New York Times. The newspaper reported on Sunday that Bergdahl told medical officials in Germany the Taliban kept him in a metal cage in the dark for weeks after he tried to escape. The soldier is struggling with emotional issues and has not contacted his parents although he is free to do so at any time, the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

If the five Taliban inmates released from Guantanamo Bay prison in exchange for a captive American soldier rejoined the fight against the United States, they would do so at great risk, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday. “I’m not telling you they don’t have some ability at some point to go back and get involved,”

Women who take oral contraceptives desire different traits in an imaginary man than women not on the pill, according to a small study in Italy. Past research has found that when women view images of potential male partners during the most fertile time of their menstrual cycle, they tend to prefer the guys with more

masculine traits. Participants in this study rated their preference for male characteristics like athleticism, social class and shoulder width. The women who were not on the pill preferred men with more masculine characteristics, both physical and psychological, the study found.

A new way of evaluating tumors may soon help cancer patients identify the underlying genetic link to their disease — and the best possible treatment — all in a single test. Researchers are set to begin clinical trials using a more comprehensive testing method that looks for all of the known genes that may be active in a tumor. The new method could guide patients to the right drug earlier, potentially replacing current tests known as companion diagnostics that only look for

a specific biological trait or “biomarker.” The presence of a biomarker can predict whether a new class of drugs called targeted therapies will work on particular tumors. Results of these broader tests could even be used to quickly identify which patients might benefit from experimental drugs being tested in clinical trials. U.S. health officials see it as the future direction of cancer diagnostics. REUTERS Quoted

Three famous couples split

CULTURE Twitter feed

Ellen DeGeneres is bingewatching, Ricky Gervais has an idea for how to make old people safer, Conan O’Brien is coming out as vegan and Michael Ian Black has an epiphany about himself. @TheEllenShow: #OITNB Season 2 is released on Netflix! See y’all Monday. @rickygervais: I think we should Bubble Wrap old people. That way they could fall over as much as they like and not hurt themselves. @ConanOBrien: I’m a committed vegan, but only between meals. @michaelianblack: 85% of my personality is the fact that I eat mustard with my fries.

This weekend saw a lot of famous couples splitting up. Or at least, admitting that they split up a while ago and hoping they could make their announcements quietly over a beautiful weekend when hardly anybody was online. Most shocking was probably Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, who are divorcing after 18 years of marriage. Griffith filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, and also asked for child and spousal support. On the other side of the Atlantic, Scottish DJ Calvin Harris and singer Rita Ora also announced that they split a few months ago after dating for more than a year. (We admit, we had actually forgotten they were a couple.) Last but not least, sources say that Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart also split after two-and-a-half years together. Evidently, the split occurred before Smart was reportedly caught sexting with a transsexual bikini model. So technically he wasn’t cheating then, right? Smart was actually seen leaving JLo’s house in LA on a motorcycle this weekend, however, so we guess they must still be on friendly terms.

Will Ron Paul run for president again? How about Aaron Paul? Rihanna will stump for him if so! Even the mighty Rihanna can get starstruck. During the Spike Guys’ Choice Awards, RiRi met Aaron Paul from “Breaking Bad” and posted a photo of the two together on Twitter with the caption, “My life has been completed!!! #Pinkman4President.” We don’t quite know how to feel about that statement, but it sure could be interesting to see where a fictional meth head would lead the country.

TONY AWARDS

WTF, Hugh Jackman Tonys. Last year we got an entire circus, this year we got four minutes of kangaroo hops.

For the 68th annual Tony Awards, Hugh Jackman didn’t want to try to top Neil Patrick Harris’ four years of excellence — leading up to last year’s impressively acrobatic opening number in celebration of “Pippin. Instead, he and the creative team went for a low-key lead-in, featuring Jackman bouncing through the audience and backstage

against overtures from the various musicals that are up for awards this year (an obscure homage to Bobby Van’s sequence in 1953’s “Small Town Girl). Part of his bit included soft jokes about being Australian, which he somehow did not exhaust last time he hosted the Tonys in 2003. And then there was one joke that, upon hearing Jackman was hosting the awards show this year, NPH reached out with a congratulatory, “Wow, that’s fantastic! — or, at least, that’s what Jackman assumes he meant by “WTF. We also got a brief in-

We would never call Hugh Jackman dull, but his hosting didn’t quite reach Neil Patrick Harris heights.

terlude in which Jackman joined the “After Midnight ensemble in a quick tap number. (“Wolverine in tap shoes — you won’t see that at ComicCon, he quipped.) It’s disappointing that cutesy jokes and a few song-and-dance asides summed up the hosting gig this year. It’s classy, it’s just not what we’re used to — and it’s not a competition, so why fear falling short?

/ CBS

Probably because nothing says “go big or go home like the Tony Awards. At the very least, Jackman provided a neutral backdrop for the musical numbers woven throughout the show, including, “One Day More from “Les Miserables, “Friend Like Me from “Aladdin and Idina Menzel’s powerhouse solo of “Always Starting Over from “If/Then.

Awards starting out the night included Mark Rylance (“Twelfth Night) as Best Supporting Actor in a Play, followed by Lena Hall (“Hedwig) as the Best Featured Actress in a Musical and Robert L. Freedman (“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder) for Best Book. T. MICHELLE MURPHY @TMichelleMurphy

Encouraging Study on TYPE II DIABETES Shows the disease CAN BE REVERSED in as little as 1 WEEK!

“The Fault in Our Stars, a heart-wrenching love story about teens who meet in a cancer support group, won over moviegoers with a stellar $48.2 million at domestic and Canadian theaters over the weekend, beating Tom Cruise’s “Edge of Tomorrow, a sci-fi action film. “Edge of Tomorrow, which cost about $175 million, had to settle for third place with $29.1 million from Friday through Sunday, according to estimates from tracking firm Rentrak.

A free guide has just been made available to Type II Diabetics detailing an approach that appears to be more powerful than any drug know to modern science. The free diabetic guide explains in plain English how many diabetics have been able to reduce and eliminate their drugs and insulin injections, lose weight without exercise, reduce and eliminate the risk for diabetic complications, restore pancreatic function, and even become nondiabetic. The free guide also reveals rarely used diagnostic testing that is helping doctors understand potential causes of diabetes beyond weight gain, genetics and lack of exercise.

“Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie in Walt Disney Co.’s reimagining of the “Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, took in $33.5 million from Friday through Sunday to finish second. “The Fault in Our Stars, which was produced for just $12 million, is based on John Green’s best-selling novel about a girl who wheels around a portable oxygen tank as she fights metastatic cancer, and her boyfriend who lost a leg to the disease. Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, who played siblings in the dystopian thriller “Divergent, star as the couple. Fervent fans of the book turned the film into a social media phenomenon long before it hit theaters. “The Fault in Our Stars is the latest film to tap into a teen frenzy surrounding a best-selling book, following blockbusters like “The

Hunger Games and “Twilight. “Edge of Tomorrow, starring Cruise as a soldier reliving the same battle over and over, won raves, with an 89 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Distributor Warner Bros. said the movie performed well in overseas markets including China and Russia, earning $111 million globally. “It was the No. 1 movie worldwide this weekend, said Jeff Goldstein, executive vice president for domestic distribution at Warner Bros. In fourth place, Fox’s superhero sequel “X-Men: Days of Future Past earned $14.7 million. Seth MacFarlane comedy “A Million Ways to Die in the West, released by Comcast Corp’s Universal Pictures, landed in fifth with $7.2 million. REUTERS

Pretty alive and scheming, actually Interview. “Pretty Little Liars” star Sasha Pieterse reveals what’s ahead for her recently revived character. “Pretty Little Liars” may have endless mysteries to reveal each season, as the long-anonymous A pursues the four main characters, offering them blackmail threats. But one big mystery has finally been solved (spoiler alert!): We learn that former mean girl Alison DiLaurentis, whose apparent murder kicked off the action in the first season, has been alive the whole time. Sasha Pieterse, who plays Alison, discusses acting in the present tense for a change.

something cool’s going to happen.” Are you excited to not exist solely in flashback? I’m so excited. It’s been so much fun filming, for many reasons. I mean, flashbacks are great … but I get to wear current clothes.

“Pretty Little Liars” returns Tuesday, June 10 at 8 p.m. ABC FAMILY

Have you always known that Ali would rejoin the other girls? I always anticipated it. In the books, Alison had a twin and that’s who was alive, and when I found that they weren’t going to do the twin theory with Alison, I figured, “OK,

Do you ever get weird reactions from fans because of the character you play on the show? When I started the show and I started to see how big it was getting, I totally thought I was going to get hate mail and super weird reactions, because Alison was such a mean character. But I didn’t. It was actually completely the opposite and I thought that was so hilarious. Alison’s brother Jason is A, right? Can you confirm? I think I would get fired.

What’s in store for Alison this season? There’s a lot of characters who you haven’t seen, and if you have seen them, you haven’t seen them with Alison, and now you do. Alison comes back into Rosewood and causes a tornado to rip through this town and basically drives everyone mad. I think it’s really what happens with Alison, that no matter how much she’s changed, she goes back into town and … she’s basically wrecked people’s lives. People are still going to remember that. I think a lot of people were happy that she was gone, and hoped that she’d stay gone, and now it’s bringing up all kinds of baggage and turmoil.

Metal health. Deafheaven ďŹ gured out their sound and then were surprised to learn that the world liked it. Last year was nothing short of a banner year for Deafheaven. With the release of their second LP, “Sunbather,â€? the San Francisco band turned heads and caught ears of critics worldwide, garnering nearly unanimous acclaim as one of the year’s top albums. At their core, Deafheaven are a metal band. Metal elitists might charge that they aren’t black metal enough to be black metal, but the power of the band is how they transcended the genre and developed such a diverse following. “When we started the band we always had certain styles that we wanted to combine,â€? says vocalist George Clarke. “I understand black metal enough that I don’t consider us to be strictly that. Have we manipulated the genre in our own way to create

A lack of certainty

‘This is actually OK’ George Clarke remains humble about his band’s big breakthrough year. “When we wrote ‘Sunbather,’ we were so uncertain, he says. “We were like, ‘God, are we even good at what we’re doing? Do we even know what we’re doing?’ Now I guess there’s been a little bit of reinforcement. This is actually OK. Maybe we actually have a thing now.

our own thing in a certain light? Yeah. I think that upset people whose identity revolves around the genre. Deafheaven went beyond the black-and-white definition of metal by combining searing and shimmering wall-of-guitars and prog-rock progressions with Clarke’s impassioned screams that push catharsis to levels of exorcism. With epic song lengths and post-rock instrumental interludes, their music is cinematic and impressionistic, built in layers and ripe with subtlety. There is an inherent emotional depth to Clarke’s lyrics; the delivery and feeling remain the focal point,

while the words end up purposely obscured by the overwhelming textures and sheer decibel levels. “It’s a constant, highpitched, nasty bark, says Clarke. “And to anyone who enjoys the music and wants to look further, the lyrics are there. I think in order to understand the songs to the fullest extent, you do need to read the lyrics, because that’s where a lot of the emotional connection comes from. It just provides intensity to what’s going on musically. NOLAN GAWRON @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Put it in writing Write an uncensored letter to her that expresses every horrible and annoying thing she has ever done to you. MAKE ANGER WORK FOR YOU Ever since I had a baby a few months ago, my mother keeps sending me baby clothes that I don’t like, need or have space for. She constantly texts me with advice. She’s always been like this — doing things for me because it meets her needs, not mine. When I express my irritation, my mother says I’m unappreciative and that it’s unladylike to be angry, which really infuriates me and makes me feel a bit ashamed. What should I do?

When I was a 20-something living in San Francisco, my Harvard-educated feminist roommate introduced me to “her bible”: Dr. Harriet Lerner’s “The Dance of Anger.” Initially, I couldn’t understand why such a privileged, educated young woman could feel so strongly about a book that explores women’s anger. But as I began to read, many of Lerner’s points

“Anger is natural, hardwired into our brains to protect ourselves against perceived threats.” and examples resonated with me, only I had been socialized to hide my anger or call it something more acceptable: frustration. While it’s been ages since I read Lerner’s book, a few points have always stuck with me: 1) anger is not only a natural emotion; 2) it’s also a powerful signal worth heeding; 3) when channeled constructively, it can transform relationships. Let’s start with the first point: Anger is natural, hardwired into our brains to protect ourselves against perceived threats. Like other emotions, it triggers physiological and

biological reactions in our bodies, including changes in heart rate, blood pressure and adrenaline. So honor your anger — it’s there for a reason. This leads to my second point: Anger is a signal that our boundaries are being violated. Historically, anger rallied men to protect their land, livelihood and family against intruders (perhaps another reason why men are allowed to express anger, even celebrated for it, while “bossy” women are often called a word that rhymes with witches). In your case, your mother is the intruder into your personal space, undermining your sense of competency. Aside from being a doting grandmother, she clearly has a hard time determining where she ends and you begin. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Your anger is natural, but expressing it properly will help keep the peace. / PURESTOCK No insurance necessary

Because she doesn’t show respect for your own needs and boundaries, your anger is urging you to push back. This leads to my last point: How you push back can make a difference in how she responds and, more importantly, how you feel about yourself. Lashing out at her is only going to make things worse. Yet suppressing your anger isn’t the answer either, especially if this has been an ongoing dynamic. Here are my suggestions:

1

Show appreciation while setting clear boundaries. Set up a time (when you’re not in the middle of an argument) to meet. Begin by saying that you appreciate her desire to be helpful and involved with her grandchild. Then, explain that you need some room, free of her feedback, to develop your own parenting style and confidence as a new mother. You might appeal to her own sensibilities: “Mom, you must understand how fun it is to pick

out your children’s clothes. I, too, would like to do that for my own daughter.”

2

Accept that while you can assert your own needs, you can’t control how others respond. If your mother still refuses to respect your wishes, you may need to let go and approach her with a sense of humor. At least you’ve made your case. And if she sends you stuff you don’t need, donate it to charity. At least her goodwill won’t be completely wasted.

Bringing the magic of film into city schools Arts education. Since 2002, the Tribeca Film Institute has been nurturing the next generation of ďŹ lmmakers. Anyone who has been following the state of arts education in schools today knows that one thing is true: Funding for creative programs in schools is constantly under threat. Since 2002, the Tribeca Film Institute has been working with schools across the country to develop the next generation of young filmmakers. her work with the Institute. “To see kids come out of it and use ‘Tribeca’ as a noun or an adjective. ‌ They’ll say, ‘Oh, I did Tribeca,’ or ‘Are you Tribeca-ing this year.’ And it’s just — how did that happen?â€? she asked with a laugh.

Since the Institute began 12 years ago, Rosenthal has become a passionate advocate of encouraging creativity in schools. “Art programs have been slashed, that’s the first thing to go,â€? she notes. “And after that it’s sports programs. Every kid needs a break where you can express yourself in different ways.â€? The star producer also sees bigger and better things for the Institute. “I would like the program to be in every one of New York City’s public schools. I would love to see it grow nationally and internationally. ‌ So I think I have a bit of fundraising to do in that case,â€? she says. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi

Phils stock up farm in 2014 MLB draft MLB. LSU hurler Aaron Nola was the big ďŹ sh caught by the Phillies in last week’s draft.

2014 MLB Draft A look at the players the Phillies picked up in the 2014 MLB draft:

The MLB draft has wrapped, and suddenly there are 40 new Phillies’ names to learn. For the Phillies, the 2014 draft took on unusual significance as the major league team has continued to struggle and fans are starting to look toward the future. The draft has not been a successful place to find talent of late for the Phillies. The last first-round pick to contribute significantly was Cole Hamels, taken in 2002. But the Phillies picked higher this year (seventh) than they have since taking Gavin Floyd fourth overall in 2001. This draft heralded a change in organizational philosophy by the Phillies. In the past, the team’s inclination has been to select raw talent over major league readiness. That trend was reversed in the 2014 draft.

Which Sixers will be back in 2014? NBA. With a lot of draft picks, and little success, the makeup of next year’s team should look very dierent. The 76ers won 19 games last season. That’s not exactly a news flash. But it’s extremely relevant when figuring out how many players from that team will return for the 2014-15 season. The Sixers have two first-round draft picks — Nos. 3 and 10 — as well as five second-round selections. And more picks could be on the way. With general manager Sam Hinkie, anything is possible, which will make draft night very intriguing. Of the players remaining from last season, here’s a look at who’s likely to be back: ANDY JASNER @MetroPhilly

There’s a chance Young could be traded before next season. If that happens, another draft pick could be en route to Philadelphia.
