Serious fun. Angelina Jolie talks about the difficulties of playing light as the villain in the “Sleeping Beauty” riff “Maleficent.” A good baddie. In her new film, the actress turns a hissable monster into a (mostly) sympathetic wronged woman. Pint-size co-star. Her daughter also plays a role, but that doesn’t mean she’s ready for showbiz. District delays vote on meatless Monday meals No meat. The district tabled a vote Thursday to give students an alternative Monday meal next year. School lunches could go meatless on Mondays starting as early as this fall. The School District of Philadelphia could offer meat-free menu choices such as bean burritos, pasta with marinera sauce, and veggie calzones, according to the Humane

League, a national animal advocacy group. The School Reform Commission, which governs the school district, did not vote on this measure at Thursday’s meeting as scheduled. Beth Wallace-Smith, a nutritionist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said the key is to choose groupings that aren’t “loaded with salt and preservatives and they’re actually a pretty fresh product.” While it’s hard for families as well as the school district to buy and keep fresh veggies, Wallace-

Quoted

“Focusing on getting a variety of vegetables, even if they’re frozen, into a lot of these meals will make this change worthwhile.” Wallace-Smith

Smith advocated for frozen vegetables. “They’re less expensive, they still have really good nutritional content and quality,” she said. “And even though they

are considered a processed item. … it really preserves the vitamins and minerals in there.” Marquita Toland Holmes, a biology teacher at West Philadelphia Promise Academy, said as a teacher, she doesn’t think she would see a difference in student performance if the change went through. But it would show students alternatives. “And it might trickle down into their families,” Holmes said. “One day a week, while we may not see it in the building, but over time, we will maybe see it in the community.”

History Meatless Mondays is not a new concept in schools. •

The initiative started during World War I to preserve rations, and was revived in the early 2000s.

City Council passed a resolution in October advocating for the change.

‘Schools have already suffered enough’ Protesters hold signs and a jumbo pair of scissors at a “No More Cuts” rally in Thomas Paine Plaza on Thursday organized by over a dozen local groups calling for an end to cuts to Pennsylvania’s education and health care systems. City Hall took out the trash on Thursday — specifically a dumpster full of old toilets. “We’re doing a water efficiency upgrade in City Hall,” said Adam Agalloco, Mayor’s Office of Sustainability energy conservation manager. “It’s just a portion of a bigger energy conservation project that will bring in significant savings.” City Hall is getting 275 new low-flow toilets and urinals, Agalloco said. All told, 1,350 new waterefficient fixtures will be installed in City Hall, the Criminal Justice Center, the Municipal Services Building, and 1515 Arch St., he said. Old toilets used three to five gallons of water per flush; the new ones use 1.3 gallons per flush.

Old toilets outside City Hall SAM NEWHOUSE, METRO

Urinals that used one gallon per flush will be replaced with ones that use one pint. Faucets will get aerators to reduce consumption. The change is part of Mayor Michael Nutter’s 2009 “Greenworks Philadelphia” plan to make Philadelphia one of the greenest cities in the nation. It’s unclear how much money this will save the city. CCP student who pulled gun charged A Northeast Philadelphia student and legal gunowner will likely face jail time on charges of pulling out a handgun during a class, police said.

Ryan M. Fitch / PPD

Ryan M. Fitch, 23, has been charged with “weapon in school,” terroristic threats, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person after he was allegedly responsible for sparking an activeshooter scare Wednesday at Community College of

Philadelphia. Fitch reportedly had a permit to carry the handgun, but guns are prohibited from the CCP campus. Fitch is accused of threateningly showing a handgun to another student, with whom he was involved in a verbal

disagreement over a female student, just before noon on Wednesday. After, Fitch reportedly left the school and went to his home, where he was arrested. He bail was set at $250,000 and his next court date will be June. 13. SAM NEWHOUSE

Woman withdraws plea in murder of husband Tania Boozer, 39, was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday for thirddegree murder charges for having her boyfriend Abdullah Muhammed shoot her husband Jason Hayward to death. But instead, Boozer requested that Judge Sandy Byrd allow her to withdraw her plea, in part on the grounds that she is diagnosed with PTSD and is in therapy. “When I pled guilty it was because of fear, because of what happened to my co-defendant,” Boozer said, referring to Muhammad, who was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. “I wasn’t thinking. … I believe I’m innocent.” But Hayward’s family members don’t buy her change of heart. “To me, it’s just another one of her tactics to try to get leniency. … She’s a manipulator, she’s

Federal prosecutors in Pennsylvania announced the arrest on Thursday of 44 people with ties to gang members who wore T-shirts boasting of their drug-dealing prowess. According to prosecutors, the defendants are members or associates of a drug ring called “Bricks R Us” who are known for wearing T-shirts with the slogan “100 bricks at a time.” In drug wholesale parlance, a “brick” represents about 50 dime bags of heroin. (“Dime bags” are named for their $10 price tag.) The prosecution will disrupt a major heroin pipeline from Newark, New Jersey, into the Pittsburgh area, said David Hickton, the U.S. attorney for Pennsylvania’s western district. REUTERS

SATURDAY, MAY 31

FRED BEANS HISTORIC USED CAR SALE Doylestown, PA – Fred Beans, CEO and Founder of the Fred Beans Automotive Group located in Doylestown, PA, has announced a ONE DAY SALE on Saturday, May 31st at 9:00AM, where pre-owned vehicles will be sold for as low as $999. This sale is being held due to overwhelming public demand. Cars will be clearly marked, so come early for the best selection. This is a ONE DAY ONLY sale designed to get the local community driving again. Fred Beans’ pre-owned inventory levels need to be reduced to make room for shipments of new models arriving daily. As a result, all 8 Fred Beans Doylestown locations are selling these overstocked pre-owned vehicles to the public at drastic discounts in an attempt to clear excess inventory. In addition to this huge variety of pre-owned vehicles, the Fred Beans Family of Dealerships in Doylestown features new Ford, Lincoln, Mitsubishi, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC vehicles.

Fred Beans believes reviving the economy starts at home, and changing things locally will lead to changing things nationally. In addition to the Fred Beans Family of Dealerships’ extra inventory, additional vehicles have been acquired at incredible prices from various banks, repossession companies, auto auctions, credit unions, lease companies, and rental companies for this sale. The sale will make pre-owned vehicles available for as low as $999, prices not normally offered to the general public. According to Fred Beans, “We want to give our customers a reason to believe in the local economy again. Someone has to look out for their best interests.â€? Customers are encouraged to arrive and register by 8:15AM to inspect the entire inventory and ďŹ nd the car that is right for them. Every vehicle will be cleaned, detailed, and fully prepared for instant delivery. On the evening of May 30th after close of business, Mr. Beans and his team will mark the special sale price on each and every vehicle.

Because Fred Beans’ customers are feeling the credit crunch right now, the Fred Beans Automotive Group has given the dealerships’ ďŹ nancing managers the resources necessary to get most customers’ credit approved on the spot. The Fred Beans Family of Dealerships has $10,000,000 in lending power, the result of over 50 years of strong relationships with the area’s leading lenders. This means that customers with “less than perfectâ€? credit history can have their credit approved and drive a quality pre-owned car, truck, or SUV home by lunchtime on Saturday. Even if a customer’s credit report shows a bankruptcy, divorce, tax lien, slow payment history, missed payment, or repossession, or if a customer is a ďŹ rst time buyer, Fred Beans may get them approved. This special ONE DAY ONLY sale will be held at all 8 Fred Beans Doylestown locations this Saturday, May 31st, at 9:00AM. Pre-owned vehicles will be sold for as low as $999. Customers are encouraged to arrive and register by

8:15AM for the start of inspection. Incredible sale prices, starting as low as $999, will be posted no later than 8:00AM. All vehicles will be sold on a ďŹ rst come, ďŹ rst serve basis. The Fred Beans Family of Dealerships is expecting a high volume of customers for this sale, so be sure to reserve your spot early. Customers wishing to trade in a vehicle are asked to bring their title or payment book for immediate delivery. Fred Beans will even pay off your trade-in in full, no matter how much you still owe on it. Most of these surplus pre-owned vehicles will get sent directly to auto auctions for liquidation. So, if anyone has been thinking about purchasing a good, clean, dependable pre-owned car, truck, van or sport utility vehicle, do not miss this special ONE DAY ONLY sale. Courtesy transportation available from all local airports, train stations and bus depots. Calif. gunman’s parents describe ‘hell on earth’ Grief. “They are mourning the victims more than they are mourning their son,” said a friend of the Rodger family. The parents of Elliot Rodger, the gunman who killed six college students in a rampage in Southern California, are suffering “hell on earth” knowing their son caused such a tragedy, they said in a statement on Thursday. Rodger’s family members are mourning the victims of Friday’s mass shooting more than they are mourning their son, said family friend and spokesman Simon Astaire reading the statement on NBC’s “Today” show. “We are crying in pain for the victims and their families. they said in the statement. Astaire added that the couple, who are divorced, have “diminished” since their son’s killing spree. “They have gone down in size. They’re virtually unrecognizable,” he said. The parents have not read their son’s manifesto, in which he laid out his plans to exact revenge for being rejected by women, he said. Rodger emailed his deadly plans to several people before he drove through the streets of Isla Vista and gunned people down. Chin Rodger received a telephone call from her son’s therapist about the manifesto on Friday night, and the two parents raced separately to Isla Vista, Astaire has said. The mother heard radio reports about the shootings as she drove, he said. REUTERS

Bill payments

Satellite TV operator Dish Network to accept bitcoins Dish Network Corp. said subscribers will soon be able to pay their bills using bitcoin, the online virtual currency that’s drawn scrutiny from regulators. The satellite-TV company will begin accepting bitcoin payments in the third quarter, according to a statement Thursday. Dish says it’s the largest company to accept bitcoin as well as the ďŹ rst pay-tv provider to do so. Bitcoin was designed in 2008 to move money across the Internet, and has since been adopted by companies such as

online retailer Overstock. com Inc. and department store Lord & Taylor to sell their goods. Internet merchants are adding bitcoin services as governments examine how to regulate the virtual currency, which has no central issuing authority and uses a public ledger to log every transaction. Dish, based in Englewood, Colorado, said it will use Coinbase as the payment processor to exchange bitcoin payments to U.S. dollars at the moment of the transaction. BLOOMBERG

A TALK WITH MY DOG When my dog and my wife have a disagreement, I know two things: I had better not take a side, and it’s going to be hilarious. Nola (the dog) is a 10-yearold Sheltie who pretty much knows the rules about carpets, begging and ordering too many movies on Pay Per View. Linda (the wife) is, well, older than the dog, and she knows which rules we really mean and which ones can slide. But occasionally, a circumstance arises which requires discussion. This week, it was a rabbit in the back yard. Linda and Nola stood at the door looking out. Nola: Hey, there’s a rabbit. Let me at him! Linda: No. You can chase squirrels. But we don’t chase rabbits. Nola: Why not? Linda: We like rabbits. Nola: What about chipmunks? Linda: You can chase those, too.

Quoted

“People constantly make a great fuss about ethics, right up until their principles collide with their politics. Nola: So we don’t like chipmunks? Linda: We like them fine. They’re just so fast you’ll never catch one. Nola: How about the neighbor’s cats? Linda: Fair game. I understand the dog’s confusion, especially after this past week here in D.C. This is a city where people constantly make a great fuss about ethics, right up until their principles collide with their politics. In principle everyone wants to chase down better schools; less crime; good jobs; affordable housing; and freedom of speech, religion and the press. Those

are the squirrels. Yet political alliances can run counter to all those good intentions: Donors, activists, backroom deals and nod-anda-wink promises of future employment can turn any issue into an untouchable rabbit. In short, every time some voters see gun violence, sexual assaults and bad treatment of veterans and want lawmakers to pursue those issues, other voters say “Not so fast. You might hurt my friends. “It’s very confusing, I said to the dog the other night. “How will this town ever sort this out and simply do the good work that needs doing? “Well, she said, “I scratch my head with my back foot. “What? That doesn’t make any sense, I replied. She raised her newspaper and went back to reading. “Exactly.

The birth rate among U.S. teens and young women dropped to record lows last year, while the rate

among older women hit highs not seen in a half century, according to government statistics. The general fertility rate overall in the United

Drink. Sippable sunscreen could be answer to evening out your tan The days of having sun cream sloppily smeared onto your skin could be over with the arrival of the first drinkable sun protection. Osmosis Skincare claim their product called Harmonized H20 UV — available in “tanning” and “non-tanning” varieties that retail for $30 for a 100ml bottle — provides defense comparable to SPF 30. Users are told to ingest a small dose of the water one hour prior to sun exposure, with the process repeated every four hours. Dr. Ben Johnson professes that the formula’s liquid molecules vibrate on the skin to cancel out 97 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Johnson tells Metro why his elixir has a bright future. This product has received a lot of criticism by skincare experts. Why do you think they’re wrong? There are a lot of naysayers. The common misconception is that

people think we’re using radio waves. We’re not because radio waves go right through water. What we’re actually doing is colliding radio waves in the presence of water and that creates what’s called a scalar wave (purported to be a form of electromagnetic wave). Using drinkable sunscreen might have helped him avoid that sunburn. / METRO WORLD NEWS Limitations

The World Cup in Brazil is on its way. Will this product save the soccer players the hassle of having to slather on traditional sun lotion? It still has some limitations. If you exercise it burns off, but it does provide complete bodily protection: it protects your eyes and scalp — it’s a full-body effect.

Besides being unsightly and uncomfortable, varicose veins can be a warning sign of a condition called Venous Insufficiency that claims over half a million lives each year.

Have you tried the product yourself? Yes. About three years ago I started testing it and suffered a few sunburns in the process. After tweaking the formula, we tested about 50 people to see if it was consistently working, and basically it was. Is this for people who hate sunscreen? Right. It’s [sunscreen] actually quite irritating. And the reason that I was looking for an alternative is because the waterproof chemical sunscreens on the market today are the ones that are bad for you.

Porn may mess with your head Men who report watching a lot of pornography tend to have less volume and activity in regions of the brain linked to rewards and motivation, says a new German study. Quoted

“We found that the volume of the so-called striatum … was smaller the more pornography consumption the participants reported.” Simone Kühn

The results, published in JAMA Psychiatry, provide the first evidence for a link between porn consumption and reductions in brain size and brain activity in response to sexual stimuli, said Simone Kühn, the study’s lead author from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, in an email. For the study, she and her colleague Jurgen Gallinat from Charite University recruited 64 healthy men between the ages of 21 and 45 years and asked them questions about their porn-watching habits. They also took images of their brains to measure volume and to see how their brains reacted to pornographic pictures. REUTERS

Creeping beauty Kicking back. Angelina Jolie enjoyed not trying to be an artsy type for the fantasy “Maleficent.”

CULTURE

For Angelina Jolie, taking on the title role in “Maleficent,” which tells the story of “Sleeping Beauty” from the villain’s perspective, might have seemed like a no-brainer. But Jolie herself had her doubts. “I was a bit nervous to take her on. I don’t have a big theater voice. I don’t do things that are kind of comedic. This is such a crazy idea. I’m a fairy? ‘How was your day, honey?’ ‘I was a fairy,’” Jo-

Voice work

The other Maleficent Celebrities voicing animated characters is a mostly modern phenomenon, meaning the name of the woman who played the villain in 1959’s “Sleeping Beauty” — Eleanor Audley — probably doesn’t mean anything to you. But her voice might. She also did the vocal work for the evil stepmother in Disney’s “Cinderella.” In person, she played Eddie Albert’s mom on “Green Acres,” despite being only five months his senior.

lie remembers telling her partner, Brad Pitt. “I was so challenged by it. For me as an actress to do something where I’m not taking myself so seriously or doing it for myself or doing it for art — just to remember what it is to play and entertain and try something bold.” But once she had the horns and the augmented cheekbones and nose in place, she just went with it. “If you’re going to do it, you can’t just kind of do it. You have to go fully into it and enjoy it,” she says. “The original was done so well, and her voice was so great. If anything, I was worried I’d fail [in comparison to] the original.

I practiced a lot with my children. When I got them laughing, I figured I was onto something — well, they laughed, they cried.” Speaking of making kids laugh and cry, Jolie isn’t concerned that some parents might find the darker elements of “Maleficent” tough for kids to take. “I think what children can handle and what they’re interested in is much deeper than what people assume,” she says. “With a film like this, people ask, ‘Is it too dark for children?’ It’s not. They want to understand things that frighten them. They want to see dark things that happen and how to rise above them. They don’t want to be hidden from all things, everything sweetened.”

they decide to be actors — I would just ask that that’s not the center of their lives,” she says. “It’s an aspect, but I hope they do many other things with their lives and are involved with many other things because I don’t think it’s a healthy focus as a center of your life.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Michael C. It’s no ‘Blazing Saddles’ Neo-noir. Hall is in over his

head in ‘Cold in July’

Spoof. Seth MacFarlane’s latest is good, but it’s not clear if he’s ever seen a Western.

Making a Western — or even just spoofing one — in this day and age is a little insane. The genre is dead, gunned down by “The Lone Ranger.” Technically speaking, Seth MacFarlane’s “A Million Ways to Die in the West” is pure hubris, the result of cashing in “Ted” bucks to make something so anti-chic that it has a certain dignity. MacFarlane plays, not merely voices, Albert, a smart-ass sheep farmer. The story has hottie gunslinger (Charlize Theron) helping Albert train for a gunfight with the dandy (Neil Patrick Harris) who absconded with his beloved (Amanda Seyfried). But it’s really a series of sketches and gags about the Old West — not West-

ern movies, per se. In fact, it’s not clear if MacFarlane has ever even seen a Western. The only Western he seems to have seen is “Back to the Future Part III,” the only film that gets a direct homage at all. For someone who loves — annoyingly relies on, really — making endless references to things he watched as a kid, it’s strange to see MacFarlane avoiding homages so stu-

diously. Then again, this frees him up to indulge in what is his actual gift: unfettered loopiness. In the end, it’s not entirely clear why MacFarlane made “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” other than to give him a chance to make out with hot actresses.

Does a thriller gain or lose credibility if it strains logic but carries heavy authority? In “Cold in July,” Michael C. Hall plays a disheveled every-Texan who accidentally guns down an intruder in the middle of the night. The victim’s creepy father (Sam Shepard) has just been released from prison, and doesn’t accept apologies easily. Things quickly escalate into “Cape Fear” territory, and what started like “A History of Violence” in dirtier clothes takes a lot of turns into differ-

ent genres. It’s the kind of shape-shifter where the primary pleasure is in being jerked around, thinking you were getting one movie only to wind up watching another. But this is also highly suspect — a sign that filmmaker Jim Mickle might be distracting us from something (say, a logicstraining shady underworld) with crazy plotting. But Mickle’s tone — heavy, with an ’80s-era synth score — is bewitching enough to carry viewers over the drawbacks. MATT PRIGGE

If you can call it a comeback ‘Reality’. Legendary director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s first film in 23 years is oddly pleasant, if only to a point. Alejandro Jodorowsky invented the midnight movie with 1970’s “El Topo,” but his timing has usually been off. Fate has it that his first film in 23 years arrives just as his work is back in vogue, being referenced by Kanye and St. Vincent, as well as in the recent doc “Jodorowsky’s Dune.” “The Dance of Reality” is not, however, a primer.

The best entryway for Jodorowsky is to dive right into the phantasmagoric, bloody, colorful and fleshy excesses of “El Topo” and (better yet) “The Holy Mountain.” “Dance of Reality” isn’t nearly so purple. This is a tale of childhood, and it’s almost comforting that even Alejandro Jodorowsky’s youth was fairly commonplace. Young Alejandro (Jeremias Herskovits) is just another kid with a tyrannical, macho father. The details are a little off, though: His mother (Pamela Flores) sings all of her lines in an operatic warble. His dad praises Stalin, but winds up bouncing around between various violent factions.

Alejandro Jodorowsky comforts his younger self (played by Jeremias Herskovits) in “The Dance of Reality.” LE SOLEIL FILMS, CHILE, CAMERA ONE, FRANCE 2013, PATHE, ABKCO LA DANZA LLC

Some of this is more quirky than inspired. It doesn’t have the mad energy of previous Jodorowskys, but rather a pleasant memory piece vibe. But it’s better this than the now 85-year-old artist trying to actually recapture his groove and failing depressingly. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Fairy tale. Angelina Jolie’s MaleďŹ cent is really not that villainous in this “Sleeping Beautyâ€? retelling.

6900 Frankford Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19135

215-613-5311 DVD

The culture right now loves villains as protagonists — or at least just as flawed as most humans. The “Breaking Bad craze has wrought “Maleficent, which retells “Sleeping Beauty from the point of view of its horned, black-robed baddie. A motiveless, hissable monster in the 1959 Disney classic, she’s now sympathetic Angelina Jolie, who’s rebuked and betrayed by old flame Stefan (Sharlto Copley). Thus wronged, she heaps a nasty curse upon Stefan’s daughter, Aurora (Elle Fanning, eventually). But Maleficent is no Walter White. Dramatically, “Maleficent is thin stuff and offers little of the set pieces one expects from summer movie fare. It’s a straight-up fairy tale (but not a fractured one, such as the “Wizard of Oz redux “Wicked). The real fireworks happen in the character development. The

anger between Maleficent and Stefan wreaks one hot mess, and no one is wholly bad or good (though some, like Fanning’s regrettably dull and underused Aurora, are wholly decent). If anything, “Maleficent is too empathetic toward its title character. But it’s worthwhile for how it acknowledges that characters — even those tagged with having, as “The Simpsons once put it, “the evil

And she’s oddly relatable: someone whose heart has been broken, acting out of instinct more than sense. Jolie plays her as an all-too-human character — hurt, angry, vulnerable. But she’s at her best when she’s sneering, glowering and

••••• strutting. It’s what she was put on Earth to do. Like Eva Green, she’d have made a great silent movie actress, being at her most comfortable when she’s striking poses. Get these two a retro franchise where they play dastardly villains who never speak and only fire out hammy glances. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

It concerns the way trauma lingers, resting in the undercurrents of society and persisting no matter how much people try to ignore it — or confront it. The characters in “Ida”

Pawel Pawlikowski (“My Summer of Love”) likes to frame his shots with his characters placed in unusual positions that are symbolic of the detachment they struggle to maintain — understandably, as they’re dealing with humanity at its worst.

do both. It’s 1960 in Poland, and a young nun (Agata Trzebuchowska) joins up with Wanda (Agata Kulesza), a boozing aunt she has never met to find the grave of her Jewish parents who were murdered by Nazis. Along the way the sheltered Ida is exposed to vices she has always avoided: sex, alcohol, cigarettes and John Coltrane. But not so fast: This isn’t a heartwarming movie about self-discovery. The film straddles the perspectives of miserable Wanda and remote Ida, who each have very different ways of keeping people at arm’s length. “Ida” is a clipped and strident film told in a highly stylized manner. Rising West Philly rapper Chill Moody is on the bill for the second time at Saturday’s The Roots Picnic. Last year he rocked the crowd — a crowd that included his parents. “My favorite moment was when I was performing for 3,000 in the tent, and I’m looking out at a sea of people and my mom is standing front row, center, right in front of all these people,â€? Moody says. “It was the biggest crowd I had to that point. My dad was two people behind her.â€? Moody’s urgent tenor frames his hard-knock tales of stepping up and stepping out on the streets of Philly. “I’m not a track rapper; I’m not into a heavy electronic sense. I’m as close to boom box — the essence of hip-hop — as there is but still giving it that new age feel,â€? he says. Moody’s Roots Picnic coda should be a hit as well. Other acts to look out for this year include Snoop Dogg, who will be backed by The Roots; Philly atmospheric rockers The War on Drugs, flying in from a show in Spain to make the Picnic; space chanteuse and Covergirl model Janelle Monae; Mr. Trap Lord himself, A$AP Ferg; hip-hop legend Biz Markie on a DJ set; and Action Bronson (aka Rick Ross if Ross had a red beard and a sense of humor). As for the world-famous Roots, they’ve just dropped the new album “And Then You Shoot Your Cousin.â€?

Chill Moody plays The Roots Picnic, Saturday at Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing. Get tickets at RootsPicnic.com. And yes, Moody is his real last name. / GETTY IMAGES

Moody has two new songs as well, “Godzilla, with Drake collaborator Mike Zombie, and “Concrete Jungle, featuring a hook from Grammy-nominated singer and “The Wire star Mack Wilds. He says the two block-rocking tracks should perk up your summer. “It’s high energy, something that people can wake up in the morning and play or go to the gym and play, says Moody. “Something to get your day started and your juices flowing. Martha Stewart Recipe. BlackberryOregano Pie

Ingredients Crust: •

4 cups plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

2 teaspoons coarse salt

3 sticks cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Active Time: 45 mins. Total Time: 10 hrs. Serves: 8

1

Pulse flour and salt in a food processor to combine. Add butter; pulse until mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some larger pieces remaining. Add ice water; pulse until dough just starts to come together. Divide dough into thirds, pat into disks, and wrap each in plastic; refrigerate at least one hour or overnight.

¾ cup ice water

Filling: •

7 cups blackberries (about 2 pounds)

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

¾ cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh oregano

¼ cup cornstarch

Pinch of coarse salt

1 large egg, lightly beaten

Let dough stand at room temperature until pliable. Roll out one disk on a lightly floured surface to an 11-inch round, about 1/4 inch thick. Fit into a 9-inch pie plate. Trim overhang to just beyond rim of pie plate; tuck under to create a neat edge all around. Refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes.

Coarse sanding sugar, for sprinkling

Impress guests with this blackberry-oregano pie. / PROVIDED

Meanwhile, roll out remaining two disks of dough to just under 1/4 inch thick; freeze on two baking sheets until firm, about 30 minutes. Using a

1-inch fluted cookie cutter, cut out as many rounds as possible from sheets of dough (rerolling and cutting out scraps once). Return cutouts to freezer.

4

Toss blackberries with lemon juice, granulated sugar, oregano, cornstarch and salt in a bowl. Transfer to pie crust. Brush edge of pie crust with beaten egg and arrange overlapping rounds of dough on top of edge. Continue overlapping rounds to cover entire top. Freeze one hour.

5

Preheat oven to 400 degrees with a rack in the lower third and a baking sheet on rack below. Brush entire top of pie with egg wash and sprinkle with sanding sugar. Bake 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 degrees and continue to bake until juices are bubbling near center (if browning too quickly, tent top or edge with foil), about one hour. Let cool completely, at least six hours or overnight. Serve with whipped cream.

Reading Rainbow is returning!

THE WORD Christina Paciolla takes on the world of gossip. CHRISTINA PACIOLLA @cpaciolla christina.paciolla@metro.us

Whether you grew up with “Reading Rainbow” or you just know Jimmy Fallon’s Doors-inspired riff on the theme song, you’ll be psyched to learn that LeVar Burton, original host of the popular PBS children’s book series, is bringing it back. In under a day, a Kickstarter campaign raised more than $2 million to create

both a Web series and school reading program. Burton celebrated by doing a Reddit AMA, where most of the comments were heartfelt thanks.

Being attacked is the Pitts

Pitt is pictured pre-attack. GETTY IMAGES

The red carpet’s least favorite Ukrainian strikes again. Just two weeks after sticking his head under America Ferrera’s dress in Cannes, celebrity reporter Vitalii Sediuk crashed the “Maleficent” red carpet at El Capitan theater in Hollywood and allegedly attacked Brad Pitt while he was signing autographs. Was Pitt punched? Was he smacked? Several reports differ; some are even saying that eyewitnesses saw Pitt hit the attacker back. Either way, we’re hearing Pitt wasn’t too fazed. He just replaced his infamous dark sunglasses and kept signing autographs for fans alongside partner Angelina Jolie. Sediuk was picked up by LAPD and charged with battery. Guess his efforts to revive “Fight Club” aren’t going to happen!

Even in 2014, there are still social barriers to be broken. For the first time in its history, TIME Magazine is featuring a transgender person on its cover. Laverne Cox, one of the stars of the popular Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black,” graces the cover on the edition that is on newsstands now. The cover story with Cox, called “The Transgender Tipping Point,” has the transgender actress talking about respect and violence numbers among transgender people. Cox tweeted on Thursday that the cover story was a “lovely bday present.”

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Don’t be a rogue rider

Gun, mental issues related

I never ride against traffic; you can’t see the reverse traffic signs and lights if you’re behind them. It’s extremely dangerous when you have cars and other cyclists coming toward you. You are putting other cyclists in danger. You won’t be able to ride fast and react in time if you’re pinned between oncoming traffic and parked cars. Some people like to be rogue amateur riders, but you’’ll soon lose some organs and limbs or end up dead. It’s like having projectiles coming toward you. There are plenty of professional cycling websites that forbid riding against traffic. Do your research, don’t listen to a rogue cyclist.

Re: ‘Not a gun law issue’ (Metro, May 29) Could you cite a real-world example of violence against women being “belittled”? If any violence is “seen as a joke,” it’s violence against men, who make up the majority of victims except those of rape. Yes, many people with mental health issues don’t murder, but why does that preclude mental illness causing Elliot Rodger’s rampage? He refused to take recommended schizophrenia drugs. That should have prevented him from buying guns. BEN CAMPBELL, VIA EMAIL

Foles is solid in camp

Kelly says Foles is getting better Pro Bowler Nick Foles had a breakout year in 2014, and Eagles coach Chip Kelly thinks he can do it again. “I think the great thing about Nick and what you love about him is he knows he’s never going to arrive. … He’s continuing to improve on the little things. It’s the technical things, the deliberate things we are working on. You can see he has a command of what we’re doing.”

Eagles’ Maclin is ready to be the man NFL. The Eagles began their OTAs Thursday, with Jeremy Maclin participating at full strength. It’s finally Jeremy Maclin’s turn to be the man. As the Eagles assembled for the first time as the 2014 squad, the spotlight shifted away from the fascinating and sometimes confusing offseason, to Nick Foles’ new No. 1 target. And as Maclin prepares to carry the torch, he says he is healthy and ready to go. “Since day one when we reported back I’ve been out there with the team,” Maclin said. “I think throughout the rehab process my ability to get better

and progress has improved each and every day. That builds confidence and once you have confidence it’s just about putting in the work.” Maclin will be putting the time in alongside some familiar faces, like Zach Ertz and Riley Cooper — and some new faces — like Darren Sproles and secondround pick Jordan Matthews. “I don’t think, as far as what we’re doing on offense, it’s not changing one bit,” Maclin said of the Eagles’ scheme with the ball. “We added some pieces and I’m looking forward to seeing this offense take the step to the next level.” The Missouri product has scored 26 touchdowns with the Eagles, netting seven of them in 2012 before sitting out all of 2013 with a torn ACL during

camp and had to watch the Birds win their division from the sidelines. “It was tough,” he said. “Obviously with the new era beginning here in Philadelphia and me personally with the contract situation I had, it was tough. But I was happy to see guys go out there and make plays.” Maclin, with Foles at the helm, could post careerbest marks in Chip Kelly’s offense. But the modest wideout says that the success of the Eagles far supersedes his lines in the stat book, and his jockeying for a new contract when his one-year deal expires. “I think, to have the best year of my career, it would be to help this team win and get further than we did last year,” Maclin said. “If we can get to where I think we can get to, the stats will come.”

Eagles’ new safety Chip Kelly was impressed by Malcom Jenkins in his first action in Eagles OTAs. •

“He’s been outstanding. He’s an extremely intelligent football player and that showed from the first time

we were out on the field with him. He understands the stress on the corners and what that is. ... I know Billy [Davis] is really excited about him out there, it seems like he’s been here for a while.”

Eagles could take long look at undrafted FA’s NFL. Pay attention to Eagles’ undrafted rookie Trey Burton — he could be playing tight end on Sundays. Antonio Gates, Wes Welker and Arian Foster are all Pro Bowlers. One other thing they all have in common is that they were all undrafted free agents, trying to make a team. The Eagles signed 15 players after the draft this year, though one, Alabama cornerback John Fulton, has already been cut. Certainly, once roster sizes begin to slim down several of these players will no longer be on the team. However, it may be that for some of these players, a productive training camp will coincide with a narrow spot on the Eagles’ depth chart.

One intriguing player is Florida tight end Trey Burton (6-foot-2, 224 pounds) who saw playing time at every offensive skill position with the Gators. It’s no secret Chip Kelly loves a versatile player. Burton finished his collegiate career with 720 rushing yards, 976 receiving yards, 103 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. His experience at quarterback should prove an advantage in picking up the offense and working against defensive schemes. If Burton shows the Eagles promise, he could provide the versatility they’d hoped for from James Casey — at a fraction of the cost. Casey was paid $4 million in 2013 while catching just three passes for 31 yards. LUKE MILLER @MetroPhilly

Howard is back to driving in runs MLB. Ryan Howard made quite a splash with his walk-off home run Wednesday night over the Rockies. Ryan Howard, just like the Phillies as a team, has been

painfully inconsistent. But over his last two starts, the powerful lefty has made a little bit of history. His three-run walk-off bomb against the Rockies Wednesday capped a fourRBI night for the first baseman, his second four-RBIperformance in two starts. In a 9-0 win just two days prior, Howard knocked in five runs, mak-

NFL. Many contenders will vie to make Eagles in training camp With three months to go until the 2014 NFL season kicks off, the Eagles have most of their roster set for the upcoming season. But there are a few spots on offense that could welcome a dark-horse candidate to make a run at a position on the team. Toledo running back David Fluellen (5-foot-11, 224 pounds) finished his college career with 4,082 all-purpose yards, but missed significant time in three seasons because of multiple injuries, including an ankle injury that caused him to miss three of Toledo’s final four games. He will be campaigning to help replace the departed Bryce Brown, but it will be an uphill battle against the likes of Darren Sproles and Chris Polk.

There’s nothing like a walk-off homer to energize a team. / GETTY IMAGES

Still, Fluellen’s injury history is less troubling if the team is only relying on him as a third- or fourthstring option rather than if he were a starter. Placekicker Carey Spear (5-foot-9, 194 pounds) from Vanderbilt has a chance to unseat Alex Henery, who struggled from distance in 2013. LUKE MILLER

By the numbers

54 yards

Spear’s longest career field goal came from 54 yards out. He showed promise on kickoffs in 2013, recording 47 touchbacks on 73 kicks, more than double his total in 2012. Kickoff distance was another area of Eagle fan discontent with Henery.

ing him the first person to drive in four runs in backto-back starts this season. Crunching the numbers, Howard is currently on pace to hit 29 homers and drive in 110 RBI. If a few other pieces start hitting too, it could help the Phillies turn things around. “We’ve talked about trying to build on games like this,” Howard said.
