‘Sea Change’ exhibit shows water knows no boundaries storm surge in the future. The tool, which is at the exhibit and also available online, lets users zoom in, and even look up specific addresses to understand in more detail how their residences, places of work, or other important locations will be affected. For example, a rise in sea level combined with a storm surge in 2050 shows many of the city’s vibrant hot spots submerged. Fenway, the South End, the Back Bay and the Innovation District are just a few that could potentially be under seven feet of water, according to Sasaki’s projections. Sasaki also released an online video, “Sea Change: Boston — Engaging the Community,” featuring community members’ thoughts on sea level rise, and the need to develop solutions that will make the city and region more resilient. “Water knows no boundaries. You see Scituate, Cohasset, Winthrop, Chelsea, Revere and Gloucester. That’s really the big thing, to advocate for a really strong regional approach to address it.”

Flooded Hub. Rising sea levels combined with storm surges could wreak havoc on Boston’s fragile shoreline. As if a grave climate report released by the White House on Tuesday wasn’t enough to wake people up to the fact that climate change is far from a harmless notion, a new local exhibition is making it even harder for Bostonians to ignore the threat to their city’s vulnerable shoreline. “Sea Change: Boston,” now on display at District Hall in the Innovation District, aims to broaden the discussion about rising sea levels in the region and inspire ideas on how to prepare for it. Curated by Sasaki Associates in partnership with the Boston Architectural College, The Boston Harbor Association and the city of Boston, the free exhibit has been on display since April 7 and will remain open until June 4. “The idea was to introduce the water vulnerabilities that Boston has to a sea level rise and look really optimistically forward and start to lay out what some of the strategies are to address it,” said Sasaki Principal Jason Hellendrung. “We hope to build a broader community conversation to start addressing this issue.” The exhibition includes an interactive map, developed by researchers at Sasaki, which allows users to select a flooding scenario and then a city system to see what will be affected by sea level rise and

The dog was sometimes out of view of the camera.

Ukraine slides toward war Deadly fighting. The surge in violence has changed the tone of international diplomacy. Both sides have been burying their dead as Ukraine slides further toward war, with supporters of Russia and of a united Ukraine accusing each other of tearing the country apart. Tuesday morning was quieter than past days in eastern and southern Ukraine, but the deadliest week since the separatist uprising began has transformed the conflict, hardening positions and leaving little room for peace. At the Holy Trinity Church, seven priests led mourners in prayer for a woman killed by large-caliber bullets, which the townspeople believe were fired by Ukrainian troops. “They shoot at us. Why? Because we don’t want to live with fascists?” asked 58-yearold passport photographer Sergei Fominsky, standing with his wife among the mourners.

Talking points

Paltrow and Martin hang out all the time For a husband and wife who are “consciously uncoupling,” Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin seem pretty cool about hanging out together, according to People magazine. Last month, they attended Robert Downey Jr.’s star-studded birthday party together and joined forces for son Moses’ 8th birthday — and this was after heading to the Bahamas for a family vacation immediately following the announcement they were splitting up. And now they’ve been spotted together again during a group dinner at Il Ristorante de Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, California, smiling and laughing as they departed the establishment post-dinner with friends.

Online. “Kate has wrecked the friendship, and Jessica pins the start of their troubles to the beginning of Kate’s relationship with Matt a few years ago. Unfortunately, Kate has become not a nice person since she’s been with Matt. It’s sad, but Kate and Jessica’s friendship is completely done.”

Fox claims both pregnancies were surprises Megan Fox admits that both of her pregnancies with husband Brian Austin Green were

complete surprises. “We can’t let Brian near me anymore,” she jokes to Ellen DeGeneres during an interview. Joking aside, a pregnancy can be a bit stressful, especially if you’re just starting production on “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” as Fox was. “It’s an action movie and requires a lot of running and jumping and stunts,” she says. “The producers would come see me in the morning in the makeup trailer and I would be clinging to a box of saltines. We kept pickles in the refrigerator for me, and I was constantly on the verge of vomiting.”

Hudson and Alba are no longer BFFs Former BFFs Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba are reportedly not the friends they once were, and it’s all due to Hudson’s change in attitude when she started seeing Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, according to Radar

What can we expect from your new show? It’s a tour through my brain again, but hopefully with some intelligent points — like why the hell did we do

human sacrifice? There is no logical reason why a god that created people would actually like people cut up into little bits. Do the gods want a refund on specific people? I can understand why people would, especially in the old days when we were just farmers and when the weather was bad, you could see why they would say, “the gods hate us,” so we must make them happy. ... But I cannot see any logic when you say, “What the gods really want is that one of the guys they sent down and put on the Earth, they would like killed and sent back up.” Do you find yourself looking for material in a global way, or do you focus on the U.K.? No, because this is [my] most expansive comedy tour, and maybe most expansive tour ever ... I was putting in standup each night, so I was increasing it. Tonight in Los Angeles I will do 60 minutes in English and 15 minutes in Spanish as an encore. ... Once I can get the Spanish to about an hour, hour and 15 minutes, I can tour down in all of South America. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

She’s your mom, or the mother of your children – how could you forget?! You’ve got a few days to make this right, and nothing says “I totally completely remembered Mother’s Day” like a nice meal. Fortunately, these spots don’t take reservations for small parties, so swing in on Sunday, and enjoy the same odds as all the others who totally, completely remembered.

‘Snow White’ for the adult set Theater. Gold Dust Orphans’ latest production is its strongest yet, with a “grand, menacing” Evil Queen. In case the title “Snow White and the Seven Bottoms” doesn’t make it perfectly clear, Ryan Landry’s latest is not suitable for children. It’s probably not suitable for adults who don’t appreciate the off-color antics of this incredibly talented, irreverent, gender-bending troupe, either. But for the rest of us, including the legions of Gold Dust Orphans fans who’ve seen everything the group has done, this is its funniest, slickest, most well-executed production to date. And it’s not even all that risque. Landry and company have elevated their trademark lampooning into an art form with first-rate acting, impeccable direction (James P. By-

rne) and outstanding choreography (Meredith Langton). But somehow they maintain the delightful silliness and innocence of a bunch of people playing dress-up. This ensemble has been working together for so long that the little foibles that befall a live production often become the funniest moments of the performance. On opening night, The Foot-

man’s (Scott Martino) mustache came unglued, and he and Prince Charming (Paul Melendy) ran with it, trading uproarious off-the-cuff banter that left the crowd howling with laughter. Not that business as usual isn’t a laugh-’til-it-hurts experience with the Orphans. As the Evil Queen, Landry delivers a grand, menacing performance, while Olive A. Nother displays her always impeccable comic timing as The Magic Mirror. Martino, who also does the elaborate costumes, is endearing as The Footman, while Melendy’s swishy turn as the Prince makes you glad he doesn’t end up with the lovely Snow White (Jessica Barstis). As for the Seven Bottoms, there are really only six, and while you’ll know their names, it may be the first time you’ve seen their faces. (No spoilers here.) NICK DUSSAULT @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Origins. New program lets you trace back ancestry 1,000 years Humanity has long wondered where in the heck we come from. Sure, we’ve all heard rumblings of Bedrock or seen the first 40 minutes of “2001: A Space Odyssey.” However, it’s all conjecture. There is no way to actually know, right? Well, hold onto your clubs and animal skins, now there is — sort of. Scientists at the University of Sheffield in the U.K. have developed a new kind of GPS — Geographic Population Structure — that leads you to

where your ancestors originally came from. The technique cross-references your DNA with world population over time to ascertain where, down to the village, your forebears hailed from, as well as where they met the partners that eventually spawned you. The technology is only accurate to the first 1,000 years, so all of you wondering what your weird relatives were up to in ancient Egypt are out of luck. LAWRENCE BONK

QUIT IT AND KWIT MAY MAKE YOU STOP SMOKING Quit It Price: Free or 99 cents Platform: iOS

Kwit Price: Free or $1.99 Platform: iOS

If you’re lucky, the hardest thing you’ll ever have to do is quit smoking. Not everyone realizes this. There’s a terrible stigma that comes with cigarettes, one so severe that those who pass laws — raising taxes on them, outlawing them from public spaces, even banning e-cigarettes — don’t seem like they’ve ever had to deal with a serious and crippling nicotine addiction. On top of that, everyone acting like a jerk about it really only makes you want to have a cigarette. But apps care. Apps will help you. Granted, apps aren’t the same as nicotine gum, patches or lozenges, which

Quit It tracks how long you’ve been cigarette-free. / PROVIDED

help you wean yourself slowly off of a habit that dominates your every waking moment. (Apps also aren’t cigarettes — delicious, wonderful, soothing cigarettes.) But two apps help build up your willpower and your mind (and eventually your body, which will be happy you’ve given up the smoke). Of course, both are heavy on the guilt trips. Quit It is a sparse, if not bare bones,

Get overly nice motivational slogans with Kwit. / PROVIDED

program that measures your returning health as well as the money you’re saving from the moment you’ve given up smoking. In fact, it measures this in seconds, with a counter at the top. It not only tracks the tar that’s no longer inside you; it has charts that track

your blood pressure returning to normal and your declining risk of a sudden heart attack and those four wonderful words, “cancer of the mouth,” as well as your reviving circulation. Quit It can be pretty heavy, especially if you have an unhealthy fear of death. Kwit is gentler, or at least more passive-aggressive. It has less information than Quit It — which isn’t entirely scientific, since you log in without doing a physical — but it’s more stylish, treating it like a game and giving you a notice when you’ve made specific achievements (such as your heart rate returning to normal). It also shoots out motivational slogans at your command, which are almost positive to a fault.

It’s not too late to combat your allergies Achoo! Read our tips for seasonal relief. The health buzz-term of the season — the pollen vortex — is a result of the high number of tree pollens being released after their long winter of rest. But Dr. Raymond Dattwyler, New York Medical College’s Chief of Clinical Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology, thinks that media and drug companies are just instilling fear. “It’s meaningless,â€? he says, dismissing the notion of a pollen vortex.“Every spring there are articles saying this will be the worst season ever. It’s always sensationalized. March was cold, so pollen counts were low. They got higher at the end of April. They were high but not extraordinary.â€? However, the doctor says that the overall incidence of allergies is growing, which means the incidence of spring allergies is growing with it. Therefore, more people will be suffering symptoms. New treatments offer hope for drug addiction Help. Medical approaches are making news. Recent years have seen a slew of celebrity deaths brought on by drug abuse — Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cory Monteith and Whitney Houston, to name a few. In addition to the famous faces, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than 100 people die every day from a drug overdose. With the numbers steadily rising for two decades, medical experts are investing more and

more in new devices and treatments to fight addiction. The Food and Drug Administration made headlines in April with the fast-tracked approval of a hand-held device called Evzio to reverse opioid overdose. Similar to the way an EpiPen works, Evzio delivers a rapid single dose of naloxone to halt an overdose. Prior to this approval, the drug could only be administered by medical professionals. It is now being marketed to caregivers and family members. “One thing we’re learning in the field is that we really have to go at this problem with everything we have, combining

counseling, appropriate medications and anything else that may be helpful to our patients, such as exercise, meditation, family services and support groups,” says drug-abuse expert Dr. Deni Carise, deputy chief clinical officer at CRC Health Group and adjunct clinical professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. According to Carise, one of the biggest hurdles in substance-abuse treatment is getting addicts to take new medications. Drugs such as naltrexone can be pivotal in helping patients win the battle against opioid and alcohol dependence, but many patients

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than 100 people die every day from drug overdoses.

feel hesitant to take new drugs in order to wean themselves off of others. Even so, Carise says the field is evolving. “What we’re seeing now is not just more medications being developed and discovered, but more acceptance of medications as a component of treatment,” she says. One such drug is baclofen, in the works to manage cocaine addiction. Originally marketed to treat muscle spasticity and spinal-cord injury, the drug is showing promising results when used to help keep people

from relapsing on cocaine. Baclofen works by targeting the circuit in the brain that’s hardwired for rewards such as food and sex. This “go” circuit gets particularly revved up by a person’s preferred drugs. Recent studies have shown baclofen to calm down this circuitry. Still in development, the drug helps fight cravings triggered by even the smallest cues. “For longtime users, there are many small things in their environments that can subliminally remind them of their drug use, which eventually become

conscious cravings,” says Dr. Anna Rose Childress, research professor of psychiatry and director of the Brain-Behavioral Vulnerabilities Division in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. “We think this volcanic eruption of craving that comes out of nowhere is triggered by things they’re not even aware of on a conscious level,” she adds. LASIK & Beyond Taking Human Sight To The Next Level At New England Eye Center, we truly are taking sight to the next level. Thanks to recent advances in laser and lens implant technology, our highly-trained specialists are helping patients of all ages enjoy the type of clearer, more natural vision they desire. Vision for the way we live here in New England!

VISION for our

NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots.

Heroes

Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lenslike device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time.

HEALTH GUIDE

How Dental Crowns Can Help You By Dr. John Madden What Is a Crown? A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth or dental implant. The crown fully encases the entire visible portion of the tooth or may attach to an implant. A crown can restore a tooth’s shape, size and strength as well as improve its appearance. Why Are Crowns Needed? A dental crown may be needed: s To reinforce teeth weakened by significant decay and prevent large fillings from breaking or leaking sTo support cracked teeth sTo provide stability for a denture sTo cover a dental implant sTo protect a root canal filling by providing a seal sTo improve the shape, size or overall appearance of a tooth What Types of Crowns Are Available? Crowns can be made of a variety of materials, including all metal (such as gold), all ceramic and porcelain-fused-to-metal. Each option has benefits as well as drawbacks. Traditional gold crowns are long-lasting and strong and an excellent option for back teeth; however, they are not appropriate for front teeth because they are unattractive. All-ceramic, tooth-colored crowns are an excellent choice in visible areas of the mouth. Until recently, they have not been the best option for patients who grind their teeth; however, newer ceramic crowns are made of harder, wear-resistant ceramics so ceramic crowns may now be an option for people who grind their teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have a metal shell on which is fused a porcelain veneer. The metal provides strength, and the porcelain gives the crown a white, tooth-like appearance and can be color matched to the surrounding teeth. As a result, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns offer a good balance of strength and attractiveness. The right crown option for you is best discussed with a highly qualified dentist.

Gold Crown

All-Ceramic Crown

Porcelain-Fused-toMetal Crown

How Long Do Crowns Last? This depends on the material chosen, the patient’s oral hygiene practices, how well the patient maintains the crown and how often the patient sees a dentist. Why Do Crowns Need to Be Replaced? Your mouth is a changing environment with extreme fluctuations in temperature and acidity. As a result, no dental restoration (e.g., crown or filling) can last forever. It is important, therefore, that you visit your dentist at least every six months for a check up to make sure that your dental restorations are still intact and your teeth and gums are healthy. Dr. John Madden, B.S., B.A., B.Dent.Sc. is an Assistant Professor within the Division of Prosthodontics at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in downtown Boston. Dr. Madden also sees patients at Tufts Dental Associates, a full-service faculty practice located within Tufts Dental School. Tufts Dental Associates offers a full range of general and specialty dental services conveniently within one practice.

Re: ‘Climate confusion’ (Metro, May 2) I’m confused as to why there is still “climate confusion.” I just read the latest National Climate Assessment report, which was released today. There is undeniable evidence that the average temperature of the Earth continues to rise, resulting in, among other things,

green energy the way we put money into oil and gas, we would be able to catch up to countries such as Germany and become energy self-sufficient. Since 2004, America has experienced nine of the top 10 most costly hurricanes. In the past five years, we have experienced terrible floods, fires and droughts. The government should spend TRILLIONS on wind and solar power; if we did we would be free of fossil fuels. Big Oil loves when the average citizen fights for their right to pollute.

B’s unable to mount another comeback Vanek quickly made its way to Tomas Plekanec in front of the net for an easy Plekanec score at the 10:57 mark of the first period. Subban again made his presence felt minutes later as, fresh off the bench due to a roughing minor on a huge open-ice hit to Reilly Smith, the Canadiens’ electric defenseman fooled Tuukka Rask on a breakaway. The goal put the Habs up, 2-0, after one period, whipping the Bell Centre crowd into a bilingual frenzy. Canadiens defenseman Mike Weaver continued Montreal’s early dominance in the second when he blocked a Bruins shot, opening up a breakaway goal by Dale Weise, who beat Rask through the legs. The Bruins began to chip away late in the second period when Patrice Bergeron won a faceoff and then promptly batted in a Torey Krug shot. Andrej Meszaros scored at the 17:44 mark in the third for the B’s, who had pulled Rask.

Rivera a great fan of Pedroia, not so much Cano Former New York Yankees great Mariano Rivera takes a dig at former teammate Robinson Cano and praises current Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia in a book that was released Tuesday, according to New York Daily News excerpts. In “The Closer,” Rivera says of Cano: “There is no doubt that he is a Hall of Fame caliber [player]. It’s just a question of whether he finds the drive you need to get there. I don’t think Robby burns to be the best.” Rivera then goes on to rave about Pedroia. “Nobody plays harder, gives more, wants to win more,” Rivera said in the book. “If I have to win one game, I’d have a hard time taking anybody over Dustin Pedroia as my second baseman.” MATT BURKE Besmirch ‘The King’

Pierce dishes on dislike for LeBron One could easily make the case that LeBron James’ greatest playoff rival is Paul Pierce. Pierce and James met for the 26th time in the postseason Tuesday night but the current Nets small forward and former Celtics legend maintains his “hatred” for James is a “basketball-only” storyline. “I mean, it’s going to be a dislike there,” Pierce said of James. “I think everything — the dislike for me, LeBron or Miami or Cleveland — it’s all based on what we are both chasing. And that’s about it.” James’ coach Erik Spoelstra also talked with ESPN about Pierce’s history with James and the Heat. “[Pierce and Garnett] may be wearing black and silver,” Spoelstra said. “But there’s green underneath it somewhere.” MATT BURKE
