‘A landmark going up in flames’

Suit Corner. The half-century old establishment at Third and Market streets in Old City caught fire Wednesday morning and smoke billowed out the entire day. A scary situation. After some time, firefighters had to let the building burn, saying it was too risky to go inside.

Fire crews battle all-day blaze inside Suit Corner Two-alarm. The clothing shop at Third and Market streets was destroyed in a fire that burned for most of the day.

A two-alarm fire at the Suit Corner shop in Old City broke out about 9 a.m. Wednesday and was still burning as of press time. “It’s the worst type of thing to catch fire,” said Lucien Lewis, 43, who sells stone carvings in the area. “That was the clothing spot. ... That’s a lot of suits, and a lotta, lotta, lotta stuff up in flames.” Eight employees were in the store when the fire broke out, according to reports. Flames were still licking up from the roof at 1 p.m., and Market Street was closed between Second and Fourth streets as firefighters kept water on the structure. One firefighter said

“When I got to the top of the block, it was real smoky. It looked like the block got blown up. ... There was smoke everywhere and fire engines. I was like, ‘It’s going down!’” Lewis

they had no choice but to let the fire burn itself out, as entering the building would be too risky. “When I got to the top of the block, it was real smoky. It looked like the block got blown up,” Lewis recalled. “There was a little girl lying on the ground, I guess she sprained her ankle. There was smoke

everywhere, and fire engines. I was like, ‘It’s going down!’” One firefighter required medical attention but no other injuries occurred. The building was the final remnant of the Suit, Shoe, Pants and Shirt Corner stores. “There was no explosion, just the fire coming out,” said the Rev. Boyzell

Williams, 64, who saw the fire start. “I’m saddened because I was gonna buy a suit there next week. I’ve been going there since 1973,” he said. “To me, that’s a landmark going up in flames. ... That’s a piece of history.” SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

An armed security officer subdued and arrested the suspect with help from the principal, Seefeld said. A 16-year-old student wielding two knives went on a stabbing rampage in the hallways of a Pittsburgh-area high school Wednesday, injuring 21 people, about half of them seriously, officials said. The attacker moved stealthily through Franklin Regional High School, stabbing his victims in the torso and slashing arms and faces before anyone realized what was happening, students and officials said. Some of the injured taken to nearby hospitals were in critical condition, doctors said. Students described a scene of panic, with the school hastily evacuated after a fire alarm was pulled. The unidentified sophomore suspected in the attack was in police custody, said Tom Seefeld, the chief of police in Murrysville, Pa. The attacker, described by a classmate as a

Trial. Pistorius made to view graphic photo of girlfriend’s skull A South African prosecutor forced Oscar Pistorius on Wednesday to look at a forensic photograph that showed the head of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after it was blown open by a hollowpoint bullet fired by the Olympic and Paralympic track star. In a dramatic opening to his cross-examination of Pistorius, prosecutor Ger-

rie Nel made him admit he had killed Steenkamp then later confronted him with the photograph showing the side and back of her skull, her hair matted with blood and brains. “Have a look there. I know you don’t want to because you don’t want to take responsibility,” Nel said to gasps from the packed public gallery. REUTERS

An idealist Do you really think Cyrus is devoted to government? Or is that a lie his id tells his superego, so he can seek power? I wouldn’t rule out your supposition. But I’m going to hold dear to the belief that there is idealism in the fundamental fabric of the guy. It’s only one piece of the puzzle, but I think it is intact. And as long as I’m playing him, it will be, because I don’t understand the guy if that isn’t somewhere in there.

Cyrus Beene, the White House Chief of Staff on ABC’s hit drama “Scandal,” is rarely happy and usually on the brink of cardiac arrest. But Jeff Perry, the actor who plays Beene, is, he says, “grinning until it hurts” over the chance to portray a character “written with depth, complexity and dichotomy by Shonda [Rhimes].” It’s something he says he hasn’t had

enough of since his days performing with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, which he cofounded. This complexity — there are almost no clear villains or heroes on “Scandal,” rare on a major network show — is also what’s won millions of very vocal fans. And the cast keeps these fans through constant social media contact. Perry says the online interaction he has with fans is reminiscent of the live-theater experience. “It feels unique in television and history, this level of while-it’s-happening conversation, with 70,000 people talking to each oth-

er at once,” Perry says. “It feels like when I was in 88 seats and we had our 300 subscribers, and we had a dialogue with them and got to know them.” The cast also has fun with social media on set. Says Perry, “We tease each other: ‘I’m Instagramming this!’ ‘Do I have your permission to tweet this picture of you with your pants around your ankles because they’re ripped and being tailored for the next shot?’” “Scandal” airs its finale on April 17. Get the perfect blowout at home

PLUS

For most of us, heading to a salon for a blowout every morning before work just isn’t affordable or practical. We chatted with two women who know a thing or two about blowouts, Drybar founder Alli Webb and Jenn Bradford, a senior stylist at DreamDry, so you can use their top notch tricks at home.

“Most people don’t know this, but it’s not just about using heat to dry your hair. It’s about putting minerals into your hair, which actually help you have that bounce and shine. Alli Webb, Drybar founder

First, it’s important to have the right products. Drybar’s Webb highly suggests investing in a good hair dryer.

After you wash your hair, apply a thermal protector from mid to bottom to protect your hair from the dryer’s heat and to help it dry smoothly. Bradford favors Kerastase Ciment Thermique. Then, rough dry your hair with a towel until it’s 75 to 80 percent dry. “This is so important because if you don’t rough dry your hair, it will be sopping wet and the drying process will take forever to blow dry, says Bradford.

DATING

Dating, with references Intros. A new dating site relies on women to refer available men in their social circle.

Jess, Meet Ken is a website that represents both a love story and a business idea. “It really is how we met and how we fell in love, says Jessica Deckinger of JessMeetKen.com, the dating site she recently launched with her husband — you guessed it — Ken. Here’s how it works: Women recommend single men in their life to other single women online. Jess and Ken met on a defunct website similar to the one the couple now runs with their business partner, Adele Tongish. The dating world is nothing new for her and Ken; they co-founded HurryDate, which organizes speed-dating events, in 2001 and sold the company several years later.

Jess and Ken Deckinger, now married and parents to three daughters, created the site to help people meet the same way they met each other. / PROVIDED

“This cuts through the noise of online dating and provides you with a true and honest way to meet people in their most genuine form, Ken says of the

Boston-based company. Rather than dealing with the “dating fatigue that comes from sorting through an overflowing inbox of emails from

potential suitors, women can connect with another woman who cares about the guy she posted. And that’s the key. “Every woman wants to get to the core of who that guy is from someone who knows him very well, he says. Plus, there’s an extra connection when a woman can relate to the woman who’s vouching for the guy she’s posting about. “I didn’t know Adele, but she looked like someone I would be friends with, says Jess, who felt she could relate to Tongish because of the funny profile she created for Ken. In turn, she could relate to Ken, too. Ken says a guy doesn’t always post what a woman wants to see. “He doesn’t know how to present his redeeming qualities as well as a woman can present them to other women, he confesses. It certainly worked for them. VICKI SALEMI @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

What’s new at the Philly Farm and Food Fest Organic. Think of it as a giant farmers market — with oysters and booze. The Philly Farm and Food Fest, the brainchild of Fair Food Philly and the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture, is back for its third year. The festival is bringing in even more vendors purveying local, organic and fair-trade goods, and organizers keep dreaming up new ways to educate and entice guests. Brian Harman is the oyster farm manager for Atlantic Cape Fisheries, Inc. In 1997, Jersey-based ACF teamed up with Rutgers University to experiment with commercial farming of Cape May Salt Oysters. The results were more than a little successful. “[We want to] deliver the message that the most delicious oysters on the East Coast are being grown sustainably right here in southern New Jersey,” says Harman. “We

Casey Spacht, GM at Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative, feels the same. “I see this as another way to get more people connected to farms,” explains Spacht. LFFC has emphatically manned a booth

FOOD

Keeping it in the Sbraga family Hot Chef. You have Aaron Gottesman to thank (or blame) for Fat Ham’s ďŹ ery “hot chicken.â€? Chef Aaron Gottesman went from Kevin Sbraga’s namesake Center City restaurant to Fat Ham, the more intimate Sbraga affair in University City. He’s chef de cuisine at a place that’s busy just about every night of the week, and chances are you can find at least one person in the dining room at all times that came for the hot chicken — and we’re warning you now, they mean “hotâ€? as in “your mouth will be on fire.â€? Good thing there are plenty of options on that extensive whiskey list to wash it down. How was the transition from Sbraga to Fat Ham? I wanted to try to run this restaurant as similarly as I could to Sbraga. A lot of the systems that are put in place here work. It’s still a different space but everything is going really well. Having limited space is nice. The busier it is, the more people want to be here. It’s great to see that people are willing to wait, which is better than having a big space with a lot of empty tables. Where are you grabbing a drink after work? I’d say that a lot of people within the [Sbraga] organization go to Pub & Kitchen. It’s a good in-between spot for both restaurants. Generally we go to St. Declan’s [Well] since it’s right here. They know all of us, and we know them. It’s easy to pop in there after work since everyone lives in different neighborhoods. What’s your neighborhood? Queen Village. I go to Ela a lot. I know Jason [Cichonski, the chef and owner] and it’s basically right across the street from my apartment. JULIA WEST @MetroPhilly

Fat Ham is part of this new restaurant push in University City. What do you think of the area? I had really no experience with the restaurants in this area. But there are so many people here with the schools — both employ-

Re: ‘Torture in the name of US freedom’ (Metro, April 8) I am appalled and saddened by the opinions of letter writer Mary Ruggiero. She claims Rep. Pelosi and Sen. Feinstein “do not love this country.” I love this country; in fact I joined the Army and went to Kosovo and Iraq in support of it. Yet I will never condone the torture of human beings, whether they are terrorists or anyone else. I understand the desire to be safe, but we do not achieve that through torture. We lose our soul as a country — not to mention the souls of those compelled to conduct those interrogation techniques.

I’m just curious — I’ve been reading Metro for years, but I’ve never seen any shows that I watch on the “TV watch list.” How come you never report on the “NCIS” shows or “Criminal Minds” or “Law & Order: SVU” or “Kitchen Nightmares” or “Chopped” or “Iron Chef”? That’s just a portion of what I watch, but I’ve never seen any shows that I actually watch in your paper. CYNDI LUNSFORD, VIA EMAIL

It’s been 11 days since the field for the Frozen Four was finalized. That means the combatants have had plenty of time to rest up, study their opponent and try to channel their energy until now. While that’s let injured players have time to heal, it also has to concern coaches their players might be a little rusty. “We’re certainly used to it,” said Boston College’s Jerry York, whose club got a recent pep talk from Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick. “We drew a bye and had to sit 10 days before the tournament, so this is par for the course. You just have to start from scratch and have good practices.”

Over 67 years Minnesota and North Dakota have banged heads 284 times, including the 1979 championship game, won by the Gophers. Minnesota leads the series 138-130-15. That all changed when realignment split them apart. “To play North Dakota is one of our favorite games,” said Minnesota’s Nate Condon, whose 27-6-6 club has been No. 1 most of the season. “Being in a Frozen Four setting even more so.”

Boston College will be making its 24th trip to the Frozen Four, with five national championships on its resume. North Dakota is going for the 21st time. It has seven titles. For Minnesota, this is No. 20. The Golden Gophers have won five. And Union? The little school of 2,500 from upstate New York will be making only its second Frozen Four appearance.

Flyers fans, who have only heard his name are anxious to see Union’s highly rated defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere in person. Depending on how things play out, they’re hoping he’ll turn pro after this season and perhaps be wearing the orange and black on this same ice next year. “He’s a pretty dynamic player who brings people out of their seats,” said Union coach

This Frozen Four, the latest big event to pass through these parts, has nothing to do with Princess Anna or any other characters from the popular Disney movie featuring an all-star cast. But it does have everything to do with deciding the NCAA’s best on ice. The fun starts at 5 p.m. Thursday when Boston College, led by Johnny Gaudreau, a local kid from South Jersey who is considered the favorite to win the Hobey Baker Award as the game’s best player, takes on Union College. But the list of big events to call Philadelphia — and especially the Wells Fargo Center — home since the building opened in 1996 is long and impressive. It’s played host to the NCAA’s men’s tournament opening weekend on three occasions, most recently last year — as well as the 2001 Eastern Regionals. And who will ever forget the 1992 Eastern Regionals finale at the Spectrum where Christian Laettner and Duke edged Kentucky 104-103 in overtime in what many call the greatest game ever played? Besides that, there were the 1998 U.S. Figure Skating championships, the 2002 NBA All-Star Game, 2008 U.S. Olympic Team gymnastics trials,

The NFL released its preseason schedules Wednesday, and the Eagles will begin with an exhibition against the Bears, somewhere between Aug. 7 and 9 at Soldier Field. NHL power rankings | by Rich Slate No. 1

No. 2

With a win on Thursday in Winnipeg, coupled with a loss by St. Louis at Minnesota, the Bruins can capture their second ever Presidents’ Trophy. By going 6-1-3 in its last 10 games, Boston has created some separation between itself and St. Louis. For the B’s, it’s all about getting rest for their key players before the postseason begins next week.

Stars (39-29-11)

The race for the top seed in the West has unexpectedly become interesting with St. Louis’ swoon. Anaheim is 6-3-1 in its last 10 games.

The Sharks have been treading water lately. They are three points behind Anaheim but they have an outside chance at winning the PaciďŹ c Division.

Fun fact: the Canadiens will be the only Canadian team in the 2014 Stanley Cup playos. Montreal is going to be the three or four seed.

This team’s playo hopes come with a 6-foot-7 asterisk. Big Ben Bishop hurt his wrist Tuesday and the goaltender’s availability is cloudy at best.

You can’t overstate the importance of Dallas’ 3-2 win over Nashville on Tuesday. That kept the Stars two points ahead of Phoenix for the eighth seed.

They built up plenty of cushion, but Blues fans have to be getting a little worried heading into the playos. St. Louis has lost its last three games.

Chicago has won its last three games and the better news is that they should get Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews back in the playos.

The Kings have dropped their last two games, but are still 7-3-0 in their past 10 games. They are locked into the sixth or seventh seed.

They are two points behind Tampa Bay and have only two games left but the Rangers could leapfrog the Lightning into fourth place in the East.

Columbus has won its last two games and the Blue Jackets end the regular season with three games on the road (Dallas, Tampa Bay and Florida).

The Avalanche are the opposite of the Blues. They are playing really well heading into the games that really count.

Most people feel as though Bruins-Penguins in the Eastern Conference Finals is a foregone conclusion.

The Wild rallied for a thrilling 4-3 shootout win over Boston on Tuesday. Before the game had even ended, they clinched.

The key now for the Flyers is to avoid Boston for as long as it can since the Bruins swept the season series (3-0).
