An armed robber beat, shot and nearly kidnapped a mailman in his postal truck in Dorchester over the weekend, and now a reward is being offered for information on the suspect. Officers were called to Bailey Street just after 6 p.m. Friday for a report of a shooting. When officers got there they

found the worker with a gunshot wound to his wrist and a bloody cut on his head. The United States Postal Service worker said the robber jumped into his truck and “demanded the victim give him the draw,” Boston police said. When the worker asked “What draw?” the robber hit the worker in the head with the gun and at some point during the robbery shot him. The robber then forced the worker to strip out of his USPS uniform and get into the rear of the truck cab. That’s when the robber started to drive away with the worker still inside. With the robber now driv-

ing the truck away from the scene, the worker made a choice to try to flee. “The victim reported, while in fear for his life, he opened the rear door of the vehicle and got away on foot down Bailey Street in the direction

of Dorchester Avenue,” police said in a statement. The worker suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. The truck was found a short distance away in a snowbank. It was towed for evidence. Detectives determined that the robber fled in a rental van that was later located at a gas station at Gallivan Boulevard and Washington Street in Dorchester. It was also towed as evidence. The United States Postal Inspection Service is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, the agency said. Bernadette Lundbohm, a

spokeswoman for the inspection service, said on Sunday that the investigation is ongoing and that investigators are following up on leads. A police spokesman on Sunday afternoon would not comment on any potential suspects and said that no arrests had been made. The suspect is described as a black man in his 20s, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall. He wore a black hooded jacket and a black face mask.

To our readers

Happy holidays from Metro As 2013 winds down, we would like to thank you, our faithful Metro readers and advertisers, for another successful year. Your support and feedback are what continue to make Metro the most-read daily newspaper in Greater Boston. Today Metro begins an abbreviated publishing schedule over the holidays, with just one more edition this week on Friday. Be sure to pick it up to discover the “Best of 2013” in local, national and international news, music, TV, movies, gossip and sports. Metro will return to the newsstands on Monday, Jan. 6, when we will resume our regular daily publishing schedule. Until then, we wish you all a happy and safe holiday season.

Jingle bells are jingling all the way through Somerville ‘Tis the season to dress up in holiday costumes and go for a run. Thousands of runners, many in holiday-themed costumes, turned out on Sunday for the annual Jingle Bell Run in Somerville. The popular event, put on by Marathon Sports, attracted more than 3,300 runners who started and ended the 5K race in Davis Square. After the run, participants celebrated at a 17-bar, post-race party sponsored by Harpoon Brewery. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO

Thousands of dollars’ worth of counterfeit T-shirts were confiscated on Friday from the Foxy Lady strip club in Brockton, where patrons were being offered the merchandise for $10 each or free if they paid for two lap dances. The cache of seized shirts, designed to look like those sold by the New England Patriots, Boston Bruins and other local sports teams, totaled about $10,000, the Brockton Enterprise reported. Some strippers were reportedly wearing the shirts during the bust, which was part of an ongoing investigation by Brockton police and Homeland Security. METRO

Busted. Man allegedly smashes T bus window A filled-to-capacity MBTA bus on Friday sent one would-be passenger over the edge. Thomas Caruso, 55, is due in court today for allegedly damaging the window of a bus near Maverick Station. Transit Police said Caruso became enraged and began to scream and kick the vehicle when he

was told he would have to wait for the next bus. During his arrest, Caruso allegedly kicked an officer in the leg. Police said he also possessed stolen property. Caruso is charged with malicious destruction of property, assault on a police officer and receiving stolen property. METRO

Metro readers give joy to needy kids with Tony’s Metro Magic Toy drive. Tony’s Metro Magic holiday drive collected hundreds of presents from generous readers this year.

“It’s a struggle between what they want and what they need and what we can afford. We’re just very grateful.”

They were a bit shy, but they didn’t have to say anything. Their smiles said it all. Lilliana and Za’Khai, both 2, smiled as they tore off the wrapping paper on their gifts donated by Metro readers for Tony’s Metro Magic toy drive. “Wow!” exclaimed Lilliana as she unwrapped a “Sammy the Snail” toy. Lilliana, Za’Khai and Kaira, 1, were just three of the scores of children who recently experienced the joy of Christmas thanks to Metro readers. The children and their mothers live in a shelter in Greater Boston.

“We are so grateful,” said Lilliana’s mother Vanessa. “It’s hard, but at the same time you want to keep up the spirit of Christmas. It’s a struggle between what they want and what they need and what we can afford. We’re just very grateful.” For months, hundreds of toys purchased by Metro readers have piled up in Metro’s offices to be donated to the Boston-based homeless services agency Heading Home and Greater Boston Toys for Tots. “On behalf of the 3,000 homeless families and individ-

Bringing joy

New name, same happy result Donors to Metro’s annual toy drive may have noticed something different this year — Metro Magic had become Tony’s Metro Magic. Earlier this year, Metro’s beloved editor-in-chief Tony Metcalf died after a battle with colon cancer. He was only 50 years old. As editor-in-chief, Metcalf oversaw the newspaper’s annual toy drive, which was something he looked forward to working on each year. This year, the effort was renamed Tony’s Metro Magic in his honor, as the Metro Magic campaign was one of his favorite initiatives. A former co-worker said Metro Magic and the joy it brought to children made Metcalf “the happiest I’ve ever seen him.” “Tony loved kids,” said his widow Leslie CainMetcalf. “He believed all children, no matter what the circumstances, deserved a childhood.”

The massive data breach disclosed by retailer Target Corp. last week is likely to teach its U.S. customers a painful lesson in payment card security and build support for an antifraud technology now sitting

on the shelf. For years, U.S. merchants and banks have balked at adopting an established system that uses credit and debit cards that store information on computer chips. The technology, ubiquitous in Europe, Canada and elsewhere, makes it harder for thieves to misuse data compared with cards that store data only on magnetic stripes. The problem is the costs of the new chips and some 10 million payment terminals to process them. Now, after years in

President Barack Obama’s health care law could have a “meltdown” and make it difficult for his Democratic Party to keep control of the Senate next year if ongoing problems with the program are not resolved, a Democratic senator said on Sunday. Sen. Joe Manchin, of West Virginia, who has urged delaying a penalty for people who do not enroll for health insurance in 2014 under

the law, told CNN that a transitional year was needed for the complex health care program, commonly known as Obamacare, to work. “It falls of its own weight, if basically the cost becomes more than we can absorb, absolutely,” Manchin told CNN’s “State of the Union” program. There have been complaints from consumers about higher premiums than they previously had to pay for health insurance after their old plans were canceled because of new standards under the law, as well as lingering problems with the main web portal

Mrs. Carter’s Wal-Mart tour

CULTURE

ICYMI, Beyonce visited a Tewksbury Wal-Mart before her Boston concert on Friday and spread some holiday cheer to the tune of $37,500. The singer, who might be the only human alive (other than Yeezus, of course) rivaling Miley Cyrus in the headline-making department, did a mic check on the Wal-mart’s PA system and announced that she would pay the first $50 of every customer’s purchase. This, of course, is super nice. But

NO EQU TO B

6

Cyrus on Cyrus action

also, what? What compelled Beyonce (other than a topnotch PR manager who, I’m sure, gently suggested this might not be a terrible stunt to pull) to drop by a Wal-Mart in nowheresville and pay for some last-minute shoppers’ layaway crap? Anyway, this is all to say that Beyonce’s image as one of the most likable ladies in the biz isn’t in any danger. Also, I bet Target is feeling pretty dumb about that whole “not selling her new album” thing right now. Just saying.

1

You guys have all seen this clip that’s going around from Miley Cyrus’ new music video for her song “Adore You,” right? If you haven’t, because, I guess, you don’t have a Google alert set up for “Miley Cyrus” like I do, here’s the relevant info: The teaser, which Cyrus posted to her Instagram over the weekend, features grainy, sex-tapeesque footage of Miley, er, pleasuring herself. I guess we now have the answer to the age-old question “Where does one in eternal pursuit of shock value and press go, after dry-humping a foam finger while practically naked onstage?” One goes to jollying oneself on camera. But, OK, here’s

3

Oh, for duck’s sake Aw, here’s a heartwarming story just in time for the holidays. Thanks to Hunt Channel, a Christian TV network, “Duck Dynasty” will not go homeless if A&E decides to drop it on its redneck butt. Hunt owner Merrill

Sport has said he’s more than happy to air the show himself. Because he says, “We don’t censor our personalities.” Meaning, I guess, he lets his people spit as much hateful bile as they want. First Amendment and whatnot. Give them liberty or give them death! (First, maybe, give them some teeth and a worldview that isn’t rooted in ancient mythology/idiocy.)

the thing: Anyone who has read my column in this publication knows that I’m a hardcore Cyrus apologist. I think she’s awesome and, despite her annoying penchant for tongue-wagging, she’s super talented! (“We Can’t Stop” was the undisputed No. 1 jam of the year — and maybe my life.) So, what I’m going to say next shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. I don’t hate this. Miley Cyrus is a next-level entertainer, and whoever is handling her PR right now deserves a big, fat holiday bonus. MyCy (I’m still totally going with this, and don’t understand why nobody else has picked this up) was the most-Googled person of the year, which is pretty damn impressive, considering where she started. Also, I’m sure there’s an opportunity for a think piece on female empowerment and sexual freedom here. I’m not going to write it, I’m just saying there’s a window.

Review. ‘Slutcracker’ is still putting the nuts in ‘The Nutcracker’ Madonna blasts from the PA system and, as the lights go down on the 75th performance of “The Slutcracker: A Burlesque, host Mehran Khaghani observes that this crowd “isn’t afraid of Monday morning. They certainly were not — they were hooting, hollering and taking in plenty of T&A in Babes in Boinkland director Vanessa White’s spin on the classic “Nutcracker. If you’ve never been, you’re in for some fun as you watch a grown Clara (Fanny Fawndew) explore her sexuality before committing to marriage. In Act I, Drosselmeyer (Karin Web) presents Clara with the Slutcracker Prince (Oliver Tryst), a life-size, pinksequined vibrator that has come to life. The audience marvels as Team Bad Xmas Sweater (the “Slutcracker version of the

ballet’s army of mice), led by Clara’s intended Fritz (Paolo Mania), battle the Slutcracker Prince for Clara’s heart (and loins). The Prince has a motley army of batteries (Kid Vicious and Joy Ryden), the Slutcracker Bunny (Femme BrulÊe) and randy old Drosselmeyer supporting him from behind (pun intended). It all ends with an orgasmic bang. Act II has all kinds of provocative antics, from Russian dominatrices in leather bondage to the erotic Dance of the Reed Pole. The Gimp (Willie Dumey) plays a bigger comedic role this season as he clears the stage of bras and panties between scenes. WELLBEING

WHEN IT’S MORE THAN JUST A DRINK WITH DINNER My boyfriend drinks way too much around the holidays. Sometimes he blacks out. He comes from a family of heavy drinkers and often gets drunk with his friends on the weekends throughout the year. How do I know if he’s an alcoholic, and what can I do? After graduating with a master’s degree, I spent the first three years of my social work career performing intake evaluations at an outpatient

addictions counseling center in Maryland. My job was to screen adults who had been referred from the courts — for drunken driving or other substance-related offenses — to determine whether they needed extensive alcohol and drug treatment, the 11-week substance education course or both. Unless they’re in recovery, alcoholics typically deny having a drinking problem. Even though we administered urine tests and sprang breathalyzers on people who reeked of booze, that wouldn’t deter craftier folk from scheming to evade detection. But the test that usually gave them away didn’t require any lab work or electronics. It was a four-part questionnaire, commonly referred to as the CAGE. While alcoholics are

usually the last to admit they drink too much, loved ones are usually the first. That’s why being annoyed by someone about your drinking, combined with trying to cut back and/or feeling guilty, is often an indicator of problematic drinking, which could be either a sign of abuse or dependence. What’s the difference? According to the Diagnostic Statistic Manual of Mental Health, people who abuse alcohol develop problems — blacking out, getting into fights, driving drunk — as a result of their impaired judgment from alcohol consumption, even though they are not physiologically dependent. They may engage in binge drinking, which causes or exacerbates an ongoing relationship, work, financial or legal problem. Chances of someone becoming physically dependent are greater if a family member was or is an alcoholic. That doesn’t mean that those who have alcoholism in their families will become alcoholics. But the earlier the problem is addressed, the better. The best thing to do is to be honest with your boyfriend about it. Try the CAGE questionnaire. If he continues to binge, and it affects your relationship, you can encourage him to seek help — but don’t try to control his drinking. Instead, attend an Al-Anon meeting to learn about alcoholism and get support in making the best decisions for yourself.

Kim Schneiderman’s book “Step Out of Your Story: Writing Exercises to Reframe and Transform Your Life,” is due to be published in the spring. Email Kim your questions at askkim@metro. us.

Look familiar? Use the CAGE acronym to figure out if you or a loved one might have a drinking problem. / IMAGESOURCE What is CAGE?

CAGE is an acronym used to recall the telltale signs of alcoholism:

1

C – Cutting down: Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?

2

A – Annoyed: Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?

3

G – Guilty: Have you felt bad or guilty about your drinking?

4

E – Eye-opener: Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover

(eye-opener)? One “yes” to any of the questions, other than question #4, is considered a sign of alcohol abuse. Two or more “yeses,” or a “yes” to question No. 4, is considered a sign of alcohol dependence. Why is No. 4 enough to diagnose alcoholism? Alcoholics have developed a physiological dependence. Not only is there a constant craving and high tolerance, but they also experience withdrawal symptoms when they unsuccessfully try to cut back or stop. If you need to drink to function, you obviously have a problem.

You wrote it, we printed it: Metro takes a look at some of the most memorable letters to the editor of 2013. Some were thought-provoking, some eloquent, some witty — and some were just begging for a response. Here are excerpts from our favorites:

Let Zimmerman trial unite, not divide us Re: ‘Long live morality in the US!’ (Metro, July 23)

a one way or another, whether we watch FOX or MSNBC. WALT PETERS, VIA EMAIL, JULY 24

Metro did well with gun series Re: ‘Guns in our cities’ investigative series (Metro, week of Sept. 23) I wish to thank you for your article and coverage on guns in the city. I was very pleasantly surprised to see this in your paper, as you wouldn’t see this in the Daily News or the New York Times. But you

have reported this unbiased and fairly. That’s a plus in today’s media coverage. I am very traditional and conservative, also a native New Yorker, so I’ve seen what has become of the city over the years. Please thank your staff and writers for me, and keep up your good, unbiased work. KEVIN MORIARTY, OZONE PARK, N.Y., OCT. 15

Scorpio | Oct. 23-Nov. 21. Spend time with loved ones. Adapting to surrounding changes will lead to good fortune. A new partnership will give you something to look forward to in the year to come.

Sagittarius | Nov. 22-Dec. 21. Decorate and open your house to friends and family. Offering honest advice and meaningful opportunities will encourage a deeper bond with important people. BERNICE BEDE OSOL

Letter writer Kevin Metz’s statement that “there is nothing wrong with defending yourself” is correct. Unfortunately, the positions of both liberals and conservatives were rigidly locked in place. I don’t think Mr. Zimmerman set out that day to kill a young man. But I also think that he was caught up in the attitudes and fears underlying the “stand your ground” law. But, those six women had no choice but to acquit him. The prosecutor simply did not make a case. If the trial and its fallout showed nothing else, it showed that we’re all racist in

3 SPORTS Made to be broken

Manning breaks Brady’s record Tom Brady’s single-season touchdown record fell Sunday at the hands of rival Peyton Manning. The Broncos QB threw for four scores against Houston to reach 51 touchdowns this season and break Brady’s 50 touchdowns set in the 2007-08 season. Manning also has 5,211 passing yards, just 265 yards shy of Drew Brees’ single-season record. Denver plays Oakland next week.

Patriots rout Ravens despite already locking up AFC East a fumble recovery and two touchdowns were all in a day’s work for the Patriots defense on Sunday. The Ravens didn’t even sniff New England’s side of the field until well into the third quarter. They held Flacco to just 260 passing yards on 38 attempts, and Ray Rice to 40 rushing yards on 11 attempts. And nobody was a bigger fan of New England’s two late fourth-quarter defensive touchdowns than Tom Brady, who might still be looking for high fives on the sidelines.

NFL. The Patriots were already locked into the AFC East crown thanks to a Miami loss, but they reveled in a dominating win. Take all those whacky scenarios where the Patriots miss the playoffs and throw them out the window. For the 10th time in 11 seasons, the Patriots (11-4) are AFC East champions. The Dolphins made it official even before the Patriots and Ravens kicked things off, having lost to the Bills, 19-0, earlier Sunday. Even so, the Patriots came out with something to prove, and dominated the Ravens, 41-7. It was a defensive effort to remember, as Joe Flacco and the Ravens were completely shut down from start to finish. Tom Brady finished the game 14-of-26 for 172 passing yards, a touchdown and zero interceptions. The Patriots displayed a much more balanced offensive attack

3 on the ensuing drive and turned that into another touchdown six plays later. The Pats led 17-0 at halftime, and it was clear they came to play after a tough loss a week before in Miami.

Playing for a bye With the win, the Patriots still hold the No. 2 seed in the AFC. If they take care of business against the Bills next week in Foxboro, they will earn themselves a firstround bye and at least one home game in the playoffs. But if the Patriots lose and Cincinnati or Indianapolis win, the Patriots drop out of the No. 2 seed and will be forced to play in the wildcard round.

though, as they combined for 142 rushing yards on 34 carries. Metro breaks down what we saw in the win:

1

Fast start Going into the game knowing they had just won the division, it wouldn’t have been a surprise to see

the Patriots come out a little flat. And considering the Ravens had plenty of momentum, there was a chance it could have been ugly. It did get ugly — but for the Ravens, not the Pats. New England scored a touchdown on their second drive with a LeGarrette Blount 1-yard run, intercepted Flacco

Defense ďŹ rst Three interceptions, three turnovers on downs,
