Cops: DNA evidence helped in ‘Puppy Doe’ abuse case Dogged justice. Supporters of “Puppy Doe” showed up to court yesterday, and social media users had some harsh words for the suspect. The former Quincy man who is accused of torturing and abandoning a dog that came to be known as “Puppy Doe” earlier this year was tracked down thanks in part to DNA evidence that authorities said linked him to the crime. Radoslaw Czerkawski, 32, pleaded not guilty yesterday in Quincy District Court to 11 counts of cruelty to animals as well as misleading investigators. He was ordered held on $500,000 bail. Prosecutors said that DNA evidence helped them charge Czerkawski with the crime. Czerkawski was working as a caretaker for an elderly woman in her Whitwell Street home in Quincy earlier this year when the abuse allegedly happened, authorities said. “DNA material taken from the interior of … Whitwell Street in Quincy, MA. has been linked to DNA extracted by Dr. Martha Smith-Blackmore from ‘Puppy Doe,’” investigators wrote in a police report. The pit bull-type dog nicknamed “Puppy Doe” was found Aug. 31 in Quincy. The approximately 1-year-old dog was less than half of what her weight should have been. She also had various wounds and her tongue was purposely cut to look like a serpent’s tongue.

Twitter users weren’t any nicer.

Because her injuries were so severe, she had to be put down. Quincy Police Chief Paul Keenan said that investigators believe the abuse happened over the course of weeks and that Czerkawski had the dog for about four months. Mary Nee, the president of the Animal Rescue League of Boston, said yesterday that the case was one of the worst instances of dog abuse she’s seen. People outraged by the abuse showed up to the courthouse yesterday with signs and their dogs. At one point they chanted “Justice for Puppy Doe” and applauded police and authorities who worked on the case. When the Norfolk district attorney told reporters outside the courthouse that Czerkawski deserved a fair trial, the “Puppy Doe” supporters groaned and some shouted, “Yeah, right.” Keenan said he couldn’t offer an explanation for why Czerkawski allegedly abused the dog. “We don’t understand a motive,” Keenan said. “Who has a motive for something like this? I think it was probably just a sick individual. We really can’t explain that. There’s been nothing through our investigation that’s indicated any kind of a motive.” What’s more, New Bedford Police said yesterday that Czerkawski will face charges there because they said he stole $6,000 from a church in a larceny scheme last year. He allegedly told the church that he wanted to become a pastor, police said.

CapeFlyer summer rail service to run annually Boston to the Cape. Transportation officials applaud the success of CapeFlyer’s 2103 run. Seasonal weekend rail service between Boston and Hyannis will be offered annually as transportation officials look

into the feasibility of offering year-round CapeFlyer service, Gov. Deval Patrick announced yesterday. The announcement follows this year’s successful run from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, which saw ridership of 16,586 and fare revenue totaling more than $290,000. As a result, MassDOT will launch a study that examines whether

the train should do year-round runs. The agency also plans to add a Wareham stop to the line. “The CapeFlyer provides an excellent opportunity for people to have a convenient and relaxing ‘car-free’ trip to enjoy the beaches, restaurants, shopping and recreational opportunities that the Cape and Islands have to offer during the summer,” said Cape Cod Regional

Transit Authority Administrator Thomas S. Cahir. “We look forward to working with the Patrick administration and our partners to continue to provide new mobility options while reducing congestion.”

The Environment Department is drafting a new local wetlands ordinance and the Inspectional Services Department and Boston Public Health Commission have enhanced outreach and enforcement for flood-proofing. Menino also said that the city

continues to make progress in reducing its carbon emissions. Since 2005, when officials began measuring the city’s greenhouse gas emissions, Boston has reduced annual emissions by roughly 27 percent.

Between 2005 and 2012, Boston has reduced its annual greenhouse emissions from city operations by about 51,000 metric tons or 27 percent. Officials said the reduction is equivalent to removing roughly 10,000 cars off the road each year.

President orders curb to spying on UN headquarters Walls with ears. Foreign officials are crying foul after the revelation that the U.S. is listening in. President Barack Obama recently ordered the National Security Agency to curtail eavesdropping on the United Nations headquarters in New York as part of a review of U.S. electronic surveillance, according to an official familiar with the decision. Obama’s order is the latest known move by the White House to limit the NSA’s vast intelligence collection, in the wake of protests by allies, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, over U.S. spying on foreign heads of state. The full extent of eavesdropping on the U.N. is not publicly known, nor is it clear whether the U.S. has stopped all monitoring of diplomats assigned to the U.N. in New York or elsewhere around the world. “The United States is not conducting electronic surveillance targeting the United Nations headquarters in New

“Last Vegas stars Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline. If that weren’t enough Oscar winners for a light comedy, there’s a fifth: Mary Steenburgen, who plays a lounge singer who catches the eyes of the characters played by Douglas and De Niro. Steenburgen has, like her character, found herself drawn to music in her middle age: Since 2007, she’s also a songwriter, who wrote a tune she performs in the movie.

By now, you’re probably not exactly intimidated by working with actors. But were you scared of Robert De Niro? Was I slightly awed by him? Yes. Did I feel like I was about 16? Yes. But he recognizes the truth, which is that comedy is more difficult than drama. One of the main reasons I fell in love with my husband [Ted Danson] is how graceful he made it look as an actor. Amy Poehler talks turkey Interview. The “Free Birds voice star on time travel and “Parks and Recreation. “Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler’s latest feature film venture, “Free Birds, follows a pair of turkeys using a stolen time machine to steer the first Thanksgiving menu away from their ancestors. (She plays a love interest.) But Poehler has plenty to concern herself with in the present day. We spoke with her just before some good and bad news broke for her. First, she and Tina Fey were announced to host the Golden Globes for the next two years. Second, NBC was pulling “Parks and Recreation from its schedule for three weeks. Still, at least the government shutdown is over. Even considering the main characters are turkeys, is this the best use for time-travel

technology? Well, once we start breaking down animated films and the way that they should better use their technology, I think we’re really going to paint ourselves into a corner. “Parks and Rec was one of the few comedies that NBC didn’t cancel last year. That must feel a little reassuring.

Yep, NBC has supported us by keeping us on. We appreciate that. I would rather do the show than not do the show — that’s what I’ve learned. So many shows have come and gone while we’ve been there. We’re kind of like the patient who watches the other patients die on the table. We’ve been lucky. Certainly it’s tough sometimes to just not know your fate all the time, and we’ve certainly never been a show where we knew our fate. But because of that I think it’s just made us put our heads down and try to control the things we could, which was the work and the writing and the show. How do you think your

We basically did this in Season 3, which is Pawnee shuts down, but [during the real shutdown] she would’ve just been incredibly depressed. Like, in sweatpants, losing her mind. It was fascinating to watch, but ‌ So depressing. My biggest fear is that it will just lead to ambivalence and lethargy, which is the worst — which is the ultimate killer.

Expert tips for new homebuyers Advice. Gary Malin, president of Citi Habitats, shares his real estate wisdom.

+ PLUS

Interest rates are creeping up, and you’re tired of throwing away your paycheck on rent. More and more, home ownership feels right for you — even in this market. But before you start scanning listings, Gary Malin, president of Citi Habitats in NYC, offers this advice.

Set a price “You should always set a price for which you’re willing to spend,” Malin says. “Obviously everyone wants to get a deal. But in this market, which is a hot, competitive market, with lots of potential buyers for very limited inventory, you may need to pay asking price or potentially above asking to secure the apartment of your dreams. So set a price point you’re willing to go to. Try to obviously get it to be less, but if you have to get to that price point, don’t get upset that you didn’t get what you perceived to be a deal.”

Have the papers ready “Have all your finances ready to go — you’ve gone to your mortgage broker, you’ve been prequalified, you know what you can afford, you have your down payment ready. You’ve done everything to put yourself in the best possible position to close quickly because you’ve done the due diligence before actually going out and

Are Pet Treats Made in China Killing our Pets? By Attorney George Warshaw erky, those tasty little strips made of chicken, duck or sweet potato, are loved by pets. A number of ones made in China, according to FDA reports, have caused 3,600 illnesses in dogs and cats and resulted in the deaths of some 600 dogs and 100 cats.

J

About 60 percent of reports noted gastrointestinal problems in the animals, while about 30 percent pointed to significant kidney or urinary troubles, the FDA report noted. To keep your pets safe only buy products made in the U.S.A.. That may not be easy.

Study up “First and foremost, you need to [research and] understand the market conditions, which makes the process less scary for people,” he says. “Once they understand that there’s tight inventory, they understand that prices are a certain way.”

How to find a broker Besides the money for a down payment and closing cost, Malin advises having some savings for the unexpected. “Anything can happen, like a refrigerator breaking down,” he says. “It’s nice to have some reserves when you’re a homebuyer.” / STOCKPHOTO Quoted

“Before buying, you need to say to yourself, ‘Am I going to live here for at least five years?’ And if you don’t think so, maybe buying is not the appropriate decision now, because you have a lot of closing costs going in, and you also have a lot of closing costs going out.” Malin looking for a home. A lot of first-time homebuyers say, “Oh, I’m going to put my toe in the water.” What happens when you find the home of your dreams but you ended up losing it because you dragged your feet on all the other things that somebody else was more prepared to act on? I think if you’re going to make the decision to get into the market, you should go full-force. That doesn’t mean you have to buy anything, but you want to put yourself in the best possible position to succeed if you do find something that you want.”

fun with the process. If you take the process so seriously, issues that really aren’t issues — like a homeowner who isn’t negotiating with you — seem insurmountable. There are always ebbs and flows in the deal that ultimately work themselves out. But that’s why you have people there, like an attorney and broker, to guide you. So enjoy the process. Be proud of what you’re about to do, and rely upon the professionals there to keep an even keel, because if you get too emotional, it can make the process more frustrating.”

Don’t stress out

Know when to stop

“The first thing I tell a firsttime homebuyer is to have

“Know when this deal is not working for you. Know

what your drop-dead point is. Determine that before you start the negotiation process. If [the deal] gets beyond that point and if someone is trying to tell you why you should go outside of your comfort zone, walk away and find something else.”

TINA CHADHA

“Speak to all the people you know that have bought,” Malin says. “Personal references are the best way for most things to happen. Find out if they had a good experience with the individual. Do some research on that individual. If the person is in the market and they work for a reputable firm, the most important thing is to see if that person is someone you can relate to and they can relate to you. You can really create the environment that you want. For instance, I’m a responsive human being. I get back to everyone that works with me very quickly. If I was going to be engaging a real estate broker the one thing that would be very important to me would be for them to understand the way I work. It makes a better working relationship.”

Try going into a major pet store and asking for help in finding U.S.A. made products. You’ll be surprised at how few there really are. China supplies much of what is on the shelves of our pet stores. The major brands of China manufactured treats are Waggin’ Train, Canyon Creek Ranch, and Milo’s Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats. Oddly, testing of products associated with these illnesses did not reveal any contaminants. However, Chinese officials refused to allow U.S. inspectors to collect samples for analysis in laboratories outside of China. Whatever the cause, it seems clear from reports that there is some connection to jerky treats from China. Report illnesses to the FDA at www.fda.gov. Google it for details. © 2013 George Warshaw.

South Boston shoppers have something new to Covet DIY style. Hip, new consignment shop opens in Southie. Before Hanadi Hamzeh opened Covet, a brand new consignment shop in South Boston, she was working in a lab at Mass General Hospital. A Northeastern grad with a degree in medical laboratory science might seem like an unlikely candidate for the job of sole proprietor, buyer and style arbiter of a hip downtown boutique, but if you ask Hamzeh, fashion has been in her blood for as long as she can remember. We caught up with the 27-year-old shortly after the soft opening of her new store to talk shop and personal style. How hard was opening a brick and mortar on your own? Everything has been a learning experience for me. Opening a regular boutique is really risky. Not for nothing, I don’t pay full price for anything. I love to shop and I love good deals. I don’t think it’s fair if I

open a shop and sell all these full-price clothes when that’s not the way that I shop. So I asked myself, “Where would I want to shop?” And, I thought a consignment store, what a perfect idea. Did you do it all DIY? Everything was me! All my mannequins, my ottoman, my mirror — a lot of this stuff is second hand because I’m a green shop and it’s a consignment store. My motto is “lets act like it.” Consignment in itself is green already. You’re reusing clothes. Scouring Craigslist for these secondhand racks and mannequins was a pain in the butt, it’s so much easier to buy new stuff, but it was totally worth it. Our light fixtures are energy efficient, all of our paper products including receipts, bags, they are all recycled materials. I tried to make it a really happy shop. We try to be budget friendly, eco-friendly and ethical. I’m not selling fur. And, my dog is here at all times with me. She’s a Chihuahua named Olive. How was opening day? It was wonderful. Women

niche is a woman who loves designer clothes and doesn’t want to spend a lot.

The threads

What are some of the standards you have when you’re looking for pieces? Condition is number one. It all has to be in great condition. But other than that it’s all modern, fun pieces. Things that when girls walk in they look through the rack, they get excited about it. There’s a smattering of vintage in here as well, and that’s exciting. You know, things that are just fun and exciting and fashion forward. Colorful. Stuff that sparks people’s interest. Obviously designer brands. kept coming up to me and saying, “We’ve been waiting for you to come.” There aren’t any boutiques on this side of Southie. They’re all on the east or west sides. I really try to curate the clothing so that everything is modern and in great condition. How about price points? I price things the way I would shop. I’m a bargain hunter. At the end of the day, If

something was priced for $600, no one is going to pay that. I try my best to make everything reasonable, around $25-75. Who’s your target shopper? The best part about consignment is that you cater to everyone. I can cater to a mother and her daughter. Because the consigners are both 20-year-olds and 55and 60-year-olds. You don’t necessarily have niche. The

What are the staple items that you would spend more on, that every woman should have in her closet? Women should always invest in their bag and their shoes. As long as you have a great bag and great shoes, but your dress comes from Forever 21, you’re fine. In the winter of course, it’s your jacket. These are items where luxury shows. With a beautiful, well-made, well-fitting coat it is going to do wonders, and make you look way more amazing than a cheap coat. Some things you can pretend, some things you can’t. Like an $80 T-shirt? Can you really tell that the T-shirt is $80? I don’t think so. Describe your style? I really like high quality clothes, but I guess my style is a little boho. Very relaxed — Boston BOHO. Still clean cut, but like Boston — certainly not like L.A.

VIDEO GAMES THAT GO FOR THE NARRATIVE Video games aren’t exactly known for their stellar storytelling. Finally, the industry is trying to tell tales that are as good as the graphics and action. Here are two valiant attempts.

•••••

It wasn’t so long ago that name actors wouldn’t be caught dead near a video game. Now, games regularly employ, if not Oscar winners, then at least Oscar nominees. In that spirit, “Beyond: Two Souls boasts starring roles from Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe. The “game itself isn’t the most fluid experience you’ll have on the PS3. You clunkily explore environments while participating in timed challenges. However, great motion capture work, voice acting and a stellar script just about make up for the game’s flaws. I liken it to watching a well-done HBO show in which you partially control the action.

Halloween. New apps help parents track trick-or-treaters Parents worried about letting their children go trick-ortreating at Halloween can download new apps that track kids and send alerts when they venture outside designated safe areas. With the free iPhone app Track n Treat, children send a time-limited link of their location via a phone number or email. This then allows parents to track their whereabouts via a web browser for the next four hours. “Kids are out and about and their parents want to know where they are, so Halloween is a great use of a temporary location-sharing technology, says Bryan Trussel, CEO of Seattle-based Glympse, which creates person-to-person location sharing technologies. Another free app, Family GPS Tracker for iPhone and Android, not only lets parents see where their children are in real-time, but also sends alerts

when a child strays outside of a set area. “With the app you can always be aware of where your children are located, and can call them immediately if they venture outside of the safe zone, says Michal Stencl, the CEO of Sygic, which is based in Slovakia. Life360, another free app for iPhone and Android, lets family members view each others’ location on a map and keep in touch via group messaging. The app allows users to set up zones and notifications showing, for example, when a child arrives at school, or when a spouse leaves work or gets home. “We’re trying to build a family graph, Our picks for natural candy

1

Unreal Candy Unreal makes its candy bars with less sugar, grass-fed dairy and all-natural origin colors, using beet and turmeric juice to color their sweets. We tried Unreal’s “The Double One,â€? the brand’s peanut butter cups, and found them to be less salty and less sugary than Reese’s, but still tasty and satisfying. We also liked “The Loaded One,â€? the brand’s take on Snickers, but were divided on “The Gimme Ones,â€? Unreal’s answer to M&Ms. Some of us liked the more intense chocolate avor, but some thought there was a strange aftertaste.

Justin’s Justin’s is famous for its nut butters, but the organic and fair trade brand also makes candy. Most of us preferred Unreal’s peanut butter cups to Justin’s, — Justin’s had a stronger peanut butter avor, whereas Unreal’s chocolate was more of the highlight. We also preferred Unreal’s “The Loaded Oneâ€? to Justin’s milk chocolate peanut candy bar; several Metro staers said Justin’s version tasted like a protein bar and was too chewy.

Endangered Species These natural, Non-GMO Project-veriďŹ ed milk and dark chocolate squares were sweet and simple. All of our staers enjoyed the ethically traded sweets, and kids will

love the festive wrappers.

4

YumEarth Organics These were a sta favorite. YumEarth’s organic gummy bears and worms were a huge hit. We loved the powerful punch of the real pomegranate, strawberry, mango and peach avors and the chewy texture. We also enjoyed the tart and chewy Naturals Sour Beans.

5

Lovely Candy Co. Fruit Chews These fruit-avored soft chews are made with brown rice syrup and real fruit, but they also contain natural avors — a Food Babe no-no. Nonetheless, Hari says they are much healthier than Starbursts: “You’ll automatically save yourself from GMOs and a bunch of petroleumbased food dyes.â€? We’re glad, because these were juicy and addictive, though softer than Starbursts.

6

Alter Eco Trues These trues come in Black and Velvet, and both are sustainable chocolates made with pure coconut oil instead of partially hydrogenated soybean oil. An added bonus? Hari says coconut oil is a “metabolism-boosting fat burner.â€? The chocolates are similar to Lindt trues and the ganache centers are incredibly velvety and rich: One will tide you over for a while.

SCARY HALLOWEEN Eek! Watch out for these five ingredients. Halloween is around the corner, but it’s not just the costumes that are scary. Candy can be full of frightening ingredients that may have long-term health consequences — at least according to Vani Hari, food activist and blogger at FoodBabe.com. These ingredients are derived from anything ranging from beavers’ anal secretions (yup) to wood pulp. Hari says that instead of focusing on the nutrition facts, look closely at ingredient labels for the following red flags.

Trans fat Watch out for trans fat in candy and don’t be fooled if the packaging boasts zero grams. Hari says that if the candy has less than 0.5 grams of trans fat, the company is allowed to write “0 g trans fat on the label. But even in such small quantities, Hari says trans fat

can be harmful. “Even a small amount of partially hydrogenated oil is linked to heart disease, she says. “It hits the arteries hard. Look closely at the ingredients and watch out for any partially hydrogenated oil; common culprits include soybean, corn and canola oils. Snickers is one candy bar that contains trans fat.

Food coloring Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2 and Red 40 are all common ingredients in candies like gummy bears, Sour Patch Kids, Twizzlers and Skittles. The Center for Science in the Public Interest released a study linking these additives to hyperactivity, cancer and allergies. These food dyes require warning labels or are sometimes even banned in other countries, especially in Europe. Hari says she got hundreds of letters from parents who phased out artificial food dyes from their children’s diet. “They told me activity improved, their kids were able to focus and they were good in

Natural flavors “These can be anything under the sun that comes from nature, including beavers’ anal glands,â€? says Hari. Flavor manufacturers are not required to disclose what makes up these “natural avors.â€? Castoreum, which is sometimes used for vanilla, raspberry and strawberry avors, is an unappetizing blend of uids from the castor and anal glands of beavers.

school, says Hari, who started a petition drive on Change.org to remove artificial coloring from Kraft Macaroni & Cheese that already has more than 250,000 signatures.

High fructose corn syrup High fructose corn syrup is the most refined sugar available, and Hari points out that it also

is genetically engineered. She adds that the long-term risks of GMOs are still unknown. “Kids shouldn’t be the guinea pigs, Hari comments. High fructose corn syrup is linked to childhood obesity, heart disease and diabetes. “Your liver cannot process that fructose the way it would a natural sugar from cane juice or fruit juice or fruit, she says.

Vanillin Most mass chocolate producers, like Hershey’s, are skipping real vanilla and are using an artificial ingredient called vanillin instead. Vanillin is made from wood pulp that is oxidized in a lab — and may be carcinogenic. “It’s hard to study what the long-term effects are from eating all of these different things with little bits of carcinogenic compounds in them, says Hari. “But even these minute amounts add up over time.

Nyong’o has her facts wrong

itself? Lupita Nyong’o’s assertion that “America is made of immigrants. The AfricanAmerican slaves came from Africa, the white slave owners were Irish and German and English” isn’t completely accurate. In fact, African-Americans’ position in America is absolutely unique: We are the only people here who DIDN’T immigrate. Also many of us didn’t arrive as slaves, but that’s another subject. And for the actress to make a point of announcing that she is “middle class” was just, well, anything but.

Re: ‘Lupita Nyong’o: Get on the good foot’ (Metro, Oct. 28) Shouldn’t research for the role in a movie on American slavery, as a matter of course, include the history of America Online

There’s a thin line to Chris Brown mockery Re: ‘Chris Brown’s felonious weekend’ (Metro, Oct. 28) Hey y’all, when I see the Metro reporting on what a douche Chris Brown is, I feel glad that at least one media outlet is also holding him accountable for his abusive, violent and controlling behaviors. However, if in the same article, I also see the phrase “go all Chris Brown” and blase refer-

ences to Rhianna’s injuries, I remember that we live in a society that makes light of partner abuse. If we make fun, how will our friends and loved ones know we can be trusted with their struggle? Furthermore, how will abusers know they’ve done wrong? Partner abuse is. not. funny. JOANNA GATTUSO, VIA EMAIL

Even with series lead, no guarantees for Sox MLB. Boston sports fans are ready to party, but they’ve learned not to jump to any conclusions. Boston sports fans were in a similar position to the one they’re in today just a few years back. In June 2010, the Celtics were coming off a thrilling Game 5 victory over the archrival Lakers, and owned a 3-2 series lead in the NBA Finals. There were whispers of a parade and the Auerbach-style cigars were on stand-by, ready to be lit. Unfortunately for Boston fans, the Celtics were throttled in Game 6 in L.A.

and the fatigued bunch let a lead crumble in the second half of Game 7 at the Staples Center. Lesson learned. Don’t get ahead of yourself. There’s more reason for optimism in this current Red Sox scenario, however. First, Games 6 and 7 are in Boston. Second, the Red Sox have looked like the superior team in this series nearly the whole way. In fact, many have already made the case that the series should already be over considering Game 3 ended in questionable fashion, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia tagging Allen Craig at home but not getting the call thanks to the lengthy legs of Will Middlebrooks. The Red Sox are, of course, playing things close to the vest given that the Cardinals

have already won two games in a row in this series and have proven capable of winning at Fenway Park. “Provided we win one more,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said after Monday’s Game 5 victory regarding the excitement of being so close to a World Series crown. “The fact is we’re going home. Going back to a place that our guys love to play in, in front of our fans.

This atmosphere in (St. Louis), these three games have been phenomenal. We know it’s going to be equal to that, if not better (at Fenway). And we’re excited about going home in the position we are.” According to CBS Sports, the previous 62 times a World Series has been at 3-2, the team with the lead has won 66.1 percent of the time (41of-62). Those are pretty good odds. But, counting fried chickens (and beer) before they hatch (or are cracked) is something Boston fans have been taught not to do. The payoff is always sweeter with patience.

Red Sox have ‘found a way’ when facing elite pitching MLB. Boston’s run totals are down dramatically from the regular season, but the Sox have done just enough to grab victories. After six games against the Tigers in the ALCS and five games against the Cardinals in the World Series, the Red Sox have won games when taking on some of the best starting pitchers the game has to offer — Max Scherzer twice, Adam Wainwright twice and Justin Verlander once to now find themselves one win away from winning the World Series. After leading the majors in runs per game in the regular season at 5.27 and beating those elite pitchers this postseason, it would be expected that their offense continued their run production pace from the regular season. But that hasn’t been the case. In the ALCS and World Series, the Sox have averaged just 3.64 runs per game. So, how have they been getting it done? “The character of our team, manager John Farrell said. “The one thing that we’ve seen repeatedly throughout the course of this year is the awareness inside the game, the will to succeed and the desire to compete have been

The one thing that we tried to establish in spring training, the most important thing is the game tonight and how we put together a game plan to win and I think we’re seeing that against top-flight pitching throughout the season. Against the Tigers, it was David Ortiz’s grand slam in the eighth inning of Game 2, which gave the Red Sox the lead after trailing 5-2 and ignited the team for the remainder of the series. In Game 3, the only run of the game was a solo home run from Mike Napoli off of Verlander. Then,

Celtics season opener

Celtics coach Stevens makes NBA debut The Celtics 2013-14 season opener against the Toronto Raptors already was scheduled to come with far less fanfare than the nationally televised season openers of the past few years. Throwing in the fact that the World Series is in town tonight, the new-look Celtics are garnering little buzz around town, but nonetheless they do enter the Brad Stevens era tonight in Canada (7 p.m., CSN). “I think we may lose a few viewers around 8:07, Stevens joked with reporters regarding the Game 6 start time for the Red Sox. An hour earlier, Celtics fans will learn for the first time as to what Stevens’ starting five will be. Avery Bradley is expected to get the start at one of the guard positions. Jordan Crawford or Courtney Lee will likely start in the other slot. Rajon Rondo, of course, is still recovering from an ACL injury from January. Jeff Green and Gerald Wallace are expected to start. Kelly Olynyk and Vitor Faverani were receiving big minutes up front in the preseason. MATT BURKE

in Game 6, Shane Victorino’s seventh inning grand slam turned a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead and an American League pennant. The trend of timely home runs continued in the World Series as with the game tied, 1-1, in the sixth inning of Game 4, Jonny Gomes crushed a three-run homer into the Red Sox bullpen at Busch Stadium, proving to be the game-winner in the 4-2 win. Finally, although it wasn’t a home run, 36-year-old David Ross came through with an RBI double in the seventh inning of Game 6, which broke a 1-1 tie and ultimately gave the Red Sox a 3-1 win and a 3-2 series lead. Coming through with hits when it matters most just goes along with the relentless, never-say-die attitude the Red Sox have had all season long and with that attitude the Sox find themselves just one win away from an improbable worst-to-first World Championship.
