$528M Last year, $528 million in city property taxes weren’t collected due to charitable exemptions extended to nonprofits, according to Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown, who on Thursday announced a hearing to investigate such exemptions. Brown said that when it comes to raising city revenue, increasing wage and corporate taxes threaten to drive businesses out of the city, jeopardizing jobs. “Therefore, for three years in a row, our remaining option on the table has been property taxes,” she said, noting that private property owners shoulder the burden. Exterminator charged in murder of CHOP doc

Jason Smith was arrested for the murder of Melissa Ketunuti, who was strangled and set on fire in her Center City home Monday afternoon Fight escalated as he was servicing home, say police Levittown man has no violent criminal history

Police on Thursday made an arrest in the murder of 35-year-old Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia doctor Melissa Ketunuti, who was on Monday afternoon strangled to death and her body set on fire in the basement of her Center City home. But the development did not provide many answers regarding a motive in the brutal crime. Police said 36-year-old Levittown exterminator Jason Smith, who lacked a violent criminal history, attacked Ketunuti in her basement after the two got into an argument. “She needed an exterminator; she called a certain service, he was subcontracted out,” Capt. James Clark of the Homicide Unit said. “During the course of him servicing her, they got into some type of argument. It went terribly wrong.” He did not say what that argument was about, only that it quickly escalated. “There was a verbal altercation and with that, he struck her,” Clark said. “She went to the ground. He immediately jumped on top of her and started strangling her.”

How police caught the suspect Investigators caught up with Smith following a thorough review of footage from nearby cameras. “They went through hours of surveillance video,” Clark said. “Detectives did an unbelievable job of finding every bit of footage that was in that area. And what we saw was the suspect actually following about 30 seconds behind the decedent down 18th Street and onto Naudain Street, which led us to him.” Clark said police also have video putting Smith at the scene after the crime.

Jason Smith, 36, of Levittown, was taken into custody by Philadelphia Homicide Unit detectives, U.S. Marshals and Bristol police. RIKARD LARMA/METRO

Family traveling to Philadelphia Ketunuti’s parents have been experiencing some difficulty in returning to the country from Thailand, according to Clark, but are currently en route. “We’re glad for the family we’re at least able to give some closure with the arrest of this individual,” he said. District Attorney Seth Williams in a statement echoed Clark’s sentiments. “I would first like to send

my thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and neighbors of Melissa Ketunuti,” he said. “I know their pain must be enormous and I hope that today’s arrest will help ease some of that pain.”

Ketunuti

He said Smith bound Ketunuti’s hands and feet behind her at some point and allegedly strangled her using rope he found in the basement. “We did find rope similar to that in the house,” Clark said, referring to a search of the Levittown home Smith shares with his girlfriend and her young child. Investigators believe he set the body on fire in an attempt to destroy DNA evidence. Smith is charged with murder, abuse of a corpse, arson and risking a catastrophe.

“After the murder, we see him get back in his truck and go down Naudain Street twice,” he said. “And obviously, that led us even more to the suspect.” Smith was brought to the Homicide Unit Wednesday night as a person of interest. “He made a statement to detectives,” Clark said. “And with that statement and other evidence, there’s more than enough for us to charge him.”

Beaten Rangers fan to sue attacker, South Philly bar Neal Auricchio, the Rangers fan who was brutally beaten by a Flyers fan after last year’s NHL winter classic in Philadelphia, announced yesterday that he is filing a civil suit for unspecified damages. Auricchio, an officer with the Woodbridge, New Jersey Police, is seeking compensatory and punitive damages against Dennis Veteri and South Philly Bar and Grill, Inc., where Veteri had signed a $226.70 tab 20 minutes before the assault. While disappointed that Veteri was not sentenced to prison, Auricchio said that he was filing the

The damages

The attacker Veteri, the Flyers fan who assaulted Auricchio, was sentenced in December to house arrest after pleading guilty to simple and aggravated assault and conspiracy.

Auricchio’s New Jersey legal counsel, Raymond Gill Jr., could not put a dollar figure on the damages that Auricchio is seeking because “we still do not know all the medical care that he will need.” He noted that Auricchio still suffers from postconcussion syndrome, which causes headaches, tinnitus, trouble concentrating and memory difficulties. He also needed a

titanium plate inserted to repair the fracture of the left eye’s orbit. Auricchio emphasized that he did not suffer just physical damages in the attack. “The tickets to the Winter Classic and Rangers Jersey were a Christmas gift from my wife,” he noted. “I had a 2-week-old baby home. I was not able to hold him or bathe him for 9 months. I did not trust myself to carry him for a year.”

lawsuit because “fan on fan has become epidemic.” Auricchio, who was awarded the Purple Heart in Iraq, extended his thanks to the city. “I want to thank the Philadelphia Police Department,” he said during the press conference at the office of his Philadelphia counsel, Saltz Mongeluzzi, Barrett, & Bendesky, P.C. “The Philadelphia sports community has been very supportive. I received many e-mails telling me that this is not what Philly sports fans are about.” Laura Goldman letters@metro.us

Council tries again at paid sick leave bill Bill would extend paid sick leave to all Philadelphia workers Health of 2 both employees and public cited Similar legislation was previously vetoed RIKARD LARMA/METRO

Councilman Bill Greenlee on Thursday reintroduced the Healthy Families and Workplaces Bill, which would extend paid sick leave to all Philadelphia workers. “In this economy, we need to make sure that people can afford to stay home when they or a loved one are sick without fear of falling behind on bills or losing their job,” Greenlee said. “No working person in Philadelphia should be forced to choose between their family’s economic security and their family’s health.” Though similar legislation was in 2011 vetoed by Mayor Michael Nutter, who expressed concerns that it would compromise Philadelphia's competitiveness in attracting employers, some business owners said the opposite. “My business operates

Breakdown The bill would allow employees a minimum of one hour of paid sick time for every 40 hours worked, with a mandatory maximum of 56 paid sick hours per year. Workers at businesses that employ between five and 11 employees would earn a mandatory maximum of 32 hours of paid sick time in a year. Businesses with five or fewer employees are exempt from the bill. Connecticut already passed a similar law.

on tight margins, and I’ve found that offering paid sick time to my employees is a policy that boosts my bottom line,” said Lori Davis of Porter’s Childcare

in North Philadelphia. “When one of my employees is sick, I want them to stay home, recover and come back focused and ready to work. Turnover is a huge cost for a business, and training new employees is expensive.” Greenlee said he’s confident there’s enough support among council members for a veto override. “It’s not just a business issue,” he said. “I’m not trying to knock the business and economic issue, but we’ve also got to consider the health issue here. Health is something a lot of people talk about, and I think this is something that is really important to the health not just of the workers, but to the general citizens of Philadelphia.” Alex Wigglesworth

President Barack Obama on Thursday nominated former federal prosecutor Mary Jo White to head the Securities and Exchange Commission, picking a tough enforcement hand who more recently has defended Wall Street figures. White, the former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York known for prosecuting terrorists and mob bosses, would become the third consecutive woman to hold the post. The pick quickly drew praise from both Wall Street and reform advocates who say White would ably steer the powerful agency that plays a key role in overseeing U.S. financial markets.

Women serve in combat roles for the armed forces of a few developed nations, including Canada and Israel.

The Pentagon lifted its ban on women in front-line combat roles on Thursday in a historic step toward gender equality in the U.S. armed forces after 11 years of nonstop war, during which the front lines were often not clearly defined. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, signed an order rescinding the rule that prevented women from serving in direct combat jobs. econd, there is the 2016 presidential race. Yes, I know it is far too early to talk about this. I’d rather take a cheese grater to my scalp. But presidential campaign seasons have steadily expanded in recent decades, so much so that both parties will be triangulating a path to victory the moment the midterm vote is past, if not earlier. That will bring furious attacks on the president from one side of the aisle, and on the other … well, Quoted let’s just say So how long does that the minute the the president next race have to make his heats up, the Capitol mark in this kitchen starts second term? serving lame duck. So how long does the president have to make his mark in this second term? I’ve chatted up some of the best political minds I know, and they put it at about 18 months. Perhaps less. But for all of the president’s grand ambitions to tackle tax reform, immigration and gun laws, a daunting calendar could undermine even his best efforts in the short and long run. First, there are the mid-term elections. In 2014 (that’s right, next year) the Democrats have to defend 20 seats in the U.S. Senate, seven of which are in states that President Obama lost to Governor Romney. Democrats in many of those races, who must win moderate votes to keep their chairs, may be hesitant to stand too close to the president if he tacks left on divisive issues. Peak: Has he stopped peaking? We’ll just say 2006. Scheduled return: He’s got a Super Bowl weekend gig (not the half time show), “Suit and Tie” single is out now and his third album is due later this year. Welcome Back? Yes. A thousand times, yes.

It was 1973, but then again in 1983.

When he posted the new song “Where Are We Now” online late one night this month, many of the people at his label didn’t even have a clue. “The Next Day,” his 24th(!) studio album, drops in March.

Whether he’s the Thin White Duke, Ziggy or just himself, Bowie is the type of artist whose space oddity is always welcome.

21

“Loveless,” their 1991 album, set the tone for the shoegaze movement and basically enabled Smashing Pumpkins to be Smashing Pumpkins.

The follow-up album to “Loveless” is reportedly finished and will be released at some point this year. If you’ve stuck by them for more than two decades, you can wait a few more months.

Though MBV toured in ’07, and were as ear-bleedingly rad as ever, there’s always a fear of a “Chinese Democracy”-type disappointment. But frontman Kevin Shields seems like he’s still on his A-game.

10

They reached such great heights with “Such Great Heights” in 2003.

The re-issue of their only album, “Give Up,” will be released in April, to be followed by a tour.

The song was featured on the “Garden State” soundtrack ... and just about everywhere else.

In 2002, she won the first Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” with Gwen Stefani.

11 8

Her album, “Lip Lock” drops in May.

Welcome back?

Our little twee ears are eagerly awaiting the two new songs that will be included with this album, so yes!

Eve has a scorpion-like sting to her raps and when she released a taste of “Lip Lock” in October with “She Bad Bad,” its dub-step conscious production made it clear she has not spent 11 years under a rock.

The album “Love Songs” is out Tuesday. This reunion seemed like a favor to help get Beyonce’s buddies some extra dough, but now it seems more of a favor they’re doing for her to distract us from that whole Star Scandal Banner thing.

“Survivor,” 2001. Enough said.

Oh bay-bee, Biz had what we neeeeeeed(ed) in 1989. But that song has endured in commercials and on “Always Sunny” and he has enjoyed a second life on “Yo Gabba Gabba” with Biz’s Beat of the Day.

While there is no release date, the rapper says he is in the studio now.

While we can’t say we’ve been exactly clamoring for new material from the Biz, he did recently tell Billboard, “It’s going to be timeless.” So there’s that.

These guys have been putting out albums consistently, but a new joint tour is their most high profile outing since …

“Motown Philly” was everywhere in 1994.

A tour with NKOTB and 98 Degrees kicks off on May 31.

A nostalgia tour is the best move for this creatively sapped crew.

17

“Goody Two Shoes” was a hit in 1982, which is before many of you were even born.

9

Oh baby, youuuuuuu! +

= It’s scheduled for late 2013.

Stateside, Mr. Ant wasn’t ever popular enough to warrant calling this a “comeback.” One slot on a casino-venue nostalgia tour would’ve done it justice. PAT HEALY & HEIDI PATALANO

Now in theaters ‘Movie 43’ In something of an attempt to take on the comedy shorts that have been killing it on sites like Funny or Die and My Damn Channel, the Farrelly brothers produce (and direct a segment of) this collection of vignettes, tied together with the story of three teenagers on a quest to find the most taboo movie of all time. The movie features a staggering amount of celebrities — it’s nice to see this kind of stunt casting applied to something besides a Garry Marshall cheesefest.

‘Parker’ We know, we know: Jason Statham in an action movie might be a little hard to get used to — if you haven't seen the 20-

Still, the British action star is never too hard on the eyes, much like his co-star Jennifer Lopez. The two play scheming thieves in this thriller directed by Taylor Hackford.

‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ Like “Snow White and the Huntsman,” this reinvention of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale gets a gritty update. This time, the siblings who suffered as children at the hands of a candy house-dwelling witch are grown up and ready to avenge the wrongdoings of witches the world over. You know, you’re not supposed to like crooks or criminals. You know, he’s devoted to his girlfriend. There’s something about that, as well. Crooks and criminals usually haven’t got many morals. It’s interesting, that girlfriend character, since you also have Jennifer Lopez in the movie and people would assume, you two together onscreen ...

Do you consider this in the same vein as things like “The Mechanic” and “The Italian Job,” putting a modern spin on older action material? Josh Duhamel stars in “Movie 43.”

I mean, to categorize myself in the same breath as Stallone and Arnold is a little bit beyond me, but I love their movies. I’m a big action movie junkie, and it’s great to be making action movies. I think it’s still the strongest genre and always has been. I think it gets a bad name for itself sometimes because sometimes they’re a bit thin on story. ... ilmmakers refer to it as “magic hour — the time of day when the last rays of sunlight bathe the landscape in a vibrant, golden glow. Dancer/choreographer Meg Foley takes the elusive beauty of twilight as a point of departure for her new piece, “The whole time in the meanwhile, which sees its world premiere in a series of late-af-

ternoon performances this weekend. Foley created the piece with composer/guitarist Chris Forsyth and lighting designer Lenore Doxsee. The goal for the collaborators was to create an immersive environment for their audience. “We’re creating an environment that provides literal and figurative space for the viewer to reflect on

what happens inside of it, Foley says. “We can’t make the audience do anything, but we can work with light and sound as tangible, physical material and with shifting viewpoints, illuminating different areas of the room and highlighting the passage of time as creative materials. The inspiration for this environment, according to Foley, came from her own

desire to step inside other performers’ work. “In the past few years I’ve increasingly found myself wanting to be inside the performances that I see, she says. “From my safe seat in the dark, I feel so far from what is transpiring, as if my body is just my eyes and ears.

‘Spartacus’ beats The epic tale of rebellion enters its final episodes Liam McIntyre talks about stepping into the warrior’s sandals for two seasons

B

ehind the stylized violence and impressively choreographed sex scenes that have made “Spartacus the Starz network’s must-see guilty pleasure is the story of a broken man fighting against all odds to regain respect and an everyman suffocating under Roman rule. For the past two seasons, Liam McIntyre has brought the legend of the title character to life: from suffering the pain of his wife’s murder to seeking vengeance and bringing down an empire that thrived on the degradation of men. As this swordsand-sandals epic enters its final season, McIntyre reflects on the journey of playing such an iconic character.

How has Spartacus come into his own as a leader?

A lot of his drive has been from the love and loss that he’s suffered. Now he has a new cause: He has all these people who look to him. His leadership skills have grown through his campaign and through his experience. His generals have supported him, and his numbers have grown in stature and strength. All that’s left for him is this ultimate victory against Rome that will give the people their freedom. He realizes he won’t have his life, but he can give other people theirs. Spartacus is told that he’s beginning to resemble a god to the people. How does that sit with him?

Yeah, it doesn’t sit very well. He’s not that kind of

guy. He’s been trapped in this massive war that’s so far beyond anything he’d ever expected. He’s fighting the odds in a very strong sense of the word. Because he’s having so much success, to these people, he’s like a savior to them. He’s actually doing it — the impossible — which is to start beating back Rome and earn people their freedom. Did you play the role of leader on the set?

It’s funny that life imitates art. The producers sat me down and said, “Now you’re the lead. You have to lead by example in every way. You’ve gotta be on time, you’ve gotta make sure people are doing their job. I’m like, “Wow, this is a much bigger job than I thought. [Laughs] As the

Q&A What were those last days of filming like? I remember Andy Whitfield [who originated the role of Spartacus, but died in 2011] told me that the team at “Spartacus” was like a giant family. He was absolutely right. I was watching the last episode and doing DVD commentary on it a couple days ago.

show progressed, it just became a natural thing. I’m not a boring guy, but I’m pretty straight laced. Spartacus tries to keep everyone on the straight and narrow and the right path. I guess, in a weird way, that’s the role I ended up having on set as well. I’d be the guy who would try to rally the troops as best I could.

Weekend recipe

Game plan If you’re using chicken breasts for this recipe, cut them in half crosswise before putting them in the marinade so they’ll cook at the same rate as the rest of the chicken pieces.

Asianmarinated baked chicken Spending a few minutes preparing a handful of ingredients for a marinade gives this dish tons of flavor, plus the bonus of a built-in sauce after the chicken is cooked. Just combine soy sauce, ginger, garlic and a little brown sugar in a baking dish, add the chicken, and let it marinate in the fridge overnight. When you’re ready to cook it, put the whole dish in the oven, and in forty minutes you’ll have crispy, saucy, flavorful chicken. (Note: If you’re using a glass or ceramic baking dish, do not skip step 3 where you bring it up to room temperature before baking, or else your dish could crack!) New couple alert? Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn

@cialwalls I don’t care if she lipsynced. It was still her voice and talent. There are more important things to worry about.

@GossipTidbits Live singing at #inaugurations is expected! Aretha Franklin, Kelly Clarkson rocked out live! Lip-syncing feels deceptive @therealjerry Nope. Do not care. Celebs/musicians do it all the time at other events, like sports, so its not a big deal at all to me. @v0xtheriot if she can fake her baby bump she can fake her singing. Seriously though, most celebs lip sync. This is old news @sarrible Beyonce gets to do whatever she wants.

Speidi set sail for England Watch out, England. Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are taking their nonsense across the pond, according to the Daily Star. The couple, who were surprisingly unknown in the country before a starring role in “Celebrity Big Brother 11,” have apparently enraptured the country with their vapid (yet strangely alluring) brand of reality TV vitriol. “Speidi have been TV gold on ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ and are clearly no fans of the British,” a source told the Daily Star. “It makes perfect sense for them to bag their own explosive series here.” According to the pa-

per, the two will travel around the country making fun of the British people they encounter. Poor England. They give us Judi Dench, Adele, Ian McKellen, Daniel Day Lewis and Dame Edna — and we're returning the favor with Heidi and Spencer. They’re probably pretty pleased about how the Revolutionary War panned out by this point.

Tiger Woods is reportedly seeing Lindsey Vonn, inset.

According to the new issue of Star, golfer Tiger Woods and Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn are being all sorts of athletic together — in bed. The magazine reports the two have been playing kissy face since November and have even gone on a vacation to Antigua together. The magazine also says this is a great match as

Woods has a thing for blondes. (Editor’s note: He also has a thing for redheads, and brunettes and,

well, any woman, ever.) So, following the laws of tabloid magazines, this means they are totally going to end up married. “He wants to marry again,” an insider tells Star, “and thinks Lindsey could be the woman.” Which leads us to ask: How is Vonn’s aim at SUV windows?

Honestly? England can keep ’em. GETTY IMAGES

Talking points Lohan’s latest rejected by SXSW, Sundance Lindsay Lohan’s latest bid at a big-screen comeback is having trouble getting off the ground. Her racy and controversial film “The Canyons” was rejected by the Sundance Film Festival earlier this month, and now it appears the South by

Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, wants nothing to do with the film either, according the Hollywood Reporter. Sources say the film suffers from significant “quality issues” and has “an ugliness and a deadness to it.”

“House of Lies” star kept coy with a “maybe” when pressed. Bell had said that fiance Dax Shepard was looking forward to “all the off-roading he’ll have in this tiny partner,” but she says that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be a daughter. “Do you have to be a boy to off-road? Absolutely not!” Bell said.

Is Bell having a boy or a girl?

now she’s going on the attack by chastising Rihanna for the messages the pop singer sends young fans with her behavior. “I just think about how many little girls beyond what I could even comprehend are obsessed with Rihanna,” Dunham tells Alec Baldwin during a chat for his “Here’s the Thing” podcast. “She gets back together with Chris Brown and posts a million pictures of them smoking marijuana together on a bed. And it cracks my heart in half.”

Experiments in intimacy

+

David Hartley’s latest release as Nightlands was created out of his fascination with an eight-track recorder ‘Machinery is just a way to get to something more intimate,’ says the War on Drugs member who also happens to be a local artist GETTY IMAGES

Fishtown composer David Hartley (aka Nightlands) nearly named his latest album “Experiments With Tape Speed,” but later found that title far too clinical. While the 10 tracks on “Oak Island” are indeed created out of his fascination with the simple manipulation of an eight-track recorder, to think of “Island” as a purely technical experiment would be to miss the point entirely. Far from a detached process, Nightlands is fueled by Hartley’s desire to transcend his own analytical nature. “I still don’t understand how other songwriters work. For me, writing a song has to be synced into the recording process or it never gets written,” says Hartley. “If I sit down to write a song on the guitar, I get too far into self-reflection. For me that becomes an opening for doubt. If I can just trick myself into thinking I’m like a child at play with the equipment, I can banish the negative thoughts.” Hartley’s life has changed considerably

Songza ‘Girls’

Some girls think all the best rock ‘n’ roll was made between 1965 and 1984. Jessa is one of those girls. Or perhaps we should say she’s one of those “Girls.” The playlist at www.songza.com/ listen/girls-jessa-songza is inspired by the character on the HBO show, as are the other three lists for other “Girls” characters.

since Nightlands’ 2010 debut, “Forget the Mantra,” due mostly to the success of his other band, the War On Drugs. Over the past year, WOD has played larger venues, and even found their way onto the stages of Jimmy Fallon and David Letterman. But Hartley is not the songwriter in

Little bites The Holland Tunnel at Fiume Fiume, the cozy, understated bar located on 45th and Locust, just above the superb Ethiopian restaurant Abyssinia, has the most impressive and affordable whiskey list in Philadelphia — not to mention an awesome selection of bottled beer. And the bar plays fantastic music: We heard Ray Charles and Wire during a recent visit. In the past few months, Fiume’s been stepping up its cocktail game, too, with an emphasis on whiskey drinks. One of the best is the Holland Tunnel, sold for $10. Cleverly named after guitar-picking barman Kevin Holland, it includes Rittenhouse Rye, Carpano Antica vermouth and a mix of ramazotti, angostura and black walnut bitters over a large rock. One will definitely

enlighten you, but three will make you float.

We don’t have many worthwhile brunch spots in West Philly. But we do have the Clark Park Farmer’s Market, open every Saturday. If you’re typically too hungover to purchase fresh ingredients at the farmers market and make brunch, luckily

there are food trucks around. Among them is Yumtown, which serves several spectacular sandwiches. We prefer the pork belly breakfast sandwich: a thin slice of seared belly with two fried eggs, cheddar cheese and kale. If that’s too rich for you, try the Joy: beer-braised pulled pork with pickled jalapenos. And, even if you’re not a vegetarian, order the Edgar Allen Potato. ELLIOTT SHARP

t first glance, leaving behind a brickand-mortar restaurant in favor of a food truck seems like a backslide. But after speaking with chef Michael Falcone, owner of the for-sale Funky Lil’ Kitchen in Pottstown, you’ll see the appeal of life on the road. When he finally gets his wheels, he’s going to name his new mobile kitchen Heart — because that’s where the best cooking comes from.

open a food truck instead?

Right now we don’t have the truck because we wanted to do one thing at a time. The restaurant is up for sale, and once that sells hopefully we’ll swing right into buying the truck. What’s appealing about the nomad lifestyle?

Pottstown’s great and all, but we’re hoping you’re parking in Philly.

Yeah, we’ll be in with all the other trucks by Penn and Drexel, and we’ll go to 33rd Street. Maybe we’ll go to Love Park from time to time. We’re going to split our time between Philly and Pottstown because of who we’ve met over the years. We know some great farmers, and we don’t want to lose touch. Julia West

Washington: Our most misquoted president?

Andrew Criscione offers a quote from George Washington about the supposed need for a free people to arm themselves as a protection from abuse, even from their own government, and then follows that with a general quote, from the Militia Act of 1792, about all white males being part of the militia. What Criscione neglects to say is: In 1794, George Washington called various militias into federal service to suppress the Whisky Rebellion, which involved an insurrection against perceived government abuse. As for the “militia,” the offered quote merely defines who can serve in one. ... In any event, the Act has been radically changed — first in 1862 and then most notably in 1903, which abolished the concept of the militia as it was known in 1789. Criscione also seems to suggest that Washington praised the concept of armed rebellion against the government of which he was president. It seems to me that, if the writer wants to talk about a “crash course,” he should be the first one to take it.

RE: “WASHINGTON WANTS YOU FOR THE UNITED STATES MILITIA” (METRO, JAN. 24) Letter writer

Andrew Criscione is the one who needs a crash course: He claims Washington said, “A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.” It’s a great quote; too bad Washington never actually said it. The actual quote is, “A free people ought not only to be armed but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well digested plan is requisite: And their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories, as tend to render them independent on others, for essential, particularly for military supplies” (First Annual Message to Congress 1790). Doesn’t have quite the same tone as the bogus quote you mentioned, Andrew. I hope the next time you come across a quote attributed to the founding fathers that

The Sixers aren’t only hurting in the standings. The ownership group is also feeling it in their wallets. According to Forbes magazine, the Sixers rank No. 22 out of 30 NBA teams in value. The franchise is worth $314 million, or 5 percent less than last season. For the record, the L.A. Lakers top Forbes’ list at a value of $900 million. Unfortunately for the Sixers, the decline is affecting ticket sales. Seats in the Upper bowl were going for as low as two cents, per StubHub. Metro found a ticket in the Upper Corner (row 209) for Monday’s game vs. Memphis selling for 95 cents on StubHub.

The Sixers will embark on a season-long, eight-game homestand beginning Saturday night against the Knicks. That’s good news, right? Well, maybe in previous seasons. The Sixers are a pedestrian 11-10 at home and just 17-25 overall, 3.5 games behind the Boston Celtics for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. After the Knicks’ game, the Sixers will host the Grizzlies, Wizards, Kings, Magic, Pacers, Bobcats and Clippers. There’s a mix of good teams and bad teams, but this much has become certain this season: The Sixers can’t overlook anyone. Nothing has come easy after last year’s improbable run to the Eastern Conference semifinals. It’s blatantly obvious that the Sixers need Andrew Bynum. If the All-Star center returns with healthy knees by the All-Star break (Feb. 15-17) the Sixers could receive a huge lift. But there are no guarantees. They can’t afford too many subpar performances or they’ll be out of the playoff hunt by the time Bynum returns. The players are keenly aware. They don’t want to keep falling behind by double digits, but that’s what has transpired in too many games recently. “We have to come out with energy in the first quarter,” forward Thaddeus Young said. “We have to get off to better starts. I don’t know why it keeps happening. We talk about it all the time. We just have to do it. We have to come with the energy,

otherwise we’re down 10 just like that. It’s hard to keep playing uphill, and we know that as players. Hopefully we’ll be able to get that turned around fast.” In addition to quicker starts, the Sixers need to recapture momentum at home. The fans are clamoring for things to cheer about on some maddening nights. This eight-game stretch at home is the perfect opportunity to make up some lost ground in the playoff standings. “The fans are so great here and we need to give them reasons to cheer early,” said guard Nick Young. “They’re behind us all the way. I think if we can have a great homestand, they’ll be energized and so will we. We know how important this next group of games is for our season and where we want to go.” Andy Jasner

Are the Phillies finished with their offseason shopping after adding Delmon Young to their outfield? Last week, CBS columnist Jon Heyman reported that the Phillies could be interested in free agent Ryan Theriot in case Chase Utley misses significant time for the third straight spring. Theriot is a reliable utility infielder. The prankster, who goes by the nickname, ‘The Riot,’ would welcome a move to Philly. “Who wouldn’t want to play for the Phillies, Theriot told Metro from his Louisiana home. “I would be more than fine with that. I love Charlie Manuel. You have a great ballpark and great fans. Theriot knows something about winning, too, since he earned World Series rings in 2011 with St. Louis and in 2012 with San Francisco.

“I think the Phillies are going to be very tough next season, Theriot said. “They have the best pitching staff in baseball. They have a very good chance to win next season. Just watch. Will Theriot be part of that winning? “We’ll see what hap-
