Amendment to the Constitution, I think the freedom to own and bear arms had the premise that those weapons would be used in a rational and responsible manner, one that did not jeopardize the safety and security of fellow, law-abiding citizens. In light of our increasing rate of addictions to alcohol, drugs, pain killers and other prescription medicines, not to mention the myriad of other social debilitations which contribute to irrationality and irresponsibility, the public is justified in doubting the sanctity of the earlier premise. A high-powered assault weapon with an extended magazine in the hands of a dysfunctional person is a devastatingly destructive combination. We can no longer be dogmatic about the Second Amendment the way literal evangelicals are dogmatic about the creation, ignoring opposing data and evidence.

Letters Eat rabbit food, not rabbit stew RE: “SO YOU WANT TO GO VEGAN IN 2013?” (METRO, JAN. 16) As a physician, I

was delighted to see attention finally being paid to the health benefits of a vegan/vegetarian diet. Never has it been easier to explore non-meat options and alternatives, and even die-hard meat eaters are enjoying readily available products such as Garden and Morningstar Farms. I have long urged my patients to consider decreasing or eliminating the amount of meat they eat — not just to benefit their own health, but also to help impact the negative effects of a meatbased diet on wildlife, the environment and world hunger. Last but certainly not least is the amount of animal suffering that can be reduced by enjoying just a few vegetarian/vegan meals a week. There are certainly many reasons to “go vegan,” and there has never been a better time. PATRICE GREEN, MD,
