BROOKLYN. People affected by Superstorm Sandy waited at an aid distribution

site yesterday in Brooklyn. Aid was distributed to Red Hook residents by Catholic charities at the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary church. The waterfront area in Brooklyn was hit hard by Sandy, and many lost power. Meanwhile, a nor’easter storm plunged temperatures to below freezing, bringing more misery to many Red Hook residents still without electricity, heat or running water in their public housing apartments. Governor fires state official NEW YORK. Gov. An-

drew Cuomo fired a top official after learning he had government workers clear a tree from his yard during the frenzied rescue efforts of Hurricane Sandy. According to reports, Steven Kuhr, the director of the state’s Office of Emergency Management, asked to have a tree taken out of his driveway. “When we found out about it, we fired him immediately,” a Cuomo aide told the Daily News. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, New Yorkers have stepped forward to offer one another a hand. But law enforcement officials warn that some of those hands might be reaching into your pocket. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is cracking down on opportunists looking to make a quick buck. A source familiar with the investigation confirmed to Metro that the attorney general has subpoenaed Craigslist in the hunt for people trying to peddle necessities like generators and fuel at inflated prices. In ads still posted on the site Thursday, sellers were asking for anywhere between $10 to $100 per gallon of gas. Another post offered a plastic gas can “with or without gas” for $150. Hundreds of New Yorkers have complained about vendors jacking up prices for es-

Queens residents line up for gas.

Brooklyn gougers Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes also weighed in on the disturbing trend Thursday, saying a special grand jury will investigate cases of price gougers and scam artists accused of taking advantage of

storm victims. “The sad truth about a tragedy is that while it brings out the very best in people, it can also bring out the worst,” Hynes said. “To raise the price of a hotel as people seek emergency shelter is just unconscionable.”

NEW YORK. A state appeals court upheld official misconduct charges against two officers acquitted in a rape trial. The two police officers were convicted of misconduct for returning to a woman’s house after heling her home. Kenneth Moreno was sentenced to one year, and Franklin Mata was sentenced to 60 days. Gas rationing starts Friday Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed an emergency order Thursday that will require New Yorkers to get gasoline by their license plate number. He said he hopes the system will reduce lines for gas, which have been blocks long in many parts of the boroughs. He added that the system is “the best way to cut down the lines and help customers buy gas faster.” Starting at 6 a.m. Friday, vehicles with license plates ending in an even number or the number zero can get gas on even-numbered days. Vehicles with license plates ending in an odd number can make gas purchases on odd-numbered days. Cars with licenses plates ending in a letter or other character can make purchases on odd-numbered days. Cabs, commercial vehicles, emergency vehicles and buses are exempt. METRO/AB

In the news Weiner returns to Twitter account NEW YORK. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, former congressman Anthony Weiner has risen to the occasion by taking to his dormant Twitter

account to help raise awareness. Weiner hadn’t tweeted since June 2011, right after he became embroiled in a racy photo scandal that would eventually lead him to step down from office. Weiner, who welcomed a son with wife Huma Abedin last December, has kept a low profile in New York since the public gaffe where he tweeted a photo of his own crotch. Several women came forward after that claiming

to have had explicit online communications with him. Thursday, he returned to Twitter to post a YouTube link for a short video that showed the devastation left by Sandy in the Rockaways. The tweet did not include any text from Weiner. METRO/CG

Superstorm Sandy caused an estimated $50 billion in damages and economic losses for the Northeast, with New York state sustaining $33 billion in damages, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday. “That is a staggering number,” Cuomo said. He also said that storm damage to the electricity distribution system in the Northeast exposed deep flaws in the structure and regulation of power utilities that will require a complete redesign. “We’re going to have to look at a ground-up redesign,” Cuomo said while criticizing utilities he said were virtual monopolies run by nameless and faceless bureaucrats. Thursday more than 285,000 homes were without power. REUTERS

STRETCH. STRENGTHEN. AS YOU GET OLDER, SMART MOVES TO MAKE. BUT DON’T FORGET TO VACCINATE. ZOSTAVAX® (Zoster Vaccine Live) is available at certain pharmacies and medical practices. Talk to your health care professional or visit FINDZOSTAVAX.com for more information. Now’s the time to help prevent Shingles with ZOSTAVAX. ZOSTAVAX is a vaccine that helps prevent Shingles in adults 50 years of age or older. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The virus stays in your body and can resurface at any time as Shingles—a painful, blistering rash. And no matter how healthy you feel, your risk increases as you get older. The sooner you get vaccinated with ZOSTAVAX, the better your chances of protecting yourself from Shingles. In fact, the ACIP* of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends that appropriate adults 60 years of age and older get vaccinated to help prevent Shingles.

Talk to your health care professional to see if ZOSTAVAX is right for you. ZOSTAVAX is given as a single shot. ZOSTAVAX cannot be used to treat Shingles, or the nerve pain that may follow Shingles, once you have it. For more information, visit ZOSTAVAX.com or call 1-877-9 SHINGLES.

Iranian warplanes fired at an unarmed U.S. drone in international airspace last week but did not hit the aircraft, the Pentagon said on Thursday, an unprecedented incident that triggered a sharp warning to Tehran through diplomatic channels. The Pentagon said the Nov. 1 intercept appeared to be the first time Tehran has fired at an unmanned American aircraft, in this case an MQ-1 “Predator.” According to details provided by the Pentagon, two Iranian SU-25 “Frogfoot” aircraft intercepted the American drone at about 4:50 a.m. ET as it conducted a routine, but classified, surveillance mission about 16 nautical miles off the Iranian coast. Giffords’ husband blasts gun lobby as Loughner sentenced GETTY IMAGES

Former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords stood in federal court to face her would-be assassin on Thursday moments before he was sentenced to life in prison for killing six people and wounding 13 others, including Giffords, last year. Jared Loughner, 24, a college dropout with a history of psychiatric disorders, received seven consecutive life terms plus 140 years in prison, without the possibility of parole, under a plea deal with prosecutors that spares him the death penalty. U.S. District Judge Larry Burns said the life sentences he imposed — one for each of the six people who lost their lives and a seventh for the attempted assassination of Giffords — represented the individuality of the victims. “He will never have the opportunity to pick up a gun and

fords’ husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, told Loughner he had failed in his attempt to “extinguish the beauty of life.” Kelly took a political swipe at Republican Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, a staunch gunrights advocate, criticizing her for speaking out against proposed restrictions on high-capacity ammunition magazines, like the ones Loughner used, in the aftermath of the shooting. Director Sam Mendes on missteps of the Bond franchise “The thing about Bond for me is that there was a point around ‘Moonraker’ where it lost some of its thriller roots and went into a sort of action-adventure, almost travelogue type of feeling,” Mendes admits. “He almost, from that moment on, had no journey at all. I’m being unfair to some of the movies in between, but I felt like in ‘Casino Royale,’ Bond was back at the center of the movie. He actually had a journey, he had some emotional stake. So to try to find that kind of personal weight in the center of the movie was really important.”

HERO

Daniel Craig is back as Bond in ‘Skyfall’ But he doesn’t like running, isn’t impressed by gadgets and refers to stunts as ‘bulls— boxing’ James Bond: skilled assassin, notorious ladies’ man and ... professional kvetch? It seems that way when we meet Daniel Craig, star of the new “Skyfall.” In the 23rd Bond adventure, directed by Sam Mendes (“American Beauty”), Bond hits Macau and Shanghai and battles a villain (Javier Bardem) who’s tech-savvy and dangerously flirtatious. Meanwhile, MI6 boss M (Judi Dench) is under threat in an exploding London. Mixing old-school Bond theatrics with a new-school look, this sounds like fun — right, Daniel? “I had to do a lot of running in this movie, which I hate,” Craig says, grimacing. “I end up doing a day’s filming which on paper should look fairly easy. I don’t have any dialogue. It says, ‘Bond goes from to A to B, then he goes from B to C.’ But he goes from A to B at a lick, he runs down the stairs, he runs up the stairs, and we have to do 10 takes at a time, so by the end of it I’m just [gasping].”

“Bond,” he summarizes, “doesn’t usually walk through a room.” No doubt. “Skyfall” is filled with adventure, including an underwater fight sequence that Craig enjoyed — between takes. “Nobody can find you when you’re underwater,” he says. “When we’re not shooting, I swim to the bottom — it’s a huge, great big tank at Pinewood [Studios, in the U.K.], about 30 feet deep. And I just sink to the bottom, put the res-

Bond on Bond So what makes Daniel Craig happy? Really, truly happy? Being Bond. Being an icon. “I suppose I was concerned about being typecast,” he says, “but when you weigh it up it’s not a bad thing to be typecast as James Bond, is it really?” He laughs, finally. “I can say that now — it’s easier now.”

And then you hear a voice saying, ‘Where’s Daniel?’” So action sequences aren’t Craig’s cup of tea. “I’m not a fighter,” either, he adds. “I pretend to be one, but it’s called bulls— boxing,” he says of the stunt work. Perhaps he’s more interested in another aspect of a Bond movie that fans eagerly anticipate: the new gadgetry. Q (played by Ben Whishaw) is reintroduced in this film, and the villain (Javier Bardem) is into computers. Surely, Craig can relate? Nope. “People talk about gadgets all the time, but if you look at the original gadgets ... Bond took out a box, stuck it on a door and pressed a button and a red light came on,” he says. “That’s kind of sexy. It did something. But to have Bond at a computer, on a screen, I think is f---ing boring.” NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

It’s Bond ... again This solid 007 offering succeeds at bringing out the best in the franchise, but some of the conventions of Bond are beginning to seem dated and tiresome

Things get strangely steamy in this little mano a mano. SONY PICTURES PUBLICITY

There are certain things that must always be preserved if one is to make a James Bond film. The shortlist includes many drinks thoughtfully sipped, a couple exotic and conflicted women, at least one gadget and three non-Western locations. There’s also the occasional cheeky one-liner and a steamy shower sequence. These are the things that define the character and the franchise. Changing those elements would be turning it into something it’s not. That’s why we can’t really begrudge the continued presence of all of these elements in each and every film. But as a result of their inclusion, it’s doubtful director Sam Mendes’ vision of 007 would ever be referred to as “refreshing.” And

If you go ‘Skyfall’

Director: Sam Mendes Cast: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Judi Dench Rating: PG-13 Grade: –—˜™š

considering author Ian Fleming’s character is considered a British national treasure, a complete reimagining of Bond would be unthinkable. But Mendes does his best to put a new sheen on Daniel Craig’s character. We find our hero broken down, weak and bitter. Both he and M (Judi Dench) are beginning to be seen as dinosaurs in their own organization, outmoded by

hackers like the evil Silva (Javier Bardem) who effortlessly invades their fortress. Silva is ruthless, flamboyant and flirtatious. He’s easily the most enjoyable aspect of the film — with Bardem disappearing into the role and inviting humor into what would otherwise be stale territory. Taken at face value, however, this is a good movie. The action sequences are heart-stopping. Craig effectively portrays a man mourning the loss of some of his faculties. And Dench, well, you know how that diva rolls. “Skyfall” is a quality product. It’s only that some of us would like to try a new brand. HEIDI PATALANO heidi.patalano@metro.us

The life of a Bond Girl Berenice Marlohe is the latest temptress of the world’s most famous MI6 agent She compares her experience on the set of ‘Skyfall’ to what previous Bond girls have said about their roles

B

erenice who? You’re forgiven if you don’t recognize the name of the latest Bond Girl — the French actress, 33, is known, if at all, for a few TV roles in France. She didn’t break out until moving to Los Angeles, where she was cast as the latest baddie in “Skyfall.” We got her on the phone for a little girl talk. When you got the part, did you think, “Wow, I’m a Bond Girl, I

must be superhot.”

Not at all. I find that kind of reaction really stupid. I’m amazed at how people think they can judge me as an actress based on the pictures they have seen of me. It’s very disturbing when people assume becoming a Bond Girl is a beauty contest. It really isn’t. I’m an actress. I auditioned for the part. The Bond girl is a concept. So when people ask me how it feels to be one, I have trouble taking it all in. Maybe the fact I got to inter-

Q&A

Girl power Bond Girl Barbara Bach (“The Spy Who Loved Me”) called Bond “a chauvinist pig who uses girls to shield him against bullets.” Is that true? I’m the one who had to protect our darling Bond in “Skyfall.” He used to be a bit of a player but he’s become more subtle when seducing women. His character would be a little bit grotesque had he never evolved.

Severine (Berenice Marlohe), leads Bond to her evil master.

pret such a mythical role will hit me in a few years time. Let’s look at what former Bond Girls have had to say. Eva Green — of “Casino Royale”— told one newspaper that she fought to keep her clothes on in the shower scene, saying, “They wanted me to strip down to my panties. We had a good fight about that.” You, on the other hand, seem to have no problem getting naked.

Well you can’t see very much! So you didn’t say: “I don’t want to be naked in the shower.”

“A GREAT AMERICAN MOVIE.”

#1

Definitely. The James Bond played by Daniel Craig is extremely complex. He’s funny, sensitive, strong and courageous. ... The combination of his virility, vulnerability and sense of humor are all magic ingredients. I could fall in love with a Bond like that. He’s also got a really pretty little swimsuit. ROMINA MCGUINNESS METRO WORLD NEWS IN LONDON

I’m not very comfortable with nudity, so initially I wasn’t exactly thrilled. … I asked my agent — “What do we do with this? How naked do I need to be?” A Bond Girl is a combination of power — of masculinity, femininity and animality. I probably could have been like, “Do I really need to get naked?” but I don’t think anyone cared. It was more about the substance of the performance.” Did Daniel Craig get naked?

Could you fall for a man like Bond?

No, he had special privileges you see. He got to wear a little swimsuit — not the blue one from “Casino Royale.” Neither of us were completely naked. Is James Bond a good kisser?

Yes! Not only is he a good kisser, he’s also handsome and strong. Former Bond girl Jill St. John (“Diamonds Are Forever”) said: “It’s not easy being a Bond woman. You have to stay in shape when you’re in a bikini all those months.” Can you

relate to that?

Nobody pressured me to be a certain weight. But the thing is, I have a huge appetite. I’m not one of those women who are like, “I eat loads!” when in fact they eat nothing but salad. Eating is one of my greatest passions in life. So yes, I had to force myself to go out for a run every once in a while, because if I’d listened to myself I’d have been perfectly happy staying in watching movies and eating.

I will never reveal what they are. They are mine, they belong to me — a little like what Mary Todd felt about Mr. Lincoln. She burnt many of his letters. ... But I will talk about the texts. It was so

wonderful and so funny, a lot of it. ... You know, we were texting, but as precisely Mr. Lincoln and precisely Mary Todd as we could manage. In the middle of last summer, he took to sending me limericks, and I would answer him by being critical. You know, “Is this the way you spend your time?” And criticize his lack of intelligence and his use of language. [Laughs] It seems daunting to apply that manner of language to typing with your thumbs on a phone.

Yeah. It was really hard to do. It was helped by the fact that I was in the midst of research. ... And also [screenwriter] Tony [Kushner]’s words were already being imprinted on my head, so I had some sense of the use of the language. Have you ever done anything like that with a co-star before?

You know, I have never done a role that’s this intense and

Field explained to Metro that she developed and maintained her relationship with Day-Lewis while portraying Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln by text-messaging each other in character. “Daniel started it, I didn’t do it,” she explains. “We texted each other since I had the role, which had been seven months or something.”

Mary Todd Lincoln looks distraught — must’ve been that vague text she got from the hubby.

Field vowed to keep the texts to herself, but she did give us a taste of one such message, sent shortly before Day-Lewis began filming: “I know that the task before you is an enormous one, but my task is you. And that is my sole task. And so therefore I will be on your porch tomorrow. Your choice is to let me in or not. And whether you let me in or not, I will not go. In lieu of a carriage, find your shoes.”

emotional and connected to one human being and never have any rehearsal. ... So many of the scenes that you see between Mary and Mr. Lincoln are literally walk on-set and do it. ... But we had done so much work, he and I, and I think we both have enough miles in the saddle and the bubble that was created for us by Steven and by him to stay immersed in this world. ... The [biggest] difficulty is owning the language.

Four seems to be the magic number for small, tightly orchestrated dramas recently. Two examples that come to mind are Broadway’s current “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf ? and “Grace. In that same neck of the woods, “Bad Jews brings a foursome that fills up the stage and packs a whammy. Similar, too, is the nature of this dark comedy, where the sharpest humor follows quickly on the heels of the show’s lowest blows. With a title like “Bad Jews, it could just as easily be a show that banks on stereotypes and kitsch. But Roundabout Underground instead brings audiences a play that’s thoughtful and fully formed. It invites you to take sides as you begin to compare the figures involved to members of your own family — whether or not you’re Jewish (or even Jew-ish). As a world-

With a new album and a new job at one of the leading labels, the man beneath the hat says he is realizing every dream

‘In My Own Words’ Ne-Yo says that although he enjoys performing, what has always been more important to him is that he actually has a song that’s worth performing. “At 9, I discovered the beauty of songwriting,” he says. “I didn’t know if I was going to be an artist. I didn’t know if I was going to play an instrument. But I knew it was going to be music.”

But even with a full plate, he says he is focused on making sure his newly released set “R.E.D.” — which stands for “Realizing Every Dream” — is a success. “I started setting a lot of dreams and aspirations for myself,” he says about his childhood. “I wanted to win Grammys. I wanted the respect and appreciation of my peers. I wanted to travel the world behind my music and provide for my family. I can honestly say that from [the age of] 9 until now, at 33 years old, just about every dream I set for myself has been realized through

The result is an album equally useful in the bedroom as it is in the club. The singer/songwriter has been outspoken about the lack of passion in today’s R&B. Yet even with his criticism, he is quickly able to point to a few artists that get him going. “I love what Frank Ocean is doing with the R&B right now,” he says. “He definitely has a

I hadn’t listened to ‘Chapter V’ yet,” he says of Songz’s latest work. “He is putting the passion back in it. His performance is definitely there.” With his new role at Motown, Ne-Yo hopes to be able to do just that. He also says he likes the idea of being a part of history. “I’d like to be instrumental in the revitalization of Motown,” he says. “And more importantly ... I’d like to be able to take the knowledge that I have acquired and pass it down.” G. VALENTINO BALL letters@metro.us

The supermodel will host the 2012 MTV European Music Awards in Frankfurt this Sunday We chat with her about the pressure of red carpet dressing and how she’s prepping for the gig

What made you choose Versace for your wardrobe at the MTV EMAs?

A music awards show is very different from, say, the Oscars. MTV is hip, young and fun. The Versace dresses I’ll be wearing aren’t glamorous gowns. They’re short, hot and cool. Very rock ’n’ roll. When I saw what Donatella sent, I thought, “This is it!” Some of the pieces had to be made especially for me because the ones straight off the runway don’t always fit me. I’m not that thin.

10 years ago, but not today. I’m in fashion. I wear what’s current, fun and trendy. What’s your favorite red carpet moment of all time?

What makeup items will you have on hand to get you through the night?

Blotting paper, as I’ll probably be sweating a lot with the lights. I don’t like to over-powder, it’s too much. I’m a heavy lip-licker when I get nervous and I keep licking my lipstick off, so I’ll be applying lip-gloss nonstop or wear a lip stain that just stays on.

I’m not a very conservative person. I like to stay true to myself and stick to my instinct. When I fall in love with an outfit, I just go for it. I don’t care what people are going to say.

No, even though people have put me on the worst-dressed list a few times. I always think, “I liked the way I looked that day.” Sometimes people go

I’ve worn so many great dresses so it’s hard to pin it down to one. I’ve had Roberto Cavalli cut me out leather pants into super tiny shorts, or there was this crazy lime green dress I wore with turquoise thigh-high boots. I’ve also gone to the Oscars with a beautiful red Galliano dress and a gigantic bun over my head.

Dressing up for an awards show seems to come with so much pressure! What are a few rules that you normally stick by in order to avoid bad photo-ops and worst-dressed lists?

When you look back on your awards show red carpet looks, are there any that you wish you could banish from the Internet forever?

Eduardo Vilaro, Artistic Director

What’s the worst thing that could happen to you on live TV?

If my dress were to split open and I’d be standing there … buck naked. On live TV. That would be pretty embarrassing.

Become ‘Smitten’ with your kitchen Deb Perelman won our hearts with the gorgeous and approachable meals she creates from her tiny NYC space We’ll happily make room for her new cookbook Plus, how to make your kitchen as efficient as hers

I

f you’re one of the 8 million readers enamored with Deb Perelman’s award-winning site Smitten Kitchen, you know the charming home cook, mom and photographer creates spectacular dishes such as Roasted Pear and Chocolate Chunk Scones and Pancetta, White Bean and Chard Pot Pies in her 42-square-foot New York City kitchen. For the past two years, the food blogger has

been whipping up even more dishes from the little nook. In addition to enticing, easy-tofollow recipes for the site, she’s been coming up with brand new ones to share in “The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook,” out this month. So what’s her secret to cooking in a tiny urban space? “The most important thing is you do not look on Pinterest or design magazines because it’s bad for morale,” says Perel-

man. “But don’t feel like you can’t cook just because you have a small kitchen. You may not enjoy cooking as much as you would in a sweepingly large space with a beautiful woodland view, but if there’s something you really want to make, it’s worth it. It just takes a little bit more organization.” She shows us how. TINA CHADHA tina.chadha@metro.us

DEB PERELMAN

Perelman’s tips

When you stack all your pots in a cabinet, it’s so annoying to get one out. Now all I do is put up my right hand and just grab one. It’s very liberating.”

Free up counter space: “The first thing you should do is clear your counter. This is the only thing I’m super fussy about. If you have one counter you cannot have canisters on it, you cannot have a coffee maker on it. You’ll feel a lot better about your space if you clear the decks.” Get crafty: “I have a big gap above my cabinets. So I got five standing file holders and slid my cutting boards and my muffin pans in there. It’s great because now they don’t clutter my non-existing cabinet.” Pot racks rule: “I am a big recommender of a pot rack.

“Pot racks are liberating.”

Smart storage: “I feel like this is a very Pinterest-y thing — you see these cabinets that are lined with Mason jars that are labeled with chalk or whatever. There’s no reason to be precious about it, but I did cave and get a bunch of cheap jars for grains, rice and lentils. They look amazing. Your whole cabinets get lighter and brighter. You can see everything you need. And everything is airtight and no bugs can get in there. Also, cabinet shelves double and triple the amount of items you can store in your shelves.”

Q&A Did you find any themes when coming up with the recipes for the book? “I always felt I didn’t have any core cooking philosophy. But doing the book, I realize I do. I would say my influences are three parts. One part: I love French cooking in the classic method. Another part: I love cooking seasonal American food. The third one is the Eastern European Jewish influence that’s my background, which is why when I try to make beef bourguignon it turns into this vegetarian mushroom bourguignon with a sourcream dollop.

Weekend recipe

This recipe yields four servings.

Flat roasted chicken with tiny potatoes 1

3- to- 3½- pound (11/3- to1½- kg) chicken Table salt Freshly ground black pepper 1½ pounds (680 grams) tiny yellow potatoes, peeled 2 tablespoons (30 ml) melted butter or olive oil, for potatoes 1 lemon, to finish 1 tablespoon minced fresh thyme leaves, to finish Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. ing stock). Season the cavity generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Lay the chicken, breast side up, in a roasting pan (I adore my 12-inch cast-iron skillet for this; it works best with 3-pound birds), and gently pat the breast skin dry with a paper towel. Generously season the top of the bird with more salt and freshly ground black pepper. Nestle the potatoes around the chicken, and drizzle them lightly with butter or olive oil. Sprinkle the potatoes with salt and pepper. Roast the chicken for 30 to 45 minutes, or until a thermometer inserted into the thigh registers 165 degrees. Toss the potatoes after about 20 minutes so

that they cook evenly. When the chicken has finished cooking, transfer potatoes to a large serving platter. Remove the legs, thighs, wings and breasts from the spatchcocked chicken, and arrange them with potatoes. Squeeze juice of entire lemon over dish, then sprinkle with thyme. Serve with simply cooked vegetables. Eat at once. — Excerpted from “The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook by Deb Perelman. Copyright 2012 by Deb Perelman. planning book what you have to decide on,” she said. “Like, I don’t care what color the napkins are, to be honest. I really don’t care. So it’s a lot of weird detail. I don’t want to be doing too much and be crazy.” Smart girl: Hosting three wedding sounds like a logistical nightmare. Does that mean guests have to give her three presents? Do they have to do the Electric Slide three times? And does it mean she would (inevitably) have to have three divorces?

Time to take away the Trump card RE: “S— MY REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER SAYS” (METRO, OCT. 8) The

biggest question I have in reference to “Donald Trump The Reality Show Star” is: Why? Why are we giving him so much media attention? Seriously, why do we have to hear about his feelings in regards to the election. Who cares? He is not relevant in any fashion other than his views on how to become rich. Sit down Donald Trump, you are becoming intolerable! BRENDA FORD-KELLY, VIA E-MAIL

Put the burner on to heat up talks on global warming There’s more discussion of global warming since Sandy. But still, no one is really seri-

ous about it. The right pretends it doesn’t exist. The left pretends we can just cut CO2 emissions and it will be OK. Cutting emissions just means making it worse more slowly. That still means making it worse. We need to actively remove carbon from the atmosphere, intervene in weather patterns or both. Climate change isn’t a punishment. The atmosphere doesn’t distinguish between carbon emitted to meet the needs of righteous hardworking people and by greedy plutocrats. DAN WYLIE-SEARS, VIA E-MAIL

Need overrides politics in election Individuals have said that the past election was a sign of shifting values or shifting

ideas of who we are as a nation — some have even suggested that it reflect some racial ideas — but no information backs these ideas up. Many of us are suffering; times are hard and we wanted someone who could relate to us. We needed someone who won’t just think of think of business but a human need, even if we may or may not agree with his approach. Shifting views is wishful thinking and its harder to come by than most think. Racial ideas are harder to change than most would like. But the key to this election wasn’t ideas, it wasn’t a mandate. It was individuals who need someone who can relate to them — so in the end, the choice was made one way or the other. JOHN HEMPHILL, VIA E-MAIL

Horoscope

Forget the past — let’s not repeat it

Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. If at all possible, keep your financial affairs to yourself — and by the same token, keep your nose out of those of others. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. If someone for whom you’re doing a job gives you specific instructions, don’t deviate from them without checking with that person first. If you do, serious complications could result. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. Keep your opinions and/or suggestions to yourself regarding a matter in which you’re not directly involved. Even if the receiving party is a close pal, your input won’t be welcomed. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. If you spot shenanigans perpetrated by someone who does not operate out in the open, don’t let him or her know you’re hip. This way, you’ll have the advantage of surprise. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. Try not to do anything that could further antagonize an already reluctant ally. Their support could be crucial. Aries March 21-April 19. If you need to have something serviced, check your sources as to who would do the better job. If you don’t, you’ll be leaving it up to chance as to what kind of result you can expect.

Most of the analysis of the election I’ve seen is that the staunch conservatives need to admit the world is changing. Seeing the overseas reactions I can only agree 100 percent. The old days of church ladies dictating our morals are gone. The days of homophobia, illegal abortions and barefoot and pregnant women in the kitchen are gone. The days that people listen to hatemongers like Limbaugh and Savage are going, but it will take time and education. The days that freedom is only for the people who “toe the moral line” are gone. Hopefully, the days that the greedy run the show will be gone someday. This election taught everyone a lesson, just as Hurricane Sandy taught me that I complain too much with two loaves of bread under my arm when people are losing their entire lives. ROBERT C. YUKNAVECH, VIA E-MAIL

Taurus April 20-May 20. Being far too possessive of someone with whom you’re emotionally involved could jeopardize the relationship. Loving the person is one thing, smothering him or her is another. Gemini May 21-June 20. Have some consideration for your mate’s point of view regarding a vital family issue. If you are oblivious to what he or she thinks, it could trigger a whopper of an argument. Cancer June 21-July 22. When working on a task that requires the use of tools, do not allow yourself to be rushed beyond what is a reasonable, safe pace. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Attempt to manage your financial resources with the care of a hard-nosed banker. If instead you are careless or extravagant, you can expect to suffer some financial inconveniences. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Whether you’re aware of it or not, the example you set will be the one everybody follows. If you’re nasty or difficult to deal with, expect others to be so as well. Bask in your deserved popularity. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. Should a person with whom you have dealings begin to anger you, keep it to yourself. You’d only make things worse if you react with shouts or harsh words. BERNICE BEDE OSOL

Pete Carroll has the Seahawks over .500 and only behind San Francisco in the NFC West.

Jets need win ... for Pete’s sake New York travels west to face off with familiar face (Sunday, 4 p.m., CBS) Carroll has Seattle on track After accomplishing nearly everything possible during his nine-year stint as USC head coach, Seattle coach Pete Carroll is beginning to find the success he never had as head coach of the Jets 18 years ago. He took over a floundering team and after consecutive 7-9 seasons, the rebuilding seems to be well in hand with the Seahawks second in the NFC West. “It’s really taken us this time to get going. I think at the middle of last season when we crossed into the second half of last year, we kind of felt like we discovered the guys we want to lean on for the long haul,” Carroll said. “We put together the nucleus of guys that we had chosen. [General manager] John Schneider did a fantastic job of accumulating guys and we started winning games the second half. ... We really haven’t backed off of that.” On Sunday, he faces a team with which he has long ties and a checkered past. The Jets and Carroll are forever linked by

Carroll’s career winning .814 percentage at USC, with vacated wins included

four seasons in the early 1990s as an assistant and then as head coach in 1995 for a 6-10 season. He was then fired. The kind of talent and lofty expectations he had at USC helped season the coach for his next NFL job. “Even though we’re still at 5-4 right now, we’ve been close to having all of our games. We haven’t been out of anything and have been involved with the ball in our hands with the chance to win or the chance to stop the win each week,” Carroll said. “We think from this point forward, we have a chance to be a really good club and be very competitive and we’re going to try and prove that this week.” KRISTIAN DYER sports@metro.us

A Good Morning Treat! Free Pastries EQ¯¯ EQ

1

Stopping the run — Last Sunday, Seattle RB Marshawn Lynch had his best game of the season — 124 yards on 26 carries, including a touchdown. It isn’t a good matchup on paper for the Jets, who are slow at linebacker and No. 27 in run defense.

Over 5,000 Slots & 900 Table Game Machines Just MINUTES AWAY!

2

Which Sanchez steps up? — The bye week better have been good for QB Mark Sanchez, who’s coming off a rough Week 8. Whether Sanchez can handle the hostile crowd in Seattle will determine who wins.

3

Rookie under center — Rookie quarterbacks aren’t supposed to transition seamlessly into the NFL. But Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is doing just that. His completion percentage, yards per attempt and touchdown numbers are all better than the fourth-year Sanchez. METRO/KD

The Giants are one of the most storied franchises in the league, so excuse them if they refuse to indulge in trash talk after Bengals’ wideout A.J. Green declared New York’s secondary has “big holes. Safety Antrel Rolle, never one to back down from a confrontation, verbal or otherwise, actually wanted no part of the banter. Rolle even agreed with Green’s assertion — to a point. “I think every defense has holes in it. If our defense has holes in it, then he shouldn’t have a problem exploiting it, said Rolle. “I’ll let my pads do the talking on Sunday. That’s how I approach the game. That’s how we approach the game, and if he sees me he better duck. Green, a second-year wide-

The first-round pick leads the team with 51 receptions, 735 yards and eight touchdowns in 2012. “He’s a very good player, capable of big plays, [who] seems to be on the other end of a lot of [deep passing plays], Coughlin said, noting he wasn’t in agreement with Green about the holes in his secondary. “You can’t make a generalization. You have to look at the individual play and then you can comment on it, Coughlin said. TONY WILLIAMS
