Free rides for some?

COURTNEY SACCO/METRO

Riders say some MBTA workers couldn’t care less if you pay Officials deny that employees give free rides

It’s an unspoken truth that pretty girls and smooth talkers are occasionally treated to a little “on the house” action. It happens at restaurants, where free drinks are practically a currency, and if your pal works at the local cinema, you’re probably seeing that movie for free. But for a struggling public transit system where every dollar counts, it would be hard to justify looking the other way when people don’t want to pay. “The MBTA doesn’t care about collecting fares,” said a man who goes by the name Jack Ryan, and claims to be married to a T worker. His wife, Ryan said, is “flabbergasted at what the T says and what it actually does.” “Most stations go unmanned,” Ryan added. “Talk about total loss of revenue.” While the MBTA has been outspoken on its stance of cracking down on fare

dodgers — on July 1 the penalty went up to $50 for the first offense — Twitter is abuzz with posts from gleeful riders who boast that they don’t have to pay. “Shout out to the MBTA worker who gave me a free T pass this morning,” @Dondo_9 recently tweeted. While some rejoice on the free rides, others are not so impressed with workers. “Just asked a #MBTA staff if I could pay commuter rail fare w/card. He said they’d

probably let me on for free. #MBTABudget #fail,” tweeted @retroandi last week. Regardless, the transit agency insists there is no internal problem with workers looking the other way when people don’t want to pay. “The authority takes fare evasion extremely seriously,” said MBTA Spokesman Joshua Robin, who said no employees have been disciplined this year for failing to enforce fare payment. “Any employee found to be assisting customers in evading fares would be subject to disciplinary action under the MBTA’s progressive discipline policy,” Robin said. “But our employees are certainly not the issue.” T officials estimate that system-wide fare evasion accounts for less than 1.5 percent of all boarding, representing roughly $5 to $7 million in revenue each year. MBTA ramps up efforts In 2011, the MBTA handed out 3,481 citations to fare dodgers, bringing in roughly $36,445. Since January, the agency has handed out 2,577 citations. Because of the increase in fines, the MBTA has pulled in $39,548. T officials estimate that fare evasion system wide accounts for less than 1.5 percent of all boarding, representing roughly $5 to $7 million in revenue each year. To help cut back on peo-

ple hopping free rides, the T implemented a front dooronly boarding policy for customers at above-ground stations on the Green Line’s during weekends, holidays and off-peak hours. During peak hours, which are defined as 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. and from 3:30 to 7 p.m., customers are able to board at the side and rear doors with a pre-loaded CharlieCard, CharlieTicket or valid pass. The policy was implemented beginning in January of this year on the E line and expanded to all other lines by mid-April.

OXFORD. A horrific shooting has left many people asking questions after a father killed his young daughter and shot his son before killing himself. Authorities said Daryl Benway, 41, was found dead after having shot himself Saturday night. Optimism can feel at home in Boston Urban experiment shines light on the brighter side of city’s personality People aren’t that bad after all When it comes to having a friendly reputation, people are split on whether Boston is chock full of kindness. In fact, readers of Travel and Leisure Magazine ranked Boston one of the rudest cities in America last year. But as it turns out, the Hub has its fair share of friendliness. A recent experiment called “Project Gratitude” debunked the myth that the city is full of self-centered jerks. A team of six interns at Mullen, a local advertising agency, offered up blank Post-it notes at three Boloco eateries for people to write messages of thanks. They also planted cashfilled wallets around the city to see what would happen. The result, they say, was en-

couraging. “I wouldn’t say that I am an overly pessimistic person, but I was absolutely not expecting the reaction we have received thus far. I saw so much kindness over the past few weeks from the most unlikely people,” said Willa Huizing, one of the minds behind the project. Last week the team collected about 300 Post-Its filled with words of gratitude for random acts of kindness. “We all had an issue with the fact that if somebody does a good deed, most of the time it goes unnoticed,” said intern Courtney Denning. “The PostIts were meant to celebrate these unheralded people.” The other aspect of the project was a little edgier.

Les Gosule, whose 27-year-old daughter Melissa was raped and murdered by a repeat offender, recently pleaded with lawmakers to pass the legislation, dubbed Melissa’s Bill.

It came so close, but a bill to deny habitual offenders parole will likely fail again. Supporters of the bill, which would deny parole for those convicted of their third violent offense, expressed their outrage this weekend after Gov. Deval Patrick chose not to sign it. Instead, Patrick sent the bill back to the legislature with amendments. “Gov. Patrick has had a busy week defending the interests of those who break the law,” said state Sen. Bruce Tarr, the minority leader. “Now he is trying to provide

violent repeat criminals with a safety valve.” The bill was stuck in a conference committee for months until both the House and Senate passed it this month. It was put before Patrick who returned it on Saturday. The bill has been submitted multiple times over the past decade without success. One of Patrick’s issues with the bill is that it did not allow for judges to assign parole in certain circumstances. “None of us is wise or prescient enough to foresee each and every circumstance in which the new habitual of-

Romney ‘would back Israeli strike over Iran nuclear capability’

URIEL SINAI/GETTY IMAGES

U.S. Republican candidate Mitt Romney, presenting himself as Israel’s best friend in the Nov. 6 presidential election, said yesterday that “any and all measures must be used to keep Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. A top aide said Romney would support an Israeli military strike if all options had been exhausted, but the candidate himself balked at repeating that position. In a foreign policy speech in Jerusalem, Romney voiced strong support for the alliance between the United States and Israel and seemed to suggest that President Barack Obama had let the relationship flounder. “We cannot stand silent as those who seek to undermine Israel voice their criticisms.

attention anyone with a tight budget or tight pants.

Mitt Romney arrives to deliver a speech outside the Old City yesterday in Jerusalem, Israel. Romney stated that he backs Israel’s right to defend itself against the threat of a nuclear Iran.

And we certainly should not join in that criticism. Diplomatic distance in public between our nations emboldens Israel’s adversaries, said Romney, the walls of the Old City lining the hilltop behind him. “We should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its

nuclear course, and it is our fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded. We recognize Israel’s right to defend itself and that it is right for America to stand with you, he said. REUTERS

Israel denies report Obama aide shared Iran war plan A senior Israeli official denied yesterday a newspaper report that President Barack Obama’s national security adviser had briefed Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a U.S. contingency plan to attack Iran should diplomacy fail to curb its nuclear program. The Israeli liberal Haaretz daily yesterday quoted an unnamed U.S. official as saying the adviser, Thomas Donilon, had described the plan over dinner with Netanyahu earlier this month. Haaretz said the briefing was the most significant effort by high-level U.S. officials who had visited Israel in the past month, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to try to dissuade Israel from launching its own military strike on Iran. How startups transform online education Advances in technology coupled with increased demand for services have given birth to a wave of online learning apps Big name schools have signed up

EdX offers courses from MIT, Harvard Announced on May 2, EdX is the joint creation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technolo-

gy and Harvard. The partnership strives to bring online learning to people across the globe and offers online classes for free. EdX courses include videos, quizzes, feedback and more to help students nav-

igate the material. This month, the service received a $1 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which shows just how much potential online education programs have to grow.

of its kind to offer full degree programs online at top-tier universities. It’s also the most highly funded. As of April, its total investments added up to a little less than $97 million. 2tor partners with universities across the country to help them build and market online degree programs. The startup has created master’s degree programs for a variety of schools, including a Master of Arts in Teaching at the University of Southern California and

Georgetown University’s nursing program. 2tor is making waves for its Web-based infrastructure that allows professors to easily share information with students, create interactive lessons and provide lectures and opportunities for social interaction.

Udemy: Udemy is unique

because it allows anyone to take or build an online course. The site offers courses on technology, business, music, art, languages, math, science, games, sports and more. The basic premise is to crowdsource education. Much like how blogging allows anyone to share information, Udemy allows anyone to create courses with nothing more than an internet connection. Many individuals with a desire to learn are cut out of the education system by rising tuition, housing and commuting costs,

but Udemy empowers anyone to share and learn at a more affordable rate.

Voxy: This startup is allow-

Voxy turns your real-world conversations, activities and the media you consume into contextual language lessons. London’s historic Horse Guards Parade transformed into beach volleyball mecca For the gold CASSANDRA GARRISON CASSANDRA.GARRISON@METRO.US

T

he beach party atmosphere inside Horse Guards Parade today is a stark contrast from the air of royal pageantry you’d typically see on the queen’s birthday. In the 1500s, the site of London’s Horse Guards Parade is where Henry VIII watched jousting tournaments. The parade grounds were built in 1745 and are typically home to the annual Trooping of the Colour event. Today, with the help of 5,000 tons of sand, it has been transformed into an international playing field for Olympic beach volleyball, where 15,000 fans whoop and holler as teams of two bump, set and spike

game at Madison Square Garden. Commentators with British accents encourage the crowd to cheer and clap, silly tunes play while “rakers” smooth sand off the court lines, excited fans initiate “the wave” and vendors sell pizza, chips and beer. Bouts of rain prompted a crowd-wide reaction of pulling on plastic ponchos, but fans didn’t budge from their seats. After the Netherlands men’s team pulled out a close win over Venezuela, fans went wild. Ann Speelman — a Netherlands native who now lives in London — and her mother proudly waved a flag and gushed about the adrenaline rush of seeing her home country win during the Olympics. “You’re there, you feel it. It is such an amazing experience,” Speelman told Metro. “Look at this view. We’re so close. To have this as a venue is amazing.” While countries including Australia, Germany, Latvia and

Great Britain played today, there were plenty of nationalities represented in the stands. American Pat Jameson, an aerospace engineer from Phoenix, brought his family of four to London to experience the Olympics and still got decked out in red, white and blue to attend a match in Horse Guards Parade, even though Team USA wasn’t playing today. “Gotta represent,” he said. “We’re just here to soak it in — any venue, any athlete.” Horse Guards Parade will return to its original function after the London Olympics come to an end. But for now, it remains the scene of stiff competition, including a win by American women Kerri WalshJennings and Misty MayTreanor over Australians Tasmin Hinchley and Natalie Cook, in a late-night game on Saturday. – Cassandra Garrison is covering the Olympics live from London. Joined by a number of costars, including Selma Blair and series creator Bruce Helford, Sheen appeared relatively relaxed — or at least weekend-casual, wearing plaid shorts and no socks — to address the critics who had scrutinized his meltdown after he was fired from â€?Two and a Half Men.â€? “It was a crazy time, and it was sort of like a dream I couldn’t wake up from or some runaway train I couldn’t get off of, but I was the conductor,â€? actor to be more accountable. “Anger Managementâ€? is poised to receive a 90-episode pickup if its initial run of 10 episodes perform well — and so far, the network is pleased with the ratings. (The show launched on June 28 to the highest series premiere ratings in cable history for a scripted comedy.) Sheen called that prospect “exciting as hellâ€? and added that he doesn’t “think 90 is

Before a renewal decision is made, the elder Sheen will be guest starring as Martin Goodson, Charlie Goodson’s dad, on the episode that airs Aug. 16. John Landgraf, president and general manager of FX Networks, said adding Martin Sheen “will give an extra dimension to the show, and it will also make it a multigenerational family show. As for working with his reallife dad, Sheen reminded critics that the veteran had guest starred on his son’s previous sitcoms, “Spin City and “Two and a Half Men. “I don’t want to say we peaked, but [Martin] brings a whole different energy to it, I think it’s the best episode we did. It’s likely they’ll have 90 more chances to top it. AMBER RAY

Begin by standing up straight. As you exhale, fold forward. From here, exhale and step your left foot back into a high lunge position (your right knee should be at a right angle). Lay the midline (pubic bone to breastbone) of your torso down on the midline of the right thigh (hip crease to knee) and bring your hands to your right knee: right hand to the outer knee, left hand to the inner knee. Squeeze the knee with your two hands as you slightly lift your torso. On an exhale, slightly turn your knee to the right.

2

From the lunge position, stretch your arms forward (they should be parallel to the floor and to each other). Make sure your palms are facing each other. Exhale and press the head of the right thighbone back and press the heel into the floor. Straighten the front leg as you lift the back leg. As you lift the back leg, try resisting the move by pressing the tailbone into the pelvis.

Come up into Warrior III by lunging the torso forward. Don’t allow the torso to swing forward or you will lose your balance.

4

Release the hip of the raised leg toward the floor until the two hip points are even and parallel to the floor. Energize the back leg and extend it behind you. Reach in the opposite direction with the arms. Bring the head up slightly and look forward.

Before you say something to them, I suggest that you examine your own attitudes about your parents’ behavior. For example, do you feel somewhat reassured that you still have loved ones looking out for you? Are they the first people you consult when you have a problem or decision to make? their support. Once you’ve checked in with yourself, and determined that you are ready to fully embrace your independence, then arrange a time to speak with your parents, preferably in person. Tell them that while you love them and appreciate their concern, you would also like them to stop calling and checking in on you so frequently. Explain that it undermines your sense of confidence and independence. You might want to suggest an actual number of times a week when they can call, or promise to call or text twice a week or every Sunday to say hello. t seems like there’s an app for everything now, and job hunting is no different. With unemployment holding steady at 8.1 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job seekers are using any tool available to get ahead of the crowd. Plus, what’s easier than using your mobile device? These days, you can use your phone to watch movies and set reminders — among with a host of other pretty snazzy and sophisticated tasks. As Zooey Deschanel proved, the iPhone’s Siri can tell if you it’s raining — even looking out the window is a thing of the past. So why not utilize all that technology to get a leg up in the job arena? You certainly wouldn’t be the only one with this idea: 77 percent of job seekers have already jumped on the app bandwagon. Here are some apps for job seekers looking to take their search on the go.

Right to buy chicken will be eagerly enforced I hope that when I make my first purchase at Chick-fil-A, some fool attempts to stop me. My right to buy what I want — any legally sold product — will not be denied by a bunch of sick, arrogant and bitter social misfits. JOHN BEVAN, VIA E-MAIL

Sadly, all have right to free speech Phil Howard said that Metro had posted a narrow-minded viewpoint from a narrow-minded person. A majority, if not most, of the letters that are sent in to the editorial, or commentary, or letters section of every newspaper have amazingly ignorant

Free speech applies to all — but it seems that loud people with nothing bright or beneficial to say are the ones most likely to hide behind the First Amendment. LUCY MARTINEZ, VIA E-MAIL

Justice should take the high road Our penal system is intended to mete out not cruel and unusual punishment but only the punishment that fits the crime. The challenge of that system is to provide punishment that fits the crime and not to seek revenge. The function of that

system is to support a humane civilization, to keep it from descending into vengefulness and abject cruelty in the face of heinous crimes. Obviously abject cruelty and a disregard of the dignity of human life is a main feature of the Aurora killer. I don’t want our society to be a copycat of the criminal it will be trying in its courts.

Hiding tax returns makes Mitt traitor OK, so the Romney team has calculated there’s less damage taking the heat from hiding his tax returns than from releasing them. Reminds me of when the tea-baggers were demanding Obama’s birth certificate and he obligingly went ahead and posted it on the Internet. That tells you something right there about the character and honesty differences between these two men. What Romney probably has to hide is vast income from offshore accounts with far less than fair U.S. taxes paid. Romney still likes to cast himself as a patriot. I’d say he’s more a traitor, ripping off the country he wants to rule. PAUL SIMONS, VIA-EMAIL

One shot at redemption CHRISTOPHER PASATIERI/GETTY IMAGES

With a daunting stretch run and growing gap in wild-card race, this is the last gasp Ten games at ‘unfriendly’ Fenway coming up There have been portions of the recent Red Sox schedule that have stood as “defining” stretches, times when optimists hope the club can prove that it remains relevant. Each one ends with little fanfare and more ammunition for the growing legion of pessimists. The six-game road trip that concluded Sunday in the Bronx was one such stretch, again doing little to turn around an increasingly awkward and lackluster campaign. If there are any optimists left (there was a recent sighting of one in Saugus), they must be gearing up for the 10-game homestand that begins tonight, the next, and perhaps last, of those “defining” stretches. The homestand, including visits from Detroit, Minnesota and Texas, is the longest this season. Once complete, the Sox play 32 of their last 50 games on the road, including two trips to New York and a nine-gamer on the West Coast. Here are three things that must occur to restore hope:

1

DAVID MUST DOMINATE

Entering last night the Sox were 4-7 since David Ortiz

went down with an Achilles injury. They’ve scored five runs or less in eight of those 11 games, six times scoring three or fewer. Boston is a top-notch offense with Ortiz in the lineup. Without him, it is pedestrian. All signs point to Ortiz returning Wednesday night when he is eligible to come off the disabled list.

BUCH(HOLZ) THE TREND

Raise your hand if you are sick of hearing that the Red Sox need Jon Lester and Josh Beckett to pitch better. As true as it is, it’s a tired statement. Too obvious. What they need almost as much is for Clay Buchholz to stay on fire. The righty is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA in his last eight starts. He can set a tone for the homestand tonight in the seriesopener against Detroit — and perhaps continue to support an exceptionally average staff.

tomorrow, maybe those still left in the clubhouse can look at one another, realize this is their team and begin to play with a chip on their shoulders. Due to its depth, it can certainly overcome obstacles.
