Bidders with $70M can now get in on action for Phily’s second casino State gaming officials accepting bids, lawmakers yet to weigh in Let the scramble begin for Philadelphia’s second gaming hall. The state gaming board announced yesterday that it would begin accepting applications for the license which it yanked from the stalled Foxwoods project in December 2010. State lawmakers had discussed allowing the license to be rebid statewide, but no action has been taken. The board’s decision does not rule out a possible change by legislators, but will at least start the process. A number of high-profile suitors are expected to apply, including developer Bart Blatstein, Parkway Corp. President Robert Zuritsky and real estate magnate Don Peebles. Business mogul Donald Trump applied for a license during the first bidding in 2006, but it is unclear if he plans to submit another application. Mayor Michael Nutter, who initially opposed casinos but was one of many elected officials who lobbied to keep the second license in Philadelphia, applauded the decision, arguing that it would provide muchneeded revenue for schools and create thousands of jobs. Some critics claim the market for casinos in southeastern Pennsylvania is oversaturated with SugarHouse, nearby Parx

SugarHouse, however, led the state’s 11 casinos in gross revenue per slot machine in May. “I think the picture is better than what people were forecasting before,” said Stephen Mullin, former city commerce director and current senior vice president for Econsult Corp., which is conducting an economic impact study for Blatstein. Casino opponents said the move will further perpetuate gambling addiction in the region. “It’s a predatory industry and there’s more prey to be had,” said Paul Boni, a board member of Stop Predatory Gambling, a national advocacy group. Police have arrested a man for allegedly driving erratically, then threatening another motorist with a crossbow during a road rage outburst. According to investigators, officers responded to a ShopRite parking lot at Frankford Avenue and Knorr Street in Mayfair for a report of a person with a weapon around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. They arrested Kenneth Butterworth, 44, of the 3400 block of Friendship Street a short time later. A man told them that while he was driving west on Harbison Avenue, he saw a man, later identified as Butterworth, at the wheel of a Dodge Stratus that was weaving in and out of traffic. The man said he changed lanes to the left of the Dodge, passed it and changed back to the right lane in front of the car. The victim told investigators that Butterworth then changed to the left lane, pulled up beside him and pointed a crossbow at him from his window. The man

called 911 and followed the Dodge to the parking lot, where he said Butterworth again pointed the crossbow at him. He fled the area. Arriving officers stopped a gold Dodge Stratus about a half mile away from the parking lot on the 4000 block of

Cottman Avenue. The victim met police there and positively identified both Butterworth and the crossbow he allegedly possessed. Police recovered the weapon, which they said was loaded with one arrow. Butterworth is charged with assault, reckless endangerment and possession of an instrument of crime, according to court documents. He was arraigned and bail was set at $35,000. Butterworth was sentenced in 2006 to six to 23 months in prison and one year’s probation after pleading guilty to theft, court documents show. He was sentenced again in 2007 and 2009, each time to nine to 23 months in jail, for violating his probation on that charge. According to a Facebook page purporting to belong to the suspect, his interests include tactical shooting, hiking and camping, blowgun shooting, fishing and archery.

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA. Police released surveillance video yesterday of three men who allegedly stole a 68-year-old city man’s identity and used it to open multiple fake credit card accounts between January and May. Investigators are looking for the suspects, who they say used the accounts to make purchases at Home Depot, Target and Macy’s totaling over $100,000. One suspect is described as a five-foot-ten, 190-pound black man between 40 and 50 years old with a beard and glasses. The second is of an unknown race and was last seen wearing a tan hat and glasses, while the third is an Asian man with black hair. In the video, the men can be seen leaving Home Depot after one alleged fraudulent purchase in a white pickup truck with a ladder rack. They appear to be traveling with a small child. METRO

Attacker demands ‘money,’ beats bedridden, elderly woman NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA.

An elderly, bedridden woman was viciously assaulted during a home invasion robbery in the Rhawnhurst section early yesterday, police said. The victim, 86, told investigators that she was sleeping in her residence at the Meadowview Apartments on the 8100 block of Algon Avenue when, shortly before 1:30 a.m., she was awakened by an unknown man at her bedside. While the woman was unable to describe her attacker, she told police she

heard him say “money.” When she began to scream, he beat her. The victim is receiving treatment at Frankford Hospital-Torresdale for a fractured orbital socket and cheek lacerations. Reacting to the upcoming release, Paterno’s family released a statement that read in part: “Unfortunately, recent events have raised questions about the fairness and confidentiality of the investigative process.” The probe had been marked by “a virtual torrent of leaks,” with the release of “select emails intended to smear Joe Paterno and other former Penn State officials,” the family said in a statement. An email, written by Curley and provided to CNN, appeared to suggest that Paterno had urged his colleagues not to report the incident to Sandusky’s charity or to the Department of Public Welfare. The Paternos denied that Joe Paterno had told Curley to cover up the incident. They said they welcomed meeting with Freeh to review the findings and respond to them. REUTERS

An investigation into Penn State University’s role in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal will be published today, though after leaked emails during the past month, the family of late football coach Joe Paterno has already questioned its fairness and confidentiality. The head of the eightmonth probe, former FBI Director Louis Freeh, said the report would be published online at 9 a.m. this morning and he will hold a news briefing at 10 a.m. in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania State University’s trustees hired Freeh and his law firm to investigate the school’s handling of explosive allegations involving Sandusky, a former assistant coach in the high-powered football program, and university officials. Sandusky, 68, was convicted last month of 45 counts of child molestation involving 10 boys. The charges involving Sandusky prompted the firing in November of university President Graham Spanier and head coach Paterno, who won more games than any other major college football coach. Paterno died of lung cancer in January at age 85. At the heart of the Freeh probe is how Paterno and other Penn State officials reacted to allegations by Mike Mc-

Obama backed by single people, Romney by married couples JEWEL SAMAD/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

President Barack Obama’s slim lead over Republican rival Mitt Romney in the White House race is fueled by a broad marriage gap, with Obama enjoying a big advantage among single voters — particularly women, a Quinnipiac University poll found yesterday. Obama leads among single voters by 54 percent to 34 percent, while married voters back Romney 51 percent to 38 percent, the poll found. Obama has a huge advantage with single women, 60 percent to 31 percent, while Romney leads among married women 49 percent to 42 percent. Romney leads by 19 percentage points among married men, and Obama leads by 9 points among single men. The poll showed Obama with an overall 3-point national edge on Romney, 46 percent to 43 percent, four months before the November 6 election. “Although much has been made about the gender gap

When are you exclusive?

There are a few ways to figure out when you’ve gotten yourself into boyfriend/girlfriend territory

F

rom recent reports it seems that actors Michelle Williams and Jason Segel have quietly crossed that line between playing with the idea of being exclusive and committing to being a couple. At a premiere party to celebrate Segel’s film “The Five-Year Engagement, they were seen holding hands and gazing into each other’s eyes. They are both known for taking their time when it comes to romance. It raises the question: How does a hopeful pair get from one point to the next? When do you actually become an exclusive couple?

Shrink Wrap DR. JANE GREER HEALTH.METRO.US

One of my patients was pondering this recently, and she asked me when it is appropriate to have the conversation and negotiate the terms of becoming a committed couple. I told her that in order to gauge that, you want to look at what is going on between the two of you.

THURSDAY, JULY 12, 2012

Being exclusive is the exciting hill everyone wants to get over in a new, promising relationship. And there will be definite signs that you are successfully making that climb. There is the obvious: If you begin to refer to each other, and to introduce each other, as boyfriend and girlfriend. Other clues are when you start to show your affection in public by holding hands and touching, making the statement that you belong together, or the biggie: You start saying “I love you. And the best indication of all is that you no longer want to date other people or even leave that

door open for the possibility. When it becomes clear that you are focusing your energy and heart on that one person, and that it is a mutual choice, that is a good time to check in to determine if you are now being exclusive.

O

nce you decide you are each other’s one and only, you will be able to usher in the emotional and sexual trust and safety that most people crave. You want “the talk my patient was referring to — and even more importantly, you want the move toward steady dating.

You want to acknowledge what is already happening between the two of you rather than be in a negotiation to put something in place the way it seems to be for Michelle and Jason. — Relationship expert Dr. Jane Greer is the creator of “Shrink Wrapâ€? – national commentary on what we can learn from celebrity relationships – and host of “Let’s Talk Sexâ€? at Healthylife.net. Her book, “What About Me? Stop SelďŹ shness From Ruining Your Relationship,â€? is available nationwide. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

Government should help those trying to help themselves RE: “YOU’LL MISS MINIMUM WAGE WHEN ROBOTS ARRIVE”:

This is to Daniel Green: With all of your wisdom, I hope you also realize that there is a generation of 20somethings drowning in tens of thousands of dollars of crippling student loan debt and that higher education isn’t always an option. Maybe instead of criticizing those that do work those 2-3 part-time jobs, you should be thankful you don’t have to worry about minimum wage pay to begin with — at least that’s what it sounds like from the pedestal you’re preaching off of. We live in a society where these jobs are a gift

to the underpaid and underemployed — or someone like myself, trying to pay for college. The 10cent raise every year probably isn’t gonna break the big business piggy bank. KRISTI SENAT VIA E-MAIL

Don’t do the climb if you can’t treat the Lyme This is just friendly feedback: Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria, not a virus, and it’s called Borrelia burgdorferi. It’s from the same family of bacteria as syphilis. Bacteria are treated with antibiotics, not viruses. Antibiotics do not work on bacteria. ABDEL BRAHIMI, MD, VIA E-MAIL

Blame game played in the past — and future, too! RE: “CLINTON AND DEMS SOW SEEDS OF FAILURE”: Sorry, but

nearly everything Raymond Collins mentions is either incorrect or simply irrelevant to the original point. Yes, banking deregulation began under Clinton — but it was under Bush’s watch (and his encouragement) that Wall Street created and pursued the labyrinthine schemes that resulted in the 2008 meltdown. The subprime mortgage market (another Bush creation) was utterly tangential to the crisis. Further, I remind everyone of Senator Mitch McConnell’s on-record statement of the Republican’s single

The persistence of sheets in sheep’s clothing The KKK is not a civicminded group. It is a gang whose sole purpose is to hurt people — not help people. The State of Georgia was absolutely in the right not to allow them to post a sign. It has nothing to do with freedom of speech or any of their rights as individuals. The state does not support street gangs anymore than a gang in sheep’s clothing, which is what this KKK group is. The most shocking part about this is — they still exist?

Aries March 21-April 19. Don’t settle for sticker price when you’re out shopping for something that is more money than you want to pay. With a little poking around, you’ll find a good substitute at a lower price. Taurus April 20-May 20. When conversing with friends, avoid discussing subjects that are much too personal to share with everybody. Focus on fun things and relax. Gemini May 21-June 20. One of your greatest obstacles is allowing self-defeating thoughts to overwhelm your thinking. You can control anything you set your mind to, including avoiding all the negatives.

Vick unveils clothing line, fans go wild Eagles QB shows ‘V7’ collection at Modell’s Fans cheer, pack store Apparel designed by Vick himself

The fans started lining up around 9 a.m. yesterday at Modell’s on Cottman Avenue. They were there to see Mike Vick introduce his new clothing line. Even though they were instructed that Vick wouldn’t be posing for photos, they couldn’t resist. They shouted. They screamed. They pleaded. And when a store representative pointed to the woman who bought the first T-shirt off the rack, Vick immediately pulled her aside for an intimate photo op. “I love you, Mike,” she shouted. “I love you, too,” Vick shouted back. Vick was there to showcase his V7 signature collection, a sports apparel line that was conceived and designed by the Eagles quarterback. The full V7 line — which is being sold exclusively at Modell’s — will be unveiled July 22 on the store’s website, with a fall collection due out in November. Part of the sales will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Philadelphia. “I don’t want to reveal too much,” Vick said. “The most important thing right now is to get this out there to my fans and, as time goes on, I’m going to continue to keep my eyes on the prize, which is having success on the football field. I think that correlates to my off-the-field success — just for my legacy, for my brand. I think this is an awesome op-

portunity for me.” Of course, re-establishing Vick’s personal brand has been a mission for No. 7 since being released from prison in May 2009. It was a long climb, but he seems to be back at the top of the mountain. Vick signed an endorsement deal with Nike last summer and re-

cently got married to longtime girlfriend Kijafa Frink. According to The Wall Street Journal, Vick has restored his brand 65 to 75 percent since leaving prison. “It’s amazing to be here,” said Frink, who stuck by Vick while he was in prison. “We went through a few rough years in our lives so to even be here today, and to have a clothing line, it’s something that we never thought about four years ago and here it is. I’m extremely proud of him. This is the most excited I’ve seen him about anything since coming back to football.”

Brooklyn has ended its hot pursuit of Dwight Howard, according to ESPN and Yahoo! Sports. The Nets had been trying hard to finalize a deal for the All-Star center, but talks fizzled. Instead, they inked Brook Lopez to a $60-million contract. The Lakers are still thought to be in the mix to land Howard’s services.

Pitchers do take hitting seriously ... no, really GETTY IMAGES

Worley’s World AS TOLD TO ED CONDRAN A WEEKLY DIARY

t this time last year, the Phillies were riding such a wave of success that quite a bit of attention was paid to something as trivial as the pitchers’ batting competition. There is a friendly battle this season among the starters, but little has been made of it since the bottom-feeding Phillies are playing at a pathetic .425 clip at the All-Star break. “We have [a hitting competition] this year, but I don’t know if it’s a priority for us right now,” Worley said. mates Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee, has a decent swing. Hamels is hitting .278 — he could start when he’s not pitching — and Lee is batting .214. Worley has yet to get a hit. “I’ve made contact but right

now I’m not thinking about that,” Worley said. “Hits are nice for me and the other pitchers, but right now all I care about is getting wins. That takes precedence over hits. My job is ultimately to keep the team in the game and go as

deep as I can. If I need to get a bunt down, I need to get it down. It’s part of the game.” So far, so good. Worley is on the plus-side when it comes to successful bunts. “I’m 2-for-3 in bunting situations. I’m doing all right bunting, but I need to be doing all right in every phase of the game. I can hit the ball hard, but I can also pitch deep into games. I have to do more of that and win games for this team with my arm. But I do admit that I enjoy hitting. “You take things seriously here when you’re up to bat, even if you’re a pitcher. (Laughs) If you go up there and not look like you’re going to hit, you’re going to get punched out. So I get in there and go for it. That’s how I am in the box and on the mound. I want to do my job at all times to help this team win.”

Wright joins Sixers as deal altered Swingman still headed to Philly Jack to Warriors Bavcic to N.O. It’s a swinging good time at Sixers camp. The team reportedly acquired another wing player yesterday when it traded for Golden State’s Dorell Wright. The Sixers haven’t confirmed the deal yet. Two NBA superstars — with the egos to match — are debating the greatness of their respective Olympic teams. Lakers star — and the pride of Lower Merion — Kobe Bryant recently said he thought the 2012 U.S. basketball team could beat the 1992 Dream Team. “I don’t know. It’d be a tough one, but I think we’d pull it out,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. Yesterday, former Sixers great Charles Barkley was posed the same question on 97.5 The Fanatic. Predictably, he picked his squad to reign supreme by double digits. “Their point guards weren’t going to beat us. That’s a no-brainer,” Barkey told the radio station. “Other
