Malian website claims government threats Censorship. Editor says

government threatened to shut down website over story about civilians murdered by military

The editor-in-chief of a popular news portal in Mali said Tuesday he took down an account of an Associated Press article Ontario

detailing crimes allegedly committed by the Malian military after receiving two threatening phone calls and an email from Mali’s government. The Paris-based editor said the Malian ministries of defence and communication warned in separate calls they would block his website in Mali, effectively shutting down his business, if he did not immediately pull an article about the investigation

of the alleged crimes. The director of the army’s communications division, DIRPA, denied he made the calls. Sega Diarrah, the editor of Maliactu.net, said that on Tuesday he published a summary of the AP story, which detailed how a team of AP reporters spent six months tracking down the graves of six civilians said to have been killed by the military in the

Man convicted in Stafford killing to get publicly funded lawyer in appeal

Tourists to be charged new fee for electronic application

The man convicted of killing eight-year-old Victoria Stafford should get a publicly funded lawyer as he tries to appeal, Ontario’s highest court ruled Tuesday. Michael Rafferty’s case is too complex for someone with a Grade 9 education in segregation and with no access to a law library to handle on his own with the assistance of duty counsel, Appeal Court Justice Marc Rosenberg ruled.

The federal government is soliciting public comment on a plan to introduce online travel applications as part of the sweeping perimeter security pact with the United States. Foreign nationals who currently do not need a visa to visit Canada would have to successfully apply for an electronic travel authorization and would be charged a new fee before arriving by air.

Alaska. Auction profits from Sarah Palin’s SUV causes city council stir An Alaska community’s sale on eBay of a vehicle used by former Mayor Sarah Palin has caused a stir in small-town politics. The city of Wasilla, just north of Anchorage, auctioned off the 1999 Expedition used by Palin during her second term as mayor on the website. A Fairbanks woman bought it for $10,300, about $8,000 over its value. The city will use the money to replenish its vehicle replacement fund. But Deputy Mayor

wake of France’s intervention to drive out al-Qaida in its former colony. An internal report by the Malian ministry of defence that was described to the AP but never made public said that the civilians were killed by a rogue unit of five Malian soldiers. The ministry of defence has denied the killings.

Colleen Sullivan-Leonard proposed using the funds to restock the local food pantry. That proposal died Monday when Mayor Verne Rupright declined to break a 3-3 council tie. Sullivan-Leonard says it’s unfortunate Rupright is capitalizing on Palin’s name to fatten city coffers. Rupright says it’s just good business when you can get more money than expected for surplus equipment. the associated press
