lasting long enough to reach their 4th anniversary, no one would have predicted that Adam & Eve would survive and thrive long enough to celebrate our 40th anniversary. During those four decades, the

company has faced legal clashes with the federal government, police raids, community protests, and a score of other challenges to become one of the oldest and most respected names in the business community as well as the adult industry. With Adam & Eve turning 40, we decided to celebrate this special milestone with the very people that made it possible – our loyal customers. A few dedicated Adam & Eve employees spent months researching company history, collecting personal stories, scanning old catalogs and building these pages to create a comprehensive and entertaining picture of the company from the day it was founded to the present. In the process, we were all struck by how much and how little things have changed. The lingerie models have much better hair today, and sex toys don’t look like ugly blobs of plastic anymore. We even noticed a few products that we still sell today; they just cost more because of inflation. But the one thing that never changed is Adam & Eve’s devotion to our customers. From 1970 to the present day, people

About Adam & Eve – The Beginning

Not many college students sit down to work on a thesis paper, only to have it turn into a multi-million dollar business. But that’s just how Phil Harvey started Adam & Eve. In 1969, Phil was a student at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Public Health working on his master’s degree in family planning administration. Phil’s work centered on alternative ways to offer condoms. At the time, condoms were available primarily from clinics and pharmacies and were intended mostly for married couples. Factor in the ongoing sexual revolution, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a near-epidemic of unwed teenage mothers in the United States. And the problem was even worse overseas when coupled with low-income families that didn’t have access to condoms at all. Phil had seen the results of such a population explosion first-hand while working in India with CARE International, an organization that fights the underlying causes

by Sunny Webb, and thanks to support of friends, family and members of Hipnautica supporting a childhood nightmare that has lived within Sky, our composer and creative director, for over 20 years “Cyanide Cyanide Your In My Veins”. Being a rock solid Saturday at one of the top dance clubs in Dallas, Hipnautica will be focusing on their most fast paced, high energy dance tracks ranging from synth pop, techno, trance, and delving deep into the acid roots from our industrial scene.

of poverty by giving people the education and other help they need to become self-sufficient. As part of CARE, Phil spent five years creating a program to distribute food to children of poverty stricken families. Those years saw the population of India explode by nearly 60 million people – many of them the very children that Phil was trying to help. This surge in population turned an already bad situation into a heart-breaking tragedy as government agencies and international aid groups were simply incapable of meeting the overwhelming demand for food and help. Deeply affected by the plight of the starving children, Phil decided that providing families with reliable and affordable birth control would prevent similar problems from occurring in the future. And he returned to the United States to bring his idea to life. Phil decided making condoms more accessible was the best way to help combat this rapidly growing problem in the United States and abroad. After presenting his case to his advisor, university officials gave Phil permission to try selling condoms by mail. Phil’s efforts quickly came to the attention of Dr. Tim Black. Dr. Black had just arrived in Chapel Hill after spending several years working overseas in New Guinea and Nigeria. With his firsthand experience, Tim knew the clinics and hospitals in those countries had too many patients and not nearly enough resources to handle condoms or family planning programs. But Phil’s program could help fill in the gaps. The two men developed a two-part plan. They would sell condoms in the United States, and then turn around and use those profits to help fund similar marketing programs in developing countries. Their marketing plan called for advertising and branding condoms just like regular mainstream products and selling them at subsidized prices at a wide range of locations. The low price would make them affordable for almost anyone, while helping to promote their usage and reduce unwanted pregnancies worldwide. But before they could start doing business, they had to face the same obstacle that prevented anyone from selling condoms by mail before – the 1873 Comstock law. The Comstock law made it illegal to send obscene materials, which included condoms, through the U.S. mail. After meeting with various lawyers, Phil and Tim decided the risks were acceptable and the condom mail-order business was born. Phil started by advertising in college newspapers around the country – offering a pack of 21 condoms for $9.50 as well as information about men’s products and family planning. These early ads were very attention getting – one was headlined “What will you get her this Christmas – PREGNANT??” – and customers responded in droves. The special half-gross box was very

popular among college fraternities. Rapidly growing sales confirmed that Phil and Tim had a goldmine on their hands, so they decided to take their experiment to the next level and jump into the business world. Phil started off by expanding advertising efforts to men’s magazines nationwide, while learning everything he could about business

in his limited free time. Meanwhile, Tim went to Kenya to start developing the overseas marketing program. Along with ordering condoms, customers began asking Phil to provide other adult products. Although he was still learning, Phil knew enough to listen to his customers – leading to the creation of the Adam & Eve Catalog. The catalog would turn Phil’s company into a household name nationwide and make Adam & Eve the biggest adult retailer in the country. And it was the same tool that helped put Adam & Eve in the sights of the U.S. Justice Department.

About “The Raid” Nothing else has had such an impact on Adam & Eve’s history as “The Raid of 1986,” an event Adam & Eve employees always refer to in capital letters even around the water cooler. The Raid impacted Adam & Eve the same way the microchip defined IBM or the Model T shaped Ford Motors. The Raid helped unite the employees in a way that nothing else could and give the company a special Us vs. Them attitude that endures even today, decades later. It all happened May 29, 1986. Early that Thursday morning, a squad of 37 armed law enforcement officials descended on Adam & Eve HQ. They pulled employees from taking orders over the phone, they ordered people to stop working at their desks and demanded to see the studio were the movies were made. (No adult movies have ever actually been filmed at Adam & Eve HQ in North Carolina, but almost every visitor still asks to see the studio.)

Wickedly SINsational Femme Fatale: Jai L’ Bait (photos page 14) By: Ms. Misha Morê A true old soul, Jai L’ Bait knows too much for her own good. Abandon at the age of two, she was brought up by gypsies. At an early age, she had the knack to capture the audience’s attention. She was trained to use her looks and talent to her advantage and soon as a weapon. Shimmy and shaking her way on the stage, she caught the attention of the Lollie Bombs where she joined their burlesque group. Now Jai L’ Bait is on her own and on the prowl. A natural seducer, you older guys may want to watch your back! This young temptress is here for the music and mischief. Get ready for trouble... Jai L’ Bait’s birth place is still a mystery as she was raised in the middle of nowhere to a gypsy family of Aztec descent and now resides in Dallas, Texas. In school, she was shy until as a teenager, she let her inner wild child loose. Pulling pranks and getting kicked out of class for rocking the boat was the norm for her. Her sexuality was discovered while she was a young girl. Her mother always made her aware of her body. “If you got it, flaunt it” was her motto. Most of the costumes and clothing she wore were sexy as she made it a point to look good all the time. She does remember that the first person she kissed was a girl and from then on she knew she was bisexual. She had always wanted to perform and thanks to her mother’s motto, a couple of the founding members of the Lollie Bombs approached her in a night club. They talked about performing and it was a dream come true when they asked her to audtition for them. She has been in the group for over three years and loves performing with the Lollie Bombs since it isn’t always classical burlesque and choreography as a young girl and it was burlesque that she had envisioned. She loves to be sexy and seductive! She tries to remove reality when she is on stage and take everyone to a different time and place. She loves to give the audience a system overload by adding a routine with water meteors and fans or blasphemy and candle wax. She feels it is easier to be a burlesque artist today compared back in the 40’s and 50’s since it is accepted due to pop culture and it is because of the mold these pioneers broke that today’s performers are able to do what Jai and her fellow burlesque artists do today. Some of her best qualities is she loves smiling. She works hard for what she truly believes in and would give the shirt off her back for anyone who needed it. Some of her worst qualities is that she doesn’t do enough for herself as much as she does for others. She has been known to be stubborn at times and on occasion have problems with authority. She enjoyes everything from hot wax, fire, tequila to going out on the town, older men and women, rock music and sensual lingerie. Her favorite burlesque role models are Bettie Page and Satan’s Angel.

Her most recognized feature dance is the Nun routine. It is one of the most controversial routines that she has performed. She has had people walk out, storm off, requested it not to be performed because it was too much and even had church protestors at a show. While other people love it! She recounts the Clubhouse as being her favorite nightclub to perform in. The Clubhouse has let her use the club as her playground. As an entertainer, she loves learning new things and reconstructing everything she does to make it sexier. Her sensual love making on stage and a bit of fun are what makes her exciting to watch. Her revolving door is continuously in motion as she keeps an open mind for new traits to exapnd her sexuality. Fans, water meteors, twirling and fire eating are her specialty now but she’s just getting started. She loves rock music, corsets, challenges, knee high boots, bad boys and playing in the rain. She envisions adding aerial hoops, sword swallowing and hooping to her repertoire. In the future, she plans to work with bands on stage and collaborating on shows and performances. Recently, she has mixed water meteors into her routines along fans, twirling and fire eating. Don’t expect just one...she is intent on performing all of them in one song. When I questioned her on what three things she would bring on an island if she was stranded on it, she replied that she would take her Gir stuffed animal, phone and fire eating kit. Her hobbies include twirling, spinning meteors, dancing, playing with fire, photography and her doggies and kitty cat. Her favorite passions and indulgences are making art and having fun while doing it. She thanks her lucky stars every time she looks around and exclaims that she gets to play for a living. Her ultimate fetishes are older men, women, martial marts, tickling and voyeurism. Her long range golas is to remain a performing artist while working with bands on stage would be the ultimate goal. Her dream has always been performing with bands and now she is making that her reality. The purpose of her performances are to take audiences away from the mundane and give their brain a shock while rocking out to their favorite musicians. She recently performed with Marquis of Vaudeville in A Clockwork Wonderland: Through Aether and Mysterium at the Curtain Club and a Valentine show at the Pocket Sandwich Theater with the Lollie Bombs. Whatever you do, you won’t want to miss Jai L’ Bait’s next peformance on May 6th at the Lakewood Theater for Viva Dallas Burlesque-Viva la Revolucion! Household Gender Roles

by Stever (Dr Z) Zarella Note: This is going to be a deparure from normal size related stuff. I guess I just need to vent a bit. Earlier today, I was talking to a female friend of mine and I was told that I have habits of an “old woman” when it comes to what we called in the 80’s as home economics. This made me a bit unnerved to say the least. But the more I thought about it the funnier it seemed. First of all, as anyone that ever lived with me can tell you, household cleaning and chores was never a priority or for that matter a necessity. I am by nature a messy person and I generally do not care. As of late, that has changed a bit and I have found myself amassing the skills that I was taught and observed over my lifetime. Second, I don’t think that knowing or displaying household management skills is a gender issue. It may have been 75 years ago, but in this age, with the large amount of single households or even single parent households, I think these skills are vital in getting through the week. And thirdly, I think in our fast paced, fast food, low tolerance for anything that takes time life, we are losing a lot of these skills and simply do whatever is more convenient. For example, the issue that came up today. My friends daughter had a hooded sweat jacket in which the drawstring got pulled out so that it only came out of one side. My friend was ready to donate this jacket to a clothing drive (which I by no means think is a bad idea if it didn’t fit). But she had only bought it a month ago. To me, that is waste. She thought she would have to pay more to fix it than to get a new one. My solution was to use a safety pin and coax the string out of the other side so both end of the drawstring were available. It took 3 minutes and saved $30. I was called and old woman for my efforts. This was in jest of course, and it was appreciated, but it wasn’t the first time I had a household skill mocked as “un-genderly” I learned a few things from my

mom, like how to iron and sew. I still suck at both. I learned a lot from an ex-roommate and best friend for life named Randy. He taught me how to housekeep “Texas style” Here are a few things Randy taught

me: Always stack dishes, cups, etc upside down in the cabinets. You do this for two reasons; to keep dust from getting on them and to prevent bugs from going across them. In the college house we lived in, this was absolutely necessary. Hanging clothes in the bathroom while you take a hot shower helps remove wrinkles. When ironing, use heavy starch on the collars, around the buttons and (if long sleeved) cuffs of a shirt. Just use water on the rest and iron it out. Throw leftovers out after 3 days (I grew up in a house of 7, so leftovers were rarely an issue). How to use a dishwasher. I never had one until I lived with Randy and of course, I tried to use regular dish soap in it. The quote from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory came to mind “Bubbles, bubbles everywhere, but not a drop to drink.” Vinegar cleans a lot of stuff. Bleach is great for cleaning glass jars (we used to make Sun Tea, which he also taught me). I learned a lot more as life went on. For instance, you should store batteries no in use in the freezer to keep them fresh. Putting a cap full of olive oil (or any vegetable oil) in a pot of boiling water will keep pasta from sticking. Drier sheets can be used twice. Once they have been used in the drier, you can wash them with the next load and the softener is still viable. The value of double stick Velcro in keeping up with remote controls. And much, much more. I never saw any of these as a “gender” role, but as keys to keep everything working smoothly. So I guess if I live like an “old woman” then people ought to get used to it, because I am not going to change.

THE HARD SCORE.com ers. Like when the Colts cut safety Bob Sanders.

In a moment of unintentional awareness it crossed my mind that I should seek out fellow sports enthusiasts and gain some insight as to what they felt the current state of the sports union was. Or at the least, get them to buy me a few beers and wings while watching some games. I got both.

most of them didn’t have any respect for them and wanted to avoid them at all costs. Trying to get an NFL players autograph is more frustrating than trying to drive in peak rush hour traffic.

The wings were hot and the viewpoints were hotter.

Me? I think the NFL and players union really ought to get a better picture of what the fans want, quit rubbing everyone’s nose in their junk, and work toward getting a better product on the field.

First and foremost all of those polled were totally against what was happening with the NFL and the players. They didn’t want a strike, they didn’t want a lockout, and they didn’t want to hear anything about a fight over money. While agreeing that some changes were necessary they felt most of this was grandstanding and could take place without all the posturing. Most thought the fans were being abused and treated shabbily by both sides. An interesting issue that kept cropping up was the antagonism over owners building these stadiums and selling mostly to corporations and pricing the regular fans out of the seating. Their point being, why should they feel any empathy or have support for owners that basically don’t want them in the stadiums? How could they when beers cost $10 and hot dogs $7.50? I can get a six pack of beer and a pack of doggies for $10 and have a great time on my patio. A guy with a wife and two kids can count on forking over close to $200 for a trip to a NFL game. That’s a steep price to pay in any economy let alone one that’s struggling. As far as the players go, these fans felt

METRO ANE

MAGAZINE

They also feel that for now, while these “negotiations” are under way, both sides want the support of the fans, but when all this gets resolved, it’s going to be back to the same old same old and they’ll be dusted.

And by the way, one gnarly old chap (yeah, me) came up with a crowd pleasing solution: have a “fan-out”. Translation: don’t go to games and don’t buy NFL products. This was met with a standing roar of approval. Yea me! You can bet your bottom dollar if the fans ever did rebel, the media and advertisers would have more pressure on the NFL and players than all the force it takes to blow a volcano. Whoa. When the concept of possible fan-outs was brought to several establishments across the area (yeah, I did it), the results were almost always the same: most are beginning to like the idea of fans using their wallets to effect change, and there hasn’t even been a strike or lockout yet. Before that gets to the level of boring, which is about now, let’s move ‘er along. NFL You can never discount how suck up the national media (re:ESPN and the NFL channel) can be when discussing the play-

For the short time he was on the market he was spoken about like he was the next savior for a team that was only a player or two away from winning the Super Bowl. When I heard those comments I wanted to do what my dogs do and barf in my bowls. Sanders has played in only nine games the last three years, and only three games the last two. All because of injuries. THAT’S a Pro Bowl player? A team savior? A season changer? The only changes Sanders can make for a team without getting hurt is his shorts and socks. He managed to land a one year contract with the Chargers. I’ve heard it was incentive loaded, which was the smart thing to do, but the rest of the AFC West has been slapping themselves on the back with joy. If he gets on the field, and that’s a big IF, offensive coordinators are gonna go after him like teenyboppers to a rock star. The NFL draft is always a fun time of the year, you know, for fantasy’s about who’s gonna come in and make your team so much better at a position that they’re bound to beat your hated rival(s) and make the playoffs. I’m hoping that whether or not the NFL gets to expand to 18 games or not, that they’ll raise the allotment of players that each team can have active and on the practice squads. Only so many of the 300 draftee’s actually make the squads, and only a small percentage of those start or make any kind of a contribution their first year or two. That being the case, by allowing teams to have more players it makes sense that they could develop them into pro players and not have to cut them. Or even raise the allotment but keep the number that can be active on game day at 53. Or ex-

pand the practice squad and restrict the number of players that can be grabbed by another team.

Nobody’s questioning Jerry Jones for wanting to win, but the number of people that believe he can or will draft to fit the Cowboys needs has dwindled to a brave few, and they most likely practice Druid rituals. NCAAMF There were many folks across our fair nation that bellowed Ohio State was given preferential treatment in how the sanctions were handed to them following the news that five of their top players had been caught selling memorabilia to a local tattoo shop owner. And got free or highly discounted tattoos. And cars for several day “test drives”. Instead of immediate suspensions, which would have kept them out of the Sugar Bowl, the players were given five game suspensions for the start of the 2011 season. Two major allegations have now surfaced, that Coach Tressell knew of the players conduct as early as April of 2009, and the lobbying of the NCAA by Big 10 Commissioner Jim Delany to allow the players to remain active and suffer the suspension at the start of the following season. Ohio State was playing Arkansas in the Sugar, and if those OSU players had been deactivated the game would pretty much have been meaningless, Arkansas would have butchered them. The questions now focus on the NCAAA as to its own merit, integrity, and conduct for these suspensions. Did the NCAA allow the suspensions to be delayed so the Sugar Bowl would be an event that highlighted the NCAAMF programs, and keep the money, which

would be barrels full from media and advertisers, rolling in?

Dallas is right smack dab in the middle of mix. And climbing.

Frankly, you cannot hold student athletes to a higher degree of conduct than the sponsoring association.

Currently you have Minnesota, Anaheim, and Nashville sitting right below the critical eighth spot, the cutoff for getting into the postseason. For right now I’d be looking to pull away from those three and let that effort keep me up in the standings.

As far as Tressell goes, he apparently never went to OSU’s Athletic Director (this is where plausible deniability inserts itself,) never counseled the players, never notified the school administration, and never informed the NCAA. OSU continues to maintain that the school was not informed of the allegations until Dec 7 of 2010 and they immediately launched their investigation the following day. By the NCAA not punishing the players immediately it gave them the opportunity to leave school early and enter the NFL’s draft, which would have effectively negated any punishment. So far it’s not been noted that any of the players have opted out of the school to join the NFL. NHL If this isn’t your sport right now, then you need to elevate it up to the top. Yeah, I know, there’s a race goin’ on in the NBA and the Dallas Mavericks, but don’t be left out in the cold by only being able to support one team. All you hardnosed football junkies need to be scrintchin’ down on the sofa with an ice cold one then get red hot over what these Dallas Stars are doing. When Dallas finished the four game swing through the West they captured seven of a possible eight points and moved up to fifth in the standings. Normally with 79 points and sixteen games left this’d be the time to looking forward to the end games. Normally. But, this ain’t been a normal season and these haven’t been the Stars of the last few years. Not by a long shot. The NHL average for winning a game with a comeback rally when trailing going into the third period is three. The Stars now have nine. The Western Conference has the tightest grouping of teams fighting for the playoffs that the NHL has seen in years and

METRO ANE

There’s no idea when the Stars lead scorer, Brad Richards, will be back, that concussion has apparently been lingering and that’s not the thing you wanna mess with. Considering that hockey is one of the most physical of the contact sports out there, and that’s steadily being ratcheted up nearing the season end, they’ll be more careful before letting him back on the ice in full contact. When the playoffs start, vicious hits are the standard and it gets harder from there, so Richards has to be ready. The Stars now have the next seven games at home, each one a team that is either in the top eight or fighting on the bubble. Of the remaining nine games to finish the season off, seven are away and four of them are back to back, and one of those is Colorado on a home and away. That’s sixteen games remaining with probably the toughest schedule in the NHL. When the playoffs begin there’s no bye series for the top teams, the finishers all hit the ice and

In the East, for all the talk throughout the season of the Celtics being old, that apparently hasn’t slowed them, hobbled them, or tripped them up. They’re the team to beat. They do have some challengers and you have look at Chicago, Miami, and Orlando. These four probably are heading for the fight, but the surprise team that just might mess things up are the Knicks. The Knicks have made New York fun and relevant again, two words the basketball world hasn’t heard in years from there. Maybe they’ll get a chance to lead off against the Heat and make them cry again. Ouch. The West was thought to be owned by the Spurs, Mavericks, Lakers, and Thunder, but unbelievably the Nuggets are in this thing. After trading Melo and Billups most thought Denver’s demise was a foregone conclusion, but for now they’ve forced that aside. Maybe they don’t make it deep, but they’ll make it interesting. Is there a dark horse in the mix? I can’t see New Orleans, Memphis, or Portland seriously making a challenge, so not in the West. The only shot in the East might be Atlanta but I can’t see the Hawks closing out a series, even in the first round. Readers Response:

NBA

Two Dogs:

The NBA’s got nineteen regular season games left and counting. Ok, it’s not as jam packed as the NHL, and it doesn’t have the hits and blood of the NHL, and the top teams are gonna feed on and weed out the late arrivals like sharks, but when they get to the second round, bring on the beer and pizza’s because that’s where the action is truly gonna get started.

Are the Heat in danger of losing their season? It looks like they can’t beat a team with a winning record and they now appear to be emotionally weak. Were they really crying in the locker room? I’m a Magic fan and this would be great news.

In the upper ranks of each conference you’re probably not gonna see much shuffling around in the standings unless an injury nails somebody. From the five slots on down to eight, that might get a bit jumpy, but that’s probably not gonna include anybody from below there now. So the NBA is setting the stage for its playoffs and not much mystery is riding that wave.

Is it possible they implode and miss the playoffs? That’s highly doubtful, but instead of them making a run deep, it’s more than probably they’re out after the first round. Yes, there were tears in the locker room, not what fans want to hear, that’s for sure, especially for a regular sea-

son game. After that last loss to the Bulls, Wade was quoted as saying: “the Heat are exactly what everyone wanted, losing games. The world is better now because the Heat is losing”. I’d say the pressure is getting to them. That, and the Big 3 aren’t, as Chris Bosh isn’t an equal part of that formula. With Wade and James having problems closing out close games, this is great TV. TD Two Dogs: Does Texas get to the Final Four this year or even make it to the dance? Lenny Ft Worth Lenny: At times they’ve played better than they looked, but they’ve also played worse than they should have. I say the Sweet Sixteen is a good goal for them. Notre Dame and Pittsburgh just may keep surprising people this year. TD Two Dogs: You have no idea what the Cowboys are going to do in this draft or how these new coaches are going to run this team and I’m surprised your paper even lets you write sports. Our secondary just had a bad year and will recover. Frank Ennis Frank: Hey, I’m surprised my paper lets me write about sports. But then we started using it at concerts on Fridays, our Little Bro’s T-Ball game on Sundays, and our office rooftop on Weekdays (brag-worthy views). continued from page 3... The law enforcement officials flooded through the building, ordering them to report to the warehouse for questioning, processing and photographing. A number of Adam & Eve employees described their experiences that day in court affidavits. Jodi was the receptionist when law enforcement officials from two different counties, federal postal inspectors from North Carolina and Utah, and the state bureau of investigation demanded entry, “…the man in the brown suit said: ‘You tell him if you do not open the door immediately, we will kick it in.’”

state anti-pornography taskforce.” The Raid marked the beginning of an 8 year legal battle over the First Amendment, government officials imposing their beliefs on others, and your right to privacy in your own home.

Skip, director of operations, described the day in an interview with the Chapel Hill Independent. “They acted like it was a drug raid, and I guess we were a real disappointment to them. The only weapons people had were their boxcutter knives. And I had to tell the officers, I said, ‘There’s no videos produced here. We just got things in boxes.’”

The first obscenity court case was held in Alamance County on March 20, 1987 , nearly a full year after The Raid. Obscenity

Shirley was taking customer orders that morning when she was approached by a man with a badge who ordered her to hang up. Shirley said she didn’t have any other choice than to go to the warehouse. “All of the employees were told that we had to turn in any concealed weapons, that we would be questioned, that after we were questioned we would be brought to the back door of the warehouse, and that we could not leave the building until we had a [grand jury] subpoena…The agents treated us like criminals and tried to scare us.” Grainger Barrett, a local attorney Phil contacted, appeared on the scene around 10:30 that morning. In an affidavit, Barrett described the scene as the most “intrusive and general a search as I have witnessed. It was clear to me that the majority of employees held there were intimidated… I hope never again to be called upon to provide legal counsel under such distressing circumstances and conduct by government officials.” Phil, who was in New York at the time, caught the first available flight. He arrived later that afternoon to find a deserted parking lot and a mostly empty building, save the officials who had broken into his desk and rifled through it. “Our offices resembled a battlefield after a battle,” Phil wrote in his book The Government vs. Erotica. Phil wrote that the he showed up the next day not knowing what to expect – only to find nearly everyone there and ready to work. One person even came back to finish filling out a job application, according to reporter Melinda Ruley. “They didn’t like being pushed around by a bunch of bullies any more than I did, and they weren’t about to take it lying down,” Phil wrote in his book. But The Raid was merely the opening shot from what officials described as a “federal-

About The Legal Battle

After the excitement of The Raid, the battle entered the courtroom. It was these legal battles that would determine the fate of Adam & Eve as well as the ability of the American public to buy and use adult products in their own homes.

is a difficult standard to define, as it depends entirely on the definition of the local community. So, the standards of obscenity not only differ from state to state but also county to county. Government officials picked Alamance County as their test case because it was one of the more conservative counties in the immediate area. The local district attorney charged Phil with nine counts disseminating obscenity and a possible 45 years in jail. The obscenity trial lasted less than one week, included witnesses from the company and the local anti-Adam & Eve preacher, as well as a full day of watching an assortment of adult movies. After less than an hour of deliberation, the jury returned a unanimous not guilty verdict. But the not guilty verdict seemed to make federal officials more determined to pursue Adam & Eve. The U.S. Department of Justice had created a program called “Project Postporn” that would identify major mailorder adult companies, and then prosecute the companies simultaneously in multiple court districts nationwide. The court efforts wouldn’t just be limited to the company executives either; prosecutors would target spouses and families of employees for investigation. The idea was to drown Adam & Eve and other adult retailers with so many legal bills and red tape that they couldn’t afford to stay in business. A growing number of adult retailers began getting hit with massive fines, jail time and more. At the same time, prosecutors in Utah, Kentucky and Alabama began talking about pursuing possible obscenity cases against Adam & Eve. But Phil wasn’t about to back down. Instead, he filed a civil lawsuit against the Justice Department and then Attorney General Richard Thornburg

alleging that “Project Postporn” constituted a deliberate and systematic abuse of power and an attack on the First Amendment. Meanwhile, the court cases and police raids kept coming. Alabama postal inspectors raided the company twice between December 1992 and May 1993, even going as far as to sleep overnight in our customer service department to make sure Adam & Eve employees didn’t tamper with anything. They began trying to intimidate and harass employees. And they didn’t just limit their “investigation” to Adam & Eve. They seized the customer lists and went door to door all over Alabama, spending hundreds of hours questioning Adam & Eve customers and trying to embarrass them. But Phil was also causing waves in Washington, D.C. After investing millions of dollars in trials and man-hours, the government was still unable to find anything to charge him with. Additionally, the civil lawsuit hanging over the Justice Department was just as embarrassing, especially with a new administration taking office earlier that year. So, there wasn’t much surprise when Phil and his lawyers heard that the Justice Department was interested in making a deal. After a somewhat tense conference, Phil agreed to drop his civil lawsuit and plead guilty to a single charge in Alabama concerning the font size used in a mailing label. In exchange, the government agreed to stop pursuing obscenity charges for any act occurring before the settlement date. In the end, Adam & Eve spent roughly $3 million dollars fighting the federal government (that would be worth more than $5 million today). There’s no telling how much of your tax dollars the federal and state governments wasted investigating and harassing Adam & Eve. But more importantly, the settlement effectively marked the end of the multi-district strategy from Project Postporn, leaving Americans significantly more free to enjoy adult materials in the comfort and privacy of their own homes.

About the Adam & Eve Catalog It all started with condoms. The first Adam & Eve catalog was mailed in 1971. It was sent to a list of people who had ordered condoms through the mail by answering small ads in the back of college newspapers and magazines like Swank, Penthouse, Playboy, Gallery and other “men’s publications.” Phil Harvey and Dr. Tim Black, the founders of Adam & Eve, were breaking the 1873 Comstock Law that made it illegal to send contraceptives through the U.S. Mail.

Voted America’s #1 Adult Weekly

The Comstock Law applied to birth control aids, sexually explicit material and erotic literature. After meeting with lawyers in 1971 Phil & Tim sent out the first Adam & Eve mail-order catalog. By 1973 the Comstock Laws had almost all been repealed and the Adam & Eve business was in full swing. Now that condom sales were legal through the U.S. mail, it was time to provide customers other things they would want to have with their condom purchases. Through diligent research of its customers’ wishes, America’s first mainstream adult catalog was born. Alongside condoms the latest in vibrators, “how-to” sex books, comedy LP records, lingerie, “lounge attire” (fancy “his & hers” bathrobes) and a “Complete Monogrammed 40-Piece Crystal Bar Set” (for $22.49) were offered. Then came the adult “personal health devices” aka vibrators. It’s not that Americans have never bought vibrators through the mail before. A page from a Sears catalog of home electrical appliances from 1918 includes a portable vibrator with attachments billed as, ”a very useful and satisfactory for home service.” The use of vibrators for “hysteria” was very common among middle class women of virtue –– until they started appearing in pornographic films of the 1920s. These films were viewed by male-only audiences in basements and garages during sessions called “smokers.” However, due to the second wave of the Feminist Movement, the idea that women can, and should be, sexually independent of men while learning more about their own bodies contributed to a rise in vibrator purchases, mostly from drug stores where a generic device was sold as a “relief from muscle pain.” To avoid the knowing wink of some drug store clerks, buying a vibrator through the mail came back in vogue, in part thanks to Adam & Eve. Then, in 1984 Crystal Breeze became the first touted XXX star to grace an Adam & Eve catalog cover. (Earlier in the decade, Desire Cousteau had appeared). By now video sales, mostly in VHS, were becoming a larger part of the catalog. A spread featured Crystal’s movies, “Pink Lagoon” and “Panty Raid.” She modeled the “Marcella” baby doll, “Sweet Tart” bra and panty set, endorsed massage oils and helped Buck Adams accept a “Recto-Prostate Stimulator” up his butt. The Adam & Eve catalog also included Crystal’s “Squirmy Squirrel Vibrator,” a crude prototype of the Rabbit Vibrator so popular today. After adult video stars started appearing on the cover of the Adam & Eve catalogs, the company began investing in the production of adult movies. Working with companies like Wicked and Digital Playground, Adam & Eve helped produce major titles starring Jenna Jameson, Asia Carrera, and Tera Patrick. Adam & Eve moved from selling gag gifts, hobby kits and “head shop” materials to marketing their movies and adult novelties full-on in the catalog. Eventually the catalog morphed into what customers today recognize as the Adam & Eve catalog.

Show Review; Viva Dallas Burlesque by W.R. Maxwell

The Mardi Gras show started with Ruby Joule – and why not. She’s a statuesque redhead who is a professional actresses and gorgeous. In her first of three acts, she had her hands all over herself. For the life of me, I can not figure out why she has to give herself a massage. There should be a line around the block, of men eager to give her a full body rub-down.

Bayou’, but she cooked up a big pot of gumbo while doing her act. I think the best part was the fact she was wearing all the ingredients. Chicken, garlic, onions, rice and Andouille sausage all went into the big pot. To make her gumbo extra spicy, she added her secret ingredient – a naked girl. I’m sure this is NOT in the Julia Childs’ cookbook. Honey Cocoa Bordeauxx showed the audience why a woman should never,

Phoebe Fireball was a bundle of samba inspired, carnival energy. As her stage name suggests, she’s got the hottest moves this side of Rio de Janeiro. I think the hip-shaking would have kept her tassels spinning until 4am, had it not been for the cold front that blew through at midnight. Miss Fireball’s performance was her first on the Viva Dallas stage and only the second time she has stripped for an audience. Legally, there is not much more she can show us at the Lakewood Theater, but we hope she’ll show us again and again and . . . you get the idea. I never get bored with a great looking girl, especially when she’s wearing practically nothing at all. Miss Jolie Goodnight got the crowd into the New Orleans Mardi Gras spirit with a jazzy rendition of ‘When the Saints go Marching in’. This girl can really sing; no lip-sync here. I would have been singing along with the rest of the audience, but I was spell-bound by Julie’s breast-quaking movements. She must be using some heavy duty glue; otherwise her pasties would have flown into the balcony! Miss Aviva Voila’s number was 100% swamp Cajun. Not only did she dance around to the tune of ‘Down on the

The surprise act came right after intermission. Le Pink Pouvoir did a good job of recreating the chair-dance scene from the movie ‘Burlesque’ including hair whips and synchronized shimmies in tight corsets. Le Pink is from The Girl’s Room – a dance and fitness studio in Dallas, Frisco and Rockwall and may be the subject of a future article if Karyn (the owner) can ever make room between her pole-dancing lessons to give me an interview. ever wear a dress made of gold lame. The fabric is so fluid, her dress just seemed to melt off of her body. Her second number was a voodoo priestess routine and she showed the crowd a little more of her black magic. Miss Bordeauxx is traveling to Atlanta Georgia next week end to be in the first ever ‘Southern Fried Burlesque Festival’ – a three day display of beautiful women served up southern-style. Finger licking good.

The second half of the show seemed to embrace the spirit of Mardi Gras – lots of heavy drinking, both on stage and off. Vivienne Vermuth did a very funny drunken strip-tease to the tune of The Scorpion’s ‘Rock you like a Hurricane’, however I think she may have been hitting the bottle back stage, because her pasties were glued on her butt, not her breasts.

I have ever seen with her clothes off. In addition to being drop-dead gorgeous, she is a talented actress, biology student and a frog lover, which is different from being a frog kisser. She is also looking for a little romance in her life – really. But guys, you’ll have to be flexible. She can only see you on Tuesdays and Thursdays between Physics lecture and Calculus class. The mega-voluptuous Donna Denise has been nominated for the Texas Newcomer of the Year Award for the burlesque and pin-up scene. (The show for this award will be May 21, 2011 at the Lakewood.) Yes, there really is such an award and I’m sure the trophy is a lot more titillating than that old, sex-less Oscar trophy. Do not call Donna-Denise ‘D-D’. That pair of hers has got to be at least a ‘G’ and I don’t mean G-rated, as in for general audiences. While Miss Denise has been stripping for some time, she has just recently found the thrill of burlesque. And I have just now found the thrill of Miss Denise; although, for me it’s purely visual.

Next month, the Viva Dallas Burlesque show will be completely different and will feature a traveling troupe from St. Louis. Check them out at www. vivadallasburlesque in a few days for Levi Peu Chapeau is the tallest woman all the details. www.METROANE.com Page 15 Voted America’s #1 Adult Weekly

(from page 5) give them attention. Spoil them by being friendly and showing concern. But you must be genuine. Men will know you are after their wallets so don’t just jump into a sales pitch right away, unless they ask you for prices. Here is a sales paradox: if your client gives you a reason for buying or not buying based on something that seems logical for him, you can bet there’s an emotion behind his decision. I have had numerous men tell me they might get dances--but they want to think about it. I’ll spend time with a client, maybe even score a lap dance or two from him, and then after my VIP pitch, they will say, “Oh, well, let me think about it,” or “Come back later when I am drunk and ready to spend money!” The only thing this means to you is that you have to try a little harder to figure out what your client really needs to feel (or not feel) in order to decide that your company is beneficial enough for him to pay for the privilege of spend-

This leads me to my next point: One of the most basic rules of selling is that people do not buy a product or service for what it is, but for what it can do for them, or the way it makes them feel. How do you persuade your client to pay for all of the benefits of your company, while uncovering his deeper needs to potentially end up in the VIP room or dance area for most of the night? The answer: create value. If you get creative in your interactions with your clients, as we have mentioned above, you will be the embodiment of fulfilling their needs. You will then be valuable to them. Any dancer can go up and ask a customer, “wanna dance?” But the smart dancer can deliver a magnetic energy that keeps their customers coming back for more or their vibrant personality that makes them feel secure and admired!good time.

6 Tips for Good Photos / Camera Phone

1. Use the highest resolution. Many camera phones have the option of

changing the resolution of the pictures. Always shoot in the maximum resolution so you can capture the maximum details. 2. The best phone camera pictures are taken in plenty of light. Turn off the flash when it is not required. 3. Hold it steady - Do you often complain of blurry images while shooting with your phone camera? There is a possibility it has a slow shutter speed and is prone to blurs with little movement. Often there is a delay between the release of the shutter and the actual click of the phone. That is the moment when a little movement will create bad blurs. Anticipate shutter lag. Get used to your camera phone’s timing. Like many consumer digital cameras, there’s most likely a delay between the exact moment you press the shutter button and when your camera phone captures the image. Holding the camera really steady and even after the shutter is released, keep it steady for a few seconds more just to be sure. Also, in low light, camera phones slow the shutter speed to let in more light and have a longer opportunity to capture movement. Hold the camera phone with both hands and brace your upper arms against your body when you shoot. 4. Avoid zooming in - The built-in zoom in most phone cameras are not optical but digital. Hence, it is advisable to not zoom in to compose a picture because you are not really zooming. Move closer to the subject. Also if the background of your picture is cluttered and the lighting is questionable, fill the frame of your camera phone by moving in closer instead of zooming. 5.Avoid the too much Yellow Photo- An increasing number of camera phones come with adjustable white balance, which allows you to modify color balance in your images based on shooting conditions. Experiment with this feature to get a good feeling for the impact that it has on your images. Read your manual to learn how it works on your phone. 6. Keep your lens clean.
