DEAR METANOIA FAMILY: Time flies when you are having fun! Though the days have sometimes been long, the years have truly been short as we look back over ten years of growth at Metanoia. What began as a faithful effort of churches in the South Carolina Cooperative Baptist Fellowship has become a diverse movement of people that is gaining even more steam as we head into our next ten years. If you’ve followed us over the past ten years, you’ve watched us go from a small after-school program to a holistic community development movement. You’ve seen our annual budget grow by over 600% as we’ve added housing development, economic development and community gardening to our targeted efforts. Along the way you’ve seen us win local, state and national recognition. Through all of this growth it seems that change has been the one constant. Still, what has not changed for us is as important as what has changed over the past ten years. Metanoia remains committed to our core values of being community based, asset driven and rooted in faith. It is these values, particularly being community based and asset driven, that have distinguished Metanoia from many other efforts in our region. Indeed, as we enter the next ten years, we are excited that our work is becoming a model for many interested in doing similar work in other communities across our state. We are more energized and excited about our work than ever before. We now know from experience that 10 years of growth is earned through a total of 3,650 days of hard work, integrity and faith. As you read this year’s special annual report, we invite you to take a few minutes to celebrate our past, consider our values and programs and look forward to the future. Metanoia leads a successful campaign to keep Chicora Elementary School open and located in the community. The victory will ultimately lead to the construction of a new Elementary School in our neighborhood in 2014.

Bill Stanfield and Evelyn Oliveira are commissioned by Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of South Carolina to begin a year of listening in North Charleston and begin a work that would affect child poverty in the area. The couple starts work in North Charleston after spending two months studying national best practices in Chicago, Washington, DC and Miami.

Metanoia builds a partnership with St. Matthew Baptist Church and moves its offices into the church, starting its first programming in the form of the Young Leaders Program, a daily after-school program for seventeen students first through fourth grade who are identified as showing leadership potential.

Students in Metanoia’s Freedom School kick off a campaign to change traffic dangers around the community. The campaign results in the reduction of speed limits throughout the community, more stop signs around the school and more speed limit signs throughout the neighborhood.

By partnering with the SC Housing Finance and Development Authority, Metanoia begins an Owner Occupied Repair program to repair homes for low-income homeowners in our community.

Metanoia completes the renovation and sale of its first two homes to increase the homeownership rate in Chicora/Cherokee.

Metanoia kicks off its first Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School teaching students a love of reading and citizenship in equal measure for an entire day for five weeks during the summer.

The HUB Minority Contractor Training academy, funded in large part by a $20,000 grant that Metanoia leveraged from the SC Department of Commerce, graduates over sixty small contractors in better business skills over two six week semesters.

3 Metanoia leverages a $140,000 grant from the SC Department of Commerce to help construct the Zucker Family Production Kitchen at the Lowcountry Food Bank. The facility will provide job training in the culinary arts and provide food for students in our after-school and summer programs.

Metanoia is recognized as one of ten “2009 angels” in South Carolina by the SC Secretary of State. “Angels” are non-profits that offer exemplary programming with low overhead costs.

Staff from MWV Specialty Chemicals joins the 110 students at Metanoia’s Freedom School to make a special announcement. MWV donates the first $150,000 for the Youth Entrepreneurship and Volunteer Center $500,000 Capital Campaign.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke lifts up Metanoia as a national best practice in a speech to a Washington DC Community Development Conference: “ Metanoia CDC...has visibly improved the hardest hit communities (in North Charleson).”

Metanoia’s students start a small business, Isoke Sisters Jewelry. Within a few months Hodari Brothers Screen Printing will also begin, allowing students to earn modest income as they learn essential job skills. Metanoia and North Charleston Police Department win one of six national awards from the Metlife Foundation for community police partnerships. The award recognizes that on one street where Metanoia redeveloped six homes, the violent crime rate dropped 64% and overall violent crime in the neighborhood went down by 23%.

Metanoia completes a partnership with the College of Charleston Masters of Public Administration Program that helps us to establish our Integrated Leadership Development Standards, a series of developmentally appropriate standards for developing student leaders in the key areas of Character, Excellence and Presence.

The South Carolina Cooperative Baptist Fellowship celebrates ten years since commissioning two ‘Urban Ministers’ to serve in North Charleston to begin what would become Metanoia.


ASSET DRIVEN Based on the research of John McKnight and Jodi Kretzman, we use an innovative approach to community development that focuses on investing in community strengths rather than just identifying and trying to fix problems. We seek to invest in people on their best day rather than just trying to save them on their worst day. By investing in neighborhood assets to build leaders, establish quality housing and generate economic development, we make efficient use of the resources entrusted to us because assets always carry the capacity to generate a solid return for the eventual success of our neighborhood.

We recognize Young People are assets to our community. So we grow their leadership capacity in the areas of Character, Excellence and Presence.

Metanoia contributes to the safety and stability of our neighborhood by working to establish quality affordable housing in our community.

COMMUNITY DRIVEN We believe that the people who live in the communities we serve are the real experts on our neighborhoods. No initiative is undertaken at Metanoia without community support and we always seek to implement the Iron Rule of community organizing – to never do for someone

else what they can already do for themselves. For these reasons Metanoia is controlled by community residents who invest their time and energy to create opportunities for themselves and our communities.

The Chicora Place Community Garden is led, maintained and utilized by community residents who feel a sense of ownership over the garden for the time they’ve put into making it grow.

This summer we put our community based principals to work as students led a community march against a recent uptick in neighborhood violence.


ROOTED IN FAITH We are a movement that seeks to become ‘good ground’ for people to nurture and grow their faith in God and one another. Within our movement, there are people with a wide variety of faith expression and no faith expressions. While we don’t push our Christian faith onto others, neither does anyone have to check their faith at the door to become a part of our work. We believe that we are working alongside God who desires the health and renewal of all communities in this world.

Students at Metanoia exercise their faith by frequently volunteering at a local senior center in our community.

Diverse groups volunteer alongside residents in our community to help us accomplish our mission. Many do so out of a love of God and their neighbor.



BUILD LEADERS Over nine years of Youth Leadership Development programming, Metanoia has grown from a small after-school program with 17

students in first through fourth grades. We now offer year-round opportunities for leadership development to students at every level from first grade through college.

BRENDA ALFARO is in the 5th grade at Chicora Elementary School, and she has been attending Metanoia since the first grade. Despite English being her second language, Brenda maintains a strong B average in school. In addition to good grades, she shows excellent leadership traits. Her strongest character assets are consistency, honesty, and optimism. This is part of why she was student of the year last year. As she looks forward to middle school next year, we will continue to offer Brenda an environment where she can grow her leadership skills as we now work with students from first grade through to high school.

ESTABLISH QUALITY HOUSING Metanoia’s housing efforts began with a focus on

homeownership and has since branched out to support a variety of housing options for our community. We now offer financial literacy for individuals through seven week classes that cover budgeting, credit repair and qualifying to purchase a home. In 2012, the City of North Charleston also awarded Metanoia with the stewardship of its Owner Occupied Repair Program to repair the homes of low income homeowners.

LISA MCLEAN became a Metanoia homeowner in November of 2008 when her two sons were 15 and 11. Supporters may remember that Lisa and her sons were on the front page of the Post and Courier because Metanoia had arranged to finance homebuyers with a local bank even as the economy was taking a turn for the worse. Since that time, she has joined Metanoia’s Board of Directors ,and has begun to work with us on generating positive change in the community.


Metanoia has pursued numerous initiatives to generate economic development in our community. From aiding minority contractor training academies to running a local farmer’s market in years past to our current efforts to work with the city to attract a local grocery store and grow young entrepreneurs, Metanoia aims to generate economic development in many different ways.

KERRIONNE GILES came to Metanoia in the seventh grade to do a few community service hours after making a couple bad decisions. In the midst of his doing those hours, we recognized his latent leadership skills and admitted him into our Leadership Program. We work with him to grow those skills through our Hodari Brothers Screen Printing business. He is our Master ScreenPrinter and mentors younger students in how to make products. With income made through Hodari Brother’s Screen Printing as well as a Junior Counselor Internship at Metanoia, Kerrionne has started a savings account for his post high school education. By growing the entrepreneurial desire and skills of students like Kerrione we grow the economic viability of our community.

JANE & LARRY IWAN: The Iwans moved to Kiawah Island in 2005 and have supported Metanoia since attending a dinner hosted by Metanoia Advocate, Charlie Larsen in 2006. This year the Iwans became donors to Metanoia’s Capital Campaign to construct a Youth Entrepreneurship and Volunteer Center in our neighborhood. “Metanoia’s approach resonates with Jane and me,” says Larry. “It strikes us as being both innovative and insightful. One Way it All Comes Together – Chicora Place Community Garden The Chicora Place Community Garden is sponsored by Metanoia and has become a true demonstration plot for so much of what Metanoia holds dear. The garden was originally built by volunteers in 2011 who were serving under the capable leadership of Germaine Jenkins. Germaine is a Metanoia homeowner, the chair of our Board of Directors and a Master Gardener through Clemson University. More than just a community beautification effort, the garden has come to represent some key ideas that we hold dear. Through partnerships with the City of North Charleston (who owns the land) and great business and volunteer partners we have seen the garden grow in remarkable ways. By recognizing neighborhood leaders as assets we have seen not only Germaine, but others grow their own understanding and ability to make healthy choices and tend the garden. Since initially planted the garden has grown from around forty five plants to several hundred. Now, every second Saturday of the month is a community gardening day where community members are taking the lead in planting and tending the garden and even acting as hosts to the occasional volunteer group from outside our neighborhood. As a result of all this hard work our community has new access to vegetables fresh from the garden. The Chicora Place Community Garden is becoming a great example of what can grow if we have the correct priorities.

Here are just a few of the important milestones we expect to see as we move into the next ten years of service together. WINTER 2013 – IMPROVED OUTCOMES MANAGEMENT As this Annual Report goes to print, we are customizing a web based software system to better track all of Metanoia’s effort to create opportunities alongside the communities we serve. Our current measurement efforts – whether grades for students or pre and post knowledge tests for adults in our financial literacy classes, are being uploaded to a software that will make data more readily available. With stronger, real time, data we will be better positioned to constantly improve our programs and show our supporters that we are achieving our goals. SPRING 2013 – CHICORA MURAL PROJECT We are partnering with the North Charleston Arts Department and their 2011 Artist in Residence, Lori Starnes, to design and paint a mural in our community. Metanoia’s students themselves will help design and paint the project and we hope that it might be an initial step and a journey that might see more murals throughout our community. These public displays of art have been shown to not only beautify a street, but also reduce crime, raise aspirations of neighborhood residents and spark further reinvestment in distressed communities. FALL 2013 – YOUTH ENTPRENEURSHIP AND VOLUNTEER CENTER OPENS: In 2009 Metanoia was given an abandoned building on Reynolds Avenue in our Community. After a long effort at fundraising and leveraging additional in-kind support we are now in the construction phase of our new building which will serve to house our youth businesses downstairs and a volunteer dormitory upstairs. We are hopeful that this new facility in the heart of our neighborhood’s commercial district will also spark further redevelopment.
