West Coast Discovery Program: Course Description Travel through the spectacular coastal terrain of Vancouver Island's west coast on this sea kayaking and coastal hiking course. During the sea kayak portion of this incredible expedition, you will paddle through the coves, natural harbours, and small islands in and around Clayoquot Sound. You’ll travel in double or single sea kayaks learning and practicing many ocean travel skills: paddling and bracing techniques, ocean navigation using nautical charts and tide tables, and safety and rescue skills. Clayoquot Sound, declared by UNESCO a biosphere reserve, is a maze of old-growth cedar covered islands and protected inlets, rocky reefs, sandy beaches, deep fjords and natural hot springs. Clayoquot Sound is one of the most beautiful places in the world; share this exquisite marine environment with resident pods of grey whales, seals, sea otters and sea lions, as well as bald eagles and rich inter-tidal marine life. During the land portion of the course, you’ll trek along beautiful coastal trails, into old growth forest and up into the rugged higher regions to gain spectacular views of the Sound. The West Coast Discovery program includes a 48 hour solo experience, community service project, and Outward Bound leadership training and interpersonal development. You will learn skills in wilderness travel and navigation, backcountry cooking over fires and stoves, leave no - trace camping, campcraft and wilderness etiquette and safety. Course activities include a multi-day sea kayaking expedition, coastal hiking and backpacking, and surfing.
THE OUTWARD BOUND CANADA EXPERIENCE The goal of every Outward Bound expedition is to teach you and your group the skills necessary to lead yourselves. Often, you will find that the wilderness environment is your best teacher; it will present you and your peers with unique challenges to face and real problems to solve. Your Instructors, seasoned wilderness educators who know when to step in and when to step back, will help you develop the skills necessary to face these obstacles with style and good judgment. Your job is to come to Outward Bound Canada open to adventure, fun and learning about yourself and others.
