THE ART OF CONSERVATION : A VISIT WI TH DING DARLING

LEWIS AND CL ARK IN IOWA

MULBERRY CENTER CHURCH – WILSON BREWER PARK Saturday, May 20th, 2017 at 1:00pm

MULBERRY CENTER CHURCH – WILSON BREWER PARK Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 1:00pm

Tom Milligan, Humanities Iowa’s Professional Actor from Amana Colonies reflects his passion for both theater and history through his unique one man play presentations. In this 45-minute presentation, Tom Milligan will portray Jay N. “Ding” Darling. Beginning with Darling’s early years in Sioux City as a young boy, to developing skills as an editorial cartoonist, Tom TOM MILLI GAN Milligan recalls “Ding” Darling’s remarkable life journey. Tom Milligan will continue to unfold the story of Mr. Darling’s to include 2 Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoons for the Des Moines Register and a remarkable career as a nationally known conservationist. From the introduction of The Duck Stamp to the creation of the National Wildlife Federation, Darling’s influence was felt not only through his cartoons, but his actions. Jay N. “Ding” Darling is considered by many to be one of the most important members of the modern conservation movement in the first half of the 20th Century. The impact of his work is still felt today. Free Event!

Humanities Iowa Presenter, Donald G. Shurr begins before the expedition with the story about the sale of the Louisiana Purchase to the United States. Tracing the 1803 course from Elizabeth, Pennsylvania to St. Charles, Missouri, Shurr discusses the background of the many “players” of the expedition including York, the engages, and Seaman. Moving up the Missouri River focus shifts to events occurring in Iowa, such as, the death of Sgt. Floyd. An accompanying Power Point presentation shows the keelboat and the pirogues with DONALD D. SCHURR actual photos taken in St. Charles and at the Onawa Lewis and Clark State Park. Donald G. Shurr will be in full costume during the program and will bring books, artifacts and pelts for viewing. The audience will be exposed to the many “firsts” that occurred in Iowa, the true peril of this journey, and the return of Lewis & Clark to civilization at journey’s end. Free Event!

HARRY TRUMAN’S WHISTLE-STOP AT DEXTER, IOWA – 1948 MULBERRY CENTER CHURCH – WILSON BREWER PARK Saturday, August 19th, 2017 at 1:00pm

POI NT/COUN TER POIN T: WAS THE CIVIL WAR NECESSAR Y? MULBERRY CENTER CHURCH – WILSON BREWER PARK Saturday, June 24th, 2017 at 1:00pm

Humanities Iowa Presenters, Dr. Tom Morain and Dr. William Juhnke in debate format take opposing positions to explore several of the contentious issues leading up to the first shots of the Civil War fired on Fort Sumter in 1861. This conflict tore the nation apart! They ask hard questions: Was it really an DR. TOM MOR AIN “irrepressible conflict” or could bolder political proposals have averted the bloodshed that cost 600,000 Americans their lives? What options did Lincoln have as President-elect when South Carolina voted to secede from the Union? Why did each side underestimate their opponents’ determination to fight? Why didn’t the North let the South go its way and avoid the incredible bloodshed? Morain and Juhnke invite the public into the debate as they explore the tense political climate of 1860-61 and demonstrate how historians can disagree without being disagreeable. Free Event!

Webster City Area Chamber

Rod Stanley, Historian and Presenter will provide us with an electrifying presentation as to how a candidate everyone thought was certain to lose the election, Harry S. Truman, decided to take his candidacy to the people via train. Truman was met by ten acres of humanity, estimated at 100,000 people in a field near Dexter, Iowa on September 18, 1948. The occasion was the National Plowing Match. The whistle-stop speech was broadcast nationally. It is credited with turning around Harry Truman’s presidential campaign and causing the greatest election upset in American history. And it happened in Iowa. Free Event!

KENDALL YOUNG

LibrAry

Community Theatre SHERLOCK HOLMES & THE WOLF FAMILY CAPER

ow did Webster City end up with one of the most beautiful libraries in Iowa? We owe our thanks to Kendall Young, local businessman and banker, who, after his death in 1896, surprised the city by leaving the majority of his estate to establish a free public library. The Young’s own home (now the “Jane Young House”) was used for the library from 1898 until the new building was opened in 1905. The Youngs’ generous gift allowed for elaborate and artistic details in the building,

H

from the Terrazo and mosaic floors, to the African marble columns and the stained glass windows and dome. The Webster City Tribune reported on the opening of the building by stating that “the splendor overwhelms.” Since then, the Kendall Young Library has been a landmark of the town, supporting the educational, recreational, and informational needs of the community throughout the years. But even by the 1940s, the Board of Trustees was talking about the need for more space. Finally, in 1984, the Board initiated “Kendall Young Library – Phase II – The People’s Project”, a fund-raising effort to make an expansion possible. Numerous

contributions from the current and former community members led to the construction of a $4.4 million addition that was dedicated in 1998. The addition more than doubled the size of the library while maintaining the beautiful neo-classical style. This wonderful building is a testament to the past and to the generosity of our community. It is also a place to relax, gather, discover, dream and plan for the future. You are always welcome to stop in to pick up a good book, check out a DVD, bring the child in your life to storytime, learn about our online resources, or just admire the beauty of the building.

WCCT has entertained audiences since 1968. Our 2017-2018 season will launch our next 50 years of quality theatre. Visit our website and like us on Facebook for updates on productions and Readers Theatre selections.

Casting our Story... The story of Seneca Foundry reaches back more than 100-years. Early products manufactured include several styles of feeding troughs for hogs, cattle, and poultry; drinking pans for stock fountains; and even an early version of hospital bed frames. Today we bring iron to life for many people and a vast variety of industries. Some products you may recognize today are cast iron components on weight lifting benches in top collegiate weight rooms across the U.S., brackets for basketball hoops, and cast iron components used to manufacture fifth wheel hitches and slideouts on RV’s.

Although much has changed over 100-years, we hold true to our core values of putting the customer first with dedicated, committed service; doing the right thing; team building; continuous improvement; and treating everyone with fairness and respect.

We are a proud member and supporter of our community, and always looking for new team members! As a recipient of the Des Moines Register’s Top Work Places, we offer competitive wages and a generous benefit package. Call 515-832-1722 or check out our website to learn more.

City I'm John Hawkins, the mayor of Webster City, Webster City has countless things happening! Canoe the Boone River, bike and hike the trails, visit the historic library, shop the specialty stores, drive the Dragoon Trail, or just relax in one of our many parks –those are just a few choices. You can find the listings of restaurants, shopping choices, parks, and unique places all throughout this guide. Please feel free to stop by the Chamber office at 628 2nd Street and visit during the week and they will gladly help you out as well! It always amazes me how much there is to do in our community. Fuller Hall is busy year round and it’s a great place for families and adults too. The parks and trails provide great outdoor entertainment for us all. Have you seen all the classes at Legacy Learning BRV? You can grow your own garden at All Cultures Equal, watch cars race at the Fairgrounds, golf at one of two golf courses, travel around the county and partake in numerous celebrations and just enjoy yourself right here where you live. We live in a great community and we urge you to become more involved. Come to the City Council meetings and see what how your local government is operating. Or shoot me an email at johnhawkins@webstercity.com We’d like to hear from you! Sincerely, John Hawkins, Mayor
