8-bit history We Remember... The Goonies II

By: Konami Release date: November, 1987

PICTURE QU?Z

The game's story centers on Mikey. His friends, the Goonies, have been kidnapped by the Fratellis, an Italian family of small-time crooks and counterfeiters. Mikey must rescue all six of his friends and free a captured mermaid named Annie who did not appear in the film.

Do you know

The Goonies II features two modes of play: platform and first-person. Most of the game is played as the former as the player works through a non-linear map. The player moves Mikey to new areas of the map by ladders or doors that may act as warp zones. Several different types of zones are found in the game, each with distinct enemies, graphics and music.

HipKnosis Gets in Your Mind HipKnosis is a rock and roll band from central Iowa that crosses several musical boundaries at will.

In 2008, their first CD, “Catch a Rainbow,” (actually released under the name H&K) contained buoyant pop and rock music that mixed the wispy singer/songwriter tendencies of lead vocalist Heather Kelly with the harder edge of producer Kirk Kaufman. The second release, “HipKnosis,” expanded into power-pop territory in 2010. Now, in 2012, Hipknosis has moved a quantum leap forward with “Darkest Dreams.” The entire CD is strong throughout. The first thing a longtime listener will notice is the incredibly polished sound. Ms. Kelly has grown from a pop songstress into a confident rocker. The songs are stronger and deeper. The arrangements are tighter and more focused. From “Crave,” a catchy poprock opener, to the finale, Kelly’s autobiographical statement, “It’s Over,” HipKnosis shows the maturity of a band at the peak of its powers. A lot of this has to do with the band’s decision to stop playing live in August 2011 to spend the next several months solely working diligently in the studio. Ms. Kelly says, “we knew we needed to use a variety of musicians on this record in order to expand the scope of HipKnosis. We asked a lot of people with great talents to write and perform on “Darkest Dreams.” Guitarists Erick Hovey, Melvin James, Sean Minikis, and Jeremy Ober all contributed to the album. Dean Davis and Chris Anderson played drums.

six tunes on “Darkest Dreams.” Hearn programmed guitars, drums, bass, synths, pianos and organs on the album.

Hearn says, “when I brought the song “Crave” to Kirk, he said he would like to use the track I had already recorded in Silhouette Studios, my home base. That worked well, so Heather and Kirk asked me to do the same with some of Heather’s songs. It just fell together that my production style and what Hipknosis wanted were the same.” Kaufman says, “Dave and I worked together in the Hawks, and we were able to pick up where we left off 30 years ago. We both believe this project is the strongest we have worked on since those days.” HipKnosis has spent the time since finishing “Darkest Dreams” working on an entirely new live show. Kaufman returns on bass, but Hearn takes over the primary keyboard role, allowing Kelly to focus much more on her role as the front person live. Josh Tilton has come aboard on drums, but the permanent guitar chair is yet to be filled. Melvin James played a HipKnosis show at the Gas Lamp in Des Moines in early May. The band has recruited ace guitarist Brandon Scott Sellner to play a HipKnosis show at the Iowa State Fair in August.

Longtime Iowa songwriter and keyboard player Dave Hearn joined the band in late 2011. He contributed three songs and produced the basic tracks for

“Darkest Dreams” will be released in the early summer of 2012. Previews of tracks from the CD are currently streaming at www.numberonemusic.com. Tracks from earlier CDs are available for download at iTunes.
