CITY CLERK The City Clerk’s office is responsible for public records of Council action including agendas, minutes, resolutions and ordinances; city finances including accounts payable, payroll, investments and budgets; assisting with various contractor registrations, cigarette permits, beer permits and liquor licenses.
Utility Billing Utility Billing is a function of the City Clerk’s office and can assist citizens with utility payments, requests to start or stop service, downtown parking, contractor registrations and pet licenses.
DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Code Enforcement Code enforcement ensures that all building, mechanical and plumbing improvements within the City of Fort Dodge are completed in accordance with adopted codes providing for the health, safety and welfare of Fort Dodge residents and visitors. Permits are required for the following: • Building (new homes, new commercial structures, general remodel, siding, windows roofing) • Signs • Electrical • Plumbing • Mechanical
Community Development Community Development works to improve and maintain the City’s housing stock, to revitalize declining neighborhoods, and to provide assistance to the business community.
Economic Development The Economic Development office fosters municipal/business partnerships, offers business assistance, facilitates the business retention program and manages a business database. Engineering Engineering is responsible for review of planning, design and construction of streets, bridges, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, sidewalks, parking lots and more. This department oversees the preparation of plans and specifications prepared by independent consultants and advises Council on appropriate courses of action related to these plans.
Inspections Inspections is responsible for enforcing the 1976 state of Iowa program requiring all cities with a population of over 15,000 to have a rental housing inspection program. All owners of rental property within the City must register their properties with the City. Along with an initial inspection, there is a periodic inspection of the property, which is currently on a three-year rotational basis.
Nuisance Nuisance works primarily on a complaint basis, enforcing regulations on junk in yards, including garbage, debris, construction materials, tires, mattresses, household furniture, appliances, televisions and brush piles; tall grass and weeds that have grown to over 10” in length; vehicles, including junk, unlicensed or parked in the front yard on the owner’s property; and property maintenance code violations. Complaints should be logged through Connect Fort Dodge.
Planning & Zoning Planning & Zoning manages the City’s built environment by working with citizens and other City departments to provide information and assistance with development procedures, mapping and land use and zoning code inquiries.
HUMAN RESOURCES The Human Resources office provides ongoing support to other City departments in recruiting, labor relations, training and benefits.
HUMAN RIGHTS The Human Rights office works on behalf of the Fort Dodge Human Rights Commission to eliminate discrimination through enforcement of laws, education and community outreach. The goal of the office is to protect all people who live and work in Fort Dodge from discrimination and sexual harassment in employment, public accommodations, education, housing and credit.
MANAGER’S OFFICE Appointed and managed by the City Council, the City Manager works for the City in a Chief Administrative Officer role.

POLICE DEPARTMENT The 40 sworn officers of the Fort Dodge Police Department are assigned between three divisions:
Administration Administration is comprised of command staff, including the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, Captain of Patrol, Captain of Investigations, Department Secretary and the Police Records and Support Technician.
Uniformed Patrol Patrol is comprised of the division commander (Captain) and four patrol teams. This group is responsible for patrolling the corporate limits of Fort Dodge and City property outside City limits. Duties include calls for service, proactive patrol, criminal case follow up and crime prevention.
Criminal Investigations Criminal Investigations is responsible for follow up on major cases like murders, sexual assaults, narcotics, internet crimes against children and arson. They also lead investigators on complex investigations that are beyond the scope, time constraints, and experience of our dedicated Patrol Division staff. Additionally, two School/Community Resource Officers work within this division.

Fort Dodge Fire Rescue provides fire protection, emergency medical services, emergency rescue and hazardous material response to Fort Dodge residents.

PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY Parks & Recreation Fort Dodge Parks & Recreation is dedicated to providing high quality programing, facilities and service to the community. Youth programs offer something for all ages from toddlers to teens. People of all ages enjoy organized sporting events, an extensive trail system, a state of the art aquatics center, cabin rentals, neighborhood parks and playgrounds, a municipal golf course, and a community center located on Main Street Fort Dodge that caters to older active adults. Harlan Rogers Sports Complex is host to numerous baseball and softball tournaments, including the Iowa High School Girl’s State Softball Tournament each summer. All of these events and facilities contribute to an exciting quality of life and bring countless visitors to the community every year. Forestry The City of Fort Dodge offers a full-service forestry department to citizens. Services include trimming and pruning of City/public right-of-way trees; removal of dead, dying, hazardous or diseased trees from the parking or other City property; stump grinding removal, and back filling from public right-of-ways and City property; miscellaneous care of cracked and injured trees; and providing general information in regards to insect and disease problems infecting trees.

PUBLIC WORKS The purpose of Public Works is to coordinate the activities of various divisions that maintain and improve the City’s infrastructure, including water mains, hydrants, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, streets, alleys, street signs, traffic signs and traffic signals.
Electrical The Electrical division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of street lights, maintenance of the traffic signal system and electrical wiring in City buildings.
Equipment Maintenance The Equipment Maintenance division is responsible for preventative maintenance on City-owned vehicles and equipment.
Sanitation The Sanitation division is responsible for the collection and disposal of garbage, recycling, yard waste, brush and leaves. A compost site is available at Central Garage to all residents with City sanitation services. The site is open traditionally from April to November, depending on weather.
Streets The Streets division is responsible for all street maintenance including street sweeping, street patching, snow and ice removal, dust control and pothole repair.
Traffic Safety The Traffic safety division is responsible for maintaining over 12,000 street and traffic signs. They are responsible for painting all lane lines, lane indication markings, school crossings and railroad crossings on over 160 miles of city streets.
Water and Sewer (Warehouse) The Warehouse division is responsible for all underground infrastructure, maintenance and replacement of fire hydrants and valves, water main flushing and repairs and maintenance of storm and sanitary sewers.
