uman beings are not the only creatures looking for warm and cozy spots to ride out autumn and winter. Very often wild animals see homes as the perfect spots to nest and survive the cold. Fall is a great time to inspect your home top to bottom and make sure there are no points of entry for unwanted guests. The Humane Society notes that deteriorated trim and fascia boards can make great entry points for animals like squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and possums. Other animals may bed down under porches or decks or even inside chimneys. Seal any holes or repair points that are penetrable by cold animals. Just be sure to inspect the home prior to sealing or capping any potential entr y points to be certain there aren’t any animals already living inside. Other wise you can trap unwanted animals in your home. Test possible entry points by sealing them loosely with a paper towel or insulation and see if the material gets pushed out.

One of the disadvantages to working from home is that remote workers don’t have access to the same level of equipment as in the main office, such as color copiers or scanners. If you want to include even scaled-down versions of such equipment in your office, you will need ample space. Lighting is another factor remote workers must consider when they’re planning their home offices. Natural light can provide an energetic boost and improve your mood, so choose a room in your home that gets lots of sunlight during the day. Many professionals who work remotely do so from the basements of their homes, which can make it difficult to rely on natural light. If the basement is the only location in your home that can fit a home office, look for lighting sources that replicate daylight so you are not working in dark quarters. Connectivity

Connectivity also must be considered when planning a home of fice. While wireless Inter net has made Internet dead zones less problematic, certain areas or rooms in your home may still be touch-and-go with regard to Internet connectivity. Such areas should be avoided when choosing a room for your home office, as it can be difficult to remain productive if your connection to your of fice’s external server is routinely compromised. Find an area where the wireless connection is always strong.

Distractions

While your home might be empty for much of the day, you don’t want to be distracted when the kids come home from school or when your spouse or roommate arrives home from work. Avoid putting your home of fice too close to popular hang-

Homeowners know that gutter cleaning is an important part of fall home maintenance, but they may not completely understand why. Gutters filled with leaves and other debris can quickly become heavy. This stresses the entire gutter system and can cause the gutters to fall off of the home entirely. • Nesting areas: Clogged gutters can serve as nesting areas for insects and birds. Mosquitoes and other insects lay eggs in pooling water. Gutters can quickly become breeding spots for harmful pests. Furthermore,

birds may nest in gutters, creating unsightly messes and more damage. Seeds that sprout in clogged gutters can grow unchecked. • Ice-damming: Left untreated, pooled water and leaves in gutters can freeze over. Blocked water can back up and push against the roof, lifting shingles and destroying the roof in the process. • Foundation trouble: Clogged gutters also may contribute to flooded basements and cracked foundations. Leaking water will pool around the foundation, expanding when frozen and causing cracks in basement and crawlspace walls. It also can cause driveways and other cement areas around the home to sag and crack. Gutter cleaning should be scheduled in the spring and fall of each year. Homeowners can hire gutter-cleaning ser vices to handle the job or do the job themselves. Rinse the gutters with water from the hose after ward to ensure good run-off. Take the time to seal any leaks as well. This routine maintenance can save homeowners many headaches and prevent some very expensive repairs.

ow is the time to take a few precautionary steps toward the utmost security of your home and family in the event of extreme weather occurrences, say officials observing climate change. You may be doing so already, but recent survey findings show that most Americans are worried about the ability to cope with damage caused by severe wind, fire, and flooding. Safety is the main preoccupation, but so are the costs associated with destruction and loss. “One answer that solves many issues is to opt for the strongest impact-resilient house available,” says Keven Rector at Nudura, a leading name in building with insulated concrete forms. “This ICF method is an advanced departure from traditional wood framing — and our design is recognized to be even more efficient. At the construction site, these compact concrete forms interlock (like Lego) to build a rock solid envelope from 4 to 12 inches thick.”

And, says Rector, this construction innovation gives homeowners far more for their investment, such as: Walls to weather any storm — If high winds and fire are a concern, data shows that an ICF home delivers hurricane and tornado impact-resistance up 250 miles per hour — and the fire protection rating is up to four hours. Energy bills with a smile — Concrete

walls vastly reduce air infiltration as compared to wood walls, and that is the key to lower energy consumption. This saving is even more pronounced, says Rector, if builders use the most advanced ICFs available. The Nudura design, for instance, combines two panels of thick (EPS) foam with the structural strength and thermal mass of concrete. The resulting envelope produces an energy

efficiency rating as high as R-50 (compared to an average R-20 in wood structures) saving you up to 50 percent on your utility bills. Temperature consistency — The outside cold air easily travels through woodframed walls, causing thermal bridging that produces drafts and chilly spots inside your home. Walls with a solid concrete core prevent thermal bridging so even temperatures result throughout the house. Better, breathable air — Mold, mildew, and toxins associated with wood structures are also diminished. Shut out the noise — Solid concrete is an effective sound barrier. It dampens sound vibrations from outside noise such as traffic, trains and neighborhood parties. This internal peace and quiet is a welcomed bonus. Rock solid asset — It is generally expected that a stronger, safer, storm resistant, greener home — and one that is cost efficient with less maintenance and repair — will steadily increase in resale value.

Insulate well — One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim

for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. 4. Backyard Care — Save your property from potential damage by trimming overgrown trees and shrubs to prevent ice-laden branches from thrashing against electrical wires and your home’s exterior. Drain/shut off any exterior faucets and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing. Ensure rain or snow drains away from the house to avoid foundation problems. 5. Roof and Gutters — Inspect your roof for shingles that are warped, damaged or even missing to prevent a future leak. Use roofing cement and a caulking gun to seal joints where water could penetrate, such as around the chimney, skylights or vent pipes. Make sure that your gutters and downspouts are securely fastened. Downspouts should extend at least five feet away from the home to prevent flooding. When it comes to preventative maintenance, a little time and effort can save thousands in energy costs and repair bills over the lifetime of your home.
