Who We Are Creative Minds is a youth-led art publication that amplifies the voices of the Braddock Youth Project (BYP) and the Wilkinsburg Youth Project (WYP). The theme of this second issue, Messages from the Next Generation, offers words of advice, caution, and encouragement. This issue is also a call to action, asking people to use whatever platform they have to support oppressed lives and speak out against racism. This zine project was born out of a partnership between WYP and BYP and Haylee Ebersole of Meshwork Press. Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, we sought creative ways to transition our program to an online platform. We were able to distribute ‘printmaking at home’ kits to every youth who took on the challenge of setting up creative spaces in their bedrooms, kitchens, basements, and backyards. A big thank you to guardians and families for supporting this project in your homes! WYP and BYP are work skills excellence programs that allow youth, aged 14-19, to design projects based on the needs they perceive in their community. The programs’ goals are to foster skills that will aid youth in advancing toward positive life outcomes, by providing youth with the means to create meaningful and sustainable community development projects. These projects seek to harness the energy and creativity of young people to promote positive, culturally relevant change in their communities. Meshwork Press is a printshop and design studio in Wilkinsburg, PA committed to supporting the powerful and vital voice of young people through art.
