Mayor’s Message Dear Friends, It is with gratitude that I announce the retirement of one of Merritt’s longest-serving and most-dedicated servants. In 1971 Brian Barrett began his career in recreation at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena, becoming recreation director for the Town of Merritt five years later.

awarded the contract. In 1990 Brian became the sole proprietor of Merritt Arena Sports and he has operated the arena in partnership with the City of Merritt ever since.

The operation of the NVMA was privatized during the 1986/87 skating season and Brian and a business partner were

Throughout his career, he has reached and touched thousands, both young and old alike and operated what many arena goers consider the cleanest arena facility they have ever visited.

Brian will officially retire from his role at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena on December 31, 2017, ending a career that has spanned decades.

There is much to celebrate as Brian hands the reins of the NVMA operation to City of Merritt staff: • Coach of the Year 1992-1993 • Dunc Jamieson Award BCHHF 2007 • Induction to BCHHF 2016 Brian, on behalf of council members, city staff and a grateful community, I thank you for your dedication, your commitment and for a job very well done. I wish you and your family the best that the future has to offer. Sincerely, Mayor Neil Menard
