A Merrigong Theatre Company production in association with The Disability Trust

the man who dreamt the stars Devised by the CAST and creative team

Discover a universe where your imagination defines what is possible Featuring an ensemble of performers, some of whom are perceived to have intellectual disabilities, The Man Who Dreamt the Stars is a new Merrigong work with a unique artistic vision resulting from our long-term partnership with The Disability Trust. The Quiet Man is obsessed with all things astronomical; his solitary days spent dreaming of space travel. On the night of a solar storm, his peaceful seclusion is disrupted by a crack in the space-time continuum, and into his world come three lonely figures. Will the cosmic forces unleashed in this brave new world of connection transform his dreams into reality?

The Man Who Dreamt the Stars combines stunning interactive video projection, visual storytelling, and a unique soundscape to create an absurd, playful and powerfully emotional world. Merrigong’s most ambitious production to date, this is exciting new theatre that reminds us that in the face of life’s challenges and restrictions, there is great beauty in the courage it takes to dream.

A Sydney Theatre Company and the Australian Defence FORCE co-production

the long way home By Daniel Keene

An unmissable and inspiring theatre event Sydney Theatre Company has embarked upon an historic endeavour with the Australian Defence Force to present this major new work. Taking the words and experiences of servicemen and women, they’ll create a unique, inspiring and unforgettable event. The Long Way Home reflects the Australian Defence Force’s recent experiences on operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor, as well as in humanitarian and disaster relief, and protecting Australia’s borders. British director Stephen Rayne and multi-award-winning Australian writer Daniel Keene have shaped a powerful piece of theatre, featuring military personnel recovering from physical and psychological injuries. These servicemen and women will perform alongside professional actors as part of a broader rehabilitation program that will assist their recovery. The Long Way Home will open a window on their lives while deployed on operations and illuminate the challenges of their return to everyday life.

wulamanayuwi and the seven pamanui By Jason de Santis

A feast of colour, myth and magic from the Tiwi Islands This surprise hit of the 2011 Darwin Festival is being acclaimed by audiences of all ages as it makes its way around the country on a national tour. Mixing the enchanting tradition of European fairytale with characters and Creation stories, Wulamanayuwi and the Seven Pamanui brings a very Tiwi twist to a much-loved Brothers Grimm tale; a modern and layered Aboriginal fairytale that will satisfy audiences young and old! Jarparra, the Moon Man, introduces us to Wulamanayuwi (pronounced Wool-a–man–ay–you), the daughter of a Tiwi Warrior, who has run away from her evil stepmother Jirrakilala. Guided by a white cockatoo, Wulamanayuwi encounters seven mischievous spirits – the Pamanui – who lead her on a journey full of magic and adventure. Through song, puppetry and the language and rhyme of the Tiwi Islands, Wulamanayuwi and the Seven Pamanui offers a unique spin on a classic tale of good, evil and redemption, from a proud new voice in contemporary Indigenous theatre.

“It’s like SBS in there. Aunt Azza comes out of customs, and mum transforms. Ultra Arab. Instantaneous. One minute she’s cooking Frank steak and chips, next thing she’s asking me where to buy goat. Frank won’t eat goat.” – Jump for Jordan 10

A Griffin Theatre Company production

jump for jordan by Donna Abela

Vital new theatre from the home of Australian writing Looking deep into the heart of Sydney and its surrounds, Jump for Jordan unpacks the experience common to countless second-generation Australians, of being caught between two cultures. Aspiring archaeologist Lola left home when she was only 20, much to the shame of her traditional Jordanian mother. Six years later, losing sleep, and petrified of the judgement of her visiting ‘mad Arab’ Aunty Azza, Lola is forced to lie about her life, her career and the existence of her Aussie partner. Worst of all is the fear that she’s also lying to herself.

Transfering directly from a season at Griffin Theatre Company, Sydney’s acclaimed new-writing theatre, Donna Abela’s Jump for Jordan took out the coveted Griffin Award in 2013, wowing the judges with its vitality and ambition. Sifting through shifting layers of past and present, farce and fantasy, Jump for Jordan is one woman’s mad, messy excavation of her own history, and her attempt to piece together the broken bits of her identity.

DUE TO UNFORESEEN COPYRIGHT ISSUES, BELVOIR & MALTHOUSE THEATRE WILL BE PRODUCING THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR IN 2014 INSTEAD OF THE PHILADELPHIA STORY.

A Belvoir and Malthouse Theatre co-production

the government inspector BY Simon Stone AFTER NIKOLAI GOGOL

In implausible times, only an implausible masterpiece will do Writer/director Simon Stone has carved a reputation for creating great new Australian theatre inspired by, or adapted from, earlier works (The Wild Duck, after Ibsen, and The Cherry Orchard, after Chekhov, are recent examples). While the Australian theatre world argues the merits or otherwise of his artful rewrites, Wollongong audiences finally get the chance to see what all the fuss is about, as Stone turns his craft to one of theatre’s great satirical works. In a small town somewhere - could be anywhere, really - a self-important mayor and his corrupt cronies are thrown into panic by news from the capital that someone seriously serious is coming to report on the state of this and that. Desperate to ingratiate himself, the mayor mistakes Khlestakov, a visiting nobody, for the important official. Suddenly a completely ordinary, perhaps even sub-ordinary guy finds himself enjoying the full benefits of public power.

GARETH DAVIES

In The Government Inspector, Simon Stone and co. transform this nineteenth century masterwork from the great Russian dramatist Nikolai Gogol into a modern Australian tale of the ridiculous depths to which bureaucracy still sinks when it collides with self-interest and greed. Gareth Davies pulls on Khlestakov’s smarmy pants, testing the proposition that he is in fact the funniest stage actor in the country, and if not the funniest then at least the silliest. He leads a brilliant ensemble cast through this great obstacle course of lunatic hilarity.

the factory By Vela Manusaute

A big-hearted musical with a whole lot of soul After becoming the hottest ticket ever at the Auckland Arts Festival, New Zealand’s most acclaimed new musical is heading across the ditch. Like a Pacific Island version of Bran Nue Dae (with a fair dose of Hairspray thrown in for good measure!) this large-scale, hugely entertaining and pitch-perfect musical is a must see! Arriving in New Zealand with her father, a young Samoan woman with big dreams and hopes for a brighter future is immediately set to work in a South Auckland textile factory; but each time the factory bell rings, she feels further away from both her home and her aspirations. Hilarious and heartfelt, this vibrant, funk-fuelled musical weaves a romantic narrative and wry lyrics into a tribute to the courage of the Pacific peoples who migrated to Auckland during the 1970s. Featuring an original score, a live band, slick choreography, and a dazzling array of exuberant and soulful songs, The Factory is a clever and optimistic exploration of the migrant experience that will leave you beaming!

Set within the stifling conventions of Victorian England, two young bachelors have taken to bending the rules and the truth to add a dash of excitement to their lives. “The course of true love never did run smooth.” A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act I, Scene I 24

A BELL SHAKESPEARE PRODUCTION

the dream by William Shakespeare

The clue is in the title - this is a different dream Bell Shakespeare’s Co-Artistic Director, Peter Evans reawakens Shakespeare’s classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream with a breathless 90-minute production that amplifies the magic, mirth and mayhem. Love is in the air in Athens — and it’s contagious. Besides the royal wedding, which is just days away, there are young lovers dreaming of contented futures together. Hermia and Lysander are besotted with one another, while Helena adores Demetrius. The only snag is that Demetrius loves Hermia — and he’s got Hermia’s father on his side. Shakespeare wasn’t kidding when he said the course of true love never ran smooth. Determined to be together, Hermia and Lysander meet in a moonlit forest, with plans to elope. Following hot on their heels is Demetrius, who in turn is pursued by a lovelorn Helena. But the young lovers are not alone in the forest. Nick Bottom and his hapless bunch of tradies have gathered to rehearse a play to be performed at the royal wedding. And, hidden from human eyes, a mischievous sprinkling of fairies….

Prepare to be enchanted by this new, fully-staged production, complete with fabulous 1930s costumes, a chamber orchestra and a vibrant cast of singers, as well as a special appearance from a local children’s chorus.

the wharf revue 2014 Time has not wearied them Everyone’s favourite lampoonists return for a special 15th anniversary edition of The Wharf Revue, packed full of their trademark irreverent, anarchic political satire. Jonathan Biggins, Amanda Bishop, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott bring us another all-new, up-to-the-minute dose of their keenly-observed comic sketches. Look out for some of your most – and least! – loved public figures as they are paraded in all their glory for your delectation. Featuring an array of heroes and villains, fools and wits, clowns and crazies that have been strutting our political stages, this brilliant blend of side-splitting sketches and musical mayhem never fails to amuse. It’s vicious, malicious, but most of all delicious.

Especially a 13-storey treehouse that has everything, including a bowling alley, a secret underground laboratory, self-making beds, a vegetable vaporiser and a marshmallow machine. Direct from its sell-out premiere season at the Sydney Opera House and adapted by the award-winning Richard Tulloch (The Book of Everything), The 13-Storey Treehouse is brought to life by a seriously funny cast and magical moments of theatricality.

the listies pete earworms the sheep You'll ROFLSHALBOWCO* with this hilarious new show

A quirky and deliciously Australian musical for kids

Wollongong has fallen in love with their shows about computers and movies, now The Listies return with their new show!

Shaun is the new shearer in Shaggy Gully. Since shearing is such hard work, all the other shearers have sheep dogs to help them, but not Shaun. His partner is Pete, a sheep-sheep!

Imagine The Young Ones hosting Play School – if The Young Ones had downloaded two gigabytes of fart noises. Now The Listies are back with the chaotic and ingenious Earworms – an interactive show recorded live during each show and then posted online so you can listen back later. Earworms is raucous, unruly and guaranteed to have the whole audience (even Dads) ROFLing.

From the award-winning company that brought you The Bugalugs Bum Thief, and directed by Jonathan Biggins (The Wharf Revue), this hilarious musical comedy is imaginatively told by four performers playing shearers, dogs and sheep. A tribute to honouring your own strengths whilst working with the flock!

* Roll on the floor laughing so hard a little bit of wee comes out.

Based on the picture book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley.

merrigong studio sessions After the success of its inaugural season in 2013, Studio Sessions returns, presenting the first public outing of three new works by local independent artists that have been developed on site through the MakeIt @Merrigong program. DETAILS TO BE ANNOUNCED EARLY 2014.

37

As well as supporting independent artists through our Make It @Merrigong program, we deliver a number of specific community-focussed programs, such as subsidised educational opportunities for young people, and our theatre program in partnership with The DisabilityTrust. We’re also one of only a handful of regional theatre companies that is committed to commissioning, developing and producing new theatre, telling important stories about our region. All of this artistic and community work costs a lot to keep going - more than we can cover through Government funding alone, which amounts to less than 20% of Merrigong’s total revenue. We need your support to sustain our artistic and community activities. As a not-for-profit organisation, the support of our donors plays an essential role in what we can achieve, both on and off the stage. Your support can make a huge difference.

$150

can subsidise the cost of live audio describing a play for our blind or vision-impaired patrons.

$500

can help subsidise 50 students from a socio-economically disadvantaged school to attend the theatre.

When you make a tax deductible donation of $150 or more you become part of Merrigong’s Inner Circle. For 12 months you will: - Have your donation acknowledged on displays in the IPAC foyer, and in Merrigong’s annual report - Receive a VIP invitation and reserved seating at Merrigong’s Season launch - Receive occasional invitations to exclusive events - Receive occasional updates on how donations are being used to support our programs. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. Donate using the booking form, via our website at www.merrigong.com.au/support or call Judi Douglas on (02) 4224 5902.

$1000

can help cover the costs of a program to help secondary students develop playwriting skills.

$1500

can help pay for a 2-day workshop connecting professionals with 20 participants with a disability.

access services Hearing assistance

Both IPAC theatres are equipped with sound enhancement facilities. The IMB Theatre has an FM system for hearing augmentation. The Gordon Theatre has an induction hearing loop compatible with T-switch hearing aids. Receivers can be obtained free of charge from the box office prior to performances.

Audio description

Selected performances in our 2014 Season will be audio described for the benefit of patrons with low or no vision. In an audio described performance, actions, expressions and gestures are described by professional describers trained by Vision Australia to bring out the true imagery in a performance. Patrons will hear the description through headsets. Patrons wanting to use the audio description service must specify this to box office staff when booking tickets. The following are Merrigong’s Season 2014 audio described performances:

The Man Who Dreamt the Stars Saturday 22 February, 2.30pm The Long Way Home Saturday 8 March, 2pm The 13-Storey Treehouse Wednesday 16 April, 12pm The Government Inspector Saturday 7 June, 2pm The Factory Saturday 12 July, 2pm Food Saturday 23 August, 2.30pm The Importance of Being Earnest Saturday 6 September, 2pm

Large-print cast sheet

Large-print, plain text copies of the cast sheets for Theatre Season shows are available upon request (with 5 days prior notice).

Tactile tours

Before the commencement of audio described performances, patrons will have the chance to come on stage and participate in a 30-minute tactile tour of the set and costumes. Being amongst the scenery establishes the scene for the participant and allows for a deeper theatrical experience for patrons who are vision impaired or blind. Patrons wanting to participate must specify this to box office staff when booking tickets.

Live captioning

Selected performances in our 2014 Season will be captioned for the benefit of patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing. Captions are displayed on plasma screens at the side of the stage. Please check the seat map when booking online or mention your interest in captioning when booking at the box office to ensure you are in the best position to make use of this service. The following are Merrigong’s Season 2014 captioned performances:

The Man Who Dreamt the Stars Saturday 22 February, 2.30pm The Long Way Home Saturday 8 March, 2pm The Government Inspector Saturday 7 June, 2pm The Importance of Being Earnest Saturday 6 September, 2pm The Dream Saturday 11 October, 2pm
