UPON A TIME...

Some might struggle to explain the literal meaning of those words, but all of us know exactly what they are saying. Almost every culture in the world has some equivalent phrase that indicates it is now time to gather around and listen, that we – the tribe, the village, or the family – are about to be transported. A storyteller is about to weave their magic, to dispense some wisdom, issue some warning, teach some lesson, or just simply entertain us, thrill us, or make us laugh. Here in the theatre, the ancient art of storytelling is alive and well. We gather in a darkened space for the same promise to be fulfilled. In an increasingly complicated and fragmented society, storytelling has never been more important. We still revisit ancient stories, the classic myths and fables of our culture, but we also come to hear from a new breed of storytellers – those who document the happenings of our times, who question, provoke and challenge us to see new shape and meaning in our present-day world. In our 2015 Season there are some new versions of old stories that have helped define our nation – like the legend of an infamous bushranger, reimagined in Kelly, or the tale of a boy growing up and discovering the beauty of the natural world in the iconic Storm Boy. Or the story that unfolds in Country Song of one of our most famous troubadours, Jimmy Little, a pioneer of country music and of reconciliation, a teacher and inspiration. There are also some defining stories and storytellers from other cultures – one of China’s best-loved stories, a 16th Century classic, has new life breathed into it for a new generation in Monkey… Journey to the West, and we have a close encounter with perhaps the greatest of all Welsh storytellers in Dylan Thomas: Return Journey. There are intensely moving and personal real-life stories, like Mark Thomas’ tale of his father’s love of opera, Bravo Figaro!, or the touching Head Full of Love that tells of a friendship born in an unlikely setting – the Alice Springs Beanie Festival! And the stories are certainly diverse in this season – from one told through stunning music and dance in the smash-hit musical Sweet Charity, to an extremely topical, brilliantly contemporary work (with a very long title!), that challenges us to think about who has the right to even tell a particular story – A Sri Lankan Tamil Asylum Seeker’s Story as Performed by Australian Actors Under the Guidance of a Sinhalese Director. So enjoy the story of our 2015 season that unfolds in this brochure, and come and join us for some … stories from now and then.

Hey big spender...

WEET CHARITY By Neil Simon Music by Cy Coleman; Lyrics by Dorothy Fields Winner of three 2014 Helpmann Awards, and boasting an extraordinary line-up of musical theatre talent, the smash-hit production of Sweet Charity that took Sydney by storm is coming to Wollongong direct from its return season at the Sydney Opera House. If you believe in something hard enough, then eventually it has to come true, right? Charity Hope Valentine is the eternal optimist - a worldview that puts her distinctly at odds with her co-workers in a seedy, run-down dance hall. Dancing with man after man to pay her rent, she dreams of finally being whisked away and rescued by love. Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields’ memorable score (with major hits including ‘Big Spender’ and ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’) and Neil Simon’s razor-sharp script lift the veil on the exquisite agony of living on the under-side of life. Emerging star Samantha Leigh Dodemaide, winner of the Rob Guest Endowment, makes the role of Charity her own for the Wollongong season. The perfect night of musical theatre for adults.

A triumph of storytelling

ravo Figaro! By Mark Thomas Acclaimed British writer, activist and comedian Mark Thomas brings us his brilliant, poignant and personal tale about family, love, death and art. First commissioned by London’s Royal Opera House, Bravo Figaro! is the story of Mark’s relationship with his 72-year-old father Colin, an indomitable family man and a once hugely industrious South London builder with a passion for Verdi, Rossini, Puccini and Mozart. When Colin is diagnosed with a degenerative condition, his life begins to crumble. As his illness progresses, Mark stages a concert to try to connect with him through music. Widely regarded as one of the finest storytellers in the UK, Mark Thomas applies his irrepressible personality and stand-up comedy skills to this true tale. Thoughtful, moving and brilliantly performed, this vital and emotional piece of storytelling won the Edinburgh Festival’s two most coveted awards.

An exquisite retelling of the iconic Australian story

TORM BOY By Colin Thiele Adapted for the stage by Tom Holloway Storm Boy tells the captivating story of a boy’s last childhood summer spent with his reclusive dad in the wild freedom of South Australia’s Coorong. As he roams the savage landscape, navigating the waters and searching for debris and wildlife, he picks up some unlikely friends including the enigmatic Fingerbone Bill and a family of orphaned pelicans, including his favourite, Mr. Percival. Heralded by critics as “full of heart and soul” (Crikey), Tom Holloway’s writing honours the spare, unadorned style of the original text, while brilliant puppetry and sensitive direction bring the characters to life, whether human or pelican. Storm Boy’s evocation of a far-away windy beach, and its bittersweet message about growing up, has enthralled children and adults alike for decades. Whether you want to introduce a new generation of children to the story, or relive it for yourself, this is your chance to savour the wonder, sadness and hope of this home-grown classic.

A skillfully woven yarn to warm your heart

EAD FULL OF LOVE By Alana Valentine

Head Full of Love is the story of two remarkable women and their unlikely but inspiring friendship. The annual Alice Springs Beanie Festival is fast approaching and Tilly Napuljari is running out of time to finish her new creation in time to enter it for judging. Meanwhile, Sydneysider Nessa Tavistock is a long way from home, having run away to the red centre to escape her problems back in the big smoke. This intricate, warm and wisely told tale by award-winning playwright Alana Valentine (Dead Man Brake, Run Rabbit Run, Parramatta Girls) was created through extensive consultation with the Central Desert community. The result is an unsentimental, humorous and moving portrait of the complexity of cross-cultural relationships rewoven, like a beanie, into a simple and humble beauty. Sensitively directed by acclaimed theatre maker, Queensland Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Wesley Enoch, Head Full of Love is a tale of new friendships and breaking down barriers that’s as warm, charming and full of love as a handmade beanie.

YLAN THOMAS : Return Journey Original Direction by Anthony Hopkins Starring Bob Kingdom as Dylan Thomas Over 80,000 people worldwide have enjoyed this critically acclaimed production, with sell-out seasons in London, off-Broadway and at the Edinburgh Festival. Heralded by critics worldwide as a tour-de-force, this is your chance to experience Bob Kingdom’s electrifying performance as he brings Dylan Thomas’ last lecture tour to life in Anthony Hopkins’ celebrated directorial debut. Playing a man who wrestled with the psychological conflict between creative talent and self-destructive impulse, Bob Kingdom’s remarkable portrayal of his bardic countryman is tangibly heartfelt and authentic; audiences have sworn it was the poet himself on stage. Blending the stories and the poetry with incisive commentary on the nature of performing, audiences, and the American touring circuit, the audience is taken through Wales past and present. Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins’ subtle direction brings both performer and audience together in appreciation of the beauty, the humour, the passion and the wit of this writer.

A love story for the 21st Century

ex with Strangers By Laura Eason First staged by Chicago’s legendary Steppenwolf Theatre in 2011, this is storytelling at its best. Dark, sexy and funny, Sex with Strangers delves into the lives of two people equally capable of ambition, kindness and cruelty. Trapped in a rural writers’ retreat by a snowstorm, serious writer turned professor Olivia is settling down to write her second novel, which she hopes will be more successful than her first. In from the snow walks Ethan, a brash, handsome, successful Gen-Y blogger with aspirations of literary legitimacy. Olivia succumbs to his obvious charm and seemingly poetic soul. But can love really bloom between an old-school booklover and a man whose publicity-generating, tell-all memoir “Sex with Strangers” details the rambunctious sexploits chronicled on his internet blog?

Written by award-winning American playwright Laura Eason and featuring a fantastic cast in Samuel Johnson (television’s The Secret Life of Us) and Tottie Goldsmith (Grease, The Rocky Horror Show), Sex with Strangers makes insightful observations about the foibles of first impressions and life in the digital age.

An uplifting new musical honouring an Australian icon

ountry song By Reg Cribb Original concept by Michael Tuahine Inspired by real-life experiences and filled with well-known tunes, Country Song is a beautiful, musical, witty and warm journey that celebrates the healing power of music. As the newly-built Sydney Opera House throws open its doors in 1973 with an extravagant gala concert, another Australian icon is having a backstage crisis. Singing superstar Jimmy Little is to croon for the visiting Queen, but the words won’t come. Once a smiling, cheeky child of vaudevillians, now a poster boy for Indigenous performers, Jimmy wrestles with whether to take the Opera House stage or quietly fade away. In his mind he’s whisked on a road trip to his past and his story weaves into those of his contemporaries – Wilma Reading, Auriel Andrew, Bobby McLeod, Vic Simms, Roger Knox and Lionel Rose. Rising star Michael Tuahine, multi-award winning playwright Reg Cribb and acclaimed theatremaker Wesley Enoch deliver an inspirational new work that’ll warm the heart and get your toes tapping.

Profoundly personal and timely new Australian theatre

SRI LANKAN TAMIL ASYLUM Seeker’s Story as Performed by Australian Actors Under the Guidance of a Sinhalese Director By Dhananjaya Karunarathne Wollongong-based playwright and director Dhananjaya Karunarathne is widely recognised in his homeland of Sri Lanka for creating satirical and controversial works that address contemporary issues. In A Sri Lankan Tamil Asylum Seeker’s Story as Performed by Australian Actors Under the Guidance of a Sinhalese Director you are invited on a journey to examine questions of authorship and ownership, prejudice and authenticity. A Tamil asylum seeker arrives in Australia on an illegal boat, is held at a detention centre, and meets a refugee studies student who wants to record his story for his own purposes. What results is an astonishingly theatrical, politically alive, funny and searing study in political correctness. Merrigong is delighted to produce this bold and fresh new theatre piece that was originally developed and presented by the playwright himself through our independent artist program, Studio Sessions. The work now takes flight in a full-scale Merrigong production as Dhananjaya joins forces with director and dramaturg David Williams, a key artist behind the version 1.0 and Merrigong smashhit co-production, The Table of Knowledge.

Developed with the support of Playwriting Australia and through a Master of Creative Arts by Research program undertaken at the University of Wollongong.

CREATIVITY CAMPS @ IPAC

APRIL JULY & SEPT.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Our Creativity Camps offer children aged 6-13 years a range of fun performing arts activities that encourage confidence, team building and creative play. The camps are run by professional arts practitioners during the April, July and September school holidays. Check our website for more details closer to the date.

The Listies Make you LOL! Comedy for kids (and their adults) A few years ago Rich and Matt decided to shake up the world of kids’ comedy and The Listies were born. Now Australia’s most sought-after kids’ comedians, they’re returning to Wollongong to make you Laugh Out Loud! Winners of the Sydney Theatre Awards Best Production for Children (2013) and BBC Scotland Edinburgh Fringe Best Children’s Show (2011), The Listies’ mad-cap antics include alien attacks, toilet paper guns, spew, the rudest word in the world, and the most disgusting pair of undies you have ever seen in your entire life. Raucous, unruly and guaranteed to have the whole family in stitches, the theatre has never been this much fun.

The witches By Roald Dahl Adapted from the stage play by David Wood Reimagined by Lucas Jervies

The master storyteller’s tale of a brave young boy and his grandmother

When one little boy unwittingly stumbles into the annual meeting of witches, he hears their nasty plan to get rid of all the children in the world – by turning them into mice! It’s going to take smarts and sneakiness to stop them and not get squished in the process. Brave boys and girls, rat-racers and retirees are in for a wicked and wonderful time with this madcap one-man show based on Roald Dahl’s beloved tale. This bubbling concoction features Guy Edmonds (television’s A Moody Christmas) running amok in a virtuosic physical performance.
