hen it reaches its full potential, theatre has an amazing power in our community.

It can draw attention to new ideas, give a voice to the voiceless, present a magnifying glass with which to examine an important issue, shout out loud about some injustice, or simply give a yell of joy in celebration of something wonderful in our world. In short, theatre-makers aim to make a noise. We are seldom a quiet bunch. The hushed silence of a darkened theatre is just waiting to be filled with noise. So that’s what we’re aiming to do in our 2016 Season – make a noise. Some of that noise will be more figurative, like the howls of jealousy and prejudice in Shakespeare’s stunning tragedy, Othello. Some will be the loud noise of public opinion, as we give voice to some of the more than 20,000 Australians who wrote letters to Lindy Chamberlain over the last 30 years, in Merrigong’s brilliant new commissioned work, Letters to Lindy. And the noise of the political stoush, the rough and tumble of debate (and sometimes debacle) that is our democracy, when The Hansard Monologues: Age of Entitlement brings to life Australia’s 44th Parliament.

There will also be some literal noise, when shows filled with music and dance hit our stages, like Swing, the sublime romantic comedy direct from Ireland, filled with great dancing to a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack. And a whole lot more dance, when Todd McKenney and Nancye Hayes reunite on stage, returning with one of Wollongong’s all-time favourites, Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks. And there’s the charming heartbreak of Daffodils from New Zealand, with an amazing array of classic Kiwi rock and pop, performed live. In 2016, we feature some artists whose extraordinary work makes such a noise it demands to be heard. Perhaps none more so than the visionary, fearless Yaron Lifschitz, whose response to the unfolding story of Wollongong, is a breath taking work of acrobatics from his company Circa, co-produced with Merrigong, Landscape with Monsters. In recent times, not many playwrights have made as big a noise on Broadway as Ayad Akhtar has with his astounding Pulitzer Prize-winning cry of provocation on the 21st Century’s big issues, Disgraced. And we end the year with two remarkable artists, renowned performers in their respective countries, coming together to make an even bigger noise, when legendary Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly, and acclaimed Irish-French chanteuse, Camille O’Sullivan, join forces in Ancient Rain. So, have a look through the shows on offer, book your tickets, and we hope that when you join us at the theatre in 2016, you’ll be ready to do your bit – to applaud, laugh, cheer and generally...

make a noise!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The name Merrigong is thought to be a derivation of the indigenous word for the Illawarra region’s distinctive escarpment. The company’s name acts as a constant reminder that the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre sits on the ancestral land of the Dharawal people. Merrigong Theatre Company acknowledges the Dharawal people as the traditional custodians of this land. For thousands of years prior to white settlement the Dharawal people resided along the coast from Sydney to the Illawarra – dancing, hunting, sharing stories, music and family. They continue into the future as the custodians of this land, amongst the now internationally diverse community that is Wollongong.

The eagerly awaited return of an unmissable smash-hit

Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks by RICHARD ALFIERI

ne of Merrigong’s best-selling shows ever returns to Wollongong. Australia’s favourite song and dance man, Todd McKenney, again teams up with one of our leading ladies, Nancye Hayes, in Ensemble Theatre’s much-loved production Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks.

When Lily, an attractive Florida retiree, advertises for a teacher to help her master some new steps, she doesn’t bargain on being landed with Michael and his dancing baggage. As their lessons progress, Michael also discovers that Lily has more than a little emotional history under her hard exterior. A story of two opposites finding each other in the most diverse way possible: rum-cha-cha! This poignant comedy has danced from Broadway to worldwide success and features choreography by John O’Connell, known for his work on films such as Moulin Rouge! and Strictly Ballroom.

Landscape with Monsters has been created in response to the post-industrial landscapes of the Illawarra, where great natural beauty meets the scars left by the passing of the region’s industrial heyday. The work inhabits the emotional highs and lows of a place faced with uncertainty and change. The sublime acrobats of Circa smash, crash, uplift and balance as inner and outer landscapes collide, in a physical symphony to the joyous complexity of being human. A co-production between Circa and Merrigong Theatre Company, Landscape with Monsters brings together Circa’s acclaimed creative team with Wollongong artists Daryl Wallis and Toby Knyvett. A tender portrait of two generations, one shared history

4000 Miles by AMY HERZOG

F

rom one of America’s brightest playwrights, comes this compassionate and unsentimental play. 4000 Miles explores the funny, frustrating, and ultimately lifechanging relationship between a grandson learning to face his life, and a grandmother who is starting to forget hers. Twenty one-year-old Leo arrives unannounced at the Manhattan apartment of his 91-year-old Jewish grandmother Vera. Having broken up with his girlfriend and cycled across the country, he needs a place to crash for the night, no questions asked. But Vera – prickly, stubborn and sharp as a tack – isn’t about to let him off that easily. As an overnight couch-surf turns into an extended stay, the two unravel the emotional trauma of their painful family history with disarming frankness and candour. Winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play, 4000 Miles is a gently comic and realistic drama that unearths surprising parallels between two generations.

A toe-tapping, heart-warming Irish gem of a show

Swing by STEVE BLOUNT, PETER DALY, GAVIN KOSTICK & JANET MORAN

his delightful hit production from Ireland, comes to us fresh from success in New York, Paris and Edinburgh. Swing is a heart-warming romantic comedy about being brave, trying your best and thinking outside the box. Joe is a divorced father seeking a new job after losing his business during Ireland’s recession. May is a graphic artist who is looking to fill in time while her boyfriend is away. They meet at an evening dance class, and begin to fumble their way through the dance steps, romantic dilemmas, career problems and life choices. The brilliant Irish cast portray a colourful array of characters, both hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real. Real life romance, with a classic Kiwi soundtrack

T

his is far more than boy meets girl. This is real-life romance. And with a soundtrack of classic Kiwi hits performed live on stage, there’s a lot to love in this charming, award-winning show from New Zealand. Rose was 16. Eric, 18. They met at the lake by the daffodils. The same place that Eric’s parents met 20 years earlier. Was it destiny? Perhaps. But what happens after years of misread moments, too many maybes and unspoken thoughts that never go away? Inspired by private letters, interviews and family myths, the production unfolds against a backdrop of 1960s Kodak stills, Super 8 family home movies and fashion photography. Travel through a landscape of live music and heart-aching theatre in this beautiful love story, brought to life by a Kiwi cast and a live three piece band, playing an array of New Zealand pop-rock hits from Crowded House, Bic Runga, Dave Dobbin and more.

“Terrific, turbulent drama.” The New York Times WINNER PULITZER PRIZE FOR DRAMA 2013

A SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY PRODUCTION

A blistering social drama for the 21st Century

Disgraced by AYAD AKHTAR

B

ristling with wit and complexity, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Disgraced is one of the most acclaimed new American plays of recent years. In Sydney Theatre Company’s Australian premiere production, the play fearlessly explores some of the most contentious issues facing modern Western societies, including racial prejudice, Islamophobia, cultural identity and aspiration. Pakistani-American Amir Tapoor has it all – a happy marriage, a brilliant career as a lawyer and a tastefully decorated apartment in New York. Life is good until he and his artist wife Emily host an intimate dinner party. Small talk over pork tenderloin and chorizo soon turns towards a discussion of faith and politics. Secrets are revealed, tempers begin to flare, and the party spins out of control, as Amir realises that beneath all the trappings, his success has come at a price.

A mother’s loss. A nation’s obsession.

Letters to Lindy by ALANA VALENTINE

F

illed with humour and heartbreak, this stunning new work by award-winning playwright Alana Valentine (Dead Man Brake, Head Full of Love) explores the public’s relationship with one of 20th Century Australia’s most iconic figures. The court case captivated a nation. A mother accused of murdering her child, her claim – that the baby was taken by a dingo – denied and discredited by zealous police and a flawed legal system. The media circus, the rumours, the nation’s prejudices laid bare. And in the eye of the storm – Lindy Chamberlain. Over three decades, from baby Azaria’s death to the final coroner’s report, the public’s fascination with Lindy has seldom waned. The National Library in Canberra holds a collection of more than 20,000 letters to Lindy. From sympathy to abuse, from marriage proposals to death threats and photos of dogs’ birthday parties (yes, really!), the letters traverse the gamut of human response to Lindy’s story. Letters to Lindy draws on this extraordinary correspondence and interviews with Lindy herself, to create an enthralling, revealing, and long overdue dialogue between Lindy and the nation. It paints a singular portrait of the heartbreak, wisdom and resilience of a grieving mother. DIRECTOR DARREN YAP CAST INCLUDES JEANETTE CRONIN

The Hansard Monologues:

Age of Entitlement by KATIE POLLOCK & PAUL DALEY

I

n 2013, Wollongong audiences laughed and gasped in amazement at The Hansard Monologues: A Matter of Public Importance, with its entertaining analysis of Australia under the Labor Party. As the 44th Parliament of Australia nears its completion, it’s time for a theatrical reboot, as The Hansard Monologues: Age of Entitlement turns its focus to life under the Coalition. This is theatre at its most real – because, well, it is real! Drawn from the official record of Federal Parliament, The Hansard Monologues captures the passions and the policies, the characters and the crises of the nation’s discourse, distilling it into a dramatic, amusing and at times sobering ride through the big issues of our time. This is verbatim theatre of the moment: racism, climate change, travel rorts, budget repair, leadership, lifestyle choices, asylum seekers and national security are all ready to feature in the final script, which in an election year will continue to be written right up to performance.

“This company knows how to make Shakespeare fresh, accessible and relevant. Aussie Theatre

A BELL SHAKESPEARE PRODUCTION

An epic tragedy of envy, love and betrayal

Othello by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

O

ne of Shakespeare’s most moving and passionate tragedies, Othello is a devastating exploration of revenge, racism and wickedness; how a great but flawed man succumbs to jealousy, and how hatred destroys innocence. The triumphant general Othello, the Moor of Venice, returns from battle to the gratitude of the state and the love of Desdemona, who defies social convention and her father’s will to marry him. Jealousies around their match and Othello’s rise to prominence simmer to the surface. The villainous Iago, an ensign in Othello’s army, holds a grudge after being passed over for a promotion. Consumed with envy, Iago maliciously plots the downfall of his leader. Written in 1604, Othello has enthralled theatregoers throughout the centuries with its cautionary message about the dangers of the ‘green-eyed monster’. Don’t miss this gripping production directed by Bell Shakespeare’s Artistic Director Peter Evans, starring Ray Chong Nee (The Dream) as Othello and Yalin Ozucelik (The Importance of Being Earnest) as Iago.

“… an authoritative performance, steeped in vulnerability… audiences should jump at the chance to see Hazlehurst perform.” The Age

AN IF THEATRE PRODUCTION

A one woman tour-de-force from Noni Hazlehurst

Mother by DANIEL KEENE

O

ne of Australia’s best-loved actors, the award-winning Noni Hazlehurst, stars in this beautiful new work, written especially for her by acclaimed Australian playwright Daniel Keene. Hazlehurst plays Christie – a homeless, ageing alcoholic living on the outskirts of suburbia. Attracting the curiosity of locals with her colourful tales of a troubled life, her story is part truth, part fiction, but she’s no longer sure which is which. Beneath the wild exaggerations and fantastic yarns of loves lost and struggles overcome, there are memories that she would rather forget. Christie may have been cast out of society, but she can never escape from herself. Inspired in part by the writings of Dorothy Hewett and the ancient Greek play Medea, Mother is a uniquely Australian piece of theatre that honestly explores motherhood, homelessness and disconnection. Hazlehurst’s provocative, haunting performance will leave you touched with a new understanding and sympathy for those living on the farthest edges of society. conic Australian singer-songwriter, Paul Kelly, and magnetic Irish-French chanteuse, Camille O’Sullivan, star in this evocative new music theatre work. They are joined by O’Sullivan’s long-time collaborator, songwriter and pianist, Feargal Murray. Inspired by the works of W.B. Yeats and other great Irish poets, Ancient Rain combines the spoken word with a song-cycle of new compositions. Kelly and O’Sullivan, both mesmerising performers, inhabit a range of diverse characters as they reveal a tapestry of themes, from the cost of love and the price of independence, to the inadequacy of faith and the power of forgiveness. An extraordinary opportunity to see these two legendary performers in the intimacy of a theatrical setting, Ancient Rain sees Kelly’s modest yet masterful style meet O’Sullivan’s powerful vulnerability, as they take you on a journey of loss, yearning and redemption.

Never Did Me Any Harm devised by FORCE MAJEURE

D

irected by award-winning Australian director and choreographer Kate Champion, Never Did Me Any Harm is a riveting combination of theatre and movement that explores parenthood in Australia today. In a series of captivating vignettes, a mixed cast of actors and dancers recreate familiar characters found in a suburban backyard. Monologues and dance interludes are interspersed with digital projection work and real-life interviews with parents and children. Inspired by Christos Tsiolkas’ best-selling novel The Slap, Never Did Me Any Harm is a compelling work that speaks to our everyday anxieties and concerns. It has received rave reviews for its power, poignancy and distinctively Australian humour.

The Marriage of Figaro by WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART adapted by MICHAEL GOW

A

ward-winning creative duo Michael Gow and Robert Kemp have created a brand new production of Mozart’s brilliant opera, featuring stunning period costumes and a clever set. The Marriage of Figaro is the Downton Abbey of opera, but a whole lot more fun! The story follows the adventures of a wealthy household in Seville over one crazy day of disguise and duplicity. Figaro and his bride-to-be Susanna must outwit the scheming Count Almaviva to stay together. Will their wedding go ahead as planned? A talented chamber orchestra and chorus of local children will accompany some of Opera Australia’s finest singers performing Mozart’s beautiful music. Sung in English, The Marriage of Figaro is a delightful night out, suitable for the whole family. The Canberra Times

The Wharf Revue 2016 written and created by JONATHAN BIGGINS, DREW FORSYTHE & PHILLIP SCOTT

P

From the inimitable minds of Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott comes another instalment of what has become a true Sydney (and Wollongong) institution. From the movers to the shakers, from the winners to the losers, the stage will be filled with a year’s worth of foolishness. And if there’s one thing that a federal election year brings, it’s a smorgasbord of satirical goodies. There’ll be minor party pies, red meat, blue cheese and don’t forget your greens. But most of all, there’ll be laughter. And lots of it. MUSICAL DIRECTOR PHILLIP SCOTT LIGHTING DESIGNER MATTHEW MARSHALL CAST INCLUDES JONATHAN BIGGINS, DREW FORSYTHE, PHILLIP SCOTT

In the spirit of This is Spinal Tap and Flight of the Conchords, this lipstick-smeared, tantrum-loving, self-proclaimed “Best Band in the World” will take you on a wild rock ‘n’ roll ride of hilarious, catchy, award-winning pop songs. To make matters worse Mr Big Nose has mysteriously disappeared, and to top it all off Jill has fallen into a deep sleep and they just can’t wake her up. The Circa carnival comes to town with whimsical tales of creatures of land and sea, who tumble, fly, leap and spin their way through the many wondrous worlds of the animal kingdom.
