KEEPING MEREDITH STRONG

A Gift with Meaning

By Emily Parker

James and Cathy Gaynor have established an endowment that will provide scholarship support with preference given to students from the foster care system or a student with financial need majoring in theatre, art, or music. The James, Cathy, and Jamie, ’19, Gaynor Scholarship endowment started with a $25,000 gift in 2018 and an additional $25,000 in 2024.

“We made this gift in appreciation of the mission of Meredith College and to ‘pay it forward’ for the generous scholarship support Jamie received while attending Meredith,” said James, Meredith College Board of Trustees member.

This gift has a very special meaning to the Gaynor family for several reasons.

“Cathy wanted to have an impact on some students here at Meredith who can benefit from a scholarship that would take into account her background in foster care or had an interest in theatre and the arts because I think those areas are not as well represented in terms of scholarships. So we thought about it, prayed over it, and we decided this is what we wanted to be our contribution to Meredith,” said James.

“They have both beautifully invested their time, talents, and treasure into Meredith. They were the first to raise their hands offering to assist and they do a great job showing their Meredith pride. We are so grateful for all the ways the Gaynor family supports us.”

The Gaynors’ participation has ranged from serving on the Board of Trustees and Parents and Families Council to volunteering at Move-In Day, Start Strong, and Family Day.

Meredith College has partnered with FreeWill, a secure online estate planning resource, to offer a convenient and free service for its alumnae. The platform guides users through the will-writing process in about 20 minutes and provides options for including a legacy donation to support Meredith College.

The service is available to alumnae of all ages, providing tools for creating wills, beneficiary designations for nonprobate assets, advance healthcare directives, and financial power of attorney. All information provided is strictly confidential, with no information shared with Meredith unless chosen by the user.

KEEPING MEREDITH STRONG

A Love of Music Lives On

The Gwendolyn Crane-Cavin Music Scholarship Endowment has been established by Dr. Ralph Cavin. The endowment is named in memory of his wife, Gwendolyn, who was a great appreciator of music. The scholarship shows an investment in Meredith’s talented music majors and will make an immeasurable impact on the lives of the students who will receive the scholarship for years to come.

“I always said that for Gwen, ‘love was in her heart and music was in her soul,’” said Ralph. “Both of us spent most of our lives in education and believed education is critically important for the future. My children and I feel that an endowed scholarship in music is a wonderful living memorial for Gwen.”

The Cavins do not have family connections to Meredith, but Gwen played the piano and often led choirs at Jones Chapel.

“Mom did not have a direct connection to Meredith, but in a soulful sense, as a teacher, as a musician, and as an educator she had a deep resonance and a wonderful alignment with the core values and mission of Meredith College. Meredith was magnetic for her,” said Keary Cavin, Gwen’s son.

Music was always a part of Gwen’s life. Her mother made music a part of Gwen’s

After graduations from Mississippi College and Mississippi State where education and electrical engineering were their majors, the Cavins were married and moved to Orlando, Fla., for Ralph’s job at Martin Marietta. Gwen always encouraged Ralph to pursue his dreams and she wanted him to challenge himself. They eventually moved to Auburn, Alabama, where Ralph earned a Ph.D. and then became a professor and head of research at Texas A&M.

The family’s journey to Raleigh began when Ralph joined the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) as the Director of Design Sciences research programs. He became Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NC State University from 1989-94 and was Dean of Engineering at NC State from 1994-95. From 1996-2006, he served as SRC’s Vice President of Research Operations, and from January 2007-12 was chief scientist.

During part of this time, Gwen was a teacher and, after their two children were born, she juggled afterschool activities along with her duties in PTA, garden club, Sunday school, and of course choir and piano. Music was always in their life.

until her health declined. Through many health challenges and Alzheimer’s disease, her son says she was a wonderful example of how to live, how to die, and how to love.

Melanie Forchetti, Gwen’s daughter, says there are no adequate words to describe what her mother meant to her.

“Her grace, support, selflessness, and sacrifices made my dreams possible. She was an unwavering force of love for everything I did. She was always present, even when I was far from home,” said Melanie. “One of her favorite Bible verses is a window into how Mom had such strength in the face of adversity and a mantra for our family. Maybe it could help the scholarship recipient as well. ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ Philippians 4:13.”
