As we approach Christmas and the end of 2014, a year during which we have been celebrating Mercy Foundation’s 60th Anniversary, I feel especially grateful to our family of generous donors. As a member of our family, I would like to thank you for continuing to fuel the local ministries of the Sisters of Mercy providing health care, education, housing, and essential services to the poor or elderly. Whether you made your first gift to Mercy Foundation this year, or have been a donor for decades, you have positively impacted the lives of many.

We know our community will always include people in need. In the upcoming year, I look forward to us continuing our partnership as we provide the necessary funding to our local Sisters of Mercy Ministries that deliver essential support services to the most vulnerable among us.

Donors and philanthropy partners enjoy their time during the annual McAuley & Legacy Societies Celebration.

McAuley & Legacy Societies Celebration We were privileged to honor our generous donors at this year’s annual McAuley & Legacy Societies Celebration, held on Sept. 18 at The Firehouse Restaurant in Old Sacramento. It was a lovely evening enjoyed by over 170 of our partners in philanthropy. This year, 28 new McAuley members (donors who have contributed lifetime cumulative gifts of $25,000 or more) and three new Legacy members (those who have included Mercy Foundation in their estate plans) were inducted. Walt Gray, a long-time Mercy Foundation supporter and news anchor with News10, was the evening’s emcee.

A Gift that is Changing Access to Health Care A tenet of the Sisters of Mercy’s mission is providing care to those in need. In today’s world, there is a segment of that underserved population living in less denselypopulated communities which does not have access to advanced stroke and neurological care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For a patient suffering a stroke, hours away from the nearest Stroke Center, the need can be dire.

In recognition of this need, in 2008 the Harry C. & Deborah L. Elliott Family Foundation gave a $500,000 gift to Mercy Foundation to improve access to stroke care in communities outside the metropolitan Sacramento area. By the fall of that year, this generous gift had jump-started what is known today as the Dignity Health Telemedicine Network, which began the work of bridging the miles that can often separate critically ill patients from the advanced care they need so urgently.

To connect distant patients with the specialists they need, the Telemedicine Network uses remote presence technology. This technology is particularly effective in stroke care because of the very short timeframe (just three hours) in which the most effective stroke treatment must be administered. Telemedicine technology helps local physicians administer treatment quickly under the direction of the remote stroke specialist (neurologist), who is able to see and speak with both the patient and the local care team through two-way audio and visual contact. The technology is so advanced that the remote physician can even see the patient’s pupils and eye movements, using the system’s robotic cameras.

The impact of the Dignity Health Telemedicine Network is profound. In 2014, the Telemedicine Network will provide more than 6,000 Telemedicine consults to remote patients. The program has seen exponential growth every year and has added more specialties such as ICU care and mental health services. The Telemedicine Network now includes 31 facilities throughout California and Nevada.

Thanks to that first gift from the Elliott Family Foundation, the Dignity Health Telemedicine Network is providing a direct connection between highly specialized services and patients in need – truly bringing to life the Sisters of Mercy’s mission to care for all those in need.

Honors for Mercy San Juan Stroke Program Mercy San Juan Medical Center was recently recognized by The Joint Commission as the first and only Comprehensive Stroke Center north of the Bay Area. This designation recognizes the hospital for its ability to treat the most complex stroke cases and provide 24/7 access to neurology, neurosurgery, neurointerventional radiology and neurocritical care.

Mercy San Juan now is one of 77 Comprehensive Stroke Centers across the country and one of just nine in California. “Mercy San Juan Medical Center is proud to be the first health care provider in the Sacramento area to make the highest level of stroke care available to the patients who need it,” said Brian Ivie, President of Mercy San Juan Medical Center. “Patients now have access to advanced stroke care without having to travel out of the area.”

Mercy San Juan’s Comprehensive Stroke Center is part of the Dignity Health Neurological Institute of Northern California, which also includes Primary Stroke Centers at the five other Dignity Health hospitals in the Greater Sacramento region and more than 26 telestroke sites (part of the Dignity Health Telemedicine Network) across California. Dignity Health Neurological Institute’s comprehensive stroke program has been made possible in part by the generosity of Mercy Foundation donors. The Institute welcomes additional support to fund ongoing technological advancements to provide the best care possible to its patients.

Mary McDonald: Honoring a Lifetime of Generosity For all of her 97 years, Mary McDonald has lived a life built on loyalty, hard work and community.

As a young woman in the early 20th century, she worked hard for her education and fought to find work that was rewarding and challenging and where employees were treated well.

When she eventually found such a place, she made it her career home. For 31 years, she worked in the Accounting Department at McClellan Air Force Base. “They hired me for 30 days,” she remembers with a laugh. “But I enjoyed my work and did a good job and they kept me around!”

Mary’s sense of loyalty has also extended to her commitment to her neighbors and friends in Folsom, the community she has called home for as long as she can remember. Mary can recall when Folsom was just a village, with few residents, fewer storefronts and no hospital.

“I remember when you had to go to Sacramento for medical care,” Mary says.

“I was here when Jack Kipp saw the need for a hospital in Folsom and set about to build one.”

Years later, Mary’s generosity would help that hospital – now known as Mercy Hospital of Folsom – continue to meet the needs of the growing Folsom community. “I knew several Sisters of Mercy through church.

I couldn’t think of a better way to support Folsom than by donating to the hospital.”

Mary’s first gift to the Sisters of Mercy was in 1990. She has given generously in support of Mercy Hospital of Folsom over the years (including to the campaign to expand the hospital’s Emergency Department) as well as to Mercy Foundation’s Care for the Poor and Area of Greatest Need funds.

Earlier this year, Mercy Foundation presented Mary with the “Inspiring Philanthropy” award in recognition of her on-going support of the Sisters of Mercy and their ministries. In bestowing the award on Mary, Mercy Foundation recognized the depth of her commitment to the Sisters of Mercy and their ministries, as well as the exceptional degree of her generosity.

Mary McDonald continues to inspire and touch the lives of others with her generosity.

Mary’s giving spirit has also led her to look to the future as well. She has made estate plans for her philanthropic legacy, remembering the Sisters of Mercy through Mercy Foundation, something she encourages others to consider as well. “I want others to consider the expansion of their generosity – your gift can touch so many lives,” she says. “I’ve had a lot of gratification from giving.

And when I give – I don’t ever miss it!”

Mary’s life of loyalty and hard work has positively impacted so many lives and – thanks to her foresight – will continue to do so for generations to come.

Building Excellence Through Kindness: Laurie Harting Laurie Harting believes great health care starts with simple actions – a touch on the arm, a look in the eye, a reassuring word and a warm smile… “Isn’t that what caring is all about – kindness, human touch, eye contact? That is the core of what we do as health care providers,” says the new Senior Vice President of Operations for Dignity Health’s Greater Sacramento Service Area and the newest member of Mercy Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

Laurie, a registered nurse who also holds a master’s degree in business administration, comes to the Sacramento region with 30 years of experience in health care, including nearly 17 years with Dignity Health in various leadership roles. Laurie’s vision of kindness and compassion is already beginning to resonate in the Sacramento region, building upon Continued on next page 3

Dignity Health’s well-received branding campaign, Hello humankindness. “I am impressed with what I see here – with our teams and our results,” she says.

Laurie also sees humankindness being brought to life through Mercy Foundation’s Grateful Patients and Families Program, which helps patients find a path to express their gratitude for the exceptional care provided to them in Dignity Health facilities by making a gift through Mercy Foundation. “So often, we hear from patients who are truly touched by the care and the compassion they received in our hospitals. We want to empower our employees to help connect those grateful patients and families with the many ways they can support our mission.”

Laurie points to local projects such as the Alex G. Spanos Heart & Vascular Center, the Mercy San Juan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and the Mercy Folsom Emergency Department as shining examples of facilities and programs that have been profoundly touched by patients who expressed their gratitude through philanthropic support. “Given the changing landscape of health care right now, it is imperative that we continue to recognize philanthropy as a vital part of who we are. We are fortunate to live in a very committed community with supporters who have given generously and will hopefully continue to do so.”

Part of the reason Laurie believes philanthropic support has been so strong for the Sacramento area hospitals is the connection donors feel and see to the Sisters of Mercy. “There is a respect and trust in this community for the Sisters and for their mission – people know that the Sisters are good stewards of their resources and that by giving to the Sisters, the impact will be felt locally which is so important.”

Looking to the future, Laurie believes that both the spiritually based mission as well as care delivered with kindness and compassion will continue to set Dignity Health hospitals apart. “A culture of healing, a culture of compassion, humankindness… Those are the building blocks for exceptional health care.”

Lawson Mechanical Contractors Golf Tournament Benefits Mercy San Juan Medical Center's NICU Lawson Mechanical Contractors held its eighth annual golf tournament at Del Paso Country Club on Oct. 6 to benefit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mercy San Juan Medical Center through Mercy Foundation. Proceeds from this year’s tournament will purchase an innovative Panda warmer, allowing caregivers to easily access their small patients while keeping them warm and content.
