(fenbendazole) Every swine dewormer provides control of adult Ascaris suum (large roundworm). Only Safe-Guard® controls the migrating L3 and L4 stages of roundworm larvae, which may be more damaging than the adults. Some products such as Ivomec® (ivermectin), Dectomax® (doramectin) control L4 larvae in the gastrointestinal tract, but don’t control migrating L3 larvae in the lungs and liver like Safe-Guard® does! Safe-Guard® (fenbendazole) is the only product which controls L3, L4 and adult Ascaris suum stages. If your dewormer does not control whipworms and their larvae, you could have a major problem as 30–40% of all farms are infected according to published reports. Only Safe-Guard®and Atgard® have label claims for whipworm control. Safe-Guard® is the only product that controls migrating whipworm larvae. Read product labels to be sure the dewormer you select controls larvae as well as adult worms.

Remember: if a dewormer only controls adult parasites, the larval or immature stages not controlled will continue development, mature, and begin laying eggs in just a few weeks following treatment. These eggs contaminate your facility. Safe-Guard® EZ Scoop® should be mixed in feed to treat your animals. It is always recommended to follow a strategic deworming program; 1. Treat incoming gilts in isolation 2 times. 2. Deworm sows 1-2 weeks prior to farrowing. 3. Treat pigs in early finishing stage depending upon your type of facility and as part of a strategic deworming program. 4. Monitor for internal and parasite contamination. Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health can provide guidelines to help you develop an effective monitoring, plus treatment programs designed for your operation.
