Power’s 2016 Customer Service Index study. The study, now in its second year, measures UK customer satisfaction with their service experience at a franchised dealer facility for maintenance and repair work. Elements for consideration were the dealership welcome, the Service Advisor, the service facility and the cost transparency. Mercedes-Benz were followed by Land Rover then Audi. 03

Moor Power & Mercedes-AMG WITH CHARLIE BUTLER-HENDERSON

C

harlie Butler-Henderson is a man with plenty of drive but perhaps that’s not entirely surprising.

One could be forgiven for thinking that oil and adrenalin course through the veins of the racing driver, product trainer, television presenter and commentator, whose love of cars and motoring thrills is a family trait. After following in the tyre tracks of his grandfather Lionel who raced Frazer Nash cars in the 1930s at Brooklands, the now home of Mercedes-Benz World, father Guy, a member of the British karting team and sister Vicki, who has found fame behind the steering wheel and TV camera, Charlie is making his own mark in the automotive world. 04

He has raced British Touring Cars and is the reigning MINI Challenge Champion, whilst he has also become a well-known face and voice on Motors TV and has worked for some of the leading motor manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz. We were delighted that Charlie was able to join us, and an invited group of Mercedes-Benz South West customers, for this year’s AMG Performance Day. Here he was tasked with presenting our Moor Power Series, a trio of short films each focussing on an AMG model of his choice. These are available on our website and social media channels but, in the meantime, we caught up with the man himself.


Exploring Dartmoor Moor Power Series

What is Mercedes-AMG? Formerly known as AMG, Mercedes-AMG is the high performance division of Mercedes-Benz. Taking its name from those of its founders – Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Eberhard Melcher – and Grossapach, Aufrecht’s home town, it is a brand that is held in equally high esteem on the racetrack and the road. With its roots in motorsport, where Mercedes-AMG became the most successful team in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM), the name is now synonymous with power and panache on flagship Mercedes-Benz models.

Were you always destined to pursue the career you have? Talking and driving are the things I’m good at so I suppose so. I had my first drive when I was aged four or five on the family farm. Motor racing is a natural talent and you feel everything through your body – predominantly your hands and your backside – and it’s something that came to me quite easily. It must be hereditary. How are you linked to Mercedes-Benz? I’ve worked as a product trainer for them since 2010 and have attended events in Croatia, Germany, Portugal and Spain, where I’ve helped to train Retailer staff on a wide range of models including the A-Class, GLA, S-Class and GLE Coupé. I’m off to Vienna next for the new smart BRABUS model. Talk us through the models you chose for Moor Power – the G-Class, C 63 Saloon and Mercedes-AMG GT? I wanted the selection to be as diverse as possible. The G-Class is an iconic beast that has sheer grunt and the C 63 is a car that I would buy myself. As for the AMG-GT, I’m a racing driver so I would have been foolish not to have chosen it. What is it you like about the AMG-GT in particular? It’s fun, fast, low and sounds sublime – it’s rivalling the Porsche 911 and is one truly awesome car. Most importantly, how is it to drive? I’ve been fortunate to drive the car before and the power, balance and weight distribution are incredible. It just floated across the moors and looked an absolute vision with its yellow paintwork against the green backdrop. The AMG GT in Solarbeam Yellow

How was your time in Devon? It was a really enjoyable day although very cold when we were doing the piece to camera

at 7am with the wind whistling through – I think the sheep nearby looked warmer! Bovey Castle was unbelievable and it was nice to be part of such a well-organised event and have the opportunity to drive some fantastic cars in such a beautiful place and meet such lovely people. What can we look forward to from the Moor Power series? A short, sweet taster of the Mercedes-AMG range, which I hope viewers will enjoy and might inspire them to buy if not find out more about these sensational cars.

The New Mercedes-AMG 43 Series The Mercedes-AMG product range will be extended at high speed in 2016 with the introduction of its newest high performance variant; the 43 series. As standard within the new AMG family, the 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine is characterised by powerful output together with low consumption & emissions. AMG 4MATIC* allwheel drive with rear-biased torque distribution, a more direct steering ratio and sports air suspension** provide a signature AMG Driving Performance. The SLC will be the first model to receive the prestigious title, with the Mercedes-AMG SLC43 to be introduced in 2016, soon to be followed by the C-Class, E-Class, GLC and GLE. * SLC 43 is rear wheel drive ** Air suspension is only standard on the Mercedes-AMG E 43/ GLC 43/ GLE 43

THE NEW E-CL ASS SALOON

The next step towards autonomous driving

T

ake a test drive aboard the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class and you probably won’t be surprised to discover why it has been billed by the manufacturer as the most intelligent saloon in the executive sector. With significant advances in driver assistance, infotainment and control systems, coupled with ground-breaking engine technology, the tenth-generation E-Class sets a new benchmark in business travel.

The first E-Class models to arrive at Mercedes-Benz South West include the E 220 d, which boasts the manufacturer’s first all-aluminium fourcylinder diesel engine. It is joined by the E 350 d, with a petrol-electric hybrid version to follow later in the year that will achieve staggering economy of 134.5mpg (combined).

Highlights include DRIVE PILOT which actively keeps the car safely in its lane even if there are no road markings. Representing Mercedes-Benz’s latest step towards autonomous driving, the system can also identify and adapt to speed limits based on camera and navigation information. Equally impressive is Remote Parking Pilot, which provides an ingenious aid for E-Class owners and occupants in tight situations as it allows the car to be moved into and out of garages and parking spaces remotely using a smartphone app. Intelligence comes to the fore in the Saloon’s sumptuous cabin too, where a stunning widescreen cockpit display with virtual instruments that ‘floats’ in the driver’s direct field of vision can be specified. For the first time, touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel enable control of the all-new infotainment system by smartphone-style finger swipes.

Space travel will be redefined by the imminent arrival of the new E-Class Estate in Mercedes-Benz South West showrooms. The sixth-generation model offers a generous 1,820 litres of load-carrying capability and boasts a wealth of practical features together with the same intelligent innovations employed on the latest E-Class Saloon. The Estate will be available from launch with the newly-developed four-cylinder diesel engine of the E 220 d, which will be joined by the six-cylinder E 350 d before the end of 2016. W

hen John and Sue Pinkerton put their hands up to enter our E-Class competition, they probably didn’t expect to be doing the same thing when enjoying their driving prize.

The couple won our prize draw to win 48 hours with the new Saloon and some of their experience was captured on video for our social media channels, including a couple of light-hearted challenges – namely to lock and unlock the car using Mercedes me via a mobile phone and park it automatically with the Parking Pilot feature. “You’ve just got to trust the car, take your hand off the wheel and feet off the pedals and let it do its own thing,” explained Mr Pinkerton. “It is very clever as is being able to access the car remotely to switch on the air conditioning as you’re about to leave the office on a hot day so it is chilled when you get inside.” The Pinkertons are no strangers to the E-Class having acquired one of Mercedes-Benz of Exeter’s Estate demonstrators eight years ago. Bought as a 40th birthday present by Mr Pinkerton, the highly-specced E-320 Sport has now clocked up more than 162,000 miles but it could soon be succeeded by the upcoming plug-in hybrid Estate. “There is a lot of refinement over the outgoing model, it is dynamic,

very easy to drive and sport mode really did liven up with the 2.0-litre engine delivering performance comparable to my 3.0-litre,” continued Mr Pinkerton. “The new touch controls are very intuitive and having systems like Drive Pilot that can steer your car safely onto the hard shoulder if you fall asleep at the wheel are very reassuring too.” Want to find out more about John and Sue’s test drive? The emergency call feature will activate if the system detects an airbag deployment or if the seat belts are tensioned. Mercedes-Benz of Exeter currently has two apprentices training as Passenger Car Technicians, both of whom are excelling in their studies. Jimmy Penlington and James Childs are both six months ahead of their training programme and are both a fantastic asset to the team. With training blocks undertaken at our head office in Milton Keynes combined with hands-on training within our workshops, Mercedes-Benz apprentices are equipped to learn the skills essential to providing first class technical support, with training that adapts as the industry progresses. The creation of Star View is one of these new developments. Star View is a platform that allows our technicians to video any vehicle that comes in for a service, in order for them to talk the owner through their findings and allow for complete transparency with any work identified. Exeter-born Jack is club captain of the West Country’s premier rugby club Exeter Chiefs, which this season came close to securing its first-ever Aviva Premiership title. With just 5 minutes remaining, the Chiefs fought back to come within three points of winning against Saracens in a closely contested final that attracted an attendance of over 76,000. Dogged Saracens forged a late-minute victory in the Twickenham Aviva Premiership final to secure both a league and European Cup double. Jack started his rugby career with youth side Crediton, represented the England Students and played for the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. Aged 21, he signed his first professional contract with Championship club Doncaster Knights. Consistent with the adage that form is temporary and class is permanent, Jack is a firm believer that you have to make things happen when it comes to front-line success.

I

enjoy the perfect role for an engineering-minded driving enthusiast. My position involves sharing expert knowledge to assist and inform new customers at the very beginning of their journey with Mercedes-Benz South West. Car buyers have the opportunity to assess their preferred model line-up and range with support from a trained product specialist. This allows us to drill down and explore specific areas of interest in an open no-pressure environment. Diversity of customer base will continue to evolve as the Mercedes-Benz model range expands still further. After vehicle handover to customers, it’s important also to help customers fine-tune the performance and system setup of their new Mercedes. Contact with service customers is made regularly to ensure technical questions are addressed at the outset. For me, it’s about constant back-up and support for customers, even when they haven’t purchased from us. The technology is increasing at such a rapid rate we need to keep people up to date, and it’s nice for them knowing someone is on hand to help with any questions. Training and experience are key in getting to grips with a burgeoning model range. Capturing regular technical and product updates, coupled with annual international training programmes from Mercedes-Benz and gives me an opportunity to stay up to date. And I enjoy full-throttle training in any event. It’s not often you get to test the limits 22

I gave the new Mercedes-AMG A45 a strong review in a recently published piece: this car leapfrogs competitors with its world-beating 381hp 2.0-litre engine. Noise is a big thing for me when it comes to car performance, it adds another dimension to the driving experience that can’t be made up or described. Especially with the new BiTurbo V8 in the Mercedes-AMG, it’s like being followed by a thunderstorm. I also take a keen interest in the dynamic aspect of the driving performance. While it’s fun to go fast in a straight line, for me it’s more about overall handling dynamics – how well you can throw it into corners and come out the other side under control. Mercedes-Benz is a pretty special automotive brand, as it is pure and not diluted. This is reinforced by the Mercedes-AMG philosophy of one man, one engine: dynamic and constantly innovating.
