Have you tried the latest craze of Mountain Biking? Here are some tips and techniques to help you master this ever growing sport. Being a relative newbie to the sport, I have put together some handy mountain biking tips and techniques to help you ease into the sport. Mountain biking is rapidly growing in popularity due to the versatility of mountain bikes which allow you to explore the beautiful off-road areas of your country. It is a great way to de-stress, keep fit, and gives you an overall workout, utilising not only your legs, but your back, arms and your core muscles which you are constantly using for stabilisation. Some important things you will need to get you started areA good helmet, gloves, sunglasses, padded pants, a lightweight riding shirt, water bottle or camelback and sunscreen. If you haven't ridden a bike for awhile, I suggest that you go for some small rides around your neighbourhood to get used to pedalling and the feel of the bike. Practice sitting and standing while pedalling and make sure that your seat is set at the correct height allowing your legs to be extended to approximately 70-90 percent at the end of the down stroke. Remain in a relaxed position without locking out your elbows and keep a firm grip on the handle bars. Practice changing your gears on flat ground and on hills, getting used to the gears needed to climb hills and to coast downhill. If you can, try and drop off a gutter or curb, standing to allow your knees to absorb the impact. It won't take you long to work out how to do should this, just take it slow to start and try smaller gutters to start. To get over small obstacles, make sure that you approach the obstacle from head on, use you momentum and lift the front tyre onto or over the obstacle, keep pedalling and let the back tyre move over the obstacle. The best way to get started is to just do it. Although a bit daunting at first, start off with easier rides on dirt tracks and beaches until you build up your confidence, strength and endurance. As the saying goes "you are fit for what you do". This is true of mountain biking as well. Mountain biking utilises muscles in a different way to other sports and although you may be fit for say running, the actions used in running differ greatly to mountain bike riding, so therefore to improve your mountain biking skills, the best thing to do is ride. In my opinion, a good mountain biking tip is to start building the muscles for riding by attending Spin classes. I've found that Spinning really helps to build the quads and this makes it easier to climb hills and makes you less tired at the end of a ride. And ultimately, just do it! It gets easier and less daunting with each ride, so swallow your fear and get on your bike and ride!

For a more extensive guide I highly recommend Mountain Bike Guide for Beginners. It is an in

depth guide for beginners and intermediate riders to help you get more out of your cycling and learn advanced riding skills.
