There is some spectacular volcano scenery to be found in locations around the world - with the Canary Islands arguably playing host to one of the most stunning volcanic landscapes in Europe. Visitors to the island of La Palma can enjoy the sight of a whole host of impressive volcanoes thanks to the Ruta de los Volcanes - Volcanoes Hiking Trail - that winds its way through the Cumbre Vieja Nature Park. The park is in the core area of Malta's World Biosphere Reserve and the hiking path allows travellers to drink in the full sight of the area's volcanoes over the course of the six to eight-hour trek. It starts at the Refugio del Pilar - other wise known as El Paso - and continues uphill to Birigoyo's summit, at which point walkers can opt to head to the top or travel around it towards Fuencaliente. The volcanoes of San Juan, La Deseada, La Barquita, Hoyo Negro and Martin can then be enjoyed over the rest of the hike, providing some of the most awe-inspiring views to be found anywhere in the Canaries. Of course, there's more to La Palma than its volcanoes, so when you've seen these impressive peaks you should take the time to explore the island's other attractions as part of your Canaries cruise adventure. La Palma has more greenery than other parts of the Canary Islands thanks to the fact that it is more watery than its sister isles due to being home to a number of small rivers. As such, there is plenty of flora and fauna to go in search of, but if you'd rather raise your eyes skywards towards space, you might want to head to the Roque de los Muchachos Astrophysics Observatory. La Palma is one of the best places globally from which to gaze at the stars due to its remote location and lack of light pollution. While it is only possible to visit the observatory on one of the few days in the summer when it is open to the public, you can still take in some wonderful views of the island and the nearby Caldera de Taburiente National Park. La Palma also harbours several fascinating museums and a number of restaurants serving up locally produced wine and some exquisite cakes and desserts, among other dishes.
