Study Finds Multiple Types of Schizophrenia on The Basis of Anatomical Features Mental disorder schizophrenia can be identified by symptoms like delusions, confusion, hallucinations, behavioral changes and learning disabilities. However, not all patients show these symptoms because of which a recent study, published in Schizophrenia Bulletin in February 2018, has suggested the presence of different types of schizophrenia. The researchers have found evidence that there might be different types of schizophrenia, contrary to the preexisting notion that all patients share similar symptoms. On studying and comparing the brain scans of 71 people struggling with the disorder with the healthy brain scans of 74 individuals, the researchers found some anatomical structures that could be linked to at least two subtypes of the disease. On comparing the scans, the team discovered differences in the brains of those who had the disorder and those who didn’t. Another amazing revelation was that even the brains with the disorder exhibited further disparity. Patients who suffered from the disorder for a longer period were prone to social withdrawal compared to those who had it for a shorter period. The latter experienced more hallucinations and had a smaller volume in the frontal region of the brain. Schizophrenia can be treated by medication and therapy and the best results are achieved when the treatment is tailored to meet individual needs. If MRI scans can help in identifying different types of schizophrenia, the physicians can customize the therapy requirements accordingly. The group of researchers is now analyzing 3,000 more brain scans in order to identify more anatomical structures and hence, more subtypes of the disorder which might be critical in the disorder management. Self-help strategies to cope with schizophrenia The cause of schizophrenia is unknown and scientists believe that genes and environmental influences are responsible to some extent. Although the disease cannot be cured fully, some

self-care strategies can help manage the condition in a better way and improve the overall quality of life. Some of these are given below. 1. Quit alcohol, drugs and smoking: People who drink, take drugs or smoke are more likely to experience severe symptoms of the disorder as long-term use of these substances causes irreversible damage to the brain. 2. Maintain healthy weight: The antipsychotics prescribed for managing schizophrenia often slow down metabolism. Therefore, one should commit to eating healthy and devoting time to some form of physical activity on a daily basis. 3. Get quality sleep: People struggling with schizophrenia either suffer from little or too much sleep. It is important to have an uninterrupted sleep of at least eight hours every day to relax the muscles and nerves. In the absence of adequate sleep, the brain remains undernourished and the body feels lethargic all the time. A person can sleep peacefully by avoiding caffeine and mobile phones at bedtime, maintaining a regular sleep cycle and following a routine. 4. Stay connected: It is important to have positive influences in life and for this, one must stay connected with loved ones and friends. It is also critical to stay connected with support groups and treatment specialists who facilitate recovery, attend meetings and get the benefit from aftercare services. 5. Identify signs of relapse: Relapse can be prevented by staying compliant to the treatment. Developing an understanding of the triggers and learning coping mechanisms can help to a great extent. Recovery road map If the self-help strategies do not help, one must seek professional support at the earliest. Ignoring the symptoms for long or delaying the treatment can worsen the situation. Mental disorders can strike any person of any age but the warning signs are always there. Family members and friends can act as a support system in identifying the problem and encouraging the affected person to seek help from a mental health care expert.
