ACTIVITY GUIDE SUMMER 2017

Director’s Message

April 12, 2017, is a significant date in the Menlo Park Community Services Department. On that date five years ago Mr. John Arrillaga completed the last of three buildings he had remodeled or constructed for the City of Menlo Park. The new buildings have enabled us to offer more and higher quality classes and to serve more members of our community while improving efficiencies and saving tax payer dollars. Mr. Arrillaga’s company constructed the Arrillaga Family Gymnasium first. The gymnasium was made to accommodate two full sized basketball courts side by side with room to spare. Area school leagues for younger children are able to have four games going at one time in the half sized courts. Mr. Arrillaga said he wanted to build the gymnasium because he made his first basket in a basketball game in the old Menlo Park Burgess Gym. He went on to play basketball at Stanford University. The new gymnasium is fully equipped for basketball, volleyball, badminton, floor hockey, CrossFit and an abundance of other sports. Upon completion of the gymnasium, the Arrillaga team remodeled the recreation center, now the Arrillaga Family Recreation Center. The old, dated rooms were made larger with many windows, glass walls and elongated doors to give the building natural light and an open modern look. The large patio was enhanced to accommodate weddings and other special events. A smaller patio was added outside two other meeting rooms allowing for smaller multi-use events. The remodel also included combining two smaller rooms into one larger, more programmable space and new “spring” dance floors to provide the proper ergonomics for fitness and dance

classes. New restrooms were created and sinks were installed in classrooms to enable the participants to attend flower arranging and art classes. The last building to be completed was the Arrillaga Family Gymnastics Center on April 12, 2012. The old gymnasium and gymnastics building were torn down for this project. The footprint of the gymnastics center was enlarged to make the building about two and a half times larger than the original size in order to accommodate the demand in this popular program. The building was filled with Olympic quality apparatus, an area for men’s gymnastics, and a preschool area complete with a toddler toilet. The gymnastics center’s participation has almost doubled from about 1,000 participants in the old building to 1,700 now and we still experience waiting lists for some classes. On May 5 from 2:00–4:00 p.m. the Arrillaga Family Gymnastics Center is planning to show its appreciation to the Arrillaga Family and all the people responsible for giving the community a wonderful gymnastics facility by hosting a 5 year birthday party for the Center. The Boys and Girls Gymnastics Teams will be performing routines and some of our Silks Program participants will be performing as well. We hope you’ll mark your calendar and join us for this celebration of our beautiful facilities.

CHESS WIZARDS SUMMER CAMP (Ages 6–12)

Chess Wizards is one of the largest chess academies in the nation. Chess Wizards is offering specially designed camps that cater to all levels of chess ability. Each child is challenged by fun games and lessons from real Wizard teachers. We run a number of tournaments, school matches, and winter/summer camps to challenge our students. It is proven that chess enhances cognitive development in children, improves both verbal and mathematical skills, and increases all levels of academic performance! Playing chess stimulates the mind and helps children strengthen skills such as focusing, visualizing goals, abstract thinking, and forming concrete opinions. Chess Wizards is so successful because of our unique approach. Classes are based on our original, fun, and high-energy Chess Wizards curriculum. Regardless of ability, Chess Wizards makes chess fun for all! Instructors (“Wizards”) provide all the materials necessary for your child to participate in the class and no additional purchase is required to attend. Instructor: Chess Wizards Staff Location: Burgess Park, Picnic Area

Camp starts at 9:00 a.m. but you can drop off as early as 8:45 a.m.! Orientation will be on Monday at 9:00 a.m., and this is an opportunity for us to get to know the campers and for the campers to learn camp rules and expectations and meet their counselors. Throughout the camp they will be taught the skills of putting, chipping, bunker shots, driving and midrange game. We will take them into our driving range where they will be able to fine-tune their swings. We believe the best way for young golfers to learn is by allowing them to play on a real golf course, as opposed to just a driving range. We also teach them golf etiquette, which is very important to use on a golf course. Hot lunch is served daily for all campers. JOINT POINT ◊ FOREVER FIT This class has beginnings as an experimental “posture class” for dancers. Marianne Crowder taught it for over 50 years in and around Menlo Park, eventually calling it “Mariantics”. This is a “no pain, no sweat” exercise form, with strong roots in modern dance and liberally sprinkled with exercises designed to correct bad posture and its negative effects. Of course, the muscles are involved, but this class is not about strength training or building aerobic capacity–it is all about joint health and feeling really good! Cyndi Jung, long-time student and admirer of founder Marianne Crowder, has been teaching since 2009. $10 drop-in fee. For details, call 650678-5487. No class 7/3, 7/10, 7/31, 8/7. Instructor: C.
