ACTIVITY GUIDE FALL 2017

Director’s Message If you want a happy family – get out more! Science shows that spending time in the great outdoors can actually make you happier and healthier. Escaping to the woods, mountains or even your neighborhood park helps both your body and your brain. Taking in a bit of nature can help your brain in more than one way. Research is beginning to show that outdoor hours may increase concentration skills. One study compared concentration between children with ADHD who played outside, versus those who played inside, after school and on weekends. Kids who spent time in green, outdoor spaces reported fewer symptoms of ADHD, even when the exact same activities were compared. Taking a stroll can also increase creativity. Recent research has found that walking increases creative production. And while walking anywhere — whether through the woods or around a park — is beneficial in that it prompts creativity, researchers found that the actual act of spending time outside in the fresh air is a quick way to kick your brain into high gear. Ditch the caffeine and stick to a walk in the park. Some say that just 20 minutes outside can wake you up as much as one cup of coffee. The outdoors may even help us age gracefully. Research published in the Journal of Aging Health shows that getting outside on a daily basis may help older people stay healthy and functioning longer. Participants in the study who spent time outdoors every day at age 70 showed fewer complaints of aching bones or sleep problems, among other healthrelated problems, at age 77 than those who did not head outside each day. Experts now say that in addition to helping decrease stress levels, spending more time outdoors shift moods toward the positive. The theory is that we like things that are inherently good for us and our survival, which is why trees and other natural elements can help lift our moods. Menlo Park has over 200 acres of parks, open spaces and play areas for you to get out into. Check out our wide array of options and opportunities at menlopark.org/parks for places to play, picnic, walk, breathe, create, de-stress, wake up and get happy.

This course is rated a 2.5 – 3.0, which means after the course, you’ll be able to judge where the ball is going and you’ll be able to tackle a short rally with players that have the same basic ability.

501 Laurel St., Menlo Park, CA Phone: 650-330-2224 CLASSES The Menlo Park Gymnastics Program is a fun, comprehensive, educational, recreational, and developmental program for gymnasts of all ages. Classes are held at the Arrillaga Family Gymnastics Center, Monday through Saturday. Our purpose is to teach children first, gymnastics second, and safety always. Our mission is to create classes in which children experience the joy of movement, have the opportunity to make new friends, and learn skills that apply to gymnastics and other sports. Please see “Registration Information” on the page after the table of contents. A $9 mandatory insurance fee per student is included in the session fee. A $4 equipment fee is included in each registration and is used to purchase equipment for the Gymnastics facility.

HELPFUL INFORMATION Due to the nature of our developmental program and the fact that most classes are at maximum enrollment, absolutely no make-ups or trial classes will be allowed. We do however allow two make up classes for missed classes per session for our preschool program, please call (650) 330-2224 for more information. We will not provide make-ups the last two weeks of the session and make-ups do not carry over to the next session.

Registration is not accepted over the phone; however, please call (650) 330-2224 with any questions. Class cancellations will not be accepted after the first month of the session. We also will not be transferring children who have a birthday during the session to a higher class level (NewStars-3 to a MiniStars-4 class because they turned 4). Students are asked to wait in designated areas until directed into the gym by an instructor, no students are allowed on any equipment until a coach is present. Girls should wear a leotard or shorts and a T-shirt, long hair must be tied back, and no jewelry should be worn. Boys should wear shorts and a T-shirt or sweats, no jeans, zippers, belts, or loose fitting clothing should be worn. Shoes, socks, and all personal belongings should be left in the cubbies. Absolutely no food or gum is allowed in the gym at any time. Parents are welcome to observe classes from the viewing area, (exception being a parent enrolled with a child in the KinderGym or KinderStars program). Parents in a parent participation class are respectfully asked not to use their cell phones, stay with their class and that all parents stay off the equipment for the children’s safety. No flash pictures in the gym at any time. Please make every effort to have your child arrive for class on time and prepared to participate. Teacher’s assignments will be posted at the Gymnastics Lobby however; we reserve the right to make schedule/ teacher changes as necessary to accommodate the program.

Preschool Classes

NEWSTARS

Our program offers a range of motor skills designed to encourage whole body exercise, strength development, and coordination. Classes are structured to provide a fun, nurturing, safe environment in which all children have equal opportunity to participate and learn at their own pace. Children that change ages during the session will not be able to transfer to an older class. For instance, if a 3 year old turns 4 in October they will not be allowed to transfer to the MiniStars class at that time.

KINDERGYM A loosely-structured parent participation class, encouraging children to explore by climbing, crawling, rolling, walking and running on a variety of equipment in a safe environment. This is a great opportunity for socialization for children as well as for the parents and caregivers. No class 11/9, 11/23, 11/24, 11/25. MON

A non-parent participation class, allowing students to develop independence. Students will be guided through games, gross and perceptual motor activities and practice taking turns and following directions. Children experiencing difficulty with separation may be asked to join a KinderStars class. No class 11/9, 11/23, 11/24, 11/25. TIMES

Adult Classes JOINT POINT ◊ FOREVER FIT This class has beginnings as an experimental “posture class” for dancers. Of course, the muscles are involved, but this class is not about strength training or building aerobic capacity – it is all about joint health and feeling really good! Cyndi Jung, long-time student and admirer of founder Marianne Crowder, has been teaching since 2009. $10 drop-in fee. For more information, call (650) 678-5487.
