ACTIVITY GUIDE WINTER/SPRING 2020

Director’s Message Big vision for the City’s parks and recreation facilities After a 2 year process involving the participation of 2,500 people through various forms of outreach, a review and comparison of the City’s parks and facilities to other cities and review of current trends and best practices, the City Council approved the Parks and Recreation Facilities Master Plan (Plan) at their meeting on October 15, 2019. This action establishes a blueprint to expand, improve and protect the City’s assets and provide for recreation opportunities for the future. The Plan provides for 123 recommendations covering all parks and recreation facilities throughout the City ranging from landscaping and lighting improvements in our parks to the creation of entirely new buildings, as well as assessing new uses for existing spaces based on community need. Most of the recommendations were straightforward or programmatic and would be implemented through the annual budgeting process and through regular City operations. There were 44 complex projects identified and rated and prioritized based on a set criteria to determine which projects would have the greatest impact on achieving the Plan’s goals as well as having the greatest benefit to parks and recreation users. Some of the projects receiving the highest priority are listed below. •

Onetta Harris Community Center, Senior Center & Youth Center–Complete a detailed feasibility study for a multi-generational center

Bedwell Bayfront Park–Implement the recommendations from the park master plan

Burgess Pool–Evaluate installing permanent retractable dome over instructional pool

Burgess Park–Reconfigure baseball diamond for multisport overlay

Willow Oaks Park–Complete improvements to dog park and to add restroom

Sharon Park–Upgrade park infrastructure, pathways, landscaping and lighting

Menlo Children’s Center–Evaluate ability to renovate existing building, removing wall, create kitchen, storage and reception space

Burgess Park–Consider expansion of Snack Shack and add shade and seating

Karl E. Clark Park–Consider adding a picnic area with shade

HI FIVE LIL BASKETBALLERS

HI-FIVE LIL SPORTS

Hi-Five Little Ballers is a weekly developmental basketball program for children 3-5 years old. We believe the game of basketball serves to help children build self-esteem, gross motor skills, coordination, athleticism, & much more. We’ll help each child to get a feel for the ball and their ability to dribble, pass, shoot, rebound, & play defense. For older kids, we’ll place more emphasis on teamwork, conditioning, and playing the game. This program will be the training ground for our Hi-Five Hoops League for K-2nd Graders. Hi-Five’s mission is to help the next generation develop a passion for sports – one program, coach, and child at a time. Players will be introduced to new skills each week, but that doesn’t mean they will forget about the skills they have previously learned! Our coaching staff does an outstanding job of reviewing the drills and movements taught in class. Hi-Five coaches also put a strong emphasis on explaining each and every activity so players not only know how to do the drills correctly, but also know when and where to use these skills on the court!! For more information, log onto www.Hifivesports.com. No Class 2/16.

(Ages 3–5)

(Ages 3–5)

Catch, throw, & hit a baseball. We will focus on player development and the overall understanding of each sport, and stress SPORTSMANSHIP, TEAMWORK, and FUN for the entire 50-minute class session! Hi-Five’s ultimate goal is to help children build strong physical, intellectual & emotional foundations that will help them succeed on & off of the field! The main goal at Hi-Five is for players to gain confidence, learn basketball, and create a great relationship with their coach. We teach the kids fundamentals of basketball & skills to become a better athlete. To increase skill level, we’ve extended the season & times while using our veteran coaches to maintain & increase a better experience for both the kids and parents. CLINIC & DRAFT: We’ll put each age group through a clinic featuring a series of drills & scrimmages designed to prepare for the upcoming season. At the clinic’s end, using a traditional draft format, our coaching staff will create the teams as evenly as possible. It is based on what we see in the clinics and already know of many of the children. The schedule breakdown is 1.25 hours per session. We split the kids into small teams & they will play a schedule of games/practices. No Class 2/16. For more information, visit www.Hifivesports.com. Rhea has a rare talent of training kids while giving them room for their own creativity. I highly recommend this class!”

Community Services FRENCH CLUB

FUNDAMENTALS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Our French Club program is the perfect place for middle-school aged kids to begin or continue their French language-learning adventure. Each member will receive a 1-hour French Tutoring session for FREE! Being a French Club member will not only stimulate the mind and significantly enhance French language skills, but will also enhance multi-cultural awareness & sensitivity because we present the language as a lens to view and appreciate the diversity of the major French speaking nations of the world. We take a very unique & youth-relevant approach to the French language which captures their natural curiosity by examining, for example, the significant influence the French language has had upon the formation of the English language and American culture, fashion & food.

AI is the future, & Gen Z must be prepared. At EASE, we want to make AI education accessible to Gen Z. We will define basic AI concepts, describe AI functions, apply principles of coding to demonstrate understanding of AI concepts, & evaluate applications of AI technologies. Our goal is to make learning AI fun through emphasis on the non-technical components of learning, combining art & multimedia. Students learn computer science in the context & concentration of STEAM education, and learn soft-skills such as presentation techniques, leadership, & collaboration. No class 3/31.

We started a co-ed youth water polo club 7 years ago and it is still alive and kicking. We cater mostly to the youth in the surrounding neighborhood and provide an opportunity for them to learn the game with a dedicated coach and they get the opportunity to test their skill in intrasquad matchups and against other youth teams in the region. Basic concepts and fundamentals are taught in preparation for players to go and play on their high school teams if that is a desired outcome. LEVEL

KINDERSTARS

Our program offers a range of motor skills designed to encourage whole body exercise, strength development, and coordination. Classes are structured to provide a fun, nurturing, safe environment in which all children have equal opportunity to participate and learn at their own pace. Children that change ages during the session will not be able to transfer to an older class. For instance, if a 3 year old turns 4 in October they will not be allowed to transfer to the MiniStars class at that time.

KINDERGYM A loosely-structured parent participation class, encouraging children to explore by climbing, crawling, rolling, walking and running on a variety of equipment in a safe environment. This is a great opportunity for socialization for children as well as for the parents & caregivers. No class 1/20, 2/17, 4/17, 5/25. MON

During this three-hour class, we work as partners and in small groups in a supportive environment to build and hone our personal stories and to present them in compelling ways. We illuminate the ingredients that make stories come alive.

Newborns 101

BABY INS & OUTS

Expecting a new baby can be one of the most exciting and stressful times for families. Although there are many classes available, they fill quickly and very few focus almost exclusively on the newborn. This series is to help demystify baby behaviors so that families can approach the big day with confidence. Brittany Weldon, MD, IBCLC, brings over 13 years of experience caring for new babies, and she is dedicated to helping each family reach its unique parenting goals without undue stress. Each class will be 2 hours long and each slot is for a parenting pair, so please bring your partner! For more information, please call Newborn Transitions at (650) 293-0650, or email at bweldon@newborn-transitions.com.

BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER

NEW

This class focuses on the time surrounding delivery, which is busy for the parents and the baby! What are the behaviors of a newborn immediately after birth? How do those needs and behaviors change over the first few days of life? How can a family prepare for the whirlwind of giving birth based on the needs of the baby? All of these questions, and more will be presented in an interactive and positive way with plenty of time for questions and discussion. Instructor: B. NEW

Doctors working with newborns hear more questions about what goes into and comes out of the baby than any other topic. How do I know if my baby is getting enough to eat? What is the poop supposed to look like and how much should there be? When does spit-up become vomiting? What does pink urine mean? Bring your inner child’s sense of humor and your questions, because there will be plenty of time for discussion. Instructor: B. BABY BEHAVIORS, SELF, FAMILY & SOCIETY

NEW

In this class we will cover some basic baby behaviors including sleep, feeding cues, & fussiness patterns. What kinds of behaviors are concerning? We will also address the introduction of a newborn into its larger context – the family and society. How can older siblings be included to minimize jealousy? How can visitors be useful rather than extra work? What are the important actions parents need to take for self-care in the first few weeks in order to maintain their sense of individual identity? When can the baby go outside? We will also address returning to work, including an overview of a mother’s rights in the workplace and where to get more information. Instructor: B. JOINT POINT ◊ FOREVER FIT This class has beginnings as an experimental “posture class” for dancers. Marianne Crowder taught it for over 50 years in and around Menlo Park and eventually called it “Mariantics”. This is a “no pain, no sweat” exercise form, with strong roots in modern dance and liberally sprinkled with exercises designed to correct bad posture and its negative effects. Of course, the muscles are involved, but this class is not about strength training or building aerobic capacity – it is all about joint health and feeling really good! Cyndi Jung, long-time student and admirer of founder Marianne Crowder, has been teaching since 2009. $10 drop-in fee. For more information, call (650) 6785487.
