ACTIVITY GUIDE FALL 2019

Director’s Message Parks Make Life Better! Menlo Park Community Services has kicked off a new Parks Make Life Better! campaign, which you will soon see as a common focal point among our various events and programs. This nationwide campaign launched by the California Parks and Recreation Society showcases the important work that we do and demonstrates how these programs make an impact in the community.

MENLO PARK FACILITY RENTALS

Did you know that of the 98% of Californians who use parks and recreation services, 95% of them attend with friends or family? Residents have told us how much their City parks and recreation programs mean to them as indicated in a city-wide customer satisfaction survey where 80% of residents said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the City’s parks and recreation programs and events. Our programs facilitate opportunities for social connections, human development, and lifelong learning through play, nature, exercise and gathering spaces. Parks and Recreation make lives and communities better NOW and in the FUTURE. PLAY Safe, outdoor space Parks are safe, outdoor play spaces. NATURE Beauty and serenity Being in nature makes us feel alive. EXERCISE Healthy movement Recreation programs make it easy to stay healthy. POSITIVE SPACES Free-time fun Neighborhood parks are free, fun and keep our youth engaged. GATHERING PLACES Socializing and learning Parks are the common ground that connects us all. Bullying continues to be a major issue, despite the fact that awareness of the problem is at an all-time high. We can ALL take responsibility in putting an end to bullying. It is a rampant and serious problem that comes in many forms, and in various degrees. In a world where youth are exposed to adults, leaders, and even nations that are bullying each other, we believe that the end must begin with the individual. This two-day workshop will give you the tools needed to help you understand the many facets of bullying, ways to deal with it, and how to help others so you can be an upstander and not a bystander.

The main goal and priority at Hi-Five is for all the players to gain confidence, learn the ins and outs of basketball, and gain a great relationship with their coach and Hi-Five. With our highly trained staff our job is to teach the kids the fundamentals of basketball and skills to become a better athlete. To increase the kids skill level, we’ve decide to extend the season and times while using our veteran coaches this year to maintain and increase a better experience for both the kids and parents. CLINIC & DRAFT: We’ll put each age group through a clinic featuring a series of drills & scrimmages designed to prepare them for the upcoming season. At the clinic conclusion, using a traditional draft format, our staff will create teams as evenly as possible based on the clinic & the child’s previous Hi5 experience. Community Services GROUP PIANO CLASSES FOR CHILDREN

MELODY’S PIANO BEGINNERS

Learning to play the piano is FUN! We believe that piano lessons should be enjoyable & productive, not dull and isolated. Each student has access to a piano or keyboard in class, however, a piano or keyboard is needed to practice at home. We hold a recital at the end of the session. A $25 materials fee is payable to instructor on the first day of class. Classes with 3 students will be reduced to 35 minutes. No class 10/9, 11/27.

SOUND RECORDING FOR FILM (Ages 18+)

NEW

Sound is one half of a video production – the often overlooked half. Audio is at least as important as video, if not more so, yet high-quality video is often accompanied by poor-sounding audio. Want to know what goes into creating a professionalsounding audio track? In this 4-hour workshop, we’ll cover the basics of sound and sound processing so that your videos sound as good as they look. Examples will be shown using Audacity and Adobe Audition. Topics covered include basic sound theory, noise reduction, dialog editing, processing (compression, equalization and reverb), sound effects and mixing. TENNIS Menlo Swim & Sport is proud to announce our partnership with Kim Grant Tennis Academy to provide tennis lessons for all ages in the Menlo Park community. Our partnership strongly believes all children should have an equal opportunity to explore their talents and motivations through sports. There is one central element to everything we do with our Junior students: to teach and inspire. That’s it! That is the heart of a great tennis instructor. We teach your children do develop their tennis talent and inspire them to foster their motivations; both in tennis and in life in general. Whether your child is interested in tennis recreationally, aspiring to become a professional player, or anywhere in between, we are committed to helping each student get the most out of their tennis experience in a fun and positive environment. We do not measure our success as an organization by the number of trophies our students win or by the number of children that are enrolled in our classes. We measure our success by the number of smiles on their faces, by the sportsmanship shown to competitors, by the positive remarks about our Coaching Staff and by the motivation to improve as a player and a person. Below are some of the basic tenets that are ever-present in our Junior lessons we have to ensure your children are getting the most from their time with us: Customization – students learning at their own pace Engagement – plenty of physical movement Challenge – promoting risk taking & experimentation Camaraderie – students motivation one another Laughter – students enjoying themselves and their classes! Please check our website: www.menloswim/tennis.com for more information on dates, times, levels, coaching and prices.

Jazzercise–where fun meets fitness! Dance cardio plus strength for a heart healthy whole body work-out. New music and new moves will help you stay motivated and get results. Make-ups allowed during weekday classes or crossovers. No Class 11/2, 12/7.

This class has beginnings as an experimental “posture class” for dancers. Marianne Crowder taught it for over 50 years in and around Menlo Park and eventually called it “Mariantics”. This is a “no pain, no sweat” exercise form, with strong roots in modern dance and liberally sprinkled with exercises designed to correct bad posture and its negative effects. Of course, the muscles are involved, but this class is not about strength training or building aerobic capacity – it is all about joint health and feeling really good! Cyndi Jung, long-time student and admirer of founder Marianne Crowder, has been teaching since 2009. $10 drop-in fee. For more information, call (650) 678-5487. No class 9/30, 10/21, 11/11, 12/2.
