Memphis Restaurant Association

Message from the PRESIDENT Dear Fellow Members: The MRA has been hard at work to protect your business again! Recently, the Tennessee Alcohol Beverage Commission abruptly and without any notice or input from licensees or the public, announced a re-interpretation of a law regarding the sale of ‘pre-mixed’ drinks. This re-interpretation would have banned the current practice of infusing or blending alcoholic beverages prior to the immediate sale to the consumer, breaking a 40 year precedent of such sales. Had this gone into effect, establishments selling anything from Sangria to Margaritas to Infused Vodkas would have been penalized with hefty fines starting this month and subsequently forced to take these items off their menus. The Memphis artisan cocktail culture, which has just come into its stride, would have been completely sidelined as the TABC was also going to target house-made tinctures, syrups, tonics, and more. Thankfully, the MRA along with our partners, MRAPAC and TnHA, got wind of this and immediately got to work protecting your business. Through relationships with state legislators and the Governor’s Office, we were able to successfully reverse this decision by the TABC and protect this important aspect of your business and the Memphis hospitality culture. We will continue to follow up on this issue as it will be critical in the next legislative session that the statute is rewritten. This is just one example of how important it is that we stay ahead of issues legislatively that affect our livelihood and bottom lines. I would encourage all MRA members to join the MRAPAC. Since its inception in 2011, the MRAPAC has proved to be a compelling voice in our city and across our state. We can only continue along this successful path with the support of our members. CLICK HERE to join today! So, enjoy your summer and tell your bartenders to keep those creative juices flowing... because the MRA has your back. Slainte, Patrick

Spotlight on our Members

This month’s spotlighted members are The Boiling Point Seafood & Oyster

Bar and Joseph M. Banker, CPA.

The Boiling Point Seafood & Oyster Bar Southaven, MS Conveniently located just off I-55 and the Church Road exit, The Boiling Point Seafood and Oyster Bar has been a long-standing fixture in the Southaven, Mississippi community. In October of 2012, the restaurant changed ownership to natives Chris and Christina Wilhite. The restaurant was recently voted Desoto County’s “Best Catfish” and “Best Seafood” by the readers of the Desoto Times Tribune. This locally-owned, recently renovated,

But do not mistake this restaurant for its particular attention to seafood. The Boiling Point has recently changed all beef grill items to Certified Angus Beef, and they have the grill masters to prove worth in this area. If steak is what you desire, they have four different juicy offerings. Emphasis is placed on a fresh, quality, and local area product list that continues to grow. Catfish is supplied by Pride of the Pond in Tunica, MS; Smoked Country Pleasin’ sausage hails from nearby Florence, MS; rich and fluffy cakes are ordered from West Side BBQ in New Albany, MS; and during the season, live crawfish is trucked in directly from Eunice, LA twice a week. The Boiling Point Seafood and Oyster Bar is first and foremost a restaurant; however, they offer top local music entertainment throughout the week and have become one of the best places in the area for nightlife. In their first three months, the new owners carefully restructured and expanded the bar’s beer selections. The newly expanded full-service bar is one of the largest in Desoto County and now offers up 29 craft and domestic beers on tap and over 50 in bottle. This resulted in Desoto County residents voting the Boiling Point “Best Beer Selection” in the area. The new happy hour Mondays - Fridays from 4pm - 7pm also presents patrons with 1/2 price appetizers and budget-friendly drink specials. The Boiling Point also likes to educate the customer with routine wine, beer, and liquor dinner pairing events. Experts regularly attend these events to offer their skill, knowledge, and suggestions. The Boiling Point offers breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8am - 12pm, an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet Sunday - Friday from 11am - 2pm, and dinner service every day of the week.

Joseph M. Banker, CPA “Not your typical CPA” is a good title for this unique CPA firm located in Germantown, TN. Joe is a former Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey clown who opened his own CPA firm in 2001. He holds 30+ years

of accounting and consulting experience, and jokes about the fact that he can juggle balls and books! Entering the office, the first thing you notice is all the circus décor. Clients laugh about telling their friends that their CPA is a “Real Clown”! “Our clients are the real stars of this show. Getting to know and work with each unique individual on concerns and issues is an exciting challenge with the job. In Clown College, they train you to survey the audience and analyze the situation. Accounting is very similar! It is all a calculated move.” Everyone assumes the Accountant is analytical, did you ever realize that a Clown analyzes his surroundings? Joe brings a combination of over 30+ years Accounting and Tax knowledge and the creative mind of a clown!

The office is staffed with professionals that are committed to providing expert accounting opinions to the community including accounting topics such as federal estate tax changes, individual tax return tips, employee fraud protection and tax changes under the current federal administration. They work closely with the clients to grasp opportunities. Joe Banker, CPA provides a variety of tax services for several industries and entity types including- but not limited to- Individuals, Partnerships, S -Corporations, C – Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, Not-for-Profit Organizations, Trusts and Estates. Catering to both established and start-up organizations, they emphasize client business and performance goals while maintaining a primary focus on increased revenues and reduced costs. Being a member of the Memphis Restaurant Association since 2001, the Summer Social at the Redbirds game has been an exciting annual event for the whole office. Each year we try to be the first to order our tickets for the game in anticipation of “A Goodtime Had By All”, rain or shine!

MRA GIFT CERTIFICATES The MRA officially discontinued the Gift Certificate MRA gift certificate program in 2011. There are, however, still many gift certificates in circulation. MRA gift certificates are actually checks in various denominations. They can be deposited just like you would deposit any other check. Even though the program is officially gone, we would hope that our members would still honor MRA GC checks that are presented at restaurants. If there is some reason that you do not want to honor a MRA GC, please let the guest know that they can contact me (Kimberly Carlson, 901-488-4745), and I willreimburse them for the amount on the GC.
