Scouting the ‘Roos...

The Kangaroos come into Friday night’s match with an 0-0-1 record. UMKC hosted Wisconsin on Aug. 31, and the two teams played to a 1-1 draw. UMKC scored first on a Derek Schrick header 18 minutes into the match. The Badgers scored just before halftime, and there was no scoring for either side in the second half. The Kangaroos were picked to finish sixth in the 2013 WAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Junior forward Jordan Rideout, who scored seven goals to go along with two assists last season, was selected as the WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year for 2013. UMKC finished the 2012 season with a 7-10-2 record, and earned a second place finish in the Summit League after going 5-2 in conference play. The team returns nine starters and 15 letterwinners from last season.

Season Dedication...

The Memphis Tigers are dedicating the 2013 season to former Tiger David Medlock. Medlock was a defender for Memphis from 1998-2000, and played in 24 career games. Unofrtunately, Medlock passed away earlier this year after a battle with cancer. For the entire 2013 season, the Tigers will wear a patch with Medlock’s number “3” on their jerseys. Head coach Richie Grant and the entire Memphis men’s soccer program are honored to dedicate the 2013 season to David Medlock and the entire Medlock family.

A New Season...

With last friday’s 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton, the Tigers are 22-6-4 in season openers and have won six of their last nine games to start the season. Since Richie Grant’s first season in 1999, Memphis is 10-3-2 in opening games, and has outscored the opposition 36-19 in those 15 games.

Home Openers...

This Friday’s match against UMKC will be the 2013 home opener. In program history, Memphis holds a 22-6-3 record in home openers, and has outscored opponents 74-37 in those 31 games. In 12 years at Mike Rose, the Tigers are 6-42 in their home openers.

Junior defender Chandler Gagnon’s goal on Sunday was the seventh goal of his career. He has scored two goals in the team’s last four games, after scoring against UAB on Oct. 31, 2012.

It’s A Start...

Freshman Spencer Moeller started the first two games in the midfield, becoming the first of the 10 newcomers to earn a place in the starting XI. In addition, fellower newcomers Fakhry Khulfan, Jordan Klipsch, Kenneth Kauker, Raul Gonzalez, Hunter Danna also made appearances during the first weekend.

Strong at the Back...

Up until Sagi Lev-Ari scored in the 50th minute for Cal State Northridge on Sunday night, the Memphis defense and goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui held opponents scorless for 139:11 to start the season.

Tigers vs. Golden Eagles Sunday September 8, 2013 1:00 p.m. CT Memphis, Tenn. Mike Rose Soccer Complex

Mark Sherrod, Austin Stone and Shane Keely were each recognized on the Best XI Team for the event. Chandler Gagnon put Memphis ahead 1-0 with his first goal of the season in the 12th minute. The Tigers finished the game with 12 shots and four shots on goal. Cody Uzcategui made six saves in his second start in goal. After Gagnon’s goal, the Memphis defense kept the Matadors scoreless for the rest of the first half, despite facing seven shots and five shots on goal. Early in the second half, Gagnon was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. The junior defender had picked up his first yellow card earlier in the first half. Against only 10 men, Northridge was able to break through. Lev-Ari scored his first goal in the 50th minute to tie the game at one. The junior forward scored his second goal in the 57th minute to put the Matadors ahead by a goal. Memphis faced more trouble in the 64th minute after junior Fakhry Khulfan was sent off after receiving a red card. Lev-Ari scored his third goal of the match in the 72nd minute, and Northridge midfielder Yarzen Adulay capped off the Northridge scoring one minute later to give the Matadors a 4-1 advantage. Lev-Ari scored his first three goals of the 2013 season. He led the Matadors with 15 goals last season. Memphis next hosts the UMKC Kangaroos in the home opener on Friday night at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and admission is FREE for all fans.
